Street Fighter X Mega Man Announced As A Free Download

By Ishaan . December 8, 2012 . 12:37pm

Capcom have announced Street Fighter X Mega Man, a free download title for PC, which will be made available on Capcom-Unity, as part of Mega Man’s 25th anniversary celebration. Check out a trailer for it below:

The 8-bit game features Mega Man as the protagonist, with retro-ized versions of Street Fighter characters serving as the eight Robot Masters. Just like regular Mega Man games, you’ll be able to beat them to acquire their powers.

Interestingly, Street Fighter X Mega Man is a collaboration between Capcom and fans. A Singaporean fan named Seow Zong Hui approached Capcom USA VP, Christian Svensson, with a prototype of Street Fighter X Mega Man at the EVO 2012 fighting game tournament, and then the game went into official development.

Street Fighter X Mega Man will be released on December 17th as a free PC download. The game’s music is composed by A_Rival, a hip-hop/electronic rapper and producer who himself adores videogames.

  • Ok, that is just plain rad.

  • Muffum

…Okay, no, not really, but this is a good start.

  • neetloaf

I admit, this is pretty cool.

Now let’s hope we can make it to the 17th before this game gets cancelled.

    • Dyne

i think if you take all the mega man games (rpg ones and that) we way past that.

      • samael789

Your comment doesn’t make any sense. Way past what?

        • almostautumn

That capcom isn’t out to destroy megaman like everyone believes.

          • Jungo

The 17th is the release date, not referring to the number of Megaman games.

          • AkuLord3

            Yeah like Megaman X Over…yup

  • Elvick

Not enough. Especially when they don’t bother to go widescreen. 8bit can be done with a higher resolution people. I hate wasted space.

    • Yeah show those devs making a free game who’s boss

      • Elvick

It’s fan made. That’s why it’s on PC.

Yeah, show that company that piggy backs on fan made projects to feign interest, in a series that treat like shit, love. That’ll certainly get the series the love it deserves from that company. *sarcasm*

Capcom gets no credit for this for me. All they get is a pat on the back for not killing a fanmade project. That’s it. The only game they’re working on with MM is Xover, and no thank you.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

lol wow this is pretty damn cool

  • capcom ? megaman ? pc ? FREE ? something is wrong here lol

  • riceisnice

Free? There has to be a catch.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Guys, wake up, it’s a fan-made game that Capcom took(With the guy’s blessing, probably because he knew if he said no then Capcom would just shut it down..), finished it up(probably in under a week), and then said they’d release it for free so all of you would just get on your knees.

And it looks like it’s working…sigh.

    • I think you should learn to read. He went to Capcom. They didn’t even know the game existed. Also, I haven’t seen Capcom shut down any of the other Mega Man fan-made games, so I don’t see why they would have shut this one down either.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

Point is that CAPCOM is trying to look good by announcing a FAN game they didnt make as an anniversary gift. Whatever it looks fun regardless.

        • Then why would they publicly announce that it was made by a fan who approached them with it?

          • OverlordZetta

            Because people are stupid.
They’ll see “FREE” and “MEGA MAN” and drop it there. Look at some of these comments.

          • Or they’re just being open about where it came from instead of taking unfair credit.

Skepticism about Capcom, I get, but insulting other people that are being excited about it too? Not very nice; especially after Capcom deliberately made sure the part about it being a fan project wasn’t left out (i.e: so that people can read it with their own eyes).

          • Godman

At this point I feel that you guys are just finding excuses to hate on Capcom. Seriously

        • Ty Austin

Would you rather they not and thus nobody hears about it?

Or how about this, they don’t support it and it never gets released.

    • Muffum

“finished it up (probably in under a week)”
If that’s the case, they took a long-ass time to announce it, since the creator approached them about it at EVO…

    • PABLO Rapetti Perez

I understand the Capcom hate more than anyone. But when something good does happen, why complain about it? why seek the bad in it? It is a free game and hopefully they are testing waters with it to see if a full fledged Megaman is viable. The Blue Bomber isn’t dead, we should be glad. I know I am!

    • Ty Austin

Capcom’s VP said, and I quote:

“I don’t want to downplay in any way, Zong Hui’s contribution. He was the creative visionary behind the game’s concept and execution. He was amazingly responsive all through the development process to our feedback, often turning builds into us every couple of days for more feedback. The iterative process was among the best I’ve seen.”

So either this game never gets the publicity it deserves, or Capcom is labeled for stealing ideas and taking credit. Either way they lose.

