Chibi Lightning Figure Comes With Final Fantasy XIII Command Menu

By Spencer . September 3, 2012 . 1:49am

Square Enix is releasing a set of deluxe super deformed figures called Trading Arts Kai Mini in Japan. The Lightning figure is due for the end of December and it includes a bunch of accessories. You get Odin, four faces, and a replica of Final Fantasy XIII’s command menu. That’s kind of neat! The figure costs 2,100 yen ($27).

I can’t wait for the Aerith figure! Comes with Sephiroth’s sword and a dead face (x_x)…

    • Yes! A smiling chibi Sephiroth stabbing a smiling chibi Aerith!

      • OatMatadoQuatro

So beautiful. How about chibi Sephiroth stabbing the whole chibi town of chibi Nibelheim?

  • KotaroInugami

Super deformed is right. Those faces look kind of awkward… Lifeless… Or maybe nendoroids have just spoiled me. Either way, wouldn’t pay $27 for only one.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Hmm while the quality does look much weaker compared to Nendroid, the command menu does look attractive there lol.^_^

Now waiting for Final Fantasy 12 character with a RUN AWAY command lol.^_^

  • Oni123

Loved the Yuna Squall and Cloud figures ^^ Can’t wait for these

  • Eh…… The faces look pretty untidy, like the sculptor/painter forgot to Chibi-fy them (enough). I know this is part of Square’s personal product line and all, but the figures would have looked much better as Nendoroids.

    • Herok♞

but wouldn’t Nenodroids be alot more expensive?

      • Perhaps. But these figures don’t look that attractive or tidy anyway; sure, you pay less, but you’re also getting less. Personally, I’d rather pay more for a better-looking and -crafted product. Especially for a product category like figures where image and sculpting is everything.

Quite a shame with these figures, because I’d love to see Chibi Tsundere Lightning.

      •  Well, it says in the article that this figurine is supposed to cost 2,100 yen and normal nendoroid would, from my experience, cost about 2500-2700 yen, so the difference isn’t super big.

        • Herok♞

Really the only nendoroids I have seen cost alot more, which ones are that cheap when you say normal.

          • Hm. I reckon the price can slightly differ between each Nendoroid (maybe based on complexity or popularity/demand/fanbase), but are you sure what you saw wasn’t some discontinued Nendo being resold at a higher price?

          • Herok♞

Never mind, they were alot closer in yen then I thought with the ones I was thinking about being $50-55 dollars, going by direct conversions on the websites I guess it was just amazon marking them up alot which is why I thought they were more expensive.

  • Z3

Something about the face is turning me off

  • To be honest I find them quite creepy ~.~
I wish Square would just work with GSC and give us normal nendoroids.

    • I have no problems with Square trying to establish their own toylines, but their end results are… I’m not gonna mince words: Less than promising in comparison to other lines in the market. Their Play Arts Kai series has interesting figures (Adam Jensen, Solid Snake, etc.), but when observed closely, they just aren’t as tidy or detailed as, say, S.H.FiguArts or Figma. Not to mention that those don’t come with as much hands and accessory variety; I’m not sure about the articulation capabilities of PAK figures though.

In this case, I’d say the major problem with these Chibis is that the designers didn’t go all-out with the cartoonification, and the faces are stuck midway between the source pictures and Nendo-cuteness.

      •  Yeah, I agree, I kind of like their Play Arts, the bodies and details are decent, but I always find the faces to be kinda off too..especially with FFXIII series.
Figmas look way more ‘professional’ and ‘tidy’ as you said.

        • Yeah, Figmas are pretty smooth when it comes to faithfulness to the original proportions and silhouettes (sometimes barring some necessary gap in the joint areas). For S.H.FiguArts, it’s the opposite: I love the articulation possibilities they present, but the actual body proportions suffer a bit – especially with their Kamen Rider figures with small heads and rather long limbs. Ah well, can’t ask for everything.

  • Ahah, it’s really cute!

