On Making One Piece: Pirate Warriors’ Adventure Part

By Spencer . September 24, 2012 . 2:38pm

One Piece: Pirate Warriors splinters from the traditional Dynasty Warriors formula with an adventure part. These sections have Luffy grab and swing from objects using his Gum Gum arms.

"One of the reasons we made the action part, which is different from the typical Dynasty Warriors style flow, is because [Pirate Warriors] is the first One Piece game that follows the manga and anime storylines. There are different kinds of scenes from the series we wanted to recreate with Luffy," producer Hisashi Koinuma from Tecmo Koei said to Siliconera.

"Making the adventure part was difficult since we wanted to do more than use Luffy’s stretching ability. We wanted to use Luffy’s ability to grow as well during the adventure part. Reproducing these so they feel like the anime was challenging."

Koinuma said while he likes Luffy, Tony Tony Chopper is his favorite character. "Luffy seems like the strongest character, but during development Robin was the strongest at the time. After we released the game in the Japan, fans said Franky was the strongest. During development, what we’re most focused on is recreate the same scenes and actions from the manga and anime. After we do that, then we balance the characters," Koinuma added.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors comes out tomorrow as a digital PlayStation 3 release via PlayStation Network.

The game has already released in Europe, last week on the 21st.

Nice write up for their rational behind the game, hope its executed greatly.

Price? Also, is Tokyo Jungle really only 15$? I need to get that one :-D

    • Yup, just $15 for Tokyo Jungle with a nice 20% discount for Plus subscribers. I think the plans for the coming weekend have been set :)

Heh, yeah I’m not surprised that balancing all these characters wasn’t the first thing on their minds. Dynasty and Ken’s Rage are all a bit more… “samey” in their powersets (swords and medieval weapons and fisticuffs respectively), whereas One Piece has all kinds of crazy stuff going on and balancing all that across all the characters can’t be easy. And above all- the Warriors scene is about plowing through hundreds of enemies, not pitch-perfect balance.

Personally, I wanna see what they make of Brook. What with his quick moves, maybe a bit of Zhou Tai?

I’m playing this and i can’t wait for the sequel with Sky Island(I really want to kick Enel’s ass :P) and maybe Thriller Bark? Also the anime/manga will be far head so more stuff probably can added. So excited! :D

    Can’t wait!!!!!!!

The adventure portion is wonderful. Didn’t care for Another Log though. I guess I can’t complain about having character arenas, but I’d just like having something a bit more interesting similar to the what-if scenarios for Hokuto Musou.

  • Gildohma

TOMORROW!!! I don’t want to wake up until the PSN updates!!

I completed the Main Log on Sunday and now I’m slowly working on Another Log; the Main Log is more fun because there’s more to do (as the platforming parts are unaccessible in Another Log) but I really want a sequel which explores more of the series with more characters and introduces more platforming as playing the same stages does get dull even for me, who likes repitition but there are so few stages in Another Log that it just…gets boring.

Online play is fun…until your partner goes and defeats the boss with one hit before you get there. That’s happened to me TWICE and that was rather annoying. Also, I found people playing as Whitebeard scared the sh*t out of me because he’s so big!! HE LITERALLY RAN BEHIND ME AND I COULDN’T SEE WHERE I WAS!!

WHY AM I SO BROOOKE?!  lol i want this game so bad alongside Borderlands 2.  :(  Job hunting it is.

  • “Luffy seems like the strongest character, but during development Robin

fans said Franky was the strongest”

for her Ability ..Robin is sure deserves the strongest, making unlimited parts of her body on unlimited places …
even Oda-sensei the creator of ONE PIECE said that he wants her ability so he can Draw 20 pages at the same time (releasing Chapter 20x as fast).

  • ViewtifulBo

Luffy’s the strongest! He’s going to be king of the pirates!!!!! I love all of the strawhats though :3

  • i cant find the game on PSN D:<
    someone help D:

  • Himei

Can’t wait.  Will be downloading it to support it but will also be buying the European version when it comes out so I can own it physically.

  • isfuturebright

I’m not a fan of one piece but I’d like to try this one :)

  • TheGameTagerZ

    Its still not out =/

  • Solomon_Kano

I really can’t wait to play this. I don’t have $50 right now, but when I do, I’ll be all over this. I missed all of the previous One Piece games that came west, so it feels like I’ve been waiting a good 6 years for this one.

  • LegendaryLos

I’m loving this game so far, but after I beat the first mission it started to freeze whenever I’d start another one. May try re-downloading.

  • TheGameTagerZ

This game is so repetitive man.

The cutscenes ALMOST make it worth it but man the puzzles are so annoying (not hard, annoying)
