Re:Chain Of Memories Style Remake Was Considered For Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

By Spencer . October 3, 2012 . 1:36am

kh3582Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix has two games Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is covered, but only in theater mode.

More snippets from a Famitsu interview with Tetsuya Nomura leaked online and he said a full remake like Re: Chain of Memories was considered for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. However, it was too late to begin work on a new title so 358/2 Days was presented as Theater mode.

Nomura acknowledged the Kingdom Hearts series was split onto different hardware and realizes that players may have not kept up with the story. He believes the best way to address this is to start from the beginning with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix. Nomura says he thinks fans of the series will make new discoveries too when they play the games in chronological order.

I personally didn’t like KH 358/2 days much at all. It felt slow and sluggish, however to its credit I loved playing as the Organization 13 members in the co-op mode. If they would have remade it with a battle system like KH BBS or DDD I would be all over it.

But I’m glad they at least put it in as a movie because, I honestly don’t remember much at all about the story in days.

  • Xapth

A lot of people I know didn’t seem to like 358/2 Days very much, but I freaking loved it!

Maybe I have a bias because Roxas is my favorite character but…

It’s honestly one of my favorite DS games out there. Not to mention MULTIPLAYER, in a Kingdom Hearts game! Birth by Sleep pulled off multiplayer perfectly though.

I would have really loved to have seen an HD 358/2 Days remake though.
As great as it was, it could have benefited greatly from one.

  • Total_Overdose

I loved playing as the different organization members in 358/2 Days, but the mission based gameplay got old…fast.

Although I would have liked a remake for completionist sake, I think that this is the better route.

  • Rogerrmark

I liked Days a lot, don’t really have problems with games based on missions/grind,since I love Monster Hunter and similars, and controlling the Organization was great.

It would be nice if they made a Remake, since DS had controls/multiplayer/internet issues, and multiplayer through PSN would be fantastic…not happening so soon, though.

    • Rogerrmark

Maybe mission/grind is not the point of KH,so some people found the game kinda indigest.I thought it was a nice surprise, overall.

It would be cool if there were equipments that appeared on the characters, after all the grind(excluding weapons),but, again, not the point of KH at all.

      • Draparde

I loved the mission aspect of BBS and Days, So your not alone, (it may have also been because i have 2 friends that also did them with me)
i honestly wish they’d put some sort of multiplayer like this in all the KH games in some fashion.

it doesn’t take away from the actual game, and adds longevity to those who do them~

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Wrong answer. Fans have been waiting for a comprehensive collection of all the games, that it should be done right. In my opinion, they should have taken the time to rework 358/2 Days to makes sure they covered all the bases.

Also, this still isn’t in true chronological order since BbS isn’t the first one there. They’re just doing it by release order…

    • Herok♞

       No this isn’t release order because that went KH1, KH:CoM, KH2, KH358/2, KH:ReCoM, KH:BBS, KH:Recoded, and KH:DDD.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

        Correction: it’s KH1 (PS2), KH:CoM (GBA), KH2 (PS2), KH: ReCoM (PS2 remake), KH:Coded (mobile title), KH: 358/2 (DS), KH:BbS (PSP), KH: ReCoded (DS remake) and KH:DDD (3DS).

    • Don’t speak for all the fans as for myself Im satisfied with this idea to make compilations.
Do you actually expect all SEVEN games released at once? Redone in HD and all? With redone gameplay fit to the console? You’re crazy bro, that would take ages to be released. Also, Days is getting more than just the Theather cutscenes from the game, they are making cutscenes from important parts of the game, kinda like watching a movie and for me that’s actually nice.

KH I’s sequel is CoM and the secret ending leads to Days, it’s obvious to believe the second HD game will contain KH II of which sequel (kinda) is Re:CoM and the secret ending leads to BbS so those three will be included.
KH II also have more ties with BBS than KH I with Xemnas visiting the Chamber of Slumber, Aqua’s armor, his memories of his past self Terra and the mysterious talk Xigbar had with Zexion. Oh and the fight with Terra’s Armor.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Don’t get me wrong. I want compilations too, but if you’re making one, do it right. KH3 won’t be until next gen, let’s not kid ourselves. We’ve waited a long time for an actual sequel, so make the 2 compilations (we all know there will be a second one coming) count for something.
KH:BbS, KH:ReCoded, and KH:DDD are all fairly recent with modern gameplay elements, so the only thing they need to do there is retexturing/hi-resing the character models and backgrounds (music and dialogue is optional). The real work is updating KH1, KH:ReCoM, KH2, and KH 358/2 since they have older gameplay elements and visuals.
You’re saying they can’t make new improvements in 2-3 years for all 4 games by the time KH3 is closer to release? Remember, they still have FFVsXIII to finish before the full and true KH team moves onto KH3, and we don’t know how much longer they will need to release that…

I will agree that certain games have more in ties with some than others. So what games they pair up with in the compilations will make for some slight distortion.

