Disgaea 5 Will Have A New Setting And Characters, PSP Is For Otome Games

By Spencer . November 7, 2012 . 1:30pm

Nippon Ichi’s president Sohei Niikawa spoke to Dengeki and portions of the interview leaked online. Nippon Ichi will focus on PlayStation 3 and Vita development in the future, but they haven’t given up on PSP. Niikawa says Nippon Ichi will make otome or girls games for PSP. Right now, Nippon Ichi is working on their next PlayStation Vita title. Hmm… I wonder if it’s Disgaea 4 Portable?

Niikawa acknowledged fan requests to continue the horror adventure game series Hayarigami and said he’ll consider this. Nippon Ichi recently published a PlayStation Vita game that had players investigate paranormal events as a journalist.

Disgaea 5 will be like other numbered Disgaea titles with a new world setting and characters. I wouldn’t be surprised if Laharl showed up in the game though. He’s in almost as many NIS games as Prinny.

  • CudaBiro

Nice to hear that they plan on shifting focus to the Vita.

    • drproton

At this rate I’ll have two copies of every N1 game instead of just one.

      • Wafflenaut

I just want a Disgaea with the HD graphics on the Vita. I played 3 for the first time on a Vita, and it was good, but the sprites just paled in comparison to the Disgaea 4 sprites.

  • Wafflenaut

    Thank goodness, more Vita games.

    • Godmars

Yeah, bit of  concern if they didn’t mention the PSV in the full interview. The PSV needs to absorb the PSP.

  • Dammit. On one hand I need to go finish Disgaea 3 and play 4 just because 5 is probably due out soon. On the other hand, if I hold out a little while longer I may be able to get Disgaea 4 on Vita from the getgo! Decisions~! ><

  • Herok♞

My only request is that we get another hero like Adell as the protag this time or Asagi.

    • AuraGuyChris

Oh no, I like Disgaea when it has a very quirky protagonist like Laharl, Mao, and Valvatorez. Adell is just too serious and it made Disgaea 2 feel like a romance novel…

      • Herok♞

Understand what you mean all I am saying is I want someone else who is a hero like Him, Almaz, or Aurum to be a main character.

        • BadenBadenPrinny

Honestly I’d rather have a Fallen Angel for a protagonist for D5. Celestia isn’t used enough

          • Herok♞

Artina was a Celestian so I would say its still used.

          • Locklear93

Not to mention Disgaea 3’s DLC actually took us to Celestia for an invasion. <_<

          • MrTyrant

Or an Angel who loves the demons way of living? that would be funny.

        • MrTyrant

          A Dark hero! …oh wait.

But i think you mean that you want a human Hero as a main character again but it would be better if this “hero” has s darker personality.

          • Herok♞

something like that would work for me.

      • Locklear93

I don’t mind quirky, but as far as Adell, it was nice having someone not willfully oblivious to everything.  No amount of quirkiness fixes it for me when characters make me facepalm and say, “Really?”  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like Adell was especially smart, but he also wasn’t easily manipulated by his ego (Laharl), simply delusional from time to time (Valvatorez), or a complete imbecile, incapable of comprehending the most basic facts even when placed directly in front of him (Mao).

…yeah, I didn’t like Mao a lot. <_<  I actually really like Valvatorez and don't hate Laharl, but as stereotypical as Adell was in a lot of ways, I did enjoy a protagonist who was at worst somewhat oblivious, though Rozalin really did steal the show for me.

      • MrTyrant

This! I hated Adell for that. I mean he was cool as a character but not as main character. Give me another ruler kind of tyrant as main character with a funny sense of humor. It could be human, demon or even angel and also could be a female main character, why not? as long as it retain the characteristic of the previous main demons.

Laharl and Valvatorez were my favourite main characters. Valvatorez was the most “kind” of them and also the strongest main character since in his past he had some crazy stats but always respecting his vassals. It may also be the first main character that respect the prinnies to a certain degree and fight for them. Even Kricheskoy respect him as a ruler/comrade.

    • Hidayat246

Asagi is Makai Kingdom Protagonis if i not wrong so basically she only appear in Other title NIS just for cameo

      • Herok♞

Asagi has never been the main character so its a running joke at NIS now.

        • Makai Wars was supposed to be her game but it is in nowhere land, but I am hoping Asagi will have a game soon.

        • komiko12

I kinda hope that she would have the Guiness record of having the most video game appearances.

          • Herok♞

Sadly mario will never lose it.

          • komiko12

Hmm.. Forgot all about him. He never made that much of an impression on me he didn’t have remarkable qualities as a character.

      • Locklear93

No, Zetta was the protagonist of Makai Kingdom.  Asagi’s first in-game appearance was Makai Kingdom, but it was just a cameo affair there, too.

