It’s A Sad Thing That Your Adventures… Oh, Shadowgate Is Coming Back?

Wow, Shadowgate. That brings back memories or throwing torches at wraiths and smashing a mirror only to end up in another dimension. Shadowgate was an early point and click adventure game where players wandered through a castle using items and spells written backwards to solve puzzles.

Zojoi, a newly formed studio with members from the original Shadowgate and "MacVentures" team, wants to create a re-imagined version of Shadowgate for the 21st century. The new Shadowgate will have new puzzles and apparently items you actually hold in your hand. The 8-bit chiptunes from the NES version are also included for the sake of nostalgia.

Before anyone gets to play the new Shadowgate Zojoi needs to raise money to make it happen and right now they’re about $100,000 short of their Kickstarter goal. For $10 early birds can get a copy of Shadowgate for PC or Mac. $60 gets you an iOS or Android version, soundtrack, and digital art book. If you want to see the Grim Reaper taunt you again – here’s the pre-order page.

Wow… I played the NES game like crazy! Even read the Nintendo Power Book “Before Shadowgate”. Loved the game, though I never did play the n64 version.

      Here’s a fun little fact:

“Before Shadowgate” is actually canon to Shadowgate and Beyond Shadowgate.

I really liked Shadowgate and always wondered if we’d ever see something like it again, so this is great news. Hopefully this passes and something comes of it.

    The art is gorgeous.

    Best re-imagining ever!

The link goes to the kickstarter page, which even though it could be considered a “pre-order page”, it´s more like “sends us money and we promise we´ll send you a copy when it´s finished” page.
Kickstarter is not responsible if the developer isn´t able to fulfill his or her promises.

You do have a point, and that’s a concern that applies to any developer: big or small.

However, if it makes you feel any better, Shadowgate won’t be Zojoi’s first game release.  They have the Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective video mysteries 1-3 available on iTunes for iPad2 * iPad3, and also have PC & Mac versions available on Desura.

      Hope that helps :)

Yeah, I know. I don´t mean to say Zojoi is not trustworthy. I was only pointing out that the article mentions the linked page is a pre-order page, which it isn´t at least according to Kickstarter´s policy.

          Ahhh, I getcha.

You are right that there are still people out there who don’t quite grasp the nature of KickStarter.  You could “think” of pledging as a means of “pre-ordering”, but to say you are putting a pre-order down is inaccurate.  It’s not like the game will be out in a couple of weeks.  I believe the target is to have it done by November 2013, provided the KickStarter succeeds.

And even so, the KickStarter has to succeed above all else!

Funded for the $95 boxed edition. Loved Shadowgate, Uninvited and Deja Vu. The Kickstarter video looks like they’ve got it pretty solidly in development and they’re already $30k into their $120k after only having launched yesterday. It looks like this should be happening.