        • Sebastian Lothian

I’m fine with their current plan. What you’re asking for isn’t a simple task, and it’s time and effort that could be put into developing Kingdom Hearts 3.

    •  Chronological order isn’t always a good thing with prequels.

Imagine if they showed us episodes 1-3 of Star Wars first! It would ruin the major impact of episodes 4-6 for people unfamiliar with the series. There are a few events in Birth by Sleep that shouldn’t be shown to unfamiliar fans till well after Kingdom Hearts II.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

For the most part, I agree with your statement on KH:BbS; some things would confuse the f*** out of people if it was put first. I’m just calling him out for saying “chronological”, when it clearly isn’t.

Also what are you talking about? There’s no episodes 1-3 for Star Wars.
I try really hard to forget thoses movies ever existed, but to no avail…

        • Herok♞

Come on the prequel triology had the best and worst movie in the series so there is no need to forget about it, (ok maybe episode 2 but it wasn’t that bad.)

    • DCBlackbird

But 2 came out before 358…… Guess if they did include 2 no one would buy 2.5

  • Herok♞

It was a fun game at the time but I don’t mind not seeing 358/2, because it did drag on at bits and the mutiplayer might not have worked split screen, so I can live with it.

  • Balmung

Maybe they’ll remake it for the KH2 HD Remix

    • It’s more likely that we see Birth By Sleep and maybe even DDD in there (as theater mode too).

      • Balmung

I would love to see Birth By Sleep on PS3, I loved that game on psp =D and I really do hope that we see DDD in some form on PS3 because there’s no way I’m buying a 3DS for it…

    • Sebastian Lothian

Yeah, I think it might consist of KH2 and Birth by Sleep as the games, and have Re:Coded and DDD in theater mode.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

    I wonder if this means there’s a chance we’ll see 3D in 2.5

  • Lunir Malheur

I still don’t know why this is only for Playstation 3, Nomura itself said “KH is on more plataforms, that’s why we are doing this”… So, it would be obvious to see this on a Nintendo plataform… It sucks, I want it on the Wii U, I can’t afford a PS3…

    • Anime10121

Not to sound mean or anything, but how is that remotely possible when the PS3 is cheaper than the WiiU?  If you work, buy both, that’s what I’m doing (already have a PS3, and will buy a Wii U as soon as Platinum’s first game for it hits).

      • Lunir Malheur

Because I have all Nintendo plataforms so it’s kinda obvious that I’m going to continue that way because of the exclusives, I’m not going to buy a PS3 just for this ._. and I meant that I can’t afford two consoles at the same time… don’t have the time or the money to buy games for both.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

Well, then I guess you won’t get to continue with the series, except for whatever future 3DS entries they may make in the future. It’s one of the pitfalls of choosing to stay loyal to a hardware brand. I had a PS1 and a PS2, but I bought a 360 the beginning of this gen when it looked like more games I would have liked would have been on that. When more of them started coming out for PS3, I got one of those. Now, with the exception of Bayonetta 2, I don’t have any games coming out that I will miss out on. You should look into moving beyond brand loyalty.

    • They might still port it to the Wii U, you realize– hard to give concrete promises for a console that isn’t even out yet.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

You are aware you can buy a PS3 for less than a Wii U will cost you, right?

    • Kefkiroth

To make it for the Wii U means higher production values, and this is just an HD remake, not a whole new game.
Besides, the series started on PS2, so naturally the HD remake would be on PS3.

      • By that logic Final Fantasy and Metal Gear should be Wii U games too. There really isn’t any reason for this to not go on N’s console.

        • Kefkiroth

Well Final Fantasy migrated to Playstation due to the space concerns on the N64 cartridges… And IIRC MGS was supposed to be “MG3” on 3DO until they moved to Playstation because the 3DO was dying.

“There really isn’t any reason for this to not go on N’s console.”
But didn’t you just use the logic that FF and MG started on Nintendo consoles? KH did start on PS2 despite some Nintendo handheld entries. There isn’t anything like space concerns on the PS3, so I don’t see what suggests it would go on Wii U.

          • OatMatadoQuatro

I read that the reason why Square moved from Nintendo to Sony was also related with criticism by Nintendo’s CEO regarding RPGs. Once the he left the company, Square restarted releasing FF games for Nintendo’s consoles (ports of FFIV, FFV, FFVI, etc)

          • I don’t think you could have missed my point any harder if you tried :|
This is a franchise that has had as many international releases on Nintendo hardware as Sony, all of which have been successful sales-wise. There is no reason to stay exclusive to Sony when they make 1.5. “There really isn’t any reason for this to not go on N’s console.” was me pointing out the logical fallacy of why it shouldn’t be Sony exclusive. KH isn’t a Sony game, it’s a Square game. It has wetn to multiple platforms in the past and considering the likely install base of the Wii-U, should do so in the future as well. And what do space limitations have to do with a system that has a BluRay drive?