        • Guest

oh i mean makai wars not makai kingdom just like @auragar:disqus says

  • Honestly, I’m still working on Disgaea 4 for the PS3 simply because I have other crap to do and games to play, and each Disgaea is *huge*.  I haven’t beaten the DLC yet and have barely dented the endings and trophies.

Disgaea 3 has a similar issue for me, and doesn’t have the option to import your progress from the PS3 version, so why would I want to start from scratch again in 4 when I can’t even keep up with the releases as is?  It just leaves me feeling jypped that I spent all this money to get the games new and grab the DLC only to have it come out for 30 bucks with scenarios my version doesn’t have access to that would require another 50-100 hours of my time again just to witness anyway.

What I’m saying here is what determines if I’d buy a D4 Portable is if I can import saves or not, just like with D3 before it.

    • Crazy_O

Well once you arrive at CoO it’s basicly farming.
Hardest part is getting your mech parts together.

    • WingsOfEternity

Not to mention how much DLC helps you accomplish things faster. On my PS3 D3 I’m still gearing up for Baal fight with over 125 hours clocked. On my D3 Vita I already beat Baal with maxed Trapazohedrons and LoC unlocked in under 80 hours.
Most of the gameplay mechanic changes are almost directly taken from D4 (triple evilities for monsters, infinite item god kill), which could’ve just easily been a software patch… I DO feel kinda ripped off but I also want to support Vita and NIS, so I’m somewhat neutral.

      • I want to support Vita too, but I’m finding it difficult since mine has found a way to break already and customer support is kinda giving me the cold shoulder.  Makes it hard to recommend the console in its present state.

I guess I’m glad the portable versions happen because they’re good deals and expand the audience, but I still feel ripped off for the time I put into D3 and how I can’t import that data into the handheld version.  I’d understand not being able to import back, even, because of changes to the handheld over the console version, but the fact is I’m slow at these (Baal in 125 hours?  geebus, dude, I haven’t even opened Ordeals yet, Class World is balls distracting to me…) and I don’t really feel like starting over again because I will most likely never catch up to where I was again. :S

It’s mostly a personal thing (both the time it takes me to do things, and the fussing over importing data).  Disgaea games are great and there’s so many different ways to play them and goals to have (your Baal run versus my innate desire to make someone with a move range of “suck on this you dirty fools” while building a party simply known as “one of everything k thx”, for example, or my roommate’s skill grinding in Disgaea 1, and one friend’s aim to beat the games using only story characters and playing each map once with no grinding because it needs to be harder or something), and the bigger the audience the better, but the early adopters of NIS games tend to always get the worst version, and I’m starting to feel a bit screwed. :/  (Exception: Disgaea DS. PSP’s upgrades do not make up for graphical loss and almost no voice work, though that is the version I finally beat.)

  • This news and alll that is within it… music to my ears/eyes?

  • And you can never have enough Laharl and/or Prinny. Long live the Disgaea series!

  • AkuLord3

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Laharl showed up in the game though. He’s in almost as many NIS games as Prinny.”
Asagi is in the corner crying…She’s the Cameo Queen!!!…sadly
So much Nippon Ichi games to be brought…OHHHH better save up :3

  • Raharu95

  • GreekGod88

yes Disgaea 4 Vita would be amazing!!
glad i stopped at 30h for the ps3 version i want to play it on my vita.
Disgaea Games are waay more fun on portable devices imo

you guys think Disgaea 5 will be out for Ps4 ?
    This gen is almost over..

btw get for your Vitas ClaDun x2 and Z.H.P these games are very addicting xD

    • Nemesis_Dawn

I see Disgaea 6 as a PS4 title. Disgaea 5 will probably be one of their last PS3 titles.

  • Joseph Steinhilpert

keep the series on ps3 and you got my money. and remakes to the handhelds.

would love a remake of 3 and 4 but 3 never caught my attention much 4 did thou but still wouldn’t make me go out and pay for a vita when I still have a perfectly good psp to play all my psp games on.

can’t wait for D2, god and fate paradox, and disgaea 5.

    • 3 is already on the vita, unless I missed your point.

  • I will buy that game sight unseen. I like the portable versions a lot because it lends itself to play that way.

  • Yuriangels

Dood!! more Prinny are always great!

  • SLick123456789111

    ▶▶▶Disgaea 5 should be set in Heaven◀◀◀

     ☁☁ ☁ ☀ ☁ ☁☁

& feature a new female protagonist or Asagi.

    •  I actually like the idea of the heaven setting

    • Barzh

       That’d be great actually

    • I disagree on heaven and it will not happen.

      • komiko12

Yeah. In Japan, Disgaea is known as “Makai Senki Disgaea” which translates to “Hell Chronicles Disgaea.”

        • I knew it was something like Demons or Hell or something.

