Final Fantasy XIII-2, Dark Souls, And Persona 4: Golden Win PlayStation Awards

By Spencer . December 3, 2012 . 12:30pm

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan holds their own awards ceremony for the best selling and fan favorite PlayStation games every year.

The Gold Prize goes to games that ship at least 500,000 units in Japan. Usually, Sony has a Platinum Prize for games that reach one million units and for Monster Hunter we’ve seen the Double Platinum Prize. However, for the 2012 awards the highest sales award was the Gold Prize. What’s more interesting are the user choice awards for games developed in Japan and overseas titles.

  • Leon_Tekashi

Yay for all of them, especially Persona 4 Golden.

    • Josh Strange

  • Magus KilIer

I hope this means we’ll get a sequel to Castlevania Harmony of Despair, that game was goddamn awesome

    • Gestriden

Honestly that game needed some work, its an awesome castlevania for sure, but the whole map of it could have used some work. Especially the bosses. Overall though the game is bloody awesome.

    • Elvick

Balancing is terrible. May as well be called “Harmony of Soma”.

Fun, but definitely should have had more effort put into balancing after it came out.

Not sure if they altered any of that for the PS3 version though. I have it on 360, and no longer play since it’s boring alone and I won’t pay for Live anymore. /digress

  • ragingmerifes

One more reason to bring Ys: Celceta no Jukai over, Xseed.

  • Lightthrower

Happy that Journey won 2 awards :-D

  • Hoshi星

Ys Celceta and Diva f won some awards! These are my most played game on Vita as well :D

  • Man, they need to find a way to stop awarding FFXIII. Otherwise the director and SquareEnix are going to keep thinking it is as good as past entries.

    • Luna Kazemaru

      Lol this comment

    • Wait what

It’s not as good as past entries. It’s better.

      • Budgiecat

W-wait what?? *falls down a flight of stairs*

        • SerendipityX

(I love your avatar lol) I’ll have to agree with @twitter-65735291:disqus simply b/c the previous FFs weren’t as remarkable and epic as fans make them out to be.

      • I really liked XIII-2 as well, but it is nowhere even near any PS2 or PSOne FF. I’ve also played Type-0 in its entirety and believe me: Until Type-0 comes over we will be missing on the greatest FF in the past decade. Type-0 also showed me that there is still true greatness in Square, it’s just that it is buried deep down with geniuses like Tabata, when he should be the one actually in charge of the main series.

    • PeterPanPiss

It won the User choice award as well. Sounds like you are in the minority, buddy.

      • Elvick

        Not really.

This doesn’t reflect those who don’t like it. Just those who felt compelled to vote. Not even those who were ‘eh’ about the game and didn’t feel like it deserved a vote from them.

I mean, there’s no “Anti-FFXIII-2” option to vote for. You either vote for the game or don’t. So all this reflects is those who did vote for it. Not the opinions of those who didn’t.

I suppose you could say they would vote for something else, but what would send the “FFXIII-2 sucked” message? Nothing.

For all we know, there are equal amounts of people who voted for it, with those who hate it, with those who were eh about it.

        • OathkeeperSoraXIII

if people felt ‘eh’ about it then you just don’t vote and if you really didn’t like it then you would vote for something else since you’re boosting said games vote over the 1 you don’t like.

i’m not entirely sure what you’re getting at in your arguement. since this is a ‘awards’ event.

‘I suppose you could say they would vote for something else, but what would send the “FFXIII-2 sucked” message? Nothing.’

even if people who didn’t like it voted for something else, the game still won the user’s choice award. meaning there’s more people that liked it than disliked it otherwise they wouldn’t of voted. MEANING exactly what the other guys said. the people that didn’t like it are indeed the minority. there’s no round about way to it.

          • Luna Kazemaru

Dude just stop trying they will keep trying to spin the argument to make it seem like its a fact.

          • Elvick

That is not true at all.

Only people that loved the game, or liked it enough to vote for it, voted on it.

Everyone else would not have voted. They are NOT represented AT ALL in these stats. Because this isn’t a poll of “Is FFXIII-2 good? Yes/No”

It’s just a vote for a game you like.

You can’t say the people who didn’t vote for it are a minority just because FFXIII-2 won a reward. That’s the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard.

