Report: Next Ys Will Be A New Story

Dengeki PlayStation has an interview with Trails in the Sky developer Nihon Falcom and snippets were shared online.

We’ve seen screenshots of Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees shared in magazines and online, but, as the interviewee says, players may completely change their impressions when they see the game running on actual Vita hardware. This time for the Ys series they wanted to remake a title from the past using new technology. They’re going to focus on a new story for the next Ys title.

Falcom is also developing a new entry in the Trails in the Sky series. There aren’t any details other than when we see it we’ll understand how the series is evolving. What I’m most curious about is Falcom is working on a completely new game, which they hope they can announce soon. While Falcom is synonymous with The Legend of Heroes and Ys, they released quirky games like Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure too.

  • Raiyu

What ever happened to that new Vita IP they were talking about last year?

    • PoweredByHentai

I think I know what you’re talking about. Lemme look it up.

    • xavier axol

?…. can you tell me more about it?, like when it was announced or the name of the title.

  • MrTyrant

This IS what I WAS asking for. New games, cool titles in the Vita to keep it alive. If Falcom is the one who will give us completly new games then this handheld is a “must buy”

  • Learii

i start to love vita and their new games

  • Farid Belkacemi

“Falcom is also developing a new entry in the Trails in the Sky series.”

They need to take a break, and wait for us ! Seeing all these Japanese TiTS make me sad… Or Happy ? :D Damn you Falcom !

  • I seriously need to play the other Ys games. I refuse to play games out of order… :/ Though Origins can be skipped since I don’t like PC gaming.

    • Raiyu

Well when you’re playing them in order you’re still technically playing them out of order so…

      • Oh yah? How is the chronology of this game?

        • Raiyu

Origins -> Ys I  -> Ys II -> Foilage Ocean in Celceta (IV) -> Oath in Felghana (III) -> Ys V -> Ys Ark of Napishtim (VI) -> Ys Seven

          • So 3 and 4 are out of order. And this is 4 right? I know us I and II are on PSP as is Seven. This is on vita and I can pray for a localization leaving what 3 and 5? What are those released on?

Edit: Forgot 6 but isn’t it on PSP too?
Edit2: 3 is apparently on PSP too. So that leaves 5 only and that has never seen a US release.

          • Raiyu

Yes Foilage Ocean in Celceta is 4.

Every game is on PSP/Vita except Origin and 5 but 6 isn’t on PSN.

          • Mantiskilla

Best way to play any of the Ys games except Ys I&2 is on PC. Better sprites, animations, and in HD. Ys Seven on PC is well flat out beautiful compared to the PSP version and with VI it doesn’t run into slowdown issues like the PS2 and PSP versions

    • Origins on pc with a joystick is soooo great. It’s a amazing game.

      • Morricane

Yeah no idea what the difference should be in playing on the PC with a gamepad vs. playing on a console with a gamepad…is this some kind of ideological thing?_?

        • Maybe he likes to play in his sofa. ^_^

  • HarryHodd

    Weren’t they making a game for PS3?

  • NeoAthanasius

If you play it with a gamepad there is no difference in the way it feels from a console. It is soooo good!

  • epy

That’s very exciting. wonder where Adol will take us next. I was kinda hoping they would remake Ys V next as I’ve only played the PS2 version (which wasn’t very good) but I know that will show up eventually.

  • Wagnaria

Falcom, for future Ys games please never-ever thought of making a new Ys protagonist other than Adol/Don’t even think about replacing him with a new generation silent protagonist.
We all know that it’s not [that] Ys anymore without Adol, we love him.

Oh, Ys Origins you say? that was an exception. (=u=)

  • Vadim Merzhey

I don’t get it. Why are they’re rewrighting the story each time they remake Ys 4? Did they hate the SNES original or something?

    • Silver Citizen

Seeing as Falcom never actually developed Ys IV before, they’re making it the way they want it now.

    • Yep, as Silver Citizen said, this is technically the first time Falcom’s ever released *any* version of Ys IV. In the 16-bit era, they outsourced the game both to Tonkinhouse (for the Super Famicom version) and to Hudson (for the PC-Engine version), and while they did provide plot details and music and such, both companies went in very different directions with the materials they received. At first, Falcom seemed to put most of their effort into promoting Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys on PC-Engine, as it was the more technically sound and (IMHO) fun of the two versions — but it also took some serious liberties with their story. Tonkinhouse’s SFC effort was less polished and (again IMHO) less fun, but stuck closer to Falcom’s original vision and fit better with series canon, so until now, it’s been regarded as the “official” Ys IV.

Then many years later, Taito decided to try their hand at remaking Ys IV for the PS2 under the name “Ys IV: Mask of the Sun -a new theory-“, and further altered the story and gameplay, creating a third Ys IV that was yet again a completely different game (albeit *more* similar to Mask of the Sun than to Dawn of Ys).

Now, finally, Falcom has seen fit to release their own take on Ys IV… and I guess in keeping with Ys IV tradition, it’s yet another completely new retelling of the story.

For Ys fans, this is a very exciting prospect, as it means this long-standing gap in first-party Ys storytelling is about to be filled.

  • We need Trails in the Sky series on Steam. Come on XSEED!

    • xavier axol

yeah! and we need the sequel on the psn and steam.

    • JazzyMan123

Wait until the big script is done.

  • “This time for the Ys series they wanted to remake a title from the past using new technology. They’re going to focus on a new story for the next Ys title.”

What it actually says on that link: “(As for) the next title in the Ys series, there’s the feeling that we want to remake older titles using today’s technology, but we’re also looking at doing new stories”.

So, nothing is certain, but it’s probably going to end up being a new story for the next game anyway.