          • Kefkiroth

I think you missed my point as well. Yeah, there’s no reason to be Sony-exclusive, I never said that. KH was never Sony exclusive.
I’m just saying making it for the Wii U in particular would make it unnecessarily more expensive than it should be considering their other projects. It would be great for Wii U considering the Wii U’s much bigger power over the PS3, I won’t deny that. Though since the original game and Re: Chain of Memories were on PS2, there’s not really a problem that it’s on PS3.

And I just brought up space concerns because that’s why FF moved to Playstation for a while. Of course the PS3 would never have space concerns, it’s just an example of a technical limitation it doesn’t have unlike the N64 did for FF, so there’s not much reason to migrate.

          • If you agree there’s no reason for it to be sony exclusive, then yeah. I missed your point, or rather, I missed what point you were trying to get at, since my *entire* point was that there is no reason for it to be exclusive. Something you just agreed with…

  • Are people seriously crying about not getting to play through the worst game in the series?

EDIT: My bad. I should say worst and most pointless. You know that SE isn’t going to implement any kind of online multiplayer or co-op, so the whole “play with your friends” and “use the rest of Org XII” parts would be ousted. Which means that it would be carried entirely on the plot. A plot that isn’t present until the closing hours of the game. No thanks.

    •  re: coded would like a word with you…

      • I guess there’s a cursing filter. I’ll wait to see it my comment is approved then.

        • Brandon001

why would you even curse here though? i understand your passionate about this but chill bruh, it is not that serious.

          • Why curse?

Because there is a difference between something being good, being hella good, being d*** good, and being good as f***.

          • Brandon001

      • I guess I’ll take the self censor route:

The same re:coded that actually expanded the plot and set up 3D? That re:coded?

Days was the only game that I can’t justify existing. Chain introduced Org XIII and justified the level reset in II. 3D does the same level reset for III and dumps a ton of plot on you. Coded explores what happened to Sora’s Heartless and finally lets Sora thank Namine, plus it sets up the events of 3D as well as revealing details about the unseen letter at the end of II. BBS and the numbered entries need no justification. What did Days do? Waste 75% of the game making the Organization less cool? Avoid the plot until the last few hours? Not introduce a single new world? If it had been half about what Riku was doing post Chain, I would forgive it. But it was just doing boring repetitive missions ad naseum. Re:coded at least changed the play mechanics up like that crazy Wonderland third person shooter stage.

TL;DR Re:coded wants to know why you are bothering it.

        • I’m bothering it because it was lackluster.

The points you bring up about coded’s story are superfluous; it only tied up tiny plot points that it needed to get out of the way whilst the overall story was ridiculously silly (by KH standards, anyways). In comparison, Days had roughly the same amount of plot. Leads into 3D? Sure, not like any other KH title has lead into another with a short clip at the end of the game, right? The reason why Days doesn’t introduce any new worlds is the same reason why coded didn’t, they’re both looking back at past events, literally for Days, and through the journal for coded. Days made the Org. less cool? How so? I thought the insight we got was neat, it was something I’d been waiting for for a long time. Finally, the missions, if you didn’t like them you didn’t like them. I didn’t like nor dislike them, but I thought it was necessary for the multiplayer aspect, which was infinitely cool.

          • So somehow repetitive mission structure is not lackluster, but exploring brand new play mechanics on every stage is? LOL okay.

    • AuraGuyChris

Good thing Re:Coded is abscent from this collection, right?

      • RE:coded > Days. Graphic-wise. Gameplay-wise. Story-wise.

This coming from a person who’s favorite character in the series is Xion.

        • Anime10121

Agree wholeheartedly with everything you said,(except for the favorite character thing, my fave will always be the original trio of SRK with Sora nudging out the lead a bit for being a loveable goof, oh and I love Aqua too, shes awesome) I had MUCH more fun playing Re:Coded, than I did playing Days.  Days may have had a story with more “impact”, but it drudged along SO SLOWLY and most of the dialogue was just drabble and Sea Salt Ice Cream on top of Twilight Tower.  Days had SO much potential to actually develop members in the Organization like Larxene, Marluxia, Luxord, etc.  but it failed to do anything with anyone besides Roxas, Axel, Xion, and maybe a little Xemnas and Saix.

Re:Coded however, changed things up in every world, and made each location unique.  The gameplay was awesome of course, because while not being a carbon copy of BBS, it was close enough, with enough changes to make it fresh.  Now the story was complete horse manure, but the gameplay was great, and I love how it changed in every location.  I had a much better time with Re:coded’s worlds than I did with Day’s slow moving mission structure.

