Core Kagura Series Will Be For 3DS (Or Its Successor), Spinoffs For Other Consoles

By Spencer . October 5, 2012 . 3:00pm

imageMarvelous AQL is bringing Senran Kagura to other handhelds, but producer Kenichiro Takaki says the main series will be for Nintendo 3DS.

“We would like to continue the main series on the Nintendo 3DS or if there is a successor to the 3DS, Kagura will continue there,” Takaki said to Siliconera. “But, we definitely want a lot of users to play and experience the game so you can count on different forms of the game coming out.”

Senran Kagura started on the Nintendo 3DS, and a sequel, Senran Kagura Burst: Crimson Girls, came out earlier this year. Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus, a Dynasty Warriors style game is coming to PlayStation Vita in February 2013 with 10 new characters.

Since Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy is on Steam and Takaki-san worked on that title I asked Takaki if he is considering bringing the Kagura beat ’em ups to Steam as well.

“Right now, we don’t have plans,” Takaki answered. “One of the things, is a lot of the art was made specifically for the 3D features of the 3DS, so it wouldn’t be an easy port, but if the opportunity presented itself we would like to try.”

Marvelous AQL is still evaluating Steam as a potential platform for other titles and Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy is their litmus test.

I’d love to see a Senran Kagura game on ps3.

    • I wouldn’t count on it since the PS3 might be outdated by 2013-2015.

      • Nameless App 1989

Playstation 2 started in October 2000, and ended around 2008-09.
Playstation 3 started on 2006. 2013-2015, it might still be standing, unless there is a Playstation 4, or what ever Playstation 3’s successor is named is released next year

      • “2013”

Just because something is outdated in terms of technology doesn’t mean it can’t be supported. 3DS is very outdated in terms of tech, and yet it still receives games.

        • He may used the word outdated, but he meant dying down sales wise. The 3DS is already turning to the lead platform and most of the games are being made for it. By next year with the 3DS, Wii U going strong  their will be less and less games for the PS3.

          • Dying down in sales does not negate the userbase it has. PSP is dying down in sales and still receives a lot of support because it has a gigantic userbase to sell to.

      • Spectacularity

I think 2013 is a bit too early.

      • psvita already out, yet it’s not yet “outdated” in japan

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Since its not getting localized anytime soon I’ll love to see it on the Wii-u :D oh wait..

  • Just keep making more, don’t care what platform. Here is hoping one eventually gets localized.

Sounds good to me. I just hope that the eventual Senran Kagura 2 has better frame rates. Other than that, keep doing what you’re doing.

Though it makes me wonder how things will work in canon. Gonna assume Shinovi new characters and the older characters won’t continue off from where Burst left off, which is kinda disheartening.
But as long as I get my Hibari its all good.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I can see them making a few spin-offs on the Vita (depending on the success of the first one, of course) as well as for the Wii U as their base console versions (more-so for the prospect of Wii U/3DS connectivity).

Oh, I almost forgot. They’ll be a mobile or a browser version within a year, cuz almost everything under the sun gets one of those… =/

    • I dunno. Vita is struggling mightily and Kagura is already established as a 3DS series. A social/mobile game is inevitable as is SK2 for 3DS. A downloadable version for XBLA/PSN I think is more likely than another Vita game. I just dont think Shinovi Versus will be successful.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

        A few responses:

1a) There could be more Vita games. That’s why I said the future of the spin-offs on the Vita will “depend on the success of the first one”.
1b) You’re talking about the Vita’s current sales numbers. We have no way of accurately predicting how they will be by the time the Shinovi Burst comes out early next year. For all we know, the Vita could explode over the holiday season…
        2) I highly doubt there could be a PS360 d/l version. The 360 is dead in JPN and I don’t think the PS3 would really benefit from having one other than the fact it would be there.
        3) Like I said before, a Wii U version is more likely. They could actually innovate the franchise if they used the console’s touch pads in some way.

        • 1. Well naturally they’d make more games on a system if the first was successful.

1b. It’s not just current sales, its lifetime sales. They’ve been terrible since launch and show no signs of improving. There is no reason to believe they’ll explode except blind faith.

          2. The 360 is dead in Japan and yet it’s still getting niche games like Phantom of the Inferno.

      • A PSN/XBLA game is about as likely as these games leaving Japan.

Which I’m happy to say isn’t very likely at all.

        • You’re happy a game might NOT be localized?

  • Shiki

So , does that mean that i should get a japanese 3DS ? OH GOD!!!!!

  • One can never have too much Senran Kagura =^_^=

  • Hoshi星

So, Musou game: Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus on Vita, Sucessor/sequel: Senran Kagura 2 on 3DS, Party game for the heck of it: Senran Kagura Party on the Wii U and hm…a first-person game: Senran Kagura Steathly Kunoichi on PS3?

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Senran Kagura Party? That would be to much boobies/butts  for the Wii-u to handle

      • Wii-U->3DS connectivity is something that could be considered…

    • Göran Isacson

Senran Kagura Party makes me think of a Sengoku Basara/Senran Kagura crossover.

Where EVERYONE can suffer clothing damage.

      And punch out tornadoes.

I think I really, really want to play this hypothetical game now. Want big-boobied girls? Play hte Senran characters! Want tons of bishonen and bara? Play the Basara characters!

  • ;_;

  • Hinataharem

It’s only a matter of time before it hits IOS or gets a social game

Well i kinda understand why Takaki said this lol. He is trying to grow the brand on 3DS  as currently they are selling greatly while trying to gamble on the game outside of 3DS as well as trying to attract more gamer into the main game.

This makes me remember about Summon Night lol. All its numbered game is released on PS consoles but all its spin off is released on Nintendo consoles to increase awareness for the genre and try to come out with a new type of genre.^_^

    • sfried

Actually, they rereleased Summon Night 1 & 2 on the DS if I recall correctly, but only in Japan.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yeah, but they never actually comes here.Sadly.T_T

  • Darkrise

So long as the games are continuously released, even in NA, The Brotherhood will be greatly pleased.

  • ギャビン

I got a japanese 3ds just to play these games, they are fun. Going to get the vita game too, looks shit hot.

  • Pretty cool that the series is successful enough for spin-offs and hints at future sequels, I guess.
