What’s New In Tales Of Hearts R, It’s Not Just 3D Graphics

By Spencer . November 8, 2012 . 1:02am

The "R" in Tales of Hearts R stands for re-imagining and Namco Bandai made a bunch of changes when bringing the game to PlayStation Vita. On the presentation side, Tales of Hearts R has 3D models instead of sprites and full voice acting for the main story. Namco Bandai also made over 10 new anime event scenes for the PlayStation Vita version.

Battles are in 3D too. Tales of Hearts R has a new system where you can chase enemies in the air and keep your combo going.

The game has a field map now instead of the dungeon roads that connected the world in the DS release.

Calcedny Arcome who was a NPC in the DS version is a playable character in Tales of Hearts R. Even when he was a kid, Calcedny was a skilled swordsman. He became the commander of the Crystal Knights and a follower of the Baraya faith.

  • Randy Marsh

This looks really awesome, but the character models on the world map look a tad too big.

    • It’s old classical RPG for ya. Forget that fact, I really missed those world map travel in nowaday J-RPG.

      • ShinGundam

Ni No Kuni, Lost odyssey, Resonance of Fate, Arc Rise Fantasia, DQ9, 4Wol, FF Type 0, BDFF all say hi to you.

        • Randy Marsh

          Ah man, you got me!

        • Rogerrmark

Yeah, except that they are all exception, not general rule anymore.Resonance of Fate was a grid, and too diferent from traditional RPG world map as well.

      • xavier axol

dragon quest VIII had one of the best if you ask me, level 5 did a brilliant job there and i hope that ni no kuni is just as amazing with world maps.

        • Rogerrmark

Agreed,DQVIII mixed the best of two worlds. The map was very oldschool, but the villages didn’t have disproportional size in comparison with the character.Felt somehow like one of the maps from the 3-D Zeldas.

Wild Arms V was kinda like DQVIII as well.

          • xavier axol

It was one of the reasons i didn’t like how square enix move the brand to handhelds when dragon quest did great both here in the states (i’m guessing e.u. too) and japan. the characters models look better on console and the feel of the game can’t be duplicated on handhelds.

          • LightZero

DQ always goes to best selling system in Japan. This has not changed. The DS was the best selling system. The Wii is the best selling console. Hence why they got DQ games. The PS1 and PS2 got DQ games because they were extraordinarily popular in Japan. DQ8 and potentially DQ11 will be on the 3DS. Handhelds (and smartphones) is where the money is for Japanese developers plus it cheaper and have less risk. So whatever prejudice you have against handhelds you need to get rid of it if you are a fan of the series that is.

    • Looks like their taking some kind of things from Xillia…maybe.

      • Randy Marsh

But Xillia has no world map. The areas are connected by roads like in Graces.

        • That’s false actually. You cannot get to every area like in Graces with Xillia. But I won’t spoil.

  • refrain

So the skill did consume TP after all…

    • s07195

Not necessarily. We still don’t know it after all. Even the first trailer didn’t have *ANY* kind of consumption.

  • Prinnydoom

Ok so i have a question I am assuming that kohak will still be named kohak and not amber like in graces f

    • Ladius

If the game is ever localized, I think they will rename her Amber, just as they did for her Graces cameo.

      • xavier axol

it would be a good move if they rename her amber.

      • puchinri

        That’s unfortunate.

    • Randy Marsh

Her name will always be Kohak in the Japanese versions.

    • Romored

Kohak(u) means “Amber”, in Japanese, so I don’t see the problem with her being named like that. Those who don’t know Japanese wouldn’t understand the meaning of her name, otherwise.

  • Tales_of_Master

The game defiantly looks gorgeous. I’m really liking the new 3D battles, despite the fact that I enjoyed the 2D battles in ToH originally. ToHR defiantly looks better than ToIR, and I’m looking forward to this. Here is hoping that Baba’s wish to get ToH to the west would be granted this time around.

  • xavier axol

after seen all those pictures, i really want to see another trailer.

  • Masengan

I honestly thought that Calcedny Arcome was a girl, it must be that breastplate… Or some kind of reminder of Jeanne D’Arc from the PSP game.

    • MrTyrant

Me too and could have been better to have a female antagonist .

    • puchinri

Why the breastplate? That’s actually a very practical breastplate and realistic (surprisingly!). Does remind me of Jeanne D’Arc a bit though, I can see that. x’D

  • N9ne_Galoodotcom

Is this version gonna get localized?

    • Elvick

Who knows. It’s got a shot. More son than Innocence R I’d say.

Which is dumb, they should establish the IP on the system with Innocence R. Then Hearts R will do better as a result.

      Namco doesn’t get it though…

  • Aww yeah! Field Map > dungeon roads that connect the world

Also, I just recalled this…didn’t a teaser image for Tales of the Tempest R got leaked a while ago? Which would mean Tales of Tempest is getting a Vita “R” version eventually.

  • Okay, screw it! If this game comes to the West, I’m gonna get a *hurl* a Vita! Yeah, I said it. Come Tales of Hearts R! Your original soul may have been ripped of you and you got filled by 3D graphics and more content and all, but I still want to play you! So may you come to Europe! — and America!

  • keithmaxx

Not bad… Looks like they didn’t make a half-assed port to the rival platform, which I think is a good thing.

If I want something for the 3DS in return, I want a new Tales entry altogether. Or maybe for the Wii U. Yeah, that sounds much more interesting!

    •  Well, it was better than nothing, at least for me and the rest of the Europeans who love and/or want Tales of the Abyss 3DS.

    • AuraGuyChris

And then Bandai Namco will release the updated re-release in the PlayStation 3 in a few months… Yeah, no. I find that pretty insulting.

    • Why not all the platforms? Doesn’t have to be Nintendo only.

      • puchinri

Have they ever made a Tales game multi-plat from the get-go? It’d be nice if they have and started to again, but I have never known them to do so.

  • Tianyu Wei

Every tales game that get ported to the Sony platforms are like super charged juiced up version compare to the original… Tales of vesperia PS3? Tales of Graces F? Tales of Innocences PSVita..?

    • LightZero

Symphonia PS2 not too much. You also forgot Destiny R

      • puchinri

Destiny started off on a Sony console though. Symphonia is the only outlier, I guess.

    • puchinri

Agreed. It’s kinda weird, kinda refreshing, kind of very disappointing.

  • Byron Brauner

Was hoping for 2D sprites myself.  Hi-res 2d (if originally 2D) almost always trumps 3D for me.

  • Zero Shift

Please for the love of all things good bring this and Tales of Innocence R to the US Bandai Namco! Love the Tales series to death, but it saddens me to see Japan exclusive Tales games. I was really hoping for Xillia to get ported and it did, so hopefully these two will as well.

  • Akarnage

Not to be a jerk, but this game looks VERY subpar. It isn’t anything a PSP can’t move. Same thing was going on with Innocence R.

I’d rather not see this in the West and Namdai focusing their localization efforts on the mothership titles.
