Meet Shin Megami Tensei IV’s Mysterious Black Samurai And Tokyo’s New Leaders

By Sato . January 9, 2013 . 2:15am

Yesterday, we showed two factions in Shin Megami Tensei IV that survivors flocked to after Tokyo fell to ruins. Atlus also revealed some new info about the characters that lead the Cult of Gaia and Asura Association. Players will also run into a mysterious black samurai who appears throughout the story.

image Tayama

A man of high stature, working for the Asura Association in Tokyo. He is widely respected by everyone around him for negotiating with the demons to keep order in Tokyo. It is still unknown as far as what measures he took to negotiate with the dark side.

image Kaga

She is a member of a religious organization in Tokyo, known as the Cult of Gaia. She doesn’t agree with Tayama and their ways of negotiating with the demons, and continuously fights alongside the Cult of Gaia to eradicate the demons. It is said that those who possess the same level skill of Kaga are few in numbers.

The mysterious Black Samurai appears numerous times in front of the main characters. She seems to speak in riddles containing cryptic clues every time she appears before vanishing. For an unknown reason, she has a vast knowledge of both Mikado of the East and Tokyo.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is slated for release in 2013 on Nintendo 3DS.

i bet the black samurai will end up being one of the protags friends from the future. but any way, for my first playthrough, i’m siding with the cult of gaia

  • Aerodynamisch

Hard choice. Would definitely go for the Neutral route as usual which seems to be the Black Samurai.

Never did like the over-religilous parties to side with.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

I’m siding with the Black Samurai. I mean just look at her face. How can you not trust that lol =P

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Black Samurai: “What comes up but yet must come down?”

  • neetyneety

And then the Black Samurai turns out to be…. DUN DUN DUUUUUN

    MY MOM!

    • Tales_of_Master

Considering the fact she supposedly talks to you seductively……I hope she’s not

      • Testsubject909

        Not into incest stories?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

      WAHT A TWIST

  • Isaac Newton

    All those three hmmmm….

    I will choose myself LOL
    True Samurai Ending!

  • Göran Isacson

The blurb about Black Samurai explicitly saying she just appears and spouts cryptic nonsense makes me suspicious, but then again this IS Atlus and there could actually be a compelling story behind her being cryptic, instead of just having her be mysterious for the sake of a mystery. Because I don’t like that kind of thing.

  • imaguni

I like Kaga’s design… too bad I’m still stuck on my Neutral ways. I am sensing a fallen-from-grace tale from the Black Samurai…

    • Dave_O_Segundo

I don’t know, the fact that the black samurai speaks in
riddles, has vast knowledge and is using the demonica suit from strange journey make it seen like she has some relation to that game; maybe she is actually louis* fe***.

      • imaguni

Haaa, tbh I’ve considered it. The black and red is pretty ‘familiar’.

        • Strain42

I doubt it’s our old friend, Louis. Louis doesn’t hide himself. That’s always been sort of the fun is that he pops up and everyone knows it’s him.

Given what we know and have heard, I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it was Lilith.

          • Guest

Yeah, that’s why I’m doubtful it’s him/her. I figure they’d stick to tradition for a main SMT game. What if she were a nod to Louis’ aide in Nocturne? The informant/riddles part might fit, wouldn’t it?

    • MrTyrant

Too bad that you’ll play only one run as for me I always do all the routes since the new game+ add interesting stuff.

      • imaguni

I didn’t say that… Neutral is my favorite, but I usually try all the routes to get a different perspective!

  • gamefreak86

Never played any smt but the art is always top notch.

the Black Samurai looks like the ppl from Strange Journey and since it’s a girl with a mysterious past or stuff could she be the law side of SJ or the dark I can’t remember which.

  • isotrex

Yeah, black samurai, best costume ever… rather, head gear. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

More like Black Stormtrooper if you ask me.

    • ErhmagerdWerds

Guess you didn’t play Strange Journey?

      • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

I did. I’m aware of what it is. Just doesn’t scream Samurai at me.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ramon.navas.9 Ramón Navas

Maybe she’s a Samurai because she can summon demons

          • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

If that’s what classifies a Samurai in this game then that would seem so. Since you can customize your appearance with armor I wonder what you can be able to look like.

  • MrTyrant

Seems like the samurai is the neutral one and I wonder who she is. Kaga is sexy, perhaps the only good thing in Gaia cult D:

….what if Black Samurai true name is Louise D; haha

    • Testsubject909

Neutral or an envoy of Louis (Edit: had to change that, sorry)?

Edit: This is just me wanting another True Demon ending a la Nocturne.

  • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

    I like Kaga already.

