Report: Circle Of Mana Trademark Filed By Square Enix

By Spencer . September 7, 2012 . 5:12pm

som Whoa, the Mana series might be back in business. FF-Reunion reports Square Enix filed a trademark for Circle of Mana. We haven’t seen a new Mana game since Heroes of Mana, which was from Mother 3 developer Brownie Brown. It’s interesting to note that the trademark was filed with English text, perhaps a hint that this is being pegged for an overseas release.

Square Enix also registered "Ultima Box," Hitman protagonist’s name "Agent 47," and Wizardlings. Siliconera discovered the Wizardlings trademark earlier, which is from Square Enix USA.

probably an ios game, nothing to see here…

  • Hatkhora

I loved Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 on the SNES. Legend of Mana on the PSX was great too, but all of the games since then have been mediocre at best. As much as I’d like this game to be awesome, having high hopes for it does seem as though it would be foolish…

  • SirRichard

Circle of Mana, eh? It’s been a while since I played a Mana game, I wouldn’t mind seeing the series revived. They’ve generally been alright.

The others, though. Agent 47 probably relates to a Hitman social game or something, and I could see Ultima Box following suit, or just being an iOS/Android release. Not sure about Wizardlings, feels more like an XBLA/PSN release.

  • Michael Joseph

Its probably some stupid social game which would explain the word “circle” in the title.  *sigh*

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I foresee an cheep ios game coming. I miss the Mana

  • $36598391

It would be nice if Sword of Mana made it to the 3DS Eshop

  • LexKitteh

I would love to see another Mana game, but as others are saying, I’m worried its just another social/mobile game..

  • iOS game incoming.

Mana series to set the bar lower.

    More at 11.

  • Shane Guidaboni

I smell trouble. They haven’t done the Mana series justice in a LONG time.

  • Godmars

iOS ports of the original series?

    And me w/o a tablet :(

  • anarchy_panty

“Square-Enix is proud to announce our newest Facebook social event, ‘Circle of Mana!’ Invite your friends to your mana circle to increase your power!”

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

  • Keyanf

Should be noted Brownie Brown pretty much is the SD2/3 team (and possibly more in the series beyond that)

  • iOS, Android, GREE, mobage.
    Yep something on that level.
I love to be proved wrong though.

  • Chihiro

I totally grew up on Legend of Mana… I really wish the series could be given some justice :c

  • MrKappa

Legend of Mana was the last good Mana game made. Let’s hope they can get back in the swing of it… though I’m actually not expecting much.

  • Paradox me

I’m not about to get my hopes up without something concrete, but jumping to conclusions won’t do me any good either.

‘Circle’ could denote a mobile or browser game, but it could just as easily be a handheld title with a multiplayer component like Dragon Quest IX. Heck, it could even be entirely singleplayer, like ‘Heroes’.

Coming from a company whose given us gems like ‘Bravely Default: Flying Fairy’ and ‘358/2 Days’, names mean very little.

  • brian yep

Prolly gonna be a phone/browser/etc thing.

    • ThunderGod_Cid

Sadly, this is THE most like outcome….
      Goddammit #-_-

  • $30632660

I smell a game of the handheld variety.I suspect an IOS game, just because it’s Squarenix.

  • You guys say IOS game like its a bad thing. Give ’em a shot , they’re pretty damn good sometimes. Sure an IOS installment isn’t what we’ve been waiting for, but show some support so then maybe we can get a sequel on a different platform.

    •  I gave it a shot.

It turned out to be a Incompetent Obstinate Slacker.

      Yes I’m terrible with acronyms.

    • Anesia Hunter

We need more games for handlehelds like vita and 3ds.

    •  Most intelligent comment in this comment section.

I’d definitely take a new console/handheld Mana game over a iOS/Android game myself, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun with a game made specifically for the latter. There are some serious, interesting games on iOS/Android platforms. While I wouldn’t go as far to compare these to other handheld or console games (I think they all belong in a league of their own), I really agree that some of you should definitely give these gaming systems a chance.

    • Heath Bunch

But Secret of Mana ios is complete garbage….soo…yeah.

  • Joseph Santee

Oh my god… Guys, I just realized there’s a small chance it could be Seiken Densetsu 3.

I don’t care if it’s a iOS title. If my speculation turns out to be true, then…

I’m going to betray my Anti-apple bias. I will buy an Ipod Touch.

However, if it’s turns out to be a non-tablet/non-social game entry in the series, then I will explode with happiness.

