Square Enix Files Drakengard & Princess And The Legendary Ring Trademarks

By Spencer . January 29, 2013 . 3:04am

imageSquare Enix filed a protective trademark for Drag-on Dragoon, the Japanese title for Drakengard, in Japan. No word if Square Enix plans on doing anything with the series, which was a prequel to Nier, but this new trademark could be for a digital re-release. More interesting is a new trademark from Square Enix for Princess and the Legendary Ring, which doesn’t appear connected to any announced title. A subtitle for a new Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles game, perhaps?

Sega also registered Chaos Heroes Online and Red Blood. Namco Bandai filed trademarks for Unison Chronicles and Unisonant Pack. Hmm… I wonder if those are tied to Tales of the World: Tactics Union.

for some mysterious reason i am strongly interested in the crystal chronicles series and i would love to see it return

    • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

It’s no mystery. Crystal Chronicles is great.

  • komiko12

    iOS games? Hehe.. Just Joking.

  • epy

Me from five years ago: OMG!!! New Drakengard!!! Can’t wait!
Me now: Heh, some web or mobile stuff of course…

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha haaa yes. We have become a rather cynical sort when it comes to announcements from Square Enix, haven’t we?

    • Masa

Me from five years ago: OMG!!! New Drakengard!!! Can’t wait!
Me now: Meh, Square suck now…

      (FIXED)

      • landlock

Now that Cavia no longer exist. A new Drakengard wouldn’t be the same anyway.

      • flamindogpoo

It’s not Square that sucks; it’s the guys who made FFXIII that do. They still make fine games, a lot of which don’t even come to the West. They also produce some pretty good games, notably Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider, which were both pretty good and regarded so by many sources.

They do some stupid stuff, yea, but ultimately, it’s just been the idiots running Final Fantasy since XIII that’s given the appearance that Square doesn’t care about anybody but themselves anymore.

    • kylehyde

Pretty much what I was going to say. I really miss the day when the trademark files make me excited.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

While i hate being negative, i can only see this being a re release of Drakengard or even a new Mobile game.T_T

    • brian

OR BOTH, since that game has a (pretty old) mobile version.
So maybe an upgrade to that version with social game aspects.
      That depresses me.

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

I love Drakengard, but we all know it will be a mobile game xD.

Will Square bring back the amoral sociopathic hero who grins when he kills people as well as having a “thing” with his sister?

    • http://www.facebook.com/InternationalGamer1 Christopher Bosak

      you mean CAIM from Drakengard.

  • Elvick

Hopefully we get a real CC some day. Like the gamecube game, only with online…

Anyhoo, this will probably be some mobile/social game. Even if it manages to be something interesting, at the rate SE is going we probably won’t even get it.

  • Draparde

what i would give for a new Crystal chronicles game…all of them (except crystal bearers) where very addicting and fun imo X_x

    • http://www.facebook.com/stale.laastad Ståle Laastad

      The Gamecube one was magical!

      • Draparde

it was! i put so many hours into that one X_x. though i put many more into the Handheld ones. (due to more friends being into it with me at the time)

it would just make my year if they took the best from both and made a mindblowingly great CC game….i can only wish though lol

        • http://www.facebook.com/stale.laastad Ståle Laastad

it must have been a blast with multiplayer!

(apparently I’ll have to be super explicit and not infer anything if I want my comments to not get deleted)

You have a few too many words in there. Crystal Bearers is a great game.

      • Draparde

ooh, i didint mean it was bad, sorry for the misunderstanding, i just never got addicted to it like the others XD. i could have worded that better.

(i was wondering about that. said i got a reply from you but it took me to another one of your posts, i was so confused lol)

I think most people are safely assuming these to be social-game shovelware. . . it’s sad, but we’re all too accustomed to the idea of these companies wasting our time with games that no one asked for ;/

    • epy

And it’s not just any company. It’s Square-Enix! Now all we need is a flashy countdown teaser site.

