You Can Transfer Virtual Console And WiiWare Games To Your Wii U

By Spencer . September 13, 2012 . 12:12am

wiiwareThe Wii U, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained, is backwards compatible with Wii software. You can pop in Wii discs and play Skyward Sword.

What about your digital purchases? Iwata says WiiWare and Virtual Console games can be transferred over to your new system.

    I’m assuming through SD cards?

I can’t be that simple because they have to make some kind of validation that your Wii U now owns the title instead of your Wii. Wish there was a little more detail on that. I mostly want to know if it’s possible right from release or at a later date like the 3DS.

Indeed details are scarce, but if Iwata says they really learned from past mistakes, I wouldn’t put it past them to make it more streamlined and available sooner than with the 3DS.

They will probably just use Club Nintendo.

It will probably be like the 3DS, ie. you’ll need to have both the Wii and Wii U running and connected to the internet.

Well I’d sure hope so, not having it would be a major drawback.

Gosh, it’s going to be nice to have just about everything my Wii did(aside from playing games like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Tales of Symphonia, Super Mario Sunshine, and other great Gamecube games I love to play), without having to rely on outdated RCA component plugs.

This is a nice feature there.^_^ Especially for gamer who skip Wii library there but about the digital purchase transfer there, it is scary there that we don’t have any concrete news on how we are going to transfer the game there.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

But it also means hackers will take full advantage of this also. Because if you may already know modded wii owners could dawnload WiiWare and Virtual Console Games online. Think Nintendo already token countermeasures for this? hmmm I hope so

    • daizyujin

Well it depends if the channel transfer moves the Homebrew Channel over or not.  Heehee.  (Note I am kidding, I know they are not that stupid.)

Could it work? or should they be only for Club Nintendo users? it would be great if you could install the tickets, but is there a way to do it without installing the games and filling up the wii memory?

  • ddh819

Does this include VC titles that you bought but were later pulled from the store?

  • neo_firenze

Any word on backwards compatibility with Gamecube discs?  Would be really cool if the WiiU carries on the Wii’s ability to play those.

Months ago, the answer was no.  I don’t know if it changed since then, but probably not.  They have suggested that you will be able to get Gamecube games on the Virtual Console though.
