Lightning Is Fighting For Noel’s Soul, Lumina Was Designed By Crystal Chronicles Staff

By Sato . January 23, 2013 . 2:31am

lumina Famitsu reports has new information on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. The magazine reports Toshiyuki Itahana, best known for his works on the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series, designed Lumina. He was also responsible for designing one of Lightning’s costumes. In the recent trailer, Lightning is seen sporting a purple dress, rapier and Barano shield.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is going to be faster paced. Styles can be switched instantly and commands will be executed the moment a button is pressed. The ATB system will also be busier than ever, as it will also be applied on the field this time around. Actions such as dashing and going down dunes will diminish the action bar, meaning we’ll likely see plenty of action during non-combat parts of the game.

For those of you who’ve been wondering about that fight scene against Noel, apparently Lightning is fighting in an attempt to free his soul.

According to an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the order was to make a leather body suit for Lightning. The arm pieces were meant to look like spinal cords. However, the shield and sunglasses were designed by someone else.

I wasn’t wondering (about the fight scene with Noel). But the more I hear of this game, the more like a cobbled, Frankenstein mess it sounds like its shaping up to be. The story sounds all over the place. Even for a SE game. At least XIV looks decent, but that’s because they’re going back to their roots. Once you get into time-travel, the stories have to be EXCEPTIONALLY brilliant or they just fall apart. I’m not convinced that SE have the mustard to write something so cohesive. They haven’t so far.

    • Masa

You do realize the only reason this game is being made is because it won’t take much money and time, they’ll use most of the resources from the other 2 games and make alot of cash from their die-hard ff fans who will buy any crap, this game = cheap cash in

      • Anon-non

I agree with you, but you don’t have to be a bully. I’m definitely getting this because i like the characters enough. It’s fine if you don’t. But don’t make others feel bad for liking things you don’t. It’s bad behaviour in a gaming community and I’m surprised you’re not getting a warning yet.

      • Herok♞

No a cheap cash in is when they release 1000 versions of FF4, this looks to have somework done to it even if it does reuse assets but since when does reused resourses mean a bad game?

        • Peeka Chu

Actually the cheap cash in is: FF – All The Bravest. I think its the lowest rated game in the last 5 years or so. Hasn’t scored higher than a 3. I’m not 100% on the “let’s hate SE” bandwagon, but that sort of game is indicative of their greater lack of a strong identity the past little while. I think that the company is floundering, but that’s not to say that it can’t right itself.

          • Herok♞

Well on the other hand they did just something like Bravely Default, I would be perfectly happy if they just keep the bad games on IOS while making decent to great games on consoles.

        • Solomon_Kano

He never did call it bad. In his opinion, this looks like a cheap cash-in. That says nothing of its quality. Being that it reuses assets created in the past two games, that’s also not a false statement.

I want to play this myself, but he’s not wrong about reusing assets being cheap. It’s sensible, especially with a story like they’ve set up here, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t cheap. Again though, that says nothing about its quality.

          • Herok♞

“make alot of cash from their die-hard ff fans who will buy any crap, this game = cheap cash in.” I think when someone calls something crap then they don’t think to highly of it.

          • Solomon_Kano

Haha. Guess I was reading the wrong comment. I thought you were responding to Peeka Chu, but he was responding to you actually. Welp, that was a waste of time lol.

          • Herok♞

The moral of the story is Disqus is confusing.

          • Solomon_Kano

            Sure is lol.

        • Lowell Denzel Orlando Richmond

we need FF5 and 6 in the same style CC and Dissidea where modelled

          • Herok♞

I honestly would love for Square to work on 3D FF5 and 6 for either 3DS or Vita

      • M’iau M’iaut

You can express concerns without judging those interested in something you are not. The first two parts of your post if true are business decisions one is perfectly acceptable to see in different ways. The last however, is indicative of the personal asides that are not welcome here and need to stop.

      • Tony F.

The gameplay is clearly a test to Versus, so I don’t think it’s just to make quick cash. Plus, it’s easier to test with a strong brand as XIII.

        • mahrze

That’s more or less XIII. At least how I see it. They are testing all the things they want to do and which would apply to a game like versus. I dislike the whole hating on XIII, I also dislike the whole hating on SE.But, all this time (maybe being hopeful) I’ve been thinking that XIII is a guinea pig for games to come. Final Fantasy IX was the last game you could freely travel the world by airship, no preset locations. And I remember reading that they want to do the same on XIII-VS. Who knows?

          • natchu96

Most of us just want stuff localized/actually made to begin with, really.