          • omegagemo

Yeah I hear ya. FFF was a pretty unique place on the internet, haven’t really found anything like it since. Haven’t gone back to GT since, considering settling for IGN if I get really desperate but we’ll see. At least I’ll get to see you around here it seems, so that’s somethin! :D

While i do enjoy IOS gaming, the IAP concept and made in a day quality of some of the SE games has produced is wtf.

  • http://www.esterior.net/ Endless History

I might be the only one who would be super worried about this, regarding Drakengard. Afterall, Cavia’s dead. I don’t know if I’d enjoy a Drakengard game without Cavia’s influence. :(

    • Zakai

thx for the spoil …. you did great …

      • http://www.esterior.net/ Endless History

It’s true, though. People need to remember that because Nier didn’t sell that well, that Cavia fell apart.

I don’t like being the bearer of bad news, but this is also a ‘dose of reality’ really… ESPECIALLY when such an innovative team’s works are brought up.

EDIT: Better I spoil it like this, though, than letting people get their hopes up to find it be a social iOS game with ‘Drag-On Dragoon’ slapped on it for hopefully more sales*.

*I can wish, right? ‘Drakengard,’ get it more sales?. ._.

        • Zakai

I agreed … it’s just sad we are losing more and more great rpgs and by the same time talented studios. We have only one solution show them that we are not interested to spend our money on social games !

          • http://www.esterior.net/ Endless History

While that’s a good solution, that’s not the only one. Instead of using a lot of energy dodging social games, we should be social about the games we love. Spread the word about them and make people more interested in buying them.

If they’re on an easily pirated system (I’m looking at you, PSP), then try to convince people to actually buy the games to support the devs/pubs.

        • Alberto Maytorena

Regardless of the success or fail of Nier, Cavia was going down anyways.

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

Expecting more iOS games from Square…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

I wish Square would just forget about the iOS. It will never be as good as a PROPER console like the PS3.

      • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

Well they won’t. Since iOS is cheap, easy, and profitable to make things for.

        • neo_firenze

Microsoft sold 5.9 million Xbox 360s in the Sep-Dec 2012 quarter. In that same time period, Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones, and 22.9 million iPads. I think I get why publishers are interested in the iOS market!

As for Peeka’s comment about Android, I think the market fragmentation is the reason it will never really be close to iOS for gaming. Apple has a few hardware models to support, Android is the wild freaking west. Really hard to develop a consistent experience with devices that are wildly different in specs. And for every popular high end phone like a Galaxy III, there are a ton of budget Android phones that are, frankly, crap. That inflates the number of Android devices, but includes some that really aren’t meaningful competitors to stuff like an iPhone for gaming.

      • Peeka Chu

Actually, you should expect more Android/ iOS. Have you seen the latest sales numbers and watched Apple stumbling at the top? Their competitors, particularly Samsung are ruthlessly stealing market and mindshare.

+1! FFIX is my favorite game ever and I thought there was something new……….

What you guys dont know is that a mobile version of drakenguard already exists (Google it)

  • Jack

Okay, why the hell is Garnet from Final Fantasy IX in the thumbnail? I seriously thought a Final Fantasy IX remake or sequel/preqeul was announced. I almost had a heart attack……..

  • Jack

    Am I blind? I see Garnet from Final Fantasy IX…. ;~;

  • http://twitter.com/Nates4Christ Nate

It’s always good to hear about new games.

  • Peeka Chu

DRAKENGARD? Literally one of my favourite series of last gen and this. I’d take any distribution of the old games or a continuation of the series. But didn’t the development team (Cavia) dissolve? I think the creator is working on mobile games now.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

I really hope they do something with the Drakengard series. I really loved those games when they first came out. If they do do something with it, I hope they get Kari Wahlgren to sing the opening again. Her singing Growing Wings (original) was beautiful. =^_^=

  • SirRichard

“A subtitle for a new Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles game, perhaps?”

Just have to play with my heart, don’t you.

