Schwaang!! Here Are Some English Class of Heroes 2 Screenshots

By Spencer . December 28, 2012 . 2:30pm

"Don’t fret. Class of Heroes 2 is still coming," Gaijinworks president Victor Ireland tweeted. "We just slowed it down a bit to polish some bits and add a proper credits sequence." Import game distributor MonkeyPaw Games, Gaijinworks, and Acquire have been working on an English version of the Wizardry-like dungeon crawler.

Ireland noted they translated the battle text in Class of Heroes 2 into comic book-like "THWUUMPs" and showcased some of the skills for the Pop Idol class. Class of Heroes 2 will use the original Japanese names for the races so Class of Heroes 2 will be different from Class of Heroes, which was localized by Atlus.

Atlus (CoH) –> Gaijinworks (CoH2)

Erdgeist –> Gnome

Halfling –> Khulaz

Sprite –> Fairy

Felpier –> Felpur

Drake –> Bahamun

Humans are still humans! Class of Heroes 2 will be released for PSP on the PlayStation Store so Vita owners will be able to grab it too.

I was wondering what happened to this, good to see they’re still willing to give it a shot. We never got the first one, so hopefully it being digital means we won’t be waiting too long on a Euro release, Legend of Grimrock has gotten me on a dungeon crawler kick.

    • monkey

I imported 4,5,6. And 2 isnt really any better than 1………

If you want dungeon crawlers/classic jrpgs , wait for pmd 4, soul hacker, god and paradox all releasing next year

      • SirRichard

Thing is, of those only Soul Hackers has the traditional first-person style I’m looking for, and given Atlus’ relationship with European releases, that isn’t happening any time soon, to put it politely.

(Disqus seems to have eaten my first response?)

      • Phlo

Just curious, did any of the ones you imported show a notable improvement?

        • monkey

3 on the psp and ps3 was very very good
4 on the psp was a regular clasical rpg, and it was the best of the series/
and 5 on the 3ds is great

          • KiTA

I wouldn’t consider Shin Ken to Mahou to Gakuen Mono (what you’re calling “4”) to be a CoH game, myself. It’s actually a spinoff I think?

There was a real Class of Heroes 4, it was called “Ken to Mahou to Gakuen Mono (“Class of Heroes”) Final: Freshman Princess”. The recently released Class of Heroes 3D (your “5” I think?) is a port of it I believe.

For the record, I think they meant to use “Final” as in “Final Exam” not “Last Game,” but I’m not sure. The official blog has more info on it:

Also, apparently the Class of Heroes team is involved with NIS’s recent PSN release “Legasista” as well, somehow.

  • Lightthrower

Good that they changed the race names (except for Halfling). Elminage uses those names too. Also, I think i’ll like the comic book “sfx”.

    • Testsubject909

I kinda liked the name Erdgeist personally, but hey. I’m adaptable, these new names aren’t half bad.

      • Barrylocke89

I liked the name Erdgeist too. A quick (somewhat lazy) wiki search implies that “erdgeist” is essentially the same thing as a gnome (erd =”earth”, and geist = “spirit”). But I have an unfortunate tendency to associate “gnome” with the bearded statue that likes to go on trips with Travelocity.

Somewhat off topic, but now I see where the names of the elemental spirits came from in the Tales series (Gnome, Undine, and Sylph). The only name that’s off is Efreet (instead of Salamander). That’s a fire creature too, but from Arabic culture. I wonder why the team decided to change their spirit naming for just that one spirit.

    • KiTA

Technically they didn’t change them. They changed them back.

  • Zal_Yagun

    Any date for this?

    • KiTA

According to the NeoGAF thread that Vic Ireland has been posting in, mid February is best guess right now. Which puts it out in the same timeframe as EO4 and Soul Hackers.

  • SprintsMcGee

My body is ready for this game

  • PoweredByHentai

    No release date?

  • Joseph Steinhilpert

phew was worried it was axed like grand knight history

  • Crok425

I thought that Atlus was going to localize this… if that would’ve been the case I would’ve ranted about Eternal Punishment… anyway, I think I might get this game.

  • Ladius

It looks like an extremely polished localization, not that I would expect any less from Ireland and his crew.

Collectors and lovers of physical releases should know that Ireland is thinking about a pre-order only run of UMD copies, even if this has still to be officially confirmed.

    • xXDGFXx

Whelp, I will await confirmation because I want that physical release!

      • KiTA

Physical Release would be preorder only, though, and my understanding is that if it goes through, X number of people will need to preorder before it happens.

  • AzuNo17

Wasn’t this going to also be a localized PS3 release?

    • KiTA

There is a PS3 port as well — Class of Heroes 2G I think is the name. No word on if we’re getting that one.

