Why Does Raiden Turn Into Black Raiden In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance?

By Kris . September 10, 2012 . 11:50am

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has a “White Raiden” and a “Black Raiden”. Hideo Kojima tweeted a couple of images of Black Raiden from the game’s Tokyo Game Show demo this morning:

So, what’s the difference between the two? You begin the game as White Raiden. However, according to Konami’s Metal Gear brand manager, Kevin Vlaming, after Raiden takes a severe beating at the hands of a character named Samuel Rodriguez, he is rebuilt to be stronger.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released on February 19th, 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Once you go black you don’t go back… In other news, Raiden looks cooler in black. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a White suited Ninja since the movie, “Enter the Ninja”.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Seriously, does the name “Storm Shadow” mean nothing to you?

    • Kaihedgie

Uhh….hello? Joe Musashi and his father Jiro, anyone?

  • Tales_of_Master

Sooooo, White Raiden is the Raiden from MGS4, and the Black Raiden is the one rebuilt for MGS Rising. Did I get it right ?

  • MrRobbyM

Needs more neon blue or green. But I really do prefer the black. It suits him.

    Raiden TRANS-AM or BURST MODE….

  • This proves that Raiden just cannot be killed

  • OatMatadoQuatro

White Raiden the one from MGS4. He is playable in the start of Rising but he is defeated by a group of terrorists that leave him near dead. While being healed, Raiden is given the new black cyborg armor that is a lot more powerful than the old one.

  • KingGunblader

Am I the only one who was strongly reminded of Samus when I saw these pics?

  • dahuuuundge

So Raiden’s body is basically entirely made with replaceable prosthetic like Ghost in the Shell now?

    • D-Rev

I believe so, since apparently he was first put into the cyborg body after his head (without the lower jaw) and spinal cord was removed from his body.

  • SirRichard

I’m liking the black Raiden more, I must say. From the article header, I thought they were going to include some moral choice system or something.

    • OatMatadoQuatro

I thought there will be a moral system. It could result in different endings

      • The Tagline is “Make it Right”, I don’t think a morality system would really fit.

Loving the huge doses of Metal Gear I’ve been given recently :)

Thanks KP and P studio :)

  • Nicolas Vasquez

well this is giving me more zero from megaman vibes than before, we just need a evil(cyberelf)snake now.

  • This is interesting news. I’m very excited for the release of Rising next February (followed closely by the release of Crysis 3… hehehe). I’m also loving all the Metal Gear love going around right now. So much new info about the series (the series that sold me on games being wonderful storytelling tools), I truly feel like my head could end up exploding with all this news.

  • Gentlemen we can rebuild him, we have the technology, we have the capability to make the worlds first bionic man, better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

    • Dianatos

…but we don’t want to spend a lot of money.

      • OatMatadoQuatro

That’s exactly why he has to go around killing cyborgs and stealing their bodies

    • OatMatadoQuatro

      “Make it right”

    • You beat me to it.

  • z_merquise

Raiden: He was dead . . . but he got better!

  • Kaihedgie

    Dat visor

  • Nitraion

Wow brother Mk2 already? awesome o-o
give me Vibe when ironman changes his source energy from circle to pentagon one….

  • MrKappa

Can’t wait for this. This will be action game of the year for sure.

  • Nice. The visor helps.

  • WEL

the original MGS4 design was so cool and creepy but this new one looks kind of cheesy, it even has abs now, the only thing missing are the bat-nipples. And that
Samuel Rodriguez cyborg looks even more lame, he looks just like that guys from Bleach called Shunsui while wearing a VR Trooper armor.  =/

KojiPro puts so much care when designing their characters but these Platinum guys….

    • Kaihedgie

The original Metal Gear had Sean Connery as Big Boss, MG2 had Gray Fox looking like a fox. MGS had a BDSM guy with a gas mask, MGS2 had the Fatman, an overweight, armored skater drinking whiskey, MGS3 had an old man who literally sat around all day waiting for someone to shoot and even at one point dying on the spot for waiting too long without eating or drinking and MGS4 had the female successors of FOXHOUND

I don’t quite think yer in a position to complain about something like this; a data-streaming, face-guarding visor that manages to complete the ninja in Raiden

    • Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Raiden’s character design already like that before the shift to Platinum?

  • A: Because it’s badass and we can’t say no.

  • ZBaksh386

it looks cool but i liked the old one better.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

The unmasked Raiden wearing an eyepatch looks a bit creepy. He looks like a film’s  protagonist who had scissors in his fingers. Can’t remember the movie’s name

  • Bentan

black raiden has spikier and more fabulous hair

  • Why is raiden white at all. he is Liberian last i checked those are black folk.
