Nippon Ichi Is In The Guinness Book Of World Records, Thanks Partially To Disgaea

Nippon Ichi Software has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records and you might be able to guess why! No, it’s not for dealing the most damage dealt in one attack or for having the most peg-legged penguins on the screen. The award Nippon Ichi got is for being the company that released the most strategy RPGs.

Nippon Ichi Software opened in 1993 and started releasing strategy RPGs with La Pucelle: Tactics and continued with the popular Disgaea series. From 2003 to 2009, fourteen strategy RPGs were released netting the Gifu based company the award. You can add at least one more strategy RPG next year when Disgaea Dimension 2 comes out for PS3 in March.

  • Muffum

So… do they have records like this for every genre, or what?

    • Paradox me

They have records for every little thing these days, to the point where every person on Earth will eventually wind up in the Guinness Book of World Records for something.

      • Testsubject909

I stopped caring about Guinness world records a while back. At some point I sat down at a library and read parts of the more recent book and while there were a handful of truly amazing feat, there were tons and tons more of just ridiculous or overly mundane feat of “Does anyone really care?”

  • Andrew Austin

Huh, I would have thought Banpresto would have had them beat.

    • echokanon

How many SRPG did Nippon Ichi made excluding ports? I never checked but I thought it might be even less than the amount of Fire Emblem series, not to mention Super Robot Wars

      • Curan_Altea

Fire Emblem is 13 including remakes. Don’t know about Super Robot wars though.

        • Judo

Out of the top of my head, SRW alone has over 40 titles, excluding ports/remakes/compilations/non-SRPG titles.

Do note that Banpresto also has other “Non-SRW” SRPGs.

        • MrTyrant

From 2003 until 2009 Bampresto realesed few games. Sure there are like 40 srw but to some extent is one or two game less than NIS in that period of time.

I love both companies though and they should continue doing what they know to do..

      • MrTyrant

La pucelle, Disgaea, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Disgaea 2, Soul Nomad, Disgaea 3, Disgaea 4, Zettai hero. Also Im forgetting about Rapsody saga, they are like three games related but some are port.

        • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

They are, but the “Marl’s Kingdom” series were RPG games; 2 for PS1, 1 for PS2. And all we got was Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, which is originally Little Princess of Marl’s Kingdom). Too bad we never got the chance to see a sequel here, since it didn’t do well here. :/

    • ragingmerifes

Maybe it was about original franchises or localized games.

    • Kamion

I had the same thought. There are a lot more SRW games than NIS SRPGs. Maybe they only counted the 2000s?

  • Go2hell66

Why am i not suprised, the rate at which these guys churn out games always amazes me

  • Trotmeister

This can’t be right. Unless they count ports and re-releases as separate games.

    • Luna Kazemaru

‘The award Nippon Ichi got is for being the company that released the most strategy RPGs’

well duh…That and some of the other games

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

I guess congratz are in order? Well done, Nippon Ichi!

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

Congrats, NIS. Does every other publishers concern themselves ending up in Guinness Book of World Records?

  • Mister_Nep

And each strategy RPG they’ve released has been great. Hold this Guinness Record with pride Nippon Ichi.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

And yet, there are certain people who will act as though Nippon Ichi games don’t exist or should be ignored, because they’re not super high budget titles or are on systems they don’t like.

Congratulations, NIS. I know this won’t give you the legitimacy you deserve, in some people’s eyes, but do know I loves ya.

  • http://altsune.com/ Ovada Bey

    I love these people <3

  • MrTyrant

The fun thing is that in two or three year we have like four or five games of good quality and toooons of hours to play. Some of the few games that i enjoy griding my characters.

  • MrJechgo

How many games have they made? That would be good to know :)

  • Kamal

The record seems to have been removed, only one mentioned is for the highest experience level in a RPG.

  • Pythia Brixham

Hm… I thought the Nippon Ichi would get the “Company that makes people grind the most” record.

    • Testsubject909

The Elder Scrolls and a large variety of MMOs would be contending for that.

  • Fidelis

Sucked the most hours of life outta their fans seems more accurate.

Nippon Ichi is a vampire that sucks out our lives, and the worst part is that we like it

    • Testsubject909

So NIS is a better vampire then Edward?

      Eh, that seemed obvious.

But I digress, that gets old quick. I’m not too sure that the worst part is that we like it. I think that’s the best part.

      • Nemesis_Dawn

Has there ever been a vampire character that wasn’t a better vampire than Edward? I’d hardly even call him a vampire, since vampires are supposed to die in sunlight, not sparkle.

        • Syn

I say they are simply cutsie gargoyles, since they are made of crystal or whatever rock that is.

  • Crok425

I thought the game was only for Vita…

    • Nemesis_Dawn

What game are you talking about? The Disgaea sequel? When Disgaea 3 and 4 were PS3 titles?

  • http://twitter.com/DarrylThinks The Letter D

Phantom Brave is definitely a fun little distraction. I have the Special Edition, which my friend gave to me as a gift. :-3

  • icalintzyt

    Laharl saves the day again.

  • PoweredByHentai

What? No mention of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure nor of the Marl Kingdom series? Blasphemous!

There’s a reason why the Rosenqueen shop exists in Laharl’s castle. :D

  • Nicholas Gatewood

Quality > quantity and I’ve never enjoyed a Nippon Ichi game, no matter how hard I try. Maybe that’ll change this generation, maybe they’ll release a great Vita game that wins me over soon.

  • shion16