Why can’t people just be happy that something a fan created received so much support from it’s own company?

      • raymk

        Pretty much.

  • John_Polson_IGB

woohoo! I am also hopeful for a Mega man X Street Fighter 2D fighter! How awesome would that be?! :)

  • Astrotrain

After canceling Meaman legends 3 and Megaman Universe, this is hke least the can do.

  • omeganeko

    Wow this looks mega :)

  • ragingmerifes

    Free. By Capcom.
I never thought this day would come.

    • Free, by fans that approached Sven from Capcom Unity so that this game didn’t get a C&D.

That’s a bit better of a definition, honestly. This isn’t really Capcom’s effort more than it is fans.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Reminds me of this, but I’m pretty sure the uploader isn’t going to make a 8-bit MvC game (though he has made plenty of others)

  • Ooh Bee

I’m not trying to nitpick or anything but they couldn’t call it Mega Man X Street Fighter instead of SF X MM? Just saying.

    • raymk

Street fighter is a bigger name than megaman but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

  • Brandonmkii

The more classic MM games, the better. I’d even pay for this.

  • almostautumn

Wow; my POS laptop might actually be able to do this.

I’m going to tell everyone I’m a hardcore PC gamer now. Friggin’ nubs and their consoles; pshaw!

  • PABLO Rapetti Perez

The Blue Bomber isn’t dead… ohhhhhh the happiness :)

  • 8 Street Fighters having RM-ish roles. What if a 9th one is a secret opponent?

  • cant wait for the dlc “true ending” and protoman side story.
i shall also buy the street fighter x megaman ae,with 12 new bosses!

  • Raze

    Well It’s free…
    I’ll take it…

  • Okay I”d play this.

  • Mnstrzero00

I’m actually hoping that my pc has the specs to run this.

  • サレム

I wonder if there’ll be a Dan mode for extra difficulty.

  • OverlordZetta

So not only is someone’s game being adapted and touted as part of the anniversary (in other words, they really had no plans for it), but it MUST have Street Fighter as well?
Don’t get me wrong, this looks awesome, but no console version and the lack of any real Mega Man news is still disappointing to me.

    • Muffum

I’m not quite sure I understand your complaint about Street Fighter being in there. I might just be misinterpreting your comment, but you make it sound as if Capcom mandated that Street Fighter be in there. The creator approached Capcom about his game, and it just so happened that his game was a crossover of Mega Man and Street Fighter.

      • OverlordZetta

No, I understand that much – it just seems like it’s insulting that, thus far, the only Mega Man game we’ve gotten that we can actually play HAS to have Street Fighter thrown in too.
I realize WHY Street Fighter is there, but I mean it more as a statement to Capcom. It’s honestly a great idea and, frankly, an idea that might be fun to use with other franchises, but I still think we could use something wholly Mega Man for this.

  • Is this epic, or is this epic? Amazing, seriously. I’m so hyped for this and I’m not even a Megaman fanatic!

  • Yuriangels

will, it will have to do, for now.

  • MrJechgo

I saw Ryu, Chun-Li, Blanka, Dhalsim, Rose, Rolento and Urien, any idea on the last one?

  • Godman

Alright guys keep the support coming, the more Capcom feels the demand the better the chance they will continue working on new Mega Man games

  • Kaihedgie

And there are STILL people whining :U

  • SoulEater98

So now Capcom is taking a fan-made game made 3 years ago and making it their own as a 25th anniversary celebration:

    Nice job Capcom….

    • Nowhere did they claim it as “their own”, seeing as they openly said it was a fan game. If anything, I’d consider this “official endorsement” – on top of the official development they’re providing.

I wish people would try to be a little more reasonable before jumping to conclusions…

  • M’iau M’iaut

Well folks please remember this if you’ve got problems with this.

It ain’t Wily’s fault. It never is.

  • Nitraion

Free always welcome I want to try this..
    New power seems interesting..
But i won’t be surprised if there is DMC:fans made series version :V

  • Ben Sylvia

Of course they have to weasel Street Fighter into Mega Man’s 25th Anniversary.

    • Brion Valkerion

You know SF 25th ends the day this comes out right… thats why even though they both came out the same year, the Mega Man 25th stuff is not starting til now… Mega Man started Dec. 17th >.>

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It is nice that Capcom actually accepted fans games for their anniversary of Blue Bomber.^_^
And seeing that this game is even free, why the hate? At least this one is better than having nothing and then complained that Capcom care nothing about the series.

  • British_Otaku

Not nearly enough considering the years of backlash earned by Capcom whether you look at their fighters (content) or Megaman works (cancellations).

