Dark Souls II Won’t Be A PS3 Exclusive In Japan

By Spencer . December 10, 2012 . 2:38am

FromSoftware announced Dark Souls II for Japan. Like Dark Souls, Namco Bandai will handle the Western market as the game’s publisher, but FromSoftware will retain publishing rights for Japan.

In Japan, Dark Souls was only released for PS3 in even though an Xbox 360 version was released overseas by Namco Bandai. Dark Souls II will be a multiplatform title in Japan with PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions announced for the region.

It interesting to note since Konami Japan decided not to release Xbox 360 versions of multiplatform titles like Silent Hill: Downpour and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

  • No love for WiiU.

    • andref

Probably because its a new system so it wouldn’t have a large enough install base to launch the game for the system

      • ronin4life

While that is valid(they must have been making it for awhile now) it is coming to 360…
        /devils advocate

I would love to see it on wiiu… may hold off on getting it to see if a wiiu version is possible(I reckon it is less likely than the pc port of DS 1 though…)

    • malek86

My guess is they are using the same engine as DS1 (that’s why there is a PC version at launch this time) and don’t wanna have to port it to the Wii U.

      • Aero

Nope. Both Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls use variants of Sony’s PhyreEngine. (yes, Sony allowed From to use it on the Xbox)

FromSoftware is currently developing an in-house game engine from SCRATCH for DaS2. I’ll bet they’ll use it for future Armored Core releases as well!

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Seriously, people. Can we have an article on this site without someone requesting Wii U versions of every single game in existence?

      • Hemppa

Now it’s much closer to no single game in existence, so it’s sorta warranted.

      • Suicunesol

I don’t see what’s wrong with that. People do it with the Playstation Vita all the time. :)

        • Kefkiroth

Platform-begging is banned here IIRC, as it just causes problems…

    • Bloodios

More systems to work on means less time for optimization, which also means that the final product is going to be compromised as heck, so please, no.

  • badmoogle

It will sell 5 copies on 360. :p

    • uchihalordxX

      what do u mean ?

      • Rishtopher

The Xbox doesn’t sell well in Japan. Sales are so poor that many games don’t have an Xbox port, or they get cancelled.

I find it surprising that they’re making a 360 version, but I’m happy to hear that they’re doing PC as well as PS3.

Now I just need to get around to finishing the first game…

        • Derek E Nay

The sales of the 360 may be poor, but remember its been out for a long time. I would not be surprised if there is a lot of gamers in japan who have a 360.

          • heartless141

but also remember thy dark souls is essentially an online game. And Xbox gold is a massive barrier even for people who already owned a console.
I have a few friends who own xboxes here. But they don’t even play games much. Bought the thing on a whim for a single game. Li

        • Aero

Dude, you need to get around to playing DEMON’S Souls!

  • CirnoLakes

    PC is announced?

    Oh I am happy.

Wait, why I am happy? I play jRPGs to not feel lonely… and that is exactly the emotion that Dark Souls tries to evoke. So why am I… oh wait. PC.

Actually, I don’t think it much counts as a jRPGs at all. It’s more of a free roam 3D Super Ghosts and Ghouls. Bandai Namco, thank you for giving my PC games.

    • Göran Isacson

Good lord a free roaming 3D Ghost and Ghouls. That just NAILS what this series is all about, in my mind. Eternal gratitude for formulating it in such a snappy way.

  • guess sony regret their decision to not having secured exclusivity rights of the ip. maybe this time the pc version will be better optimized as it’s not a port anymore.

    • sandra10

No, they have the rights to the Demon’s Souls IP which is Dark Souls wasn’t called Demon’s Souls 2. They definitely regret not publishing Demon’s Souls in the West and funding a sequel, though.

      • Thanks, that was s the big deal. Been a while so it slipped my mind. Could’ve been another stellar exclusive, now it’s a stellar 3rd party game ^^

        • Elvick

Demon’s Souls is still a stellar exclusive.

    • Cloud_ST

lol poor sony, every time news about Dark Souls come out people keep talking about their screwup.

  • doubletaco

Hopefully since a PC version was announced right off the bat the port of it won’t be so lackluster this time.

Either that or I hope there will be a DS2Fix to make things better again, released 23 minutes after the game comes out.

    • Hraesvelgr

Presumably, since it’s being released on PC from the get-go, it won’t just be a lazy port this time.

  • uchihalordxX

  • Godman

Finally got to see the video instant goosebumps especially with that soundtrack.
I got the same feeling when I first saw the Skyrim Trailer.

Instant Pre-Order X) So lets see those bonuses!

  • Barrit

No “Prepare to die” or anything :( I know games evolve and change, but as long as it doesn’t go all easy mode, I’m good.

  • ragingmerifes

I hope they make it hard for RPG players, though. Dark Souls was too much of “dodge, attack, block” for me. If I wanted this kind of gameplay in a challenging way, I would play King’s Field. When I get an RPG like this, I want great amounts of immersion and more tactical thinking.
I’ll probably buy this one, too, though.

  • ThatBlackGuy

I hope this time Namco has enough copies and doesn’t underestimate the preorders.

  • Catalin Baz

As long as they make it in English language for the PC, I can guarantee over 800 copies in my country alone.
