Dark Souls II Will Not Have Paid Items, Keyword Is “Time” [Update]

By Spencer . December 18, 2012 . 6:20pm

Update: An earlier version of the article said Dark Souls II would have paid item storage, which was based on a report from the image board 2ch. Details from the Famitsu article provided by Game no Hanashi do not state this. Siliconera apologizes for the error.

The Famitsu interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki says that the trailer from the VGAs was not in-game footage and the world in Dark Souls II has a common elements with the previous game. It’s kind of like a different period or as Miyazaki says the previous game was like the Arctic and Dark Souls II is like Antarctica. The keyword for Dark Souls II is "time" and the game engine has been updated to look more realistic.

Paying for… item storage? I hope this isn’t true because I really liked Dark Souls infinite carry capacity.

  • Nitraion

    Oh GOD noo..
Dammit DLC scam everywhere that kinda killing the game fun if you can buy item and weapons…..

  • Godman

Well won’t this invoke more careful strategy. I do hope they find a way to allow you to sell junk, then I wouldn’t need to care for this

  • Tobias One

so…we can look forward to a dumbed down game and disc locked content hey?
Well done Bandai and FromSoftware, my enthusiasm for DSII rises with each passing day *rolls eyes*

    • Luna Kazemaru

Where did it say the game will be dumb down.

      • You dont have to be a genius to deduce that appealing to a broader audience usually means: “We make game dumb so every child can understand it.”

Bioware said the same thing for Dragon Age II and look where we are right now.

While the recent DaSII Trailer hyped me up a little, there is this bitter aftertaste that it is not going to be the same great experience like DeS and DaS.

        • Luna Kazemaru

games not even out and we are already going there with comments like this.Yeah ok

        • “You dont have to be a genius to deduce that appealing to a broader audience usually means: “We make game dumb so every child can understand it.””

It certainly takes some thoughtful perspective to know the distinction between “dumbing down” and “making accessible”. I can point to 7th Dragon 2020 sub-series as an example of a difficult formula like Etrian Odyssey being made accessible. Even Dark Souls contained some improvements that made it slightly less stressful than Demon’s Souls. “Easy” doesn’t inherently mean “unworthy”.

  • Raiiban

I imported Demon’s Souls at a big upcharge before it made it to America and loved it. I bought Dark Souls on PS3 and again on the PC because it was such a great game. This? It seems like I’ll be skipping it, I don’t like this direction at all.

Dark Souls II: Prepare to pay edition.

  • MrRobbyM

Um. Excuse me? Bottomless box was in Dark Souls don’t give me this bs. I haven’t even seen a single gameplay video and we’re already talking DLC? Paid DLC at that? Souls series isn’t that big of a name to be pulling this kind of garbage yet.

Edit: Okay. Let’s stay positive here. At least it’s not weapon/armor or boss fights/stages….?

Edit 2: Okay. False alarm people. But I’d like to point out that this had to be said “The Famitsu interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki says that the trailer from the VGAs was not in-game footage” lol. I’m so glad they cleared that up I was so confused.

If this is true then all those other reports regarding things like vehicles and morality won’t be so far fetched.

    Dear goodness no.

  • Guest

What a load of ass. Being a gamer is suffering.

  • neogeno

I’m starting to notice that more and more console games are slowly creeping closer and closer to certain free to play models. I’m not going to fuss about this until I can get more details.

  • DesmaX

They just need to announce DLC for leveling up now…

  • dr000d

Goddammit Siliconera. Making me all mad even though the article actually says THAT THEY WILL NOT SELL ITEM DLC.

    Integrity much?

    • cj_iwakura

      Integrity? Here?

      • Luna Kazemaru

oh I thought you said this place was to bad for you to post on?

      • You wouldn’t like it when someone else keeps bringing up something you said or did in the past as some sort of lifelong stigma, would you?

  • TiamatNM

I really hope this isn’t true

  • At least share the original report so people can call you out immediately if they have to. At this rate, the lead-up to Dark Souls 2 is going to be more painful than anything the game has to offer. I think I’ll shut my eyes and block my ears until it comes out, and just hope for the best.

  • Pockystix

While I think they’ll avoid things like this, it does really suck to hear about DLC being made before the game is even really done.

oh well, at least it’s not CAPCOM levels of insulting to my intelligence.

  • Nitraion

    Thank god its false news….

  • MrTyrant

It’s good to be wrong with this kind of news…

  • Oh god, I hope if other sites caught wind of this article they are also changing it. That’s a pretty bad black spot to have on a potentially amazing game that people are already freaking out over. Nobody is perfect, but maaan that is seriously misrepresenting the game in the most awful way.
