Corpse Party: Book of Shadows Will Terrify Players On January 15

By Spencer . January 8, 2013 . 11:00am

corpse2Sachiko will return on January 15 when Xseed releases Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. This game from 5pb is a direct sequel to Corpse Party that uses a first person perspective instead of sprites. Players will examine areas kind of like a point and click adventure game.

Try not to freak out because frightened characters in Book of Shadows lose their composure and ability to make rational decisions. Some choices are timed which adds an element of pressure to the game’s tense atmosphere.

Bad decisions lead to grim "wrong ends," but you can replay Corpse Party: Book of Shadows in search of a happier(?) ending. There’s an option to fast forward text by holding the R button down which should make replays faster. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows will cost $19.99 on PlayStation Network. For more about the game check out our interview where we talk about the elements that make Corpse Party scary.

I finished the first game about 2 or 3 months ago. I’m very excited to be getting the sequel so soon.

  • Barrylocke89

I’m glad that we have a date for the sequel. I’ll be sure to pick it up.

BTW, I don’t think any of your articles mentioned that Xseed has their website up for BoS.

    http://corpsepartybookofshadows.com/

Oh, and don’t forget to hold onto your saves of the original CP. The website says that the only way to play the final chapter (the one that takes place after the original story; the others take place either prior to or in an alternate version of the original) is to a. Have a save of Corpse Party, or b. Collect EVERY Wrong End in BoS.

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

      That’s cool to know. Thanks.

    • LynxAmali

If I’m recalling right, most of the ‘routes’ in Book of Shadows take place after bad-ends and what not in the original with the True End being after the True End of the original.

At least, that’s what I think it was.

      • wyrdwad

Well, sort of. Chapters 1, 2, 5 and 6 take place either following or preceding a bad end route from the first game. Chapters 3 and 4 take place BEFORE the first game, and are thus canonical with all routes; chapter 7 takes place DURING the first game and is canonical with the main route; and chapter 8 is a direct sequel to the true ending of the first game.

  • disgaea36

Kinda sucks they eliminated the sprites thats what made the game awesome IMO but still excited we get the sequel.

    • wyrdwad

Actually, the sprites are still there — they’re used as markers on the map.

      • Barrylocke89

Huh…what happened to your old Disqus account, Sir Wyrdwad?

Also, concerning the Clear Save thing that was mentioned on your site, is it enough for it to be a save that has seen all of the Good Endings, or do I need to have found every bad ending in the original Corpse Party for it to work? I’ve beaten the game, but I haven’t gotten around to getting every bad ending yet (I may have to do that before BoS comes out)

        • wyrdwad

It keeps automatically logging me out, and then when I try to log back in, I forget my password. ;) So I just log back in with whatever account and password I remember first. And sadly, it seems I have quite a few. ;)

        • wyrdwad

A clear save with only one of the “good” endings should be fine. Honestly, I think ANY Corpse Party save is fine — don’t even know if you have to have seen any ending at all. ;)

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

This is great news. I can’t wait! Hopefully the game will be as nerve wracking in first person as it was with the sprites.

  • Koulamatata

They announce the release date one week before it releases? That’s awesome. Less waiting.

  • z_merquise

Me and my brother really like the first game. I’m really going to get this.

Just a question, does this game still had Yuka’s epic quest to find the girl’s restroom so she can pee. That’s the only part that bothered me in the first game.

    • Barrylocke89

Very few scenarios has ever left me wanting to punch a fictional teenager more than Yuka’s Amazing Potty Adventure. Ugh.

    • Enma_Kozato

It always bothered me that she didn’t just pee in a corner or something :/ You’re trapped in a haunted elementary school, where to properly take care of your bodily business does not apply anymore >:I

    • wyrdwad

Oh, it’s even worse in Book of Shadows. You get Yuka’s epic quest to find a place to bury her pee-soaked underwear. ;) Pretty sure somebody involved has a pee fetish or something. But don’t worry: the rest of the game is well worth your time, and the uncomfortableness you feel from the pee-related questing should serve to augment the overall disturbing atmosphere of the game. Because remember: there are many different shades of disturbing! ;)

      • landlock

Europe aswell? I noticed it’s already been rated by PEGI.

        • wyrdwad

Yep. Hopefully shortly after the NA release.

      • Nozomi

What da fuq, srsly? How much of the game is silly fetish quirks in proportion to the horror aspect of the series? The first game scared me, but I have no interest in playing a sequel that has been reduced to panty-related quests and other silly fetish-like things.

