These Demons Are In Shin Megami Tensei IV

By Spencer . October 5, 2012 . 6:45pm

imageDid you notice the hero player’s party in the extended Shin Megami Tensei IV trailer? He has three really powerful demons Beelzebub, Surt, and Black Rider. No wonder he makes mince meat out of Girimehkala.

Atlus revealed more demons than those. There’s a fight with Titan and Kelpie shown too where are easily defeated. Did you notice which demons the protagonist had?

Balor, Hokuto Seikun, and Abaddon.

Another battle shows Dantalian Bifrons, Ose, Halphas, and a demon from Strange Journey  that I can’t recall Melchom (thanks Tommy Lee!).

Hua Po, Genbu, and Jack Frost are seen in this battle.

In the battle against the Frost family – King Frost, Black Frost, Jack Frost, and Frost Ace – the protagonist had Susano-o, Apsu, and Black Rider (again).

Makami and Momunofu are seen during demon fusion. The hero also has Kikuri-Hime and Yatagarasu in his party.

We also noticed Murmur, Kresnik, and Tenkai (not pictured) which appears to be a brand new demon.

Kougasa Burou is a new demon too. Many of the demons Atlus revealed in the trailer like Balor and Apsu are from Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, the 3DS Megaten game that included a trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV.

  • Tommy Lee

The demon whose name you couldn’t recall is Melchom.

  • Speaking of SMT4 Demons, does anyone know the name of the one who says something like ‘mene mene’? I read that his chant(?) means something as well, but I didn’t pay much attention and now every time I watch the trailer I get super curious about it.

    • Found this:

No mention of the demon/person in the game who says that…unless I somehow miss it.

      • Thank you for the link! The screen with his name on it moves really fast, but it’s something like ‘テイ夕ーン’ and I’m 100% sure I wrote it wrong…and I didn’t find a name in the wiki similar to it (then again I don’t see too well anyway).

        • Oh, you sure it’s that demon speaking? If that’s really the one…then its name is Titan. :o

          •  Yes! That’s what he looks like, except in the trailer he’s unmasked. However, @Tommy Lee says it’s not him who said it (so I wonder who did?).

          • Adrián Alucard

He appears in Strange journey too

        • Tommy Lee

It wasn’t the demon on the screen that was speaking the lines you’re wondering about. The text is really different from “Mene, Mene, Tekel u-Pharsin”.

          • Btw wht did Titan say?? Some sort of “Cool dude can I join your party”??

          • Tommy Lee

Something about something being useless. Just some stock battle line.

  • Awesome! I was able to tell most of these apart, but there were some I wasn’t able to recognize from the trailer. I’m glad most of these are familiar faces making a return.

    • keithmaxx

And by faces we mean the monsters, of course. :)

      •  LOL! Well, where it applies, at least :P

  • I think I recognized most of them when the trailer came out =] I hope Hare of Inaba is in the game too!

  • IshimaruKaito

did they say this was getting localized?

    • Barrylocke89

Not yet, but for this title I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.

      • Zeik56

If EO4 is coming over I can’t see any logical reason why they would pass up this game.

    • ATLUS wants your $$$ tht 4 sure.

    • They might localize soul hackers first before localize this

  • Kinda sad to see they’re reusing the art for the battles. . . again. . . even for their main-series in the franchise.

But, I probably will still get this game, after all; SMT is about great games. . . that tend to reuse assets from their; also still great, predecessors.

    • Zeik56

I do wish Kaneko would get around to redesigning some more of his demons, but since it doesn’t seem like he’s the lead artist this time around I’m not surprised it didn’t happen with this game. I’d rather see the iconic designs return than have someone else redesign them.

    • Well I mean they’re characters.  They don’t change the Pokemon designs between installments do they?

      •  Sugimori usually redraws them for remakes, but that’s a series where they usually never “redesign” them.

And they constantly change their pallets through each game (probably since there are so many, that they forget, or do not bother to have references for their colors).

That being said, the demon’s of today do look pretty much the same (save for a few) as they have since the NES era SMT titles. . .

  • *waiting for a picture of mara to taunt @drakosamatras:disqus *

    • Oh God NO.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

        Go Go “Chin-Chin” demon.^_^

  • personablaze

Maybe we will get to see Demi Fiend ^_^,Atleast I hope we will.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

…….Now i only need to hope for “Alice”.^_^ And of course if it is possible, Give us Demiurge!!!!

