What Do You Do With A Game Of The Year Edition Without A GOTY Award?

By Spencer . October 15, 2012 . 3:30pm

imageDeep Silver bundled Dead Island with the Bloodbath Arena, The Ripper, and Ryder White downloadable content earlier this year. The re-release was called Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition because Gamecritics.com awarded the zombie action game with a coveted GOTY award.

Spike Chunsoft brought Dead Island to Japan, but the game didn’t get receive any Game of the Year awards in their territory. So, they renamed the re-release Dead Island: Zombie of the Year Edition. Zombie of the Year Edition comes out on November 1 in Japan.

“What do you do with a GoTY edition with no GoTY awards?”

First we laugh. Then they lie.

Then we do it all again next time.

I mean every western game and their mommas seems to get their own GoTY Edition. We all know what they mean is “Repackaged value edition of this game that just came out”.

    …^__^

Dunno, I’d give “Zombie of the Year” to the first boss of Lollipop Chainsaw. <_<

      Different years!

        …I knew that.

    Rated “Z” for Zombie!

this game got a game of the year award? i mean yeah i hear it was fun, but i also hear it was a huge let down….

  • SolidusSnake

Presumably not play it. Cuz, y’know, bad game is bad, regardless of whether anyone was crazy enough to give it awards.

For a loot based action game it’s plenty fun.

You just gotta know what you’re getting into. If you think this is going to be some deep social commentary with emotional scenes and great acting with momentous touching sequences that plays out like Heavy Rain with great zombie horror… Eh… yeah, you’ll not find it here.

But if you wanna loot and bash zombies in the head? Excellent.

I don’t really get why this is not as popular as something like Borderlands, though. Perhaps this is because I don’t “get” loot-based games, but they feel really similar to me, as far as gameplay is concerned. Heck Dead Island even has much a superior melee system.

      • SolidusSnake

I though it was boring as hell. If I wanna bash zombies in the head I’d take left 4 dead or resident evil over that game any day.

I agree. I find myself going back to L4D even though it’s been out awhile, but DR had/has something to offer.

The game became a real chore about midway through, and I would have dropped it if it didn’t have a moment that caught me off guard. It has the right ideas, but man, it needs an overhaul if they really want to make this a successful franchise – not to mention stand out from every other zombie game out there.

*Sigh* Every overhyped American game gets Game of the Year award these days, huh?

  • Testsubject909

Sooo… “the game didn’t get receive any Game of the Year awards in their territory.”

I’m not sure how you didn’t get receive something. But hey! Zombies!

  • Reno Evangelista

The fact that they’re still on about how this thing won any kind of award is a sign of how corrupt and bogus the entire game criticism scene is.

  • Fidelis

but they didnt even win that