        • wyrdwad

That’s only a very, very minor part of the game. I mentioned it solely because z_merquise specifically asked. It’s not like that’s what the game is ABOUT, though, and that “quest” lasts all of maybe 5 minutes (tops!) in a 20-hour game. Believe me, it’s very much all about the scares, NOT about fetishistic panty quests.

          • Nozomi

Thank you for clearing that up. I’m glad to hear the sequel stays true to the horror aspect and hasn’t devolved like some other series.

          • z_merquise

            Good to know.

I got lot’s of games playing recently but I’m still going to get this as soon as it’s available in PSN.

    • Göran Isacson

I KNOW right? Girl there were SEVERAL buckets just lying around in that place, no reason she couldn’t have gone in one of those…

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Corpse Party become one of my most favorite games. I’m glad XSeed is bringing this over. I’m going to be getting this once it drops onto PSN.

  • revenent hell

Well normally I expect a release date to be more in advance but this news makes me super happy none the less. I cant wait to play it!

  • http://twitter.com/tenetan Tenetan

This is the US release date I take it, any Date for the EU release?

    • wyrdwad

Not yet, but it hopefully won’t be too far behind.

  • Carlos Daniel Flores Loreto

Awright, day one purchase, as I did with the prequel, which I haven’t finished yet.

  • http://www.cosmosgaming.com cosmosgaming

Not only is this exciting that the game will be out soon, but as this and Unchained Blades for 3DS will be out does this mean XSeed will be announcing more titles soon? Is there anything else that’s not out yet that they previously announced?

    • wyrdwad

Nope, but that is indeed about to change! Expect some big announcements later this month. ;)

      • Barrylocke89

That’s why we love you guys! Keep doing what you do, and I’ll keep irresponsibly spending my money. :)

      • neo_firenze

Here’s hoping “big” announcements means the massive Trails in the Sky SC. No, I don’t mind reading waaay too much into seemingly innocent comments ;)

Seriously though, other than the perpetual SC questions, there are some other mighty fine Falcom titles that just seem like legit possibilities (i.e. either/both of Ys Celceta or Trails of Nayuta would be very welcome news too).

  • Neah

    Hype

    Hype
    Best news this week :3

    • JMaster3000

Nope, Pokemon X and Y are the best news this week lol but this is good too :3

  • Ayaka

Finally I can see Naho again~

And play the game of course. But having to deal with Naho again is very nice.

    • wyrdwad

She gets a whole chapter this time, too!

  • ElRobotico

They should cut in half the price of the first game (I know they did before) but they should do it again for those ppl that couldnt get it last time.

  • Brandonmkii

Thanks Tom! And the other Xseed bros and brahs.

  • Alphabet Soup

YES! YES! YES! Reckon I’ll be sleeping with the lights on once more~!

  • negineBIT

Looking forward for a happier ending if such thing existed in this game ;D

  • pantsonadog

Day one buy for sure. The first game was one of the best games I played last year.

  • Ricardo C

I wasn’t going to get it because of reasons but…. it wont hurt.

  • Naux

Surprise, Bu… I mean book of shadows! xD
Does anyone know if this will be available on the European PSN, too?

    • wyrdwad

Yep. Shortly after its American release

  • DoSHachiko

    I played the Japanese version, and I did enjoy the game play. <3 So, yeah, worth it. ^^ Even though it scared me. ; n ;

  • Göran Isacson

Ooh, so it’s like Amnesia where looking at the monsters freak you out and make you incapacitated? I do like that, I do like that indeed aaand now I’m imagining a cross-over where Daniel ends up in Heavenly Host High. This would be hilariously awesome.

  • gamefreak86

Man I love Xseed. tbh, only watched a bit of gameplay from the first beginning and I got hyped. problem is vita memory is still ridiculously priced.

  • Ladius

“Try not to freak out because frightened characters in Book of Shadows

    atmosphere.”

Sounds awesome! The first Corpse Party was a wonderful surprise, I hope this sequel is in line with its quality.

I’m also very excited about XSeed’s upcoming announcements, Wyrdwad has been teasing them on the XSeed board for quite some time.

  • Yaminess

This was supposed to come out before the end of 2012 but better late than never…either way, really looking forward to this!

  • Seraph

It probably won’t come out here in my country (New Zealand) since Corpse Party didn’t…

A shame since I was looking forward to having it on my Vita.

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

I bought the first but so sorry that I didn’t get around to playing it yet! Will have to try and bump that up on my queue.

  • mm99

    RUN RABBIT RUN!!!

Seeing Yuuya Kizami again will be a blast.

  • artemisthemp

According to US Blog post should EU get it shortly after US, this most likely means 1 week to 1 month

  • Go2hell66