Still a nice work to cap off the year, I’ll have a go, perhaps we will be able to say Megaman had a respectable game for the anniversary. Even if it is a fan game with a bit of a Capcom push.

  • Kaihedgie

Things are just as bad as I thought they’d get on YouTube. Apparently you’re not even qualified to be a fan or allowed to support this game simply on the premise that Capcom endorsed it.

    • s07195

Took a look at what you were talking about, and… OH MY.

  • Vadim Merzhey

Capcom. WTH. Why the hell are they making THIS, instead of some normal game. It’s 25TH goddamn aniversary, they’re supposed to ,make something really cool, not just some SF crossover… Speaking of a devil…

    • z_merquise

This is a fan-made game and not by Capcom.

And Capcom, instead of acting like a bunch of dicktits who would either ignore the fans’ proposal or shut it down to “protect their copyright”, approved and supported the project.

And it’s free. And way better than that XOver game or whatever it is.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Sometimes i find it confusing here. Don’t you guys even read the news before posting here? As it written there that this game is fanmade ones.
It seems it is really fun to go all hating Capcom is it?

    • Much better than anything you can do, that’s for sure.

      Plus, it’s free!

    • Brion Valkerion

Mega man 25th does not start til Dec.17th thats the day Mega Man first dropped. If you were a real true megaman fan you would know that. But of course your not and just another I hate capcom because the internet says I should guy.

  • AkuLord3

Cool but the idea feels like some mod or game fans would make, doubt it was much to make it. Don’t get me wrong its still cool

    • Kaihedgie

      It’s not actually a mod

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It is fanmade game plus a bit of support from Capcom here.T_T

  • FFmax

    Free? Why so generous Capcom?

  • WingsOfEternity

I checked the date to see if it was April Fools

  • Go2hell66

Ryu just threw all of his honour out the window

    or should i say… off a building

    • OatMatadoQuatro

Ryu was already going to appear in the cancelled MegaMan Universe

  • Oni123

I think i might give this a try, never played mega man before, it’s free .. why not =)

  • OatMatadoQuatro

No Guile? I mean, MegaMan with Sonic Boom+Flash Kick would kick ass

  • Mister_Nep

I always welcome a new Megaman. I’ve played every platformer Megaman, and have beaten almost all of them. So this will be a welcome addition to my Megaman experience.

Kinda wonder if Megaman’s weapon from Chun-li is her thunder thighs.

  • Sergio Briceño

This isn’t exactly what I was hoping for when they told us to expect more from Megaman for the anniversary. BUT IS SO MUCH BETTER!

  • Yes, YES!
    This is awesome!
Rose, Im coming to challenge you!
    … on 17th! :D

  • Chris Lane

I know its obviously a ploy by capcom to make megaman fans stop complaining to them, but its clearly a beautifully made fan game and its free. You can know Capcom is still sleazy without hating on this game. The people wanted Megaman and these people made it happen, everyone should be proud!

    • Although it makes me wonder. If this fan made game was not ever conceived, did Capcom had any actual plans for the Blue Bomber’s anniversary on their own?

  • Did hell freeze over? Is Capcom not asking for money? Seriously.

  • Morricane

I like it. As long as it’s Nintendo-hard. :)…and really no idea how people can rage at a free game.

  • Göran Isacson

Man I am severely dissapointed. All these people being mad and NOBODY complains about the important stuff?

Doctor Light didn’t figure out how to synthesize the effects of Ki attacks until Megaman X, when he bestowed X with the Hadoken and Shoryuken in MMX and MMX2! This game is a blatant violation of the glorious Established Canon and an obvious example of Capcom not caring one bit for the consumer! Take to the streets I say, tonight we dine ON THE HEARTS OF THE UNBELIEVERS AND HERETICS!

I kid. I wouldn’t go that far yet. Seriously though, this is pretty cool! I thought the game was going to feature the eight classic Street Fighters from SF2 though, so consider my surprise when Rolento and Rose start showing up. I guess he went at it from a “what would make for interesting weapons” angle rather than the “pure series fanservice” angle though. Still, this will be a neat little download when it gets out!

  • Ferofax

    Awesome Blanka is awesome!

  • drexxia

wow, my fav franchises! and they come out on my birthday, can it be more ridiculously awesome??

  • CirnoLakes

    That’s… really cool.

It doesn’t make up for everything Capcom has done to Mega Man recently. But it’s a start.

  • Advol

I came as soon as i heard the news!