    • Well… atm we have God and Fate Revolution Paradox.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

I have a Vita, but I haven’t picked up any of the Disgaea titles on it. I like playing JRPG’s on a big tv, where I can spend a lot of time playing them. I know there’s extra scenarios in the portable versions, but there’s still so much I haven’t unlocked or gotten to in the PS3 versions, I don’t really care if I’m missing out a little bit. Just keep Disgaea 5 to PS3 with maybe a port to Vita a year or later and I’ll be happy.

  • While I’m more excited for D2, I really want to see what they will do with Disgaea 5. . . female protagonist? Non-netherworld setting? More Classes? Mages being useful again?

  • Wackoramaco87

I wasn’t aware that Nippon Ichi did any otomes, except for the one that came out earlier this year which was done with, er, Gust and Idea Factory, I think? Though, I could have my companies completely confused- I’m curious to see what sorts of games they’d have.

Glad to see more games come out on Vita, I’d love to see more games different then the “usual” Disgaea. That being said, can’t wait to hear the news about Disgaea 5!

    • kroufonz

they developed Uta no Prince sama series which is quite big otome game franchise and even already get anime, the weird thing is they aren’t the publisher of those series, broccoli is.

  • SprintsMcGee

I wish that NISA hadn’t given up on the PSP…or at least releasing Physical PSP games instead of digital.

    • Why? The Vita is the current console, and it really needs games.

      • SprintsMcGee

Because there are still a lot of games out there that I want, but are too poor to import. There aren’t that many VITA games yet, or at least Vita games that I think NISA would be the ones to localize, so right now I’m wanting more PSP releases, like Makai Kingdom PSP, than VITA releases. And when I say PSP releases, I mean physical as a preference. That’s just my opinion though.

        • Oh you are talking about localization only? Well meh… I can agree to some extent then though I would prefer digital for obvious reasons.

        • Elvick

I’m with ya. Praise be to Aksys and Atlus for their retail releases this year on PSP. I bought them all.

Anytime Xseed picks up a PSP game to bring over, or even Vita games, I die inside. So many digital only releases, and usually priced terribly on top of it.

I mean, is it so much to ask for a limited retail release? :/

  • Hopefully, Asagi is the main character :P

    • Dylan Neill

      Spoilers: She wont be.

  • puchinri

An otome game? I’d like to see that. An otome RPG would be nice though, please. (Rhapsody spiritual successor with strong otome elements~?)

    • I’d love a Marl Kingdom Game.

Wonder if they’ll be able to resist porting the PS2 one to the Vita or 3DS….

      • puchinri

Same~. Even if it’s not another entry in the series, something that’s obviously a strong, spiritual successor would be grand. (The series really doesn’t get much love from them anymore, after all.)

It’d be nice to see a port of all the games. ♥

  • >Niikawa says Nippon Ichi will make otome or girls games for PSP.
    My expressions:  (°∧ ° ||| )
Can we at least get 7D2020 and/or Sol Trigger before you give up?

    • pretty sure they’re talking about developing, not localizing.

      so don’t lose hope.

    • Eh, isn’t tht NISA job??

    • puchinri

That’s publishing, not developing though. And we can still have both! (I mean otome games and the others.)

  • More Vita games in general makes me happy but I also prefer my Disgaea games portable (a good thing really, or those hundreds of hours would make me quite the masochist!) and I am very much looking forward to playing Disgaea 4 on my Vita.

  • HassanJamal

Cool, i hope they make a Disgaea 4 portable OR a vita exclusive SRPG. Ill hold up on buying the PS3 version till that exclusive is revealed!

  • An Otome game by Nippon-Ichi… <3 Sadly, I doubt one of them'll even come out in America. I don't think I've seen any Otome games released here that you didn't have to order online.

  • Tianyu Wei

Given the capability of the VITA… they should just make future Disgaea mothership titles with VITA spec as base, and allow cross-play on the PS3… or at least let you use the save from PS3 on the VITA version… each Disgaea game is like hundreds of hours of investment… and I can’t bring myself repeating that process twice :/

  • Roses4Aria

I just wish we had some idea as to how well Hakuoki did for Aksys in its North American release.  Then we might be able to guess as to whether or not there was any hope that we might actually see some of those PSP otome games over here. :(

  • Willi Meyhoff

I never got very far on the Disgaea games mainly because I never seemed to get anywhere. Then thinking that there’s 9999 levels, I just seem to give up all together.
I really want to love the games, but HOW do you guys keep up with it?!

  • Guest

    PSP = Otome Games?
I wanted more things like Disgaea Infinite. A Visual Novel with Asagi as its protagonist would have been acceptable too…
I would have liked the news only if He would have said Visual Novels in general… or that they wont focus on Vita. I cant afford a Vita. orz.

  • Firekitty

The idea of an NIS-made Otome game makes me unreasonably happy.

Even better would be a fusion Otome VN x SRPG.
