How Much Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Costs… If You Buy Everything

By Spencer . December 13, 2012 . 3:36pm

Square Enix just released Theatrhythm FInal Fantasy for iOS and it’s free. Yeah! Oh, but the iOS release only has two songs “One-Winged Angel” from Final Fantasy VII and “Zanarkand” from Final Fantasy X.

You can buy game specific song packs with four tunes for $2.99 a piece. Additional songs are $0.99 and characters are $1.99 a piece. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has additional content on iOS like music from Final Fantasy Tactics, the Crystal Chronicles series, and Celes from Final Fantasy VI as an add-on character.

Only the most die hard Final Fantasy fan would buy all of the DLC, but just for laughs, with all of that content added up, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy would cost:

13 bundles at $2.99 each = $38.87

+ 59 songs  at $0.99 each = $58.41

+ 25 characters at $1.99 each = $45.75

for a grand total of $143.03.

As a comparison, here’s how much buying everything for the Nintendo 3DS version costs. Characters are unlockable and some songs like “Antipyretic” from Final Fantasy Tactics are not available. The 3DS game also has event videos, which as of now aren’t in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for iOS.

Base game is $29.99 which includes 76 songs if you count prelude and ending themes. More specifically, you get 36 core songs, 12 unlockable tunes, 4 songs exclusive to the Chaos Shrine, and 24 opening/ending songs.

There are an additional 52 songs available as downloadable content in North America sold for $0.99 a piece. Japan, actually has 56 songs as DLC. since “We Have Arrived” from Final Fantasy Type-0 (“We Have Arrived” is available in the US.)

So, for Nintendo 3DS you would spend $81.47 and have 128 songs (counting preludes/ending themes) or 100 in challenge mode. The iOS version has 111 songs and Square Enix will probably add to that list at a later date.

Here’s a look at the new characters in the iOS version of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

    SE………………bah humbug!

  • EdgeKun

“Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has additional content on iOS like music from Final Fantasy Tactics, the Crystal Chronicles series, and Celes from Final Fantasy VI as an add-on character”

    ;____; But. . .but. . . why don’t we 3DS owners have the option of music from FF Tactics? ;_;

    EDIT –

    • Lunir Malheur

      And Crystal Chronicles!

    • Shane Guidaboni

Seriously. I want FF Tactics music. SE, you jerks!

    • I’d pay any cost for FFT music and Celes/Ramza characters.

  • Great way to finance the console releases by releasing on iOs. The install base is huge and they have lots of money to burn, best business decision SE could have ever made.

    • EdgeKun

Agreed. I know a hell of a lot of people who would love Theaterhythm but simply lacked the 3DS to play it.

On that note, I just hope they bring the iOS DLC over to 3DS. There looks to be an awful lot of tasty things there. . .

  • Buying all the add-ons for iOS: $143.03.

Buying the game and all of the DLC songs currently available for NA 3DS: $81.47.

Seeing the joy on their faces for forking out for both because they’re the biggest FF fan? Priceless. For everything else, there’s Mastercard.

  • Victor Hunter

Wow. This is a really great comparison. And I really appreciate that there wasn’t any sort of spin put on it either. Just the straight up facts.

Both versions are really different beasts and there’s no real way to directly compare them. If it ran better on the iphone 4 I can tell you right now that I would be all over some of those new songs. Sound of the Wind is one of the best FF themes. Plus, some of those new characters are really tempting. As it stands though, I think the 3DS version is the one I’m gonna keep giving the most love to. Here’s hoping that they bring some of these new songs out for it.

  • Lunir Malheur

    What happened to Square-Enix? u_u

    • K Mantle

Capitalism happened, you american pigs. In the mother land…

(GF over the shoulder) Wait! Aren’t you mexican? That country is capitalist, and the company is japanese, not american…

      (Me) Shhh!

      That actually just happened

  • KingGunblader

See, now THIS is what irritates me about this port. Exclusive songs and characters. Can we at least get ’em for the 3DS, PLEASE?

  • Carlos Daniel Flores Loreto

We Have Arrived is actually available in the American Store. I have it… Unless its available in Mexico and not in USA.

    • Ah you’re right about “We Have Arrived” thanks for the correction. I missed that when I was looking at the US list since its under Final Fantasy series. There are four more songs that only Japan has though.

  • Haseyo

Wow this is really a kick in the nuts for the 3DS version. so many more characters and songs.

    • Kevin Tan

You lose EMS songs in exchange for a few songs and characters and you pay more. The ideal way is to have the 3DS versions and cherrypick the few things not in the 3DS version in the iOS version. Not to mention, no unlocking stuff in the iOS version. :(

      • leeorv

        NOT TRUE!

you have 3 alternate scores to unlock PER SONG (even the DLC ones), as well as a collection of cards that form a gallery of sorts, and harder quest modes (quest mode is the new main mode of the game, you get to play chains of 5, 10, 20 or an endless amount of “quests” in succession, each quest contains an FMS and a BMS, played with the same set of characters, and you get graded at the end of the chain for how well you did, there’s also a single HP bar for the duration of the quest, making the harder quests more risky)

  • Ridiculous. Just because you blew all your money on that awful movie and had to merge with Square Enix (and make the Dragon Quest series an embarrassment to play with those awful puns despite the ports here by extension) doesn’t give you the right to extort us!

    • Ty Arnold

      This post is complete nonsense.

The puns and alliterations are the best thing about modern Dragon Quest.

