Persona 4 Arena Sales Surpassed Expectations, “Golden” Sales Also Strong

By Spencer . October 19, 2012 . 2:00pm

imageIndex Corporation reported sales numbers for Persona 4: Golden and the PlayStation Vita port sold 260,000 units in Japan since it was released on June 14. Total sales should rise next month when Atlus  publishes Persona 4: Golden in North America on November 20.

Persona 4 Arena was Atlus Japan’s first foray with the fighting genre and sales greatly exceeded the company’s expectations. Persona 4 Arena sold 220,000 copies. The hit titles contributed to Index Corporation’s bottom line in a big way.

Index Corporation reported 447 million yen in net profit or roughly $5.64 million.

Wow….. That’s really good im really interested to see how the Persona series story goes from here though.

    • xavier axol

can’t wait for persona 5! (which i hope it’s for this gen console), it would be awesome to see what they are doing.

    • OatMatadoQuatro

I believe that the story of Arena will continue in another fighting game or an anime film for the next reasons:
*Persona 5 needs to be easy to understand without having played previous games
*Arena did not end the case and would seem weird to follow it in 5 as Persona have tend to happen years after each other.
*Atlus will adapt Persona 3 into an anime film, attracting anime viewers if they made a sequel to Arena an anime.

  • I always wonder what this Persona 4 Arena is, people talk about~ *Is living in the EU*

  • Ethan_Twain

It occurs to me that a Persona 4 Arena port for the Vita is inevitable.  Hear me out:

    1.  Atlus has established the Persona 4 brand successfully on the Vita platform.

    2.  Persona 4 Arena has sold beyond expectations proving market viability.

    3.  Arc System Works has experience with this sort of conversion, having ported Blazblue to the Vita.

    4.  Atlus has a long history of porting every single Persona product to Sony’s handheld platforms.  Persona 4 Arena is just about the only one left unavailable there.

Honestly, I’m shocked this hasn’t been announced already.  I would bet money that this happens.

    • Brimfyre

Exclusive Rise and new Golden Girl playable.  Calling it now.

      • Wait…what? rise doesn’t even fight…

        • Xerain

But she can pole dance with a rainbow colored staff.

      • you mean Marie?

    • Xerain

Probably because the PS3 game is still selling well enough where they don’t want to cut into it’s sales.

    • RablaAndrews

Considering how the entirety of the Persona franchise bar Arena in playable if you own a Vita, this makes sense.

And considering BBCSEX it might be in Arc’s sights as well at ATLUS’s.

Would be cool if they did it.

      • Ethan_Twain

It took me a really long time to figure out why you were talking about sex on the British Broadcasting Corporation.  I thought the censorship laws over there were pretty strict!

BBC SEX.  What an unfortunate abbreviation.

    • Whoomp

Arc are also in the process of porting that Guilty Gear game with the really long title to Vita. I really hope you are right about your predictions, I just can’t devote myself to a console fighter anymore but having it on a handheld makes it much easier to pick up and just do a match anytime. The vita version of Extend got me back into BB.

  • malek86

Surprised at those sales, it essentialy doubled the opening week if I’m not wrong, and it will probably keep selling for another long while. I guess it helps that there are no other high-profile RPGs on the console yet.

    • Not so surprising! Remember, this game had what was effectively a year-long marketing campaign involving concerts, live stage plays, an anime series, manga, and an animated movie. Atlus marketed the Persona brand really, really hard this year.

      • kevinposta

I’m glad it all paid off though :D
This proves strong marketting always leads to great things.

  • ivanchu77

    Meanwhile in europe…

    • Prinnydoom

Couldn’t have said it better -___-

    • heartless141

i gave up ages ago >_>

      • Word. I have long since lost interest in P4 Arena.

  • Cool now how about adding junpei as a playable character? Or just add anyone?

    • Göran Isacson

IS there a place I can go to just gorge myself on all these amazing mock-ups, or will I just have to scrounge around on the Internet for them? Because they are pretty awesome.

      • Found them on /vg/ (4chan).

    • Pope The Rev XXVIII

what about the doggie in Persona 3? I can’t remember his name though. Or the Gourmet King!!!!!!

      The Gourmet King.

      • LynxAmali

    • someones gonna have to send these over to ATLUS because this is awsome.

    • Ladius

       Absolutely gorgeous.

    • dr000d

Or how about releasing it in Europe?

    • Include Marie too. With or w/out story mode XD

  • Domii

Are P4arena sales worldwide or Japan only?

    • Pope The Rev XXVIII

       I would guess Japan only

  • Demeanor

WHERE IS THIS GAME?!?!?! (Love from Italy)

Why in the world am I not playing it if I have a (usually) region free console, I am willing to fork the money and the game IS FREAKING READY SINCE AGES AGO??