  • TheFoolArcana

That’s supposed to be Lightning? God help us all.

  • Internet is Crash

The Lightning chibi is out of proportion & creepy -___-

  • that face! *gasps*

  • Hoshi星

    Chibi? Those aren’t chibi!!

    >”super deformed figure” Oh I see. At least Square, go ask Good Smile to do nendoroids out of them.

  • Eh… no thanks, Light looks like a chibi dude with pink hair .__.

I’d take the chibi Tifa happily smiling with Red XIII, it doesn’t look that much creepy. That and Tidus with a Chocobo as well.

Wish we could see Squall, Yuna and Cloud chibis as well to judge if it’s looking nice enough to buy :3

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Tifa is cute I’ll take that one thank you! Lightning try to smile sometime geez opps I forgot shes cloud with pink hair that stole Squall’s gunblade

    • Nope, old Cloud had cheery moments:

And nope, Light’s gunblade model is diferent than Squall and it’s not the first gunblade user since Squall actually, Genesis copies had gunblades of diferent models as well.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

“Dood” Everyone gets happy on a chocobo “Duh”

        • Lies! I don’t see Tidus smiling!

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

That’s because Tidus is going to eat it, look at his face he looks hungry or pissed idk

          • If you played FFX you’d know why Tidus isn’t looking that chocobo with please and to be honest is undestandable, believe me ಠ_ಠ

            Eat it…. wait, that’s wasis!

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

I was joking geez -_- Dat minigame was a headache all for a Ultimate Weapon

          • I was joking as well? .__.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

That Tidus with the chocobo is probably a reference to the hardest minigame from FFX game required to get Tidus’ Ultimate Weapon. No wonder he looks so angry there.

Also, “Squall with a cactaur are out now.”
Square needs to release one about Squall seeing a wall.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Hah, that is a freakin adorable. Especially the little command menu.

  • Oh god, their faces.

  • too bad they look ugly

  • It burns…

  • Do these look… weird to anyone else…?

  • … the have ruined them why why i mean these chibi’s don’t look cute they look weird … my Lightning should look cuter the same goes for tifa and Tidus.

  • I never thought I’d see such ugly chibis. o.O

    •  they look like an american toyfacturer made them XD

      • Symbol de Au

How does an ugly chibi have anything to do with America?

      • Elemiel

They look more like they were made by one of those bootleg chinese companies.

        •  That’s a pretty ugly bootleg, but the box-art makes it look cute!  I wish Sqex had choosen to do these figurines in the Theatrhythm style; they would make cute chibis to display.  I suppose there wouldn’t be any option to change the faces with those, but then, that’s fewer pieces for me to lose, anyway.

          • Elemiel

Because the box is the actual box for the Good Smile Company Hatsune Miku nendoroid. I think the bootleggers just took the original out and put their nendoroid in it.

          •  Wow, that is super evil.

  • Eileen Sy

Phew, I thought I was the only one who thought these figures looked gross.

  • Zeromus321

What manufacturer made these….. Cause square might not wanna use them again…. Ever again….. These chibi’s scare me….

    • d19xx

Indeed. Reminds me of those Bratz dolls…

  • Neophoton

…These look horrendous. Going by other comments, I’m evidently not alone in this mindset, thankfully.

  • This is amazing, a Tifa item that I do not want any part of!  These figures look strange to me, I don’t like em.

  • Mazdian

Tis unfortunate that these aren’t too cute. Quality seems a bit low.

  • Hinataharem

I’m worried about what Horrendous Chibi Tidus is going to do with that Chocobo

  • Lazulis

So what 14 year old from DeviantArt did Square hire?

    • Historiata

    • DAAAMN!

    •  with the looks of them I might say even (s)he a 12 years old.

  • Niermyico

Oh the plus side, I think the hair looks nice. The face is what’s killing it.

  • Historiata

Must… resist… bashing the artist by comparing it to Ugly Saber…!

  • is that Tidus ?