Unless you can prove to me now that the votes that FFXIII-2 got are the majority of people in the entire country polled, then you have an argument.

You can’t. Therefore the statement that more people like it than not, is bullshit based on fanboyism. Not fact.

You don’t know numbers. You just know, in comparison to some other games that people voted for, FFXIII-2 got enough to win (along with other games). That’s all we know.

            You’re being ignorant.

          • Firekitty

You’re really desperate to prove that XIII-2 sucked, aren’t you? Maybe you care a little too much about a game you didn’t like? Why not try focusing your energies on something you DO like…it’s better for your bloodpressure, I assure you.

I don’t like God of War or GTA or whatever, but I don’t troll forums and comments sections to put those games down, or try to deny the fact that many people disagree with me when they get voted ‘game of the year’ or whatever…Because the fact is, enough people disagree with you and voted for the game for it to stand out. Demanding that we prove that the entire population of Japan voted in the poll is ludicrous, because that’s assuming that the entire population games rather than a minority…However, what isn’t ludicrous is the fact that, guess what, A LOT OF GAMERS LIKED FFXIII-2.

You seem to be trying to assert that everyone who voted in the poll did so only because they liked FFXIII-2 and wanted to defraud others into thinking it’s a good game…which is, well, crazy, but also very stupid. Look at this ‘game of the year’ voting site for an example:
There are many games in the various brackets (including FFXIII-2), and it’s structured in such a way that you vote for ONE game per bracket…so it’s not really sensible to attempt to claim that people stuffed the ballot for one game or whatever you’re trying to say here, because it’s not that sort of poll.

I’d wager that anyone who was A GAMER who knew about this poll would take the time to go take it.

    • ALfromHELLSING

XIII-2 is a great RPG and great FINAL FANTASY too. They fixed all the mistakes. It was my first PS3 game where I actually spent time to get Platinum Trophy. And I disliked XIII a lot. I’m really curious about Lightning Returns.

      • LightZero

While FFXIII was decent, I definitely prefer the sequel. It’s one of the few PS3 games I felt like replaying once I beaten it.

  • Wow. Borderlands 2 didn’t sell even 500,000 copies in Japan? Considering the overall sales of that game, and the fact that no one plays on Xbox 360 in Japan, I find this piece of knowledge to be baffling.

    • Budgiecat

      Is that sarcasm?

      • Nope, I’m serious. Sure, FPS don’t sell as much in Japan as they sell in the West but Borderlands in technically also an RPG and has a unique art style. To me it seemed like it could have been a hit over there, but obviously it wasn’t.

  • Sakurazaki

    Yay Dark Souls.

You gem of a game, you.

  • negineBIT

Who said PDf was a failure? Good job, SEGA.

  • Yay for Gravity Rush and Project Diva f! =^_^=

  • KyoyaHibari

That is a very wide spectrum of games from amazing to weak, really surprising.

  • Himiko

    Congrats to all!

  • Richard N

Yay Ys, good to see it actually getting some recognition.

  • LightZero

So much for FFXIII-2 being bad according to haters. I’m glad it’s liked over there.

    • Vocal minority at its finest. Tht all ;D

  • Lazulis

Gravity Rush & Journey are getting the love, yay! Haha, as expected of P4G…as expected

  • Renaldi Saputra

    wow persona 4 golden!!

  • Lol Teddie is breaking the 4th wall again :P

Yay SDR2 won an award!! But I noticed there no love for Danganronpa series over here? • Göran Isacson

Nay brother, you are not alone. We few, we happy few, shall continue to be loud and proud in our Super High School Level support of this series.

  • eilegz

nice to see resident evil 6 and Final Fantasy XIII-2, The popularity of gundam extreme vs hopefully translate in bringing the game or its sequel to western gamers… Surprised i didnt see musou orochi 2 (warriors orochi 3) but instead that one piece =/ Hopefully they do another gundam musou

  • Göran Isacson

Seeing Gravity Rush receive love is heartwarming enough, but DanganRonpa too? That’s the kind of thing that could make even the grinchiest of doomsayers grow bigger hearts.

  • Jesse Thompson

Final Fantasy is dead to me, long live Persona!