        • Solomon_Kano

From what little we’ve seen of this, which is less than we’ve seen of Versus (never thought I’d type that about anything lol), it doesn’t really look like Versus’ battle system. Versus looks like KH spliced with the fight scenes from Advent Children. With some TPS action thrown in for Noctis’ friend with the guns.

    • Herok♞

Well I think since the story is going to large, they are just throwing random bits about it in stories to keep us guessing how it happens hence its all over the place, I wait in til any game is out before passing judgement on its story.

    Liberator of Souls indeed.

So it seems like Nomura was ordered to design the leather body suit eh… And I don’t get the spinal cord connection lol.

In the recent trailer, Lightning is seen sporting a purple dress, rapier and Barano shield.
I think I missed it…. Can some1 link the trailer to me plz? Tht should look good on Lightning :)

    • Ehren Rivers

The trailer mentioned here was not released to the public yet. It was shown behind closed doors during the media tour, an incomplete trailer showcasing two more continents. Also during said set of demos were at least three other costumes.

        Thk.

  • Randgriz

Are you sure Lightning is not fighting to save Serahs soul?

    http://gamemuse.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Final-Fantasy-XIII-Lightning-Returns-2.gif

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

I think everything else is just a side quest for her in the process of saving Serah.

      • Randgriz

I dont think theres anything wrong with Noel, he just thought lightning was dead. Serah is the only person whos soul is in jepordy, i feel like there could be a mistranslation.

        • Herok♞

I don’t think it is a mistranslation because so far have seen Noel so up in trailers and we don’t exactly know what happened to any one after 13-2 so everyone’s souls could be danger, since Lightning is supposed to be helping everyone get to a world that isn’t about to die.

    • Syltique

In LR, chaos has taken hold of people’s souls and amplified their anxieties and guilt. For Noel, his guilt for killing Caius, destroying the heart of Etro, and essentially being the one to end the world is tearing him apart now. He attacks Lightning saying he has to “make it right.” He’s a twisted version of his former self.

For Lightning to liberate someone’s soul and take them to the new world, they must be freed of their chaos burden. It’s basically the same as most ghost stories. People cling to this world because of a lingering regret or strong emotion. Lightning will probably have to do this for tons of characters in the game, and possibly the entire cast of XIII. This gives each character a satisfying resolution in the story while still furthering the plot.

Serah is obviously part of that goal too, but who knows when she actually says that line. It could be before she even fully accepts the mantle of “liberator of souls” and takes on this much larger task.

  • Guest

    sorry for the double post

  • Detrimont

still dont think she looks like serah, except for the hair

    • Peeka Chu

They look like they could be sisters, I think.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

I think its because of her facial expression is drawn differently….

  • baha

I think they actually mean “copy-pasted by Crystal Chronicles Staff “

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

……………i don’t think that Lumina looks a lot like Serah though. Her face just does not look so much alike except for her hair.

  • Ben Chau

    Look at that nose

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Apparently Lightning is fighting in an attempt to free his soul… by killing him? She wants to free his soul from Noel’s body apparently.

    • natchu96

Depending on what afterlife is like in their world, His Mileage May Vary . . .

Noel became the next “Caius” at the end of XIII-2 after he killed him. Then it wouldn’t be too far-fetched

  • Spider-Man

Expecting Lightning at some point to drop to her knees, holding Noel’s body and scream; “WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR?!”

  • Settsuo

Just hearing Crystal Chronicles, somewhere made my day.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Sounds cool that the game will be even faster paced, and with the whole saving Noel’s soul idea, I guess that means he died? I’m not sure how they’re going to bring the story together, but I hope they do it well.

    • Anime10121

Nah, he didnt die, they already explained the Chaos corrupted his heart.

      • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

I wonder what he’s been doing for the past 500 years though lol

  • the9reen9uy

I will play this just because I love the name Lumina.. That was my character name when FFXI first came out! =)

  • http://twitter.com/DarrylThinks The Letter D

I’m really interested in seeing how combat plays out. From the sound of it, it seems to be drawing some inspiration of Type-0, which is apparently the fastest version of the ATB system to date. From the the look of the trailers, it still looks like class XIII and XIII-2, where you don’t really have control of character movement. But since Lightning is the sole playable character, I assume that SE has made it so that we actually control her. After all, actions are mapped to the face buttons, so it would be kind of silly for us NOT to be able to control her movement and positioning directly.

  • $29082171

That little girl creeps me out, especially in the picture used for the thumbnail.

  • Christopher

FIGHTING FOR HIS SOUL?! Man, if Noel doesn’t get an extended story, i’ll be royally pissed.
