Four D&D Players Fall Into A Windows Phone JRPG Parody

By Spencer . December 31, 2012 . 1:38pm

Doom & Destiny from HeartBit Interactive pokes fun at JRPG tropes with four characters that have to fight an unnamed evil whose name cannot be pronounced. With no prophecy around, these heroes were summoned by random and when they enter the Doom & Destiny world they joke about random encounters too.

Doom & Destiny is available now for Windows Phone and Xbox 360 in the Indie Games tab.

  • zed grim

    earthbound parody.

  • ThomasTruong

The fact that it completely used just the default RPGMaker graphics is killing it for me.

    • Seizui

Ugh, default RPG Maker graphics…. yeah, I am definitely feeling you on that.

  • Crevox

Looks like it’s just parodying Final Fantasy (original) and a bit of Earthbound

  • http://darron13.deviantart.com Darron Pirtheesingh

This look like it was made in RPG maker

    • MikeTxn

      Maybe because it is?

      • http://darron13.deviantart.com Darron Pirtheesingh

An interesting theory, it might explain it.

        • MikeTxn

Not a theory. I have both, RPG Maker XP and VX,

The tilesets and the NPC faces are the same as in VX.

And now, before someone misunderstand. I’m not saying that it sucks since it’s on RPG Maker, or they shouldn’t charge for it.

Even with a tool like RPG Maker, it’s still hard and tedious to make one (heck, even using the default options it takes a while to advance in your project).

Now imagine creating a script from the ground, that TOO takes a while if not longer than actually mapping and creating events.

Fun fact: I don’t have the necessary skills to use the script editor. And I created a birdview Zelda-like system using only events. Sadly, the whole thing crashed because of the amount of events I did, and the main event calculated the position and view of every enemy on the map (not screen). And I had to work several workarounds to make circular AoE, since they (at least XP, which was the one I used that time) don’t calculate the square roots naturally.

          • Jack

It wasn’t made in RPG Maker, because RPG Maker doesn’t create Xbox Live Arcade or Windows Phone games. It just uses the tilesets from the game. I am not sure if it is even legal for them to do so, regardless if they even bought RPG Maker.

          • MikeTxn

            Really?
Then yeah, I wish them luck with the lawyers. SInce the whole RTP is copyrighted by Enterbrain, and they give you the license to only use them on RPG Maker.

          • Jack

I doubt Enterbrain would do anything, unless it became the next Angry Birds somehow. There seems to be some grammatical errors in this game too, even from the trailer video. I would actually at least try it though if I had a Windows Phone or an Xbox.

I’ve seen a game on Windows Store called ‘Zelda game’ with MS Paint graphics for $0.99, so there’s absolutely no quality control on these stores, haha.

          • MikeTxn

I had to google it, and damn, I’m speechless.

          • Jack

            Speechless about what?

          • MikeTxn

About that Zelda game. “Zanda: The LINKed swords”.

          • http://darron13.deviantart.com Darron Pirtheesingh

I’m aware, it was a joke xD
I also used RPG maker, but the older versions a few years back

Hi I’m one of the two developers behind Doom & Destiny, i found this discussion in google and wished to reply to the accusations of illegality of our software:
we made the game in rpg-maker vx, we wrote a complete interpreter of the RPGM output data and the software and rtp right owner is aware of what we did and how we did it.

Besides this, the game is really worth a try, it took us about three years of work to finish it to the current state.

          • http://darron13.deviantart.com Darron Pirtheesingh

I see, well that’s fair then. Sadly I neither own a 360 nor a Windows Phone, however. Are you guys planning on releasing it for Android by chance?

  • SpellcraftQuill

Ugh. The font is ugly and it’s just a generic RPG Maker VX (Ace) game.

  • monkey

    could be fun

  • monkey

the game has been out a year already and this article is coming out now?

    • Elvick

      Exposure is exposure.

  • Heartek
  • brian

I’m guessing at least a few people from /v/ are connected to this.

  • Jirin

Ha, I’ll definitely get this if it comes to iOS. This should be hilarious.

  • Tianyu Wei

Lol… this game actually looks good. And it’s a surprise that it’s for Windows Phone!

  • Sergio Briceño

I wish I had a WP. Then I could probably come back to this board and give out fair criticism to both the game and the people bashing it. And of course to play it, seems funny.
