Devil May Cry’s Lady Goes Demon Hunting In The Ghosts’n Goblins Universe

By Spencer . October 10, 2012 . 2:45am

Lady is going to have a field day in Project X Zone. One of the game’s missions takes place in Arthur’s universe, you know the knight from the Ghosts’n Goblins series. Lady along with Dante and Demitri will have to defeat Red Arremers, giant Mets, and a made-for-Project X Zone character called Duvet.

That’s the only thing I can’t stand about these types of crossover games.Giving the  enemies absurd amounts of hp and forcing the player to go all out on every enemy to win the most basic of battles.

    • Kibbitz

What exactly are you talking about when you say ‘absurd’? Most of the enemies I see in the video are killed with one full set of available combo strings from the characters backed by one or both support options, which usually equate to just one character’s turn. The ones with much larger numbers are bosses. How much less HP do you want them to have exactly?

      • $30632660

I’m talking about 5000 hp for a freaking Metool, a grunt enemy, aka fodder that the party members in that video just went all out on, aka Full Set of Combo Strings WITH Support.

The absurd amount of hp giving to the weakest of enemies in games like this makes combat boring and slow paced.Just like in Endless Frontier, but the constant random battles and other problems helped make that game boring.

        • Kibbitz

Yes, because the full combo string is the equivalent of just one Attack command. Most tac-strats and RPGs I’ve played generally don’t let me kill every enemy in one single Attack equivalent, so the time you take to do the combos balances out IMO with the amount of attrition and back-and-forth you would need in most regular games.

I loved Endless Frontier though EXCEED was much better mechanically, so I probably cannot see eye to eye with you on this, but what do you want from this? If you reduce grunt HP, what are you going to do to adjust? Reduce everything to one single combo string? If so, you’d be better served if it was like traditional strats where everything is either Attack or Tech/Spell.

        • Mecha Hisui

But the enemies in Endless Frontier were ridiculously easy and quick to beat.  And considering the scale compared to your own characters’ HP it’s not really all that “large”.  Not to mention what Kibbitz said about just a single combo set.

That said enemies do look like they can take a beating, but that’s mechanics for you.

          • Kibbitz

I’m actually looking forward to a point where I need support attacks to actually kill some stuff, to be honest =P They’re starting to appear where I am via enemies with starting BLOCK gauge and sufficiently high HP, but the start was boring to me in the other sense that I was able to mow down almost every grunt in one full set. Would love to play more, but I’m still holding off as much until tomorrow to try to register for that Jade Medal thing that was mentioned awhile back.

  • William Carpenter

Lady is pretty rad. Cool to see the support characters doing a lot of stuff in the overworld, and not just being a gameplay addition.

Also, woah, who’s the barely clothed ladies?

    • Kibbitz

Which ones? The brown-skinned one with pink hair is an original enemy. The one with black wings and what looks like a black tattered bodysuit and brown hair is a Sakura Taisen baddie.

      • D-Rev

        Are you talking about Blackrose?

        • Kibbitz

No, I was referring to Duvet.

  • heartless141

i hope it’s not just button bash though,
SRT endless frontier was fun because you actually have to time and stuffs to make sure it all hit.

    • Kibbitz

I’m on stage 9, which is a few stages past the last PV with Gemini and Erica.Si far, they do some variations on Endless Frontier’s system. Instead of the Evasion mechanic, some enemies have a BLOCK gauge which builds it up when damaged. If you drop them, they go back into BLOCK status, which obviously makes them harder to kill. Not something that applies to all, of course.

Also, juggling them perfectly increases your hit counter as per Frontier (dropping them resets it, if you recall) and you get +1% EXP per 10 full hits. However, hits done by your pair qualify as HITS and hits done while the enemy is being CROSSed by your support attackers are CROSSES, so 47 HITS and 43 CROSSES = +8% EXP, not +9%.

Edit: Looks like I’m wrong on that. Crosses count towards your hits and they look at MAX HITS for a % EXP bonus and CROSSES for another. Anyway, point is, you still want to chain properly to build hits for EXP and gauge since XP gauge, which you use to defend, counterattack and perform supers is a common thing like Frontier Gauge in Endless Frontier.

  • There’s just so much stuff happening on screen, love it! It’s like a buffed up version of Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume.

  • What songs are in this game? The fight with the Commando Metaur (0:50) as well as the Sakura Taisen + Tron vs the monster (2:20) have *very* familiar music… cant be….can it? Does Sega have a hand in making this? Are you seriously telling me they did NOT forget about one of their coolest under-the-radar arcade game with a cool music, otherwise known as “Gain Ground” and one of the more memorable piece made it into the game?:

    • Kibbitz

      • Just a promo.  There are a lot more tracks.  MMX Zero Theme, Devils Never Cry, Trembling City of Arisu, Path to Certain Victory, All Correct! etc.

        Just to name a few.

        • Kibbitz

You are indeed correct. I can probably ID the rest of the track list once I beat the game, since this looks like another sound library unlock set under System after the game is beaten. Still far from there though!

      • z_merquise

Is the song “Subarashiki Shin Sekai” (theme song in Namco X Capcom) included? I remember hearing that song in the previous 15 min. trailer but I wanted to confirm if that’s listed there.

        • Kibbitz

Yes, it’s one of the two themes that will play on Xiaomu and Reiji’s pair turn, with the other being Yuragi no Machi no Arisu. Hisshou no Kiseki is also in and plays when you do their Hissatsu. It’s this one, for reference:

  • IshimaruKaito

wow time flies! its hard to believe its coming out 2mrw and i found out about it some months ago!

  • XiaomuArisu

    I saw Heihachi!
So he will become part of the team!
    (Lee-style “Excellent”)

  • Göran Isacson

On the one hand, that sure seems like a lot of attacks and flashy stuff happening on screen just to take down ONE guy… but judging from the comments that’s apparently the norm for battlefield action? I wonder if it becomes like in Super Robot Wars, that it’s neat to see the super attacks play out like, two, maybe four times, but after a while you just want to skip through them.

  • Masengan

Man I’m a sucker for super flashy special attacks, and character cut-ins =]. This game looks epic, like watching anime.
