Marvelous AQL On Releasing Half-Minute Hero 2 On PC

By Ishaan . November 24, 2012 . 11:30am

A while ago, Marvelous AQL asked fans via Twitter whether they’d like to see Half-Minute Hero 2 released on Steam. Unlike the first Half-Minute Hero games, released first on PSP and then via Steam for PC, Half-Minute Hero 2 hasn’t been released in the west in any form yet.

We asked MAQL producer, Esteban Salazar, to give us a little more insight regarding the voting drive Marvelous conducted, and what it meant for the possibilities of Half-Minute Hero 2’s western release.

“We’re just trying to gauge interest at this point,” Salazar shared with us. “It’s considerably more expensive to put out the sequel and we need to sell a lot more of the first game on PC to begin to justify it.”

“The best thing fans can do to help along the sequel is encourage their friends to buy the Steam version (or buy it for them!)—something that will be a little more appealing during the holidays *hint*.”

I’m really happy with Esteban’s support on the Steam Discussion area and on Twitter.
It is also interesting to note that Valve/Steam botched the release of HMH, like they do all too often, sadly, and the game wasn’t up for purchase until much later than planned.

Instead of putting people off, they tweeted about the issue, kept people informed and offered alternative ways of purchasing the game, and redeeming the key on Steam, for immidiate download & playing. Especially Europeans could benefit from better exchange rates using the alternative offered.

Really great news. I’m definitely buying it as soon as it comes out.

Even though this game is better played on a portable device, I would accept anything at this point

      I prefer the PC, myself.

But I think that if things like this are a sign of anything, it is that the PSP is truly unpopular in the West right now and not a very viable option.

Between this, the Ys games, ClaDun x2, and possibly Trails in the Sky Chapter two(or as it is more commonly called, Second Chapter/SC), it sounds as

This makes me happy personally because I think it shows that PC gamers aren’t all about graphics and may make folks less scared of the platform as being only for graphically demanding games. And that the PC isn’t only a viable alternative for Japanese developers/publishers/localizers developing graphically demanding games for current gen consoles(Dark Souls, The Last Remnant), but also portable game titles that never took off like they should have.

The PC seems to be breathing a lot of life into titles publishers no longer see as viable on the PSP or even Vita. And for that, I am thankful. Not only as a PC gamer who wants more Japanese games on the PC. But as a fan of these franchises who does not want to see them fade away, never to get a localization.

Hope that they will consider that the interest is high enough to bring profit for the company there.^_^

While i would love to get this game in English, i would also not want to see company damaging themselves by bringing game here but sells miniscule.

I hope if the HMH2 ends up on Steam I hope they bring the version on PSP too. Seeing as it would have already been localized it does not seem like it would cost a lot to bring it out. This way people can play it on the PSP or Vita too. I myself would prefer to play it on the Vita over the PC.

    • Colonel Custard

I feel the same way since the stages are short its perfect for just sitting around anywhere and playing on psp/vita.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Sadly i can’t see it happening even though i would love to get the game on PSP or VITA. The first one sells so badly that they actually cancelled the second one from coming here.

If the Steam ones is able to do great, maybe we can see the second one coming here on Steam.^_^

get grand knight history on steam then we can talk further after half min hero.

    • elppakcuf

except that they have nothing to do with it..

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Don’t you guys get tired of keep repeating things that had no relation to Marvelous here?

      Ask Vannilaware for GKH.

  • kupomogli

I really liked Half Minute Hero.  With the second one allowing you to create your own stages, and considering how many fans of the genre are sure to replicate classics like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, etc, etc, it’s almost limitless amounts of awesome.

    • DesmaX

Combine that with Steam Workshop and you have eternal awesomeness

I know I’m kind of a pessimist about these sorts of things, but I just can’t see this going well.

From the look and sound of it, Marvelous really WANTS to localize the game, but the money/potential playerbase just isn’t there. As fun as the game was for those of us who played it, I don’t think there aren’t enough of us to make HMH2′s localization worthwhile for the company.

This is why I respect Esteban above the sea of producers out there now. He just tells it like it is, laying down the law, and has fun with it.
