Sting’s Date A Live Game Has, Well, Dating Sim Elements

By Spencer . January 18, 2013 . 3:09pm

imageCompile Heart and Sting are working on a PlayStation 3 game based on the Date A Live anime series. Date A Live: Rinne Utopia is a spirit capturing adventure game.

Date A Live: Rinne Utopia will have original date events designed by series writer Koshi Tachibana. Toka Yatogami, Kotori Itsuka, and Origami Tobiichi are confirmed to be in the game. Players will be able to see perfectly recreated scenes in the PS3 game. Date A Live: Rinne Utopia also has a brand new character named Rinne.

What’s unclear about Date A Live: Rinne Utopia is how the game plays. Sting, maker of Hexyz Force and Ygddra Union, is listed as the developer and Sting usually designs games with unique gameplay systems like moving a wisp around to reanimate dead knights. Date A Live: Rinne Utopia is slated for release this summer.

Sting is such a buzzword for me; I love how undeterred they are from bringing extremely unique concepts to gaming, and I’m definitely going to keep a closer eye on this title now.

would like to see more yuri dating sim rpgs

How can I give you a super cake?

    • biskmater

that’s great and all, but where did the yuri come from?

      • contention

yeah, nothing yuri-ish about this game, or the source material. Kind of came out of nowhere.

as a side note – unless they depart pretty hard from the source material, I can’t see this game being anything other than a visual novel. I mean, there are no minions, no random battles, no anything to level up on. Just a few bosses, and then the game is over.

        • biskmater

you got a pretty valid point there, but you don’t need much of an excuse to include random enemies, even random punks and stray dogs make for random battles, when talking about normal dudes, but since they are already adding a new character and events, why not?

      • Himiko

I think its cause Rinne is presumed as the new main girl in this from the teaser and the subtitle is Rinne’s Utopia. Implies a harem wink wink with girls.

        • biskmater

Normally i may agree, but in this type of games, it usually just means a new heroine (to hook up with) I really doubt they would change the most definitely nice but otherwise unremarkable male protagonist.

          • Himiko

haha definitely. If Sting does go with it, thank god since its no different than playing as a name/designed male protag. I’m for letting you name them yourself etc.

  • malek86

The term “adventure” in japanese games is normally used for visual novels, right? I don’t think this is gonna stray too much for the norm of anime-based games. I also think Sting is just there for technical development, as they already had experience in porting visual novel titles to the PSP.

    • Himiko

      Adventure Visual Novel basically.

  • riceisnice

I hope they’re still working on the Dept Heaven series.

  • Himiko

This sounds great. Kind of like a Yuri Adventure Galge because of the name, Rinne and Utopia.

  • TatsuyaKyo

Date A Live: Rinne Utopia is a spirit capturing adventure game.

    Replace “spirit” with “girl”.

  • Kai2591

but for the ps3 huh….hmm…they usually do this kind of thing on portables…

    • malek86

True, but there have been a few visual novels on PS3 too. Overall it’s not impossible. And I guess Compile Heart has more expertise on the PS3 than any other platform.

      • Kai2591

oh yeah..there were a few others before, like White Album and Tears To Tiara, if I’m not mistaken.

        • almostautumn

          Don’t forget 5bp’s titles; Robotics;Notes, Muv-Luv, Dunamis 15.

    • Himiko

Idea Factory? sure. This is Sting though.

  • amagidyne

That shot tells me everything I need to know. Wake me up when Sting’s soul is freed from Idea Factory’s cursed golden monkey idol.

    • Himiko

That shot tells you nothing. Stop acting stupid.

    • M’iau M’iaut

I believe that is a still from the anime series which is based off a light novel. IF may be many things but any ecchi here existed before they got involved in the game.

      • amagidyne

I didn’t say anything about ecchi. However, I did say something about a cursed golden monkey idol and the souls trapped within it. Idea Factory has been doing this to unwary travelers for years. Not much I can do but wait.

        • Himiko

Idea Factory has nothing to do with this game… At least its only Compile Heart and Sting right now.

          • Yerld_CK

For all intents and purposes, IF and CH are one and the same. There’s a different brand name and a different representative, but they the same staff (who move between various IF projects, whether it’s Compile Heart branded or not), ownership, office space (same building, same floor), and upper management.

          • Himiko

            Publisher in this case though.