    • WyattEpp

It would be cheaper to e-bay for the cartridge, buy a ROM dumper, patch the dumped ROM with the translation and play on your anything than to buy an iThing and any game for it.

  • Shouldn’t it be Square of Mana?

    • Morricane

And then we could make follow-ups called Triangle of Mana…and Cross of Mana…

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Don’t forget “Start of Mana and Select of Mana too.^_^

        • The Alphabeth of Mana spin-off series! The famous titles will be the “A of Mana”, “B of Mana”, “L of Mana”, “R of Mana”, “X of Mana” and “Y of Mana”. The not so famous, but the most popular with the minority of the fanbase (in terms of obscurity) will probably be “C of Mana” and “Z of Mana”.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

*sigh*……wait, let me guess: another iOS/browser/social game.

    • Learii

my guess is DS or 3DS but we have no idea for sure

      •  If so, Sweet but idk for now it seems like these things are usually iOS games :L

        • Learii

have any mana seies in iOS? because i see they in DS mostly

          • Merrick

Yes there is that Friends of Mana game for, I believe, GREE which had social elements in it.

          • Learii

i never heard of Friends of Mana before XD

  • epy

I want to be excited but like everyone is saying, probably some GREE/iOS/Android game. If we ever see a new Chrono game it would be probably be something along those lines.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Trademarks new games. ‘Fans’ auto asume IOS game or something of that type. *insert meme here* got to love it eh SE?

  • Carocaro4

I want to keep my hopes up for this. :)

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I can only said YES YES YES!!!^_^

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

I really REALLY want to be excited about this but all I can feel is dread.

And honestly that depresses me a little, because I would so love a new good mana game.

  • imaguni

Aww, the amount of pessimism in the comments isn’t really helping my cautious excitement. :/ Hopefully it’ll be something we can all be excited about!

  • Interesting news. I’ll keep my eyes on this.

  • i really hope this works out….i just hope its not gonna be on ios D:, i prefer it on handhelds..but i WANT it on consoles T_T

  • Anesia Hunter

The first mana game I ever played was Sword of Mana. Hopefully this isn’t just another iOS game, since I’m not liking the direction SE is going in.

  • HassanJamal

I hope its not a mana game like that horrid ps2 game. disappointing compared to the ps1’s legend of mana.

  • If some of the readers here have a low level of expectation of SE. If you’ve felt dissatisfaction with the XIII brand and the recent announcement of the iOS TWEWY port. Why would you hold any sort of optimism for any future titles?

If SE see potential in mobile gaming in Japan and beyond. Why wouldn’t they try to exploit the market? They run a business that looks to maximise profit and to increase/maintain market share.

The Square many of you fell in love with is gone, merged with Enix, and should be judged on the games they develop now and not on the past glory of titles they have acquired through the merger.

I look forward to hearing more info on the ‘Circle of Mana’.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

People hate everything that does not goes their ways no matter if what they want is not profitable to the company or not.

It seems gamer nowadays can not even think what is the main reason company come out with games.T_T

      • So true. Generally, why are gamers “threatened” by a game from a well-known franchise being made for the iOS?

Gaming on a mobile (phone) device will always play second fiddle to the main functionality and other apps, even though people text more than talk. There are dedicated gaming devices out there, for one reason or another, that aren’t being supported by the gaming community.

  • So, which IOS port is this going to be?

  • Heath Bunch

I guess all the ios defenders haven’t tried playing the Secret of Mana ios port….cause its awful.

    • Which doesn’t necessarily mean all iOS games are awful. SE has published some original iOS IPS which are definitely worth every RPG fan’s attention.

      • Heath Bunch

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me several more times this gen, shame on me. Not falling for more Squenix shenanigans.

  • CirnoLakes

I’ll take it! For XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, and PC via Steam, please!

  • Happy Gamer

seiken densetsu 3 (secret of mana 2) HD remix.

  • Not holding my breath for anything exciting because of what they did to the Mana series after Legend of Mana. DoM, HoM and CoM were…yikes.

    • Yuuki

COM was one of the better in the last years.

  • Göran Isacson

I was super stoked about  this and then I come here and see all these people reminding me that it might just be some kind of social game for the iOS. Like, I know you people are just being honest and probably have my best interests at heart, but the pain man. The pain is still there.

THAT BEING SAID, I will hold a little hope that this is gonna be some fun little mana-romp for the 3DS or something. What can I say, hope springs eternal.
