Holy Sorcery Story is a PlayStation Vita roguelike from Compile Heart. Similar to the Shiren the Wanderer series, monsters move only after Pupuru makes her move. Pupuru levels up after gaining enough experience, but once she leaves the dungeon her level goes back to 1. Because of this system, carrying better equipment becomes an important factor.

2013-01-02_230935If Pupuru’s HP falls to 0, she will be knocked out and will be sent back to town. To top it off, players will lose all their items and money acquired during that dungeon run.

There are loads of treasures to discover in dungeons, but beware! There are loads of trap treasure boxes, too. However, there are ways to work around these traps to acquire the items.

2013-01-02_231717 Kuusii has grown a liking to Pupuru and follows her everywhere in the dungeons. It doesn’t have an HP bar, but has a hunger meter instead, which goes down over time or after taking hits from enemies. When Kuusii becomes completely hungry, it’ll no longer listen to Pupuru and may start some trouble of its own.

Although it doesn’t gain experience, players can feed any kind of items to level it up. There are still many mysteries surrounding this gluttonous creature.

Holy Sorcery Story is slated to be released on March 28th, 2013.

    “Compile Heart”

Okay i already know where this is going, half naked loli and a minigame involving fanse…holy crap! No fanservice minigame and the loli actually wears a proper clothes? God saves us!

    • Testsubject909

      Which God do you worship?

I know some people worship Etna for example.

      • farios

        Uhh no i don’t worship a fictional character…

        • Zal_Yagun

Ha. Sounds like something a troll would say at a religious board.

      • d19xx

Is my name on the list?

      • SOME.

        • Testsubject909

Oh hey, here’s the high priest.

      • CirnoLakes

“I know some people worship Etna for example.”
Where do I sign up for this religion?

        • There are generally two ways to sign up. The first and preferred way is to get an Etna tattoo.

Your second option, and I will admit the one that I chose, is to make sure Etna is always–without fail–your highest level character in any playthrough of any Disgaea game (or any other game that has the great opportunity of hosting her).
          Not so hard, right?

    • psycho_bandaid

      it’ll be DLC.

    • Pockystix

sadly they still chose the “start at level 1” gimmick thing for dungeons :/

  • Testsubject909

Sooo… Azure Dreams but you’re limited to a single monster and similar concepts but may or may not have dual tech combo I take it? Or rather just the dungeon aspect of Azure Dreams and to date no news of anything else that may make it approach that game, such as a town building aspect in between downtime which doubles as quest searches or dating sim aspect or house customization?

I’m asking because this sort of gameplay first connects my brain to the aforementioned Azure Dreams, a GBC and PS1 game that to date is still one of my favorite roguelike grid and turn based gotta catch em all monster catching dating sim and sim city dungeon crawler game…

And Izuna and Shiren and Chocobo Dungeon could only barely scratch the itch that game gave me for that very specific genre… That and oddly when I think about it, the only game that came close to replicating that game’s feel was Persona 3 and Persona 4 for it’s fusion dating sim and dungeon crawling fusion.

    • mahrze

Exactly my thoughts. Though I am not that inclined to Azure Dreams, I have -as of yet- not found a better masterpiece for the genre.

      • Testsubject909

As Brian Yup put it. ZHP is close to it. But that whole monster collecting and training aspect really added that extra bit.

Maybe if we’d get a combination of ZHP and Azure Dreams, that’d be nice.

    • brian

ZHP is a roguelike with some city building.

      • Testsubject909

Sort of city building, not the same but yeah. ZHP is the last game of the simultaneous turn grid-based overhead dungeon crawling roguelike genre that I have thoroughly enjoyed.

  • Ryan Chiu

The whole “re-set to Level 1” thing reminds me of Baroque. Damnit, bring this to game to North America. And I hope there isn’t too much loli in this game -.-

    • TheExile285

The story is silliness. The MC is basically trying to find legendary curry to save and a mom and pop curry shop from being put out of buisness by a wallmart style curry shop.

  • Zal_Yagun

if Its a Rougelike, then I welcome it to my home.

  • Ladius

It looks nice, reminds me of Azure Dreams :)

Edit: and apparently I am not the first one to make that comparison :P

    • Testsubject909

I believe we’ll get along just fine.

  • leeorv

@Siliconera staff could you approach them and request a US version? I don’t think most Japanese game companies realize this, but there’s a very large audience of JRPG PSP owners in the US just waiting for more games like this one to purchase a Vita.

    • Ladius

I think this game has a fair chance to be localized as a PSN-only release, CH is a localization-friendly publisher and the game doesn’t look to be text heavy.

  • puchinri

Huh, interesting. I just realized Chocobo’s Dungeon (Wii) has rogue-like elements (I thought of it while reading this) and the bit with Kuusii especially makes me think of it.

It sounds like a lot of fun so far, and I hope it is as good as it seems so far.

    • Testsubject909

I’ve only played Chocobo Dungeon 2 on the PS1.

Had some good times with that one. The white mage was cute too, though they’re always cute so there’s that.

      • puchinri

I’ve made it a goal to play all the Chocobo titles one day, but now mostly because I am having a great time with the Wii game. It’s pretty, the music is great, the plot is fun and the gameplay is pretty excellent.

Guh. The white mage somehow becomes cuter whenever in a Chocobo title (doesn’t matter if it’s Chocobo or another character). Although all of the character classes are too cute for words in the Wii one.

  • Ok. I’m interested. It looks adorable and I could use a good roguelike on the Vita. (Especially since all the other genres I like are covered on it atm.)

  • OverlordZetta

I reeeeaaally hope we get this one. With the “next” ZHP coming to PS3, I need a roguelike for my PSV.

  • are we sure that the dungeon crawling is not just a minigame, and boob rubbing is the main? Complie heart with depth, believe it when i see it!