  • Canceris

On the other article ive read said that SE told to look out for compositions from the developers. What do you think of that people? Maybe Nobuo is going to compose some little pieces? dunno

    That cast!
    Y U NO 3DS DLC?

But it’s just too expensive and for iOs… ugh!
Sorry SE, it’s awesome but I won’t buy an iOS device and all the shizz, a fan has certain limitations too!

  • Maia Kasoya

That is one huge-ass price for all the DLC combined… But, at least it’s not as ridiculous as, like, FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS.

    So sorry for that.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Oh come on there’s no way I’m gonna like this excu—– Celes is here!! Celes made it to this game!! YES!! YES!! …iOS…. *leaves to cry*

  • I have both games he 3DS version and iOS version now. I played the 3DS version extensively and bought a number of DLC for it as for iOS so far I only bought 1 song for it but while it looks more vibrant on iOS I prefer the 3DS version I do hope that we get more DLC for the 3DS version.

  • Misty Dawson

    l…. really wanted Celes…

    • Elvick

I want the whole FFVI cast, but that’s asking a bit much.

  • Martin Ezekiel Bran Jr.

Pfft this is nothing compared to the hundreds of dollars I’ve spent on jubeat plus/jukebeat and reflec beat plus.

    • Barrylocke89

      Wha? no Groove Coaster Zero?

      • RablaAndrews

Groove Coaster Zero gets ALL OF THE MONEY

      • Martin Ezekiel Bran Jr.

Groove coaster wasn’t my favorite. While fun, I just didn’t like the tracks as much. I’ve spent a good $250+ on jubeat/jukebeat and reflec beat combined.

        • Barrylocke89

I still haven’t tried reflecbeat yet. As for Jukebeat, it seems cool, but playing it on an iphone is REALLY cramping. The Ipad would be better since it’s closer to the size of the arcade cabinet, but I don’t own an Ipad with no plans of getting one.

Groove Coaster’s big advantage to me is that you can easily play it with only one or two fingers in the small space that’s given to you on the iphone/ipod touch.

          • Martin Ezekiel Bran Jr.

You should try out rhythm control 2, or djmax ray. Both great rhythm games for iPhone

  • MikeTxn

I wish they release a few Crystal Chronicles songs on the 3ds.
If I had an iPhone I’ll probably buy them.

Ramza is playable. Maybe Marche and Ritz will be playable in the future? (One can hope)

  • Barrylocke89

Looks expensive. I might try the free version out but I doubt I’ll give the DLC a sh-

    Wait, Locke’s a playable character??

    …ok, I might give Square 1.99, but that’s it, I swear!

    • komiko12

Locke has been playable in the 3DS version.

  • RablaAndrews

I do assume that the iOS library will continue to grow beyond what’s available now. Square won’t miss a chance to pump out XIV tracks for A Realm Reborn, for example.

  • Trotmeister

Bought Ramza and FFXI bundle so far. It’s kinda fun game, but man, this “everything is separate” system they came up with is ridiculous. I mean, not even bundles have all the songs. This is just plain evil.

    • neo_firenze

You and I sound like we have similar tastes – Ramza and the FFXI bundle is exactly what I’m going to grab on the iOS version :)

I kinda wish this iOS version had happened alongside the 3DS one (which I own with a lot of DLC), because I… kinda think I prefer playing this game on iPad.

I can live without those characters and few tracks. Not like I have time to look at the characters while playing on expert anyway. Also I might just pick up songs & characters that aren’t in 3DS version. It’s not that bad. Why buy all tracks again if I already have them. Tho for people who don’t have 3DS version this might be one expensive iOS game.

Also, I don’t think that too many people will be buying FFI-FFIII tracks. It’ll mostly be tracks from FFVIII-FFXIII.

  • XypherCode

Nothing is exclusive these days… :
The 3DS version is still better IMO coz of the 3D visuals and the stylus gameplay. They look so good on the XL.
I might try this out just for the new characters. :)

  • Tiramii

Wish they put Hope in the 3DS version, since I have that one. ;w; Ah well, still cute as ever.

  • Lester Paredes

See, and I just got admonished by a moderator for calling this out as a bad port. Any game where you have to buy game components separately in order to actually have a game, is a bad game. Crappy port. period.

  • ragingmerifes

But it’s worth paying 150 bucks to play as Ramza in a dancing game. Shaking da bones.

  • komiko12

Faris had a dye job in this port.

She had the Amano blonde hair in the 3DS version while the iOS version has her purple hair from the sprites in FFV.

Wish that her hair had a darker shade of purple.

  • Elvick

Surprised they tried the freemium approach, but it’s the better less obvious greedy way to charge premium for something.

I’d rather just pay for a full game, which I did for the 3DS version. I think at most I’d get anything not on the 3DS version. If that, but I did decide to check it out. I doubt it’ll run well though, since I see people having issues on iPhone 4.

  • Well if T:FF wasn’t a cashgrab before…it is now. Making you pay for Big Bridge is criminal.

  • Covnam

…well, uhm, at least the two free songs are good… Missing the event videos is a big deal though imo. Re-watching memorable scenes while playing was a really great aspect of the game.

  • At least you guys can get the Add-ons…
where I live (UAE) it says I can’t get any add-ons because of regional restrictions -_-

  • new_tradition

Ugh, I’m not anti-Apple per se, I just think they’re products are crazy expensive and I have no urge to buy them :/

    Really hope the 3DS version get’s these songs available soon, especially the characters. I want Faris ;A;
