I don’t know why a PS3 exclusive would have a mandatory install. I thought developers usually did that so the games would load as fast as their 360 counterparts.

Of course not. If it improves loading times, it’s a useful feature to have in general. Being exclusive to a console is irrelevant here.

I’m pretty sure everyone would like a longer lasting Laser to read disc for their consoles.

That size is pretty much normal on almost any PS3 game… I was expecting like 8GB or something

I don’t know, if toki towa actually used 3D character model rather than HD sprites then I understand if the install is beyond 4gb but really even 4gb is too much for something like this. Imo anyway.

well, if the 2D sprites are high enough resolution then this actually makes a lot of sense. Some Gust and Compile Heart games use fairly high resolution images, and both and PS2 and PS3, those games can be a little slow to load those images because their sheer size. I’ve actually had problems with games freezing because they were struggling to load those images fast enough.

Considering that Toki Towa is pretty much entirely comprised of such images, chaining detailed sprites together for animations of multiple characters onscreen, especially for battles, this approach would reduce the load on the system’s disc drive, since having to search for those images constantly would be an ordeal. By comparison, with 3D models, usually only a polygon frame and the applied texture needs to be loaded for each character and object, and once loaded, they simply move according to various algorithms. In that sense, once 2D passes a certain level of detail, 3D actually starts to become easier to manage as far as actually loading game resources.

Does this have anything to do with the mandatory install? I actually have no idea, but I feel like this is as good a guess as any.

Gust and Compile Heart use high res 2d? lol… All of their games/res caps at 720P… The only dev that actually use high-res 2D (for the console standards) are VanillaWare. Disgaea 4 is also pretty close with high-res sprites.

They should have it install until the this game gets an English release, amirite? That would be like an eternity.
I wonder if this or Xillia will come out first. Let the race begin!

    18GB for my GT5, 4500MB it’s nothing ;)

having PSplus is making having HDD space a hard task.

  • https://twitter.com/RaiohV Raioh

4.5GB for one wedding scene? That must be one hell of a cutscene.

  • personablaze

Save space on my PS3? sure

Save money in my wallet? Nope

  • Learii

    4,5000 MB that like 4.5GB?

    • Robert Hendrie

      4.395GB, 1GB = 1,024MB

  • ZEROthefirst

That’s much better than the almost 12 GBs that Gran Turismo 5 is pretty much taking now.

  • Hatsuaki

Alright, I’ll save some space :(

My PS3 only has 30 GB free atm, sadly.

  • Peace Legacy

Funny how I thought basing on the article’s name, this was going to be about how a specialize custom firmware/device will allow you to never have to worry about your HDD space on your PS3 again
The actual article is the opposite of that :(

  • Nemesis_Dawn

The headline made it seem like this was going to be some sort of ridiculous GT5-size install. This is nothing.

How much GB do you have to save for GT5 then?

      • Nemesis_Dawn

I’m not into racing games, but before it was supposed to come out, I remember reading that it was a 10G install. I had also heard that Rage was a 9G install.

  • Chow

I JUST cleared enough space for Star Hawk single-player campaign that I got free from the North American PS+!!

Whoa, it landed back on its feet.