  • SCORPIONSERKEN

I want this game so badly. After replaying Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor and Persona (3 & 4) at least 2 times each one i can’t get enough of this series. =D

    • Testsubject909

But you only played one game from that series…

I don’t keed but I understand. You like the game and all the other series that were borne from SMT. The mood, stories and themes that are told in all of these games are poignant and interesting and you’re just thirsty for more.

No worries… we all are… But hey, you got a DS. If you want to try a second actual SMT title, bite into Strange Journey while you wait.

      • SCORPIONSERKEN

I played Strange Journey and love it, but for some reason Strange Journey hate me. I love the story (In fact, i think is a lot better than Nocturne) but a lot of the gameplay elements feel weird to me because after using Press Turn System for a long time it feel weird playing SJ, that and the fact that the difficulty, while enjoyable, sometimes feel like it was a little unfair (But only in optional missions, the story missions were awesome in every level).

Someday i will play it again…. maybe before IV to remind me how much i love to be slapped in the face by the bosses just to readjust my skills and party and destroy them.

        • Testsubject909

For me, to be fair, I was unfair to the game.

You know how you can enter a code to get a demon? Yeah, the password system…

Yeah… One day, I sat down, and just messed around with the basic password for a pixie. I ended up giving that pixie 80+ Magic and 50+ agility as well as end game skills. She wrecked everything… And then after the battle magically regenerated all her HP and MP. Yup. I had made a nigh invincible pixie early on.

Then I did the same thing for Jack Frost…

  • SetzerGabbiani

I love Black Samurai’s nod…well blatant reference to Strange Journey. I bet that it’s Louisa Ferre going by the description.

    • LightZero

Yeah but as mention above Louis doesn’t like to hide his identity. I’m going with Black Samurai being Lilith.

  • KuroNathan

Oh man I loved the demonicas from strange journey! Knowing Atlus she’s probably from the Schwarzwelt and fell out into an alternate world or something.

    • SetzerGabbiani

That would be pretty great. It would be awesome if the two stories were connected somehow.

      • KuroNathan

haha, usually in the SMT main series there are references and connections to the previous games. somehow.

        • Testsubject909

The journalist from SMT Nocturne for example.

That guy’s a reference to SMT 1… Oh… crap I might’ve said too much now. Well anyways, to know the truth and the whole truth…You’ll just have to go into the depths to find it.

        • SetzerGabbiani

I want to fight Hitoshura and the protagonist from Strange Journey. Optional impossible battles FTW!!

  • disqus_clIJtumyL3

    Samurai Blue

    • Testsubject909

      Wait… wait I got it…

Where is it… Oh, there we go!

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9PsP8Wk5Fs

Is that what you were hinting about?

      • disqus_clIJtumyL3

No, i mean from ouendan2, song.

        • Testsubject909

          Ah…

Hmm, wrong joke then, my bad.

  • ragingmerifes

Looks like the Demonica is smiling.
Anyway, I love this new character artwork. It looks really original.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hines.greeniii Hines Green III

For some reason these characters look like they could fit in King of Fighters so hard……

    • CirnoLakes

Who IS that glorious androgynous figure in your avatar?

      • Testsubject909

Holy, it’s a guy. Didn’t notice it from afar.

Wow, we’re off topic aren’t we?

  • Tom_Phoenix

You know, even though it initially SEEMED like a traditional Law vs Chaos conflict, this new information makes things a lot less clear cut.

In SMT I&II, one of the big differences between Law and Chaos was that proponents of Law hated demons and actively worked to eradicate them, whereas the proponents of Chaos wanted to work together with Demons. Yet, here, the seemingly “Law”-oriented faction is working alongside demons to protect humanity, whereas the seemingly “Chaos”-oriented faction is actively fighting against them.

Either the two organisations don’t have a clear cut ideology like the Messians and Gaians did in earlier games OR there is something different about the demons here that has influenced their policies.

    • Testsubject909

I already stated this last time in the previous article. The “Law of the Jungle” is in no way Chaos, it’s still a form of Law and I think ever since Nocturne, they started to realize that. I believe they’ll still have relatively clear cut ideologies, but I continue to fail to see either of these two organization as the side of Chaos.

This is a war of Law vs Law, a conflict of two different form of order…

Now what I’m most curious about is the black Samurai. To date, I think that’s the one who might be leading us into an actual path of Chaos… Maybe…

But I do agree with the point you made. It’s interesting that these two sides have altered their approach… I suppose it’s to fit a more modern take on things. Law on one hand is structure and harmony. Making peace with the demons, pacifying them and adding them to the structure and negotiating with them provides said lawful approach. Whereas the other, focusing on destruction, can be more akin to anarchy or rebellion which would be closer to Chaos…

Wait, did I just mess up a memory in my head just now? I’ma go check that other article in a moment. Food and coffee first.

  • ThatBlackGuy

Annnd their goes my hopes of the black samurai being gore, oh well cryptic riddles are always a plus.