  • I wonder how persona 4 arena did in Europe…oh right…

    • Herok♞

You do know that even if wasn’t region locked there still would not be region sales for it since Atlus doesn’t have a Europe branch, if you are going to blame anyone blame Zen.

      • Apparently they are waiting for a EU build from the developer so either they are bullshitting or the developer are the one who can’t provide. Though I do blame Zen for not dealing with this better.

  • Dammit, I hope my pre-order for P4G comes on the day of… I really want to play it, I don’t want to wait the 10 possible days or so EBGames had on their site :/

  • I want this game so much, but it isn’t worth blowing money for a Vita that’s gonna sit there when I’m done.

    …dEPRESSion.. lol

    • When you think for other games you want in Vita …nevermind

      • SEE!?

      • Fitzkrieg

Project Diva F is what sold me on the Vita, actually; P4G was just icing on the cake. Actually, given how much I like that game, it’s more like realizing that the cake that you got was actually just an appetizer and that the cake following it was ridiculously awesome in comparison.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Maybe you can try to look for other game there? Uncharted, Army Corps of Hell or even Gravity Rush is quite nice games.^_^

I myself haven’t get Vita yet here but i am kinda planning to in the future.^_^

    • Ladius

While Vita surely hasn’t an appealing lineup for the average gamer, I think it has a good number of nice titles for us lovers of niche Japanese games.

Gravity Rush, New Little King’s Story, Ragnarok Odyssey, Virtue’s Last Reward, Dokuro, Persona 4 Golden, Army Corps of Hell, BlazBlue CS Ex, DW Next (probably the best handheld Musou so far), Disgaea 3 AoD and others, not to mention confirmed or likely future localizations such as Dragon Crown, Ys Celceta, Earth Defence Force 3 Portable, Atelier Totori Plus, Muramasa and others (and, being region free, you can easily import Japanese games like Project Diva f that are unlikely to see an English release).

Some of them are updated portsremakes, though, which means that part of their charm could be lost if you already played them in other formats.

      • Persona 4 Golden not Arena.(yet)

        • Ladius

Yup, it was a typo :P It would be interesting to see Arena ported to handhelds, though.

  • Rei

    Pre-ordered 2 months ago and waiting… :)

  • Lester Paredes

yay! I can’t wait for the golden!

  • margherita mastropaolo

i’m waiting for persona 4 arena to be released here in italy

  • dr000d

Man it’s a shame P4A sold so good everywhere and Europe still doesn’t have it.

Thanks for region-locking the first PS3 game, Atlus.

  • Nerroth

Does anyone know how those numbers for P4 Arena compare to the kind of figures that Arc System Works pull in for their home-spun BlazBlue titles in Japan?

It would be interesting to note how things are looking from their side; and if further collaborations with Index would be worth continuing alongide the development of their own new works, such as Chrono Phantasma.

  • IshimaruKaito

1 more month and i get to enjoy this smexyness!!

  • Kittymimiko

    That’s great news!

And while fans in the EU are still waiting for it release here….

  • Too bad people are rewarding Atlus’ shady business tactics.

    • Herok♞

What shady bussiness practice are you referring to? The region lock thing would be a dick move, if they didn’t have plans to get the game to be released in Europe at all but they gave the product to a different company to be handled in the region and they dropped the ball. All the region lock was is something to protect their profits in the regions they deal with because of the different values of games world wide.

      • Speedo Redempteur

please there is no question that that was a dick move and for no reason except them wanting to control everything p4 related since they’re greedy..
there was nothing to protect except shody intrests

        • M’iau M’iaut

Protecting their interests — which means it is no different a decision than any other decision made by any other business in history. A decision for which there actually is a difference, Index actually publicly shared its business reasons.

          • Fitzkrieg

Something, I might add, that should garner them a HUGE amount of respect in the general community. Rare is it that a company gives a legitimate reason for a region lock, and their reason was more than legitimate.

        • Herok♞

So what you are telling me is that if you ran a business, you would sacrifice sales and profit to do the right thing? Because that is the quickest path to bankruptcy. Of course a company is going to control the product they made, you won’t find a single company that isn’t greedy, if you can find one I will drop this agreement. Yes the game was region locked, however it will be released in Europe but not by Atlus but by Zen, who are currently screwing up big time with the release of the game because they weren’t prepared enough. The region lock benefits Zen because the people who wanted the game probably would have imported causing them to lose money and screwing you guys over if the game continued on a region locked only system because Zen would see no profit from it, deciding there is no point in bringing it over. I could see the problem if there were plans for it to come out in Europe and if that was the case I could see the reason to be angry but it is coming out so you guys need to be patient if you still want the game.

    • Domii

I think you confusing Atlus with another publisher bro.

  • CountMarth92

Persona 4 arena was an amazing game, I liked Blazblue and this was very fun to play. Never stop being awesome, Atlus!!

  • HatsuHazama

    So… Europe?