          • Aqua is my number two. I love the character, but good lord Willa did not sound like she wanted to be in the recording studio. And she’s usually fantastic too! Xion played with my Kairi keyblade wielder fantasies that I’ve had since KH2, which *SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS* might finally come to fruition in KH3.

          • Anime10121

I thought the same, at the beginning, but she actually progressively got better, and towards the end of the game, I thought she did a great job!  Terra did the same, although at a much lower level than Aqua.  His voice went from grating in the beginning, to ok by the end.  Jesse’s Ven was of course, perfect!

On Kairi, cant wait to see where they take her character next.  I really wanna see Kairi grow into something awesome, she deserves a prominent role in 3, and I hope Nomura gives it to her.  I just hope Hayden Pennetierre will be available to do her voice, as she IS Kairi to me, cant picture anyone else doing her voice.  Namine on the other hand, while Brittany Snow sounded great, I like her replacement Meghan Martin MUCH more.

          • @Anime10121:disqus  in reply to your last comment.

I’m pretty sure that *SPOILERS* considering the secret ending of 3D, Kairi is going to be very prominent in III.

I don’t think Jason did well at all. That was made when SE was on a big television star kick (Jenson Ackles from Supernatural and Yvonne Strahovski from Chuck were in Third Birthday, Jason Dohring from Veronica Mars and Willa Holland from Gossip Girl were in BBS) but I wish they would have when with more regular VA’s. I would have loved for Dan Green to have done it. Or Brad Swaile. Or even JYB. I’m surprised he isn’t in the series yet.

      • Also, why would Re:Coded be in a KH1 collection? It’s after KH2.

    • I get it. You don’t like Days. I liked it, and would have liked an upscaled version. I’m not crying about not getting it, though.

      • If you actually aren’t crying about it, then my comment wasn’t directed at you :|

      • Also, don’t assume. I like Days by virtue of it being a KH game, but I like it much less than any other game in the series. Xion is my favorite character in the franchise. But I don’t want them to waste time remaking what is arguably the worst game in the franchise when they could be focusing effort on Versus XIII and KHIII.

    •  I actually didn’t mind the game. Especially the last part, rain music, etc. Don’t want to post anymore since spoilers and what not

      • You more or less have agreed with me. Most of the game *except the last part* wasn’t that good.

        • DCBlackbird

Isn’t the fact that it was bad more reason to remake it

          • Because all the people who hated Chain of Memories just fell in love with RE:Chain of Memories, right? RE:CoM has a lower Metacritic average than the original. Polishing a turd doesn’t make it not stink.

          • DCBlackbird

            Wow that was clever………..too clever

          • Sarcasm doesn’t translate across a digital medium.

Edit: Not sarcasm also doesn’t translate. And I’m more or less incapable of relating to normal people :<

          • DCBlackbird

Not sarcasm I actually thought it was clever in a comical way

          • [redacted]

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Re: 358/2 Days would have been a good remake if Square removed most of Roxas’ solo mission and replace them with group missions. Also, more bosses could make it better (like actually fighting Riku/Ansem)

  • Mr. Nomura-san, It’s not too late, it’s never too late, please make it. or, OR a full-length CGI Movie hehe

    • Was would that even consist of? 70 minutes of emo feelings and ice cream with 20 minutes of fighting at the end?

  • kevinposta

I won’t lie, I was deeply dissapointed when they announced it was only movies for Days since I wanted to see how the game would work with proper local multiplayer and expanded maps.
However, now that I think about it in cold, Days is pretty much KH2 maps with missions and very samey characters sans some original bosses here and there. While I love the panel system I think that in a greater scope, if they put all KH games in PS3 then Days wouldn’t be worth a full remake.
I still want a remake, but…I can totally see why they just remade the most important cutscenes.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Re: 358/2 Days no just make 3 already

  • Göran Isacson

All in all, I’m kinda okay with this. I’m one of the crazy people who liked some of the gameplay concepts of 358/2 Days (the add-ons to blocking and dodge rolls and the panel systems limitations), but the controls weren’t that engaging, the stages weren’t that interesting, and the pacing… well. Suffice to say that I don’t think people will suffer from just watching the pertinent story clips. And besides, now they can actually ADD cutscenes depicting Mickey and Riku falling out in a natural, respectful and engaging manner instead of just have Mickey promised he’d always be there for Riku after CoM and then just have Riku go “lol no only angst and misery and hanging with bad influence!Cristopher Lee now”.

I will never NOT be butthurt over that decision. NEVER. NOT.

  • Levin_Scorpius

E-effort?! In my SE approved port?! I can’t imagine what has caused Square to distort.

  • rurin

I thought the comment about playing in chronological order was nice…
It kind of semi makes me wish I started with this collection instead of playing 1, 2, then all the prequels…
