Killer Is Dead Turns You Into A Killer Executioner This Summer

By Spencer . January 16, 2013 . 2:34am

Grasshopper Manufacture’s next title, Killer is Dead, puts you in the shoes of Mondo Zappa, a 35 year old chap from America who just joined the executioners. Zappa’s job is to kill other killers and people who have committed heinous crimes. Killer is Dead, Famitsu explains, is a story about life and death.

Zappa hold a katana in his right hand and his left hand has been augmented so it can turn into different weapons like a gun and a drill. As the game progresses, Zappa’s augmented arm will become more powerful. The arm absorbs the blood from slain foes and charges up an Adrenaline Burst, which gives Zappa a powerful slashing attack. There is a bit of mystery around his augmented arm since Zappa has no memory of the event. Killer is Dead concept art shows a man with a katana and what appears to be a metallic hand. Perhaps, this is an early idea for Zappa?

Did we mention Mondo is a sweet talker? He charmed Mika Takekawa, a 20 year old woman from Japan, into living with him. Mika makes Zappa his favorite dish, soft boiled eggs, and is his assistant. Viviane Squall, a 25 year old woman from England, is Mondo’s boss. In front of clients, Viviane never loses her cool, but in private she can fly off the handle. Because she can keep her feelings sealed up, Viviane is seen as perfect and is well respected. Brian Roses is the 65 year old director of the executioners. He has a cybernetic body and used to be the world’s top executioner, but now he stepped away from the field. Finally, we have Victor a mysterious musician that can control people’s emotions with music. Victor who has a skeletal apperance vows to bring evil to the world.

Killer is Dead is scheduled to come out this summer on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Kadokawa Games will publish the title in Japan and former Tecmo CEO Yoshimi Yasuda is listed as the excutive producer. Goichi Suda is the game’s director.

    Suda at it again :D

  • Göran Isacson

I hope, I hope, oh how I hope that this game takes a turn for the truly bizarre mood in Killer 7. I think the premise has a good chance of turning for the stranger, like the live-in woman being a figment of his imagination/a spy/BOTH OF THE ABOVE… I just want something a little more strange than what we’ve gotten from him lately.

And if not… well, at least it might be nice to play as someone who’s not either obnoxiously (if intentionally) macho or overtly peppy.

    • Paradox me

Not a Garcia ‘Fucking’ Hotspur fan, I take it?

      • Göran Isacson

See, here’s the thing. I don’t MIND Garcia Hotspur and Juliet Starling. Heck, I own Shadows of the Damned! It’s decent. It’s just that I do NOT connect with them the same way that I did with the Smiths, even if they have WAY more detailed plots and characters to their credit. I think that after Travis Touchdown EVERY Suda 51 char became this in-your-face-obnoxious exploration/takedown of certain character archetypes and tropes. You can have that- heck, for all we know this may be a take-down of the James Bond “suave secret agent” type of sorts.

But I just feel like Suda does it the SAME WAY, all the time. Travis, Garcia and Juliet are all loudmouthed douchebags who get come-uppance for their obvious flaws (more or less), and it’s starting to feel so blatant and retreaded that I wish for change. Mondo can still be a terrible person but maybe he could be subtle and quiet in his terribleness, more like Patrick Bateman than Johnny Knoxville if that makes sense? I want to see some unexpected mindscrews again. And maybe this is just me, but most of the “mindscrews” that have come from Suda 51 lately are FAR from unexpected.

        • AkuLord3

Juliet not a douchebag…loud but not a douche and Garcia…eh. Suda made Travis who he was because of the setting for the games. I do agree with u though that it be cool to have a same feeling that Killer7 had

          • Göran Isacson

I would argue that the way Juliet treats Nick some times could qualify her as slightly douchey, even if that is mostly due to immaturity than outright ill will. But that may just be splitting hairs.

  • I love Suda51. All of his games are fun.
Getting No More Heroes vibe from this game. Can’t wait to see the trailer :D

    • Zal_Yagun

Absorbing blood sounds alot like killer7 as well

  • I totally forgot about this game, great to hear more news about it. Though the article makes the game sound interesting, I’m sitting on the fence until I see some gameplay.

  • Wake

That’s pretty cool. I want them to take another stab with the whole open world design. I just want to see what bizarre stuff Suda51 can come up with the whole sandbox aspect in effect. They didn’t really utilize it in the first NMH game, but just imagine a city with Killer 7, NMH, Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned weirdness wrapped up in one explorable place.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Very cool. Hope Grasshopper have refined their combat engine from all the experience they’ve had with all their past games. They know how to make interesting characters and unique stories, but still haven’t gotten down that slick gameplay to go with it for that perfect mix, yet.

  • Altritter

I like this already. Always excited for new Suda games.

  • His name is Mondo, I wonder if SUDA took it from Sumio Mondo…
I”m interested in the rest of it, maybe it is a darker NMH.

  • Natat

Always excited for Suda51’s games. I still think Killer7’s his best game though, I hope this one goes for that kinda atmosphere as well.

  • Another charming sounding game from Suda 51. Summer is going to be very interesting this year. Hopefully though, the game will be more Killer 7 than No More Heroes.

  • TruSpindash

This sounds really interesting so far, I wonder if this game will be a return to bizarre like Killer7 or more of the wacky style that Suda is now know for. Either way I am excited for this game already.

  • Darkrise

Day 1! I’m so glad we get another home console Suda game.

  • imaguni

I hope Viviane has the same voice actress as Bayonetta…

  • SirRichard

Sounds like it’s halfway between Killer7 and No More Heroes, and that’s a great thing. Hopefully the Western release isn’t too far behind the Japanese one.

  • There are no words to describe how cool that plot and description of characters was. Reading that alone has totally put a picture in my mind that knows this will be a good game. Well done Suda, well done.

  • z_merquise

    Screenshots of the game:

Really love the stylish look and the over-the-top character designs.

    • That art direction is fucking awesome. Suda makes bonkers games so I’m hooked on it already anyways.

    • XiaomuArisu

      that looks awesome!
I hope its as fun as its looks.

  • Gorrrrrrrre-geous!

  • eilegz

looks like no more heroes art style not bad at all

  • Anime10121

Looks/Sounds fantastic! Definitely giving this a try after the fun I had with Lollipop Chainsaw! Didnt care much for No more Heroes as I felt too much of the game just was filler to get you to the next boss. The story in Killier is Dead is another Kill assassins type game so hopefully, this one turns out better than No Mo Hiros

What alsoran gaijin are they going to pull out of the old hat to direct this one I wonder? Mind you, all while continuing to put Suda’s name and face on it.

No More Heroes was a fun experience, alas those Grasshopper feet made a hearty leap over the old shark right after that.

  • Demeanor

Art looks fantastic. AND I want Jessie and Mayu cosplaying as K.I.D. female characters ^ ^

  • AkuLord3

I was wondering when this game would get new news. It was said before this game would be a combo of NMH and Killer7 so i’m supa interested. Also we get to know Dan Smith’s character in this, if that’s still in play

  • It sounds just like NMH with a few alterations. Wutever. fine with me.NMH was good and so will this

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Suda51= Gore, Insane enemies and hot chicks

  • gomas

really hyped on this one…let`s just hope for a more killer 7 approach rather than a lollypop/shadows of the damned approach. (even though he didn`t directed none of those)

  • puchinri

Scary to hear that Kadokawa is publishing after what went on with ES and Prope’s game, but Lollipop Chainsaw did come over (but didn’t WB have a hand in that?).

Feeling a bit mixed on the story and elements now, but I’ll probably keep watching it.