However, since they share the same script, maybe even the same data files, if this does well it might just happen. The only changes I’m sure of is that they re-balanced a few of the race specific classes, especially in regards to what magic they get.

    • Barrylocke89

I think the PS3 release was only going to happen if the Kickstarter succeeded Since it failed, Gaijinworks seems to only be planning on doing the PSP digital release, and MAYBE a physical release that’s only available for pre-order.

  • Bob Stockalockapoulos

This looks so cool! Looks like a more polished Wizardry.

    • KiTA

      That’s because it is.

A very long history lesson’s cliff notes:

Several decades ago, the Wizardry devs gave permission for anyone in Japan to make a Wizardry game. So Japan did, mostly based on Wizardry 3-5, the more popular versions at the time. Sir-Tech then went out of business after a failed hostile takeover from EA (and lets be honest, they would have just shut them down a month later anyway).

Wizardry Xth Generation was a Wizardry game in Japan that had modern elements. I’ve heard it called “Wizardry meets Shin Megami Tensei” — post apocalyptic, very hard, very unforgiving. Wizardry Xth Generation 2: Unlimited Students had a school theme and a lot of elements we’d see in CoH1.

The team that made Wizardry Xth Generation split up after Xth2.

Part of this team became Team Masamune, who made the 3 “Generation Xth” games, the 2 “Labyrinth X-Blood” games, “Students of the Round Table,” and the upcoming “Demon Gaze.”

(They are actively seeking someone in the West to localize their games, and have ported them to 360 and PSP in order to, in part, attract someone like Monkeypaw / Gaijinworks / NISA / Atlus / XSeed / Arksys / UFO Interactive / etc to localize them.)

Another part of this team became Zer0Dev, the team that makes Class of Heroes. Class of Heroes 1 is a remake of Xth2 Unlimited Students with the serial numbers filed off.

Indeed, the Japanese wikis for CoH 1 and 2 have a lot of notes on elements that are holdouts form Wizardry Xth Generation 2 that don’t quite make any sense anymore, and Vic Ireland has commented that CoH2 literally has code from the original Xth2 in it still.

The timing is also right that part of the team likely went on to join Star*Fish, the team that makes the Elminage series of Wizardry style games. Elminage 1 came out about the same time as CoH1 in Japan.

      • Barrylocke89

That was pretty interesting, especially the bit about EA attempting to takeover Sir-Tech. I wonder what EA would have even done with those resources if they succeeded.

Anywho, you get your A for the day.

      • Bob Stockalockapoulos

Nifty stuff, man. Thanks for the history lesson! I can kinda see the family tree going on there.

  • Lionxie

Will this be physically on the PSP as well? I don’t want to get a Vita for this

    • Mister_Nep

There was a kickstarter for the game to get a physical release. That didn’t go through so no physical release.

      • Lionxie

Damnit..seriously? Thats ass man, thanks for the heads up. I was upset i wasn’t able to get this to begin with…

      • KiTA

Old information. They’re trying to see about getting a limited physical release for those who preorder through the official site. WIll depend on how many preorders they get.

    • amagidyne

Why would you need to get a Vita?

      • Lionxie

Could i access the PSN store on my PSP? Its not modded…if I can then i will consider downloading the game.

        • Testsubject909

You can access the PSN store from the PS3, PSP and PSVita.

If you have a PS3, you can download the PSP game from the PS3 and then from your PS3, transfer it to your PSP, so long as you have the appropriate USB cable to connect your PS3 to your PSP, if memory serves me correctly.

          • Lionxie

I don’t have a PS3, but if i can get it off my PSP like that, then sweet! Thanks :)

          • Barrylocke89

You can also download psp games through Sony’s Media Go service on Windows, and from there, transfer it to your PSP with the USB cable that you mentioned. I remember I had to get Corpse Party through this method since my PSP was having issues connecting to my wireless router at the time.

    • Possibly. Ireland has said recently that they’re looking in to doing a small UMD print run exclusively for pre-orders, which may or may not also include a voucher for a a PSN copy. If it comes to pass, it’ll be a regular edition, not a deluxe one like the Kickstarter was for.

      • Lionxie

I hope this is the case for the USA as well. I didn’t even know about the Kickstarter..D:

  • NTaiyokun

Holy shat. They’re localizing this? Why didn’t I hear about it?!?!

    • Testsubject909

Because it’s slightly old news and there hadn’t really been all that many project updates about it?

  • Wafflenaut

Belated Christmas present, but I’ll take it!

  • brian

So they added those things like SCHWAANG in just because?
Sony should be held accountable for making Vic Ireland go out of business with Working Designs, even if it is wayyyy late for that.

  • When I hear schwaang,I immediately think of Wayne’s World.
