Final Fantasy XIV May Let You Ride Red XIII In The Future (And Other Info)

By Ishaan . September 27, 2012 . 11:40am

Square Enix have put up a full 1.5 hour recording of the most recent Letter From the Producer Live Q&A with the developers of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which is scheduled to reboot the game in the near future. You can watch the entire Q&A session below or read a transcript of it here.

Here are a few of the interesting questions that were asked and answered:

Q: So are we going to get a benchmark sometime soon?

A: We’ll have two benchmarks. The first will be available before the Beta test starts so that players can see if their PC specs meet the requirements for FFXIV:ARR. The second one will be released just before the game launches and will be bundled with character creation software.

In other words, you’ll be able to make characters to use in FFXIV:ARR before launch. If you’re wondering what character creation will be like and are thinking about what kind of character you want to make, you can check this out.

Unfortunately we can’t show the character creation system today, but there will be a tremendous amount of freedom for players to create original characters.

Q: You also mentioned that elements from the FF series would be introduced into the game; like the Crystal Tower, Magitek Armor, and the Gold Saucer. What other things are you thinking would be fun to add?

A: Well, we’ve been considering quite a lot of things, but it really comes down to timing. The team’s schedule is really quite full at this point. At one stage we were talking about being able to ride Red XIII, or even Red XIV, from FFVII even came up.

I’m a huge FF fan, so just like you, I’m dreaming of different things that I would like to put into the game as well.

Q: Are there any plans to increase the level cap? If so, when?

A: At the launch of A Realm Reborn, the level cap will still be 50. We’re already planning to implement a lot of content specifically for level 50. If we decide to increase the level cap at the time of launch, we’re going to have to implement additional content before we’re able to launch ARR.

The current plan is to increase the level cap with the next major update after launch. We will also be updating the content to reflect the increase in level cap. So the level cap increase will happen. It just won’t be happening at the launch.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to give you a time frame on when it will occur. Please note that the battle system is completely different in ARR, so even if your character is already at level 50, there’s a lot to re-learn.

No, bad Yoshida! We should be trying to move on from Final Fantasy VII, not bring any of it into an HD game. Go sit in the corner and think about what you said.

    • Godmars

Thing is they’ve been saying such for a while now.

The exact fact and bone of contention with them is that they’ve been saying much and delivering on hardly anything.

Move on? I’d rather move back to Final Fantasy VI.

Or rather, Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, and IX. I think that we should move on more from the Final Fantasy VII formula when making new games. But throwbacks to old games has always been a favourite of mine. My favourite Final Fantasy games from the PlayStation are IX and Tactics. And they have a blatantly old school feel.

Also, when I bought Final Fantasy XI Online, I was expecting something more like Final Fantasy IX Online. It was a good game with perhaps the best lore I’ve ever seen in an MMORPG ever. But it was still a little bit of a culture shock and I had wished it had felt even more like a Final Fantasy than it did. Like more Final Fantasy IX flavor.

Can’t say I’m against them throwing in more Final Fantasy throwbacks into this game. The mere idea excites me, to say the least. Every time they announce more classic Final Fantasy throwbacks into the game, the more fond of it I become. MMORPGs need more classic Final Fantasy elements, not less.

Not that I want to ride Red XIII. But I sure as heck think that things like bringing back theme parks like the Gold Saucer is a good idea. Heck, if I were them, I’d add really good swimming mechanics, the ability to battle and battle well underwater, and Blitzball. I’d also add a really nice and dynamic chocobo racing events, both unique tracks with no monsters that need to be teleported to so to speak, and making use of already existing land if and wherever possible.

Heck, the more content an MMORPG can have, the better.

Riding Red XIII would be cool but its sort of sad from a character perspective. The wise and proud warrior from FFVII was reduced to Cait Sith’s ride in Advent Children with only one line and then to a mere cameo with no lines in Dirge of Cerberus. He would just become a glorified pet at this rate.

But what an awesome and soothing voice in that one line.

  • Barrylocke89

I don’t mind FF14 having elements of various final fantasy games, but it seems really weird having intelligent Red XIII used as a possible beast of burden.

    • amagidyne

       Maybe he’s into that.

  • SpecDotSign

Just give me Cloud’s Buster Sword as a rare weapon with a 70% crit ratio and I’ll subscribe. Day. One.

  • Crevox

The Red XIII thing was more of a joke.

  • amagidyne

That would just be silly, let me ride [INSERT PUNCHLINE HERE] instead.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I hate to admit it but the game looks awesome.

  • Kevin Lor

They should make a Dissidia MMORPG and you get to relive the story of all the FF characters. MADE FOR FANS ONLY! harhar

  • CirnoLakes

Shut up and take my GHz!

I feel like logging into Final Fantasy XIV right now just out of excitement.

  • Settsuo

No Red XIII, give me Judge Magister Armor with a grand companies design.