  • AweOfShe

    Ah Kikuri-Hime, how I love you. <3

  • Tales_of_Master

Soooo much nostalgia :D This makes me wonder who’s going to serve as the “Ultimate Boss” this time around ? Demi-Fiend would still be epic. Raidou is an optional boss in SH3D so we can rule him out. Serph would be awesome, and it would serve as a reminder that DDS actually existed. So excited to see who’s Atlus gonna go for :)

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I would love a new one here though.^_^ I think Akashic can also be a very strong monster for secret boss there.^_^ Ruler of the planes sounds really cool.^_^

      • Tales_of_Master

Well, I like my Cameo battles to be against previous main characters. Maybe I’m to used to the cameo battles in the Tales games. Having a demon be the ultimate boss, is kind of lame, since most of the demons are reoccurring enough that they don’t need a cameo. The main characters on the other hand rarely appear in games other than their own, so it’s more exciting to see them as an extra boss compared to a regular demon.

  • im not that familiar with this series, so he might be well know.
but the marshmellow porcelain creature aka jack frost..he is scary as hell O_O

    • pothier.adrien

Well, he is the mascot :)

    • Are you looking at the game screenshot or the artwork?  The giant one is King Frost and the little guy is Jack Frost.
First I hear somebody call him scary, he’s actually one of the friendliest of the demons.

      • Look up his description in Megaten wiki. Suddenly he don’t look tht cute anymore.
(Well Frosty is cute when he’s not murdering you lol)

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Considering Jack Frost…….is combination of ice fairy with Jack the ripper….. it is indeed not cute anymore lol.^_^

        •  Obviously but his general appearance in the games aren’t terrifying.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Example of don’t judge a “demon” by the looks lol.^_^’

Remember Pixie? And how scary she actually is?T_T(Reference to the Desu and its manga where Pixie is just as agressive as other demon there.)

          • Poor Io and Yuzu being Zio-ed…. Yeah any sexy demon is equally dangerous lol.

  • ShinoZero

Am I the only one who find the last demon looks like a Kamen Rider or a bad guy from any Sentai ?

    • MrTyrant

Probably because the share same designers. Atlus hired them and they are doing some bosses.

    • Tommy Lee

Kouga Saburou is one of the boss characters designed by an artist that has drawn monster designs for one of those series.

    • Adam Primaeros
  • MrTyrant

I hope to see new demons, plot bosses aside. SMT needs more demons and they need to change the look of some old ones, that’s why I was expecting Kaneko working in this game.

  • Unlimax

Damn I love SMT Series .. I Wish if there’s a port for other handhelds or platforms !

    Oh well : !

    •  You don’t like the 3DS?  Atlus is a heavy supporter of the platform so it isn’t a terrible idea to buy one for it.

      •  desu overclocked, soul hackers, and now SMT IV
atlus do love making SMT for nintendo

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, SMT series does started from Nintendo consoles there so Atlus is surely going to stay on Nintendo. Not to forget the fact that 3DS is doing really well here.

Here believe that we are going to get Desu 3 on 3DS lol.^_^

      •  It’s not like he/she doesn’t like it, it’s just because not many old handheld and consoles or PC users have enough/many money or time to buy another one or it just had the small improved looks graphic of the Good old PSP… with touch screen… (=-=’?  ) or maybe something else…

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Considering PSP is doing really well currently and many games actually moves to 3DS…… i don’t think the small improvement is going to be a big problem there.^_^

    • Vitor Duarte

I feel you bro.. will need to get a used one for this release. When it comes to europe..

  • DDanny

Don’t forget you can see Walter in there too, maybe npcs can support you in some way?

  • Scallion

    ….Recycled demon portraits?
The overworld looks really nice. Why didn’t they just render the demons, like in nocturne? I’m considering purchasing a 3DS just for this game, and I have to deal with the same artwork I saw in Strange Journey? At least Kaneko is doing the designs this t-oh, wait. And first person battles, too? It made sense in SJ because the whole game was done in first person, and it felt like a turn-based FPS rouge-like. Eh. I’m reluctantly going to buy this, but I’ll feel stupid for doing it within a day, I’m sure.