They’re probably gearing up for a Drakengard PS2 Classics release (unless that’s happened already, but I don’t think it has). And I’d put money on that other one being an iOS/Android game, but who knows, maybe Square will surprise us.

  • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

Well Cavia doesn’t exist anymore, so…

  • Aunna Terrell

I’m guessing Princess and the Legendary Ring is a mobile otome game. It has that ring to it~ It screams girl’s dating game!

  • Alberto Maytorena

    Drakengard!

  • Makapixel

considering the entity known as “cavia” is no more I doubt it’s a new Drakengard.

    • Tatsuya1221

That doesn’t mean alot actually, square-enix owns the drag-on dragoon name, as such they could technically make a third game, it just wouldn’t be made by cavia, heck S-E could technically release a xenogears 2 if they wanted, whether the original team members were involved or not.

      • Makapixel

it does mean something actually. If cavia isn’t making the game then it wouldn’t be Drakengard. Just in name only. Plus I wouldn’t trust Square Enix to make an egg breakfast lest they burn it by leaving it on the stove for too long. So I sure as hell wouldn’t trust them with anything cavia’s done.

        • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

“If cavia isn’t making the game then it wouldn’t be Drakengard.”

The creator of Etrian Odyssey left Atlus after the release of the first game, yet it didn’t stop the series from developing further in the hands of Atlus. Depending on the capabilities of the development team, the possibility goes both ways. Let’s not jump to conclusions from the get go.

          • Dick Mountainjoy

That’s a totally different story. Drakengard has a really… unique grim tone and style. Etrian Odyssey is a fairly standard fantasy JRPG fare.

That’s like saying an Eraserhead Sequel by a different director could be good because people liked the Saw Sequels.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

No, it’s not. My point still stands: What matters is whether members of the development team understand how to replicate the previous game’s essence. Changes in staff aren’t a rare occurrence in the industry.

          • Dick Mountainjoy

But Studios with as unique a tone as Cavia is. That’s like saying any old team could emulate Suda 51/Grasshopper’s style.

EDIT: You are making a facile argument. Emulating a style isn’t enough, if you don’t have that creative spark, you end up with a game like Bioshock 2.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I wouldn’t count Grasshopper’s games as a rule as much as an exception, mainly because they try so hard to be precisely that. As for whether a style could be replicated or not: Like I said above, the possibility goes both ways.

          • Makapixel

What’s truly sad is this is a common thought among many people. Games are just names only. If the game has the same name it must have the same quality. People be damned.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Then your definition of “people” is very confined, only to creators and not other people that contributed to each project. If you as a consumer think you can comprehend the essence of a game, I don’t think it’ll be particularly harder for people used to making games. The only question is whether they’ll try or not.

          • Makapixel

Yes it would be like going to a movie directed by your favorite director. You are going to the movie because you trust them. Another example would be like playing the Kingdom Hearts phone game that wasn’t made by Square Enix but according to you if it has the name “Kingdom Hearts” it maintains the same quality.

The fact that you keep arguing against this is really troublesome. You are saying no matter what, even if you have a completely different team that if they had a road map and the name they could completely make Drakengard or hell even Nier? With none of the same people? Are you god darn delusional? That’s like saying someone other than Swery65 could have made Deadly Premonition. You have issues dude. Why do you have a chip on your shoulder for name brands?

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Not once did I say “same quality”; that’s just something you’re insisting that I said. I’m willing to look at a different team’s work for what it is instead of being close-minded; title names are hardly anything beyond semantics. And there has been many examples of installments in a series not carrying the same essence, or being made by different people yet not feeling out of place. Like I said earlier, the possibility goes both ways, and I’m open to it.

I said all my points in previous comments clearly. If you didn’t understand them, no point in me repeating either. And the tone you’re taking is not appreciated on this site; read the rules [here]. If you take that tone with another user, it’ll be a warning.

          • Makapixel

You clearly have no respect for the individuals that create the games you seem to love. Changing a games staff will drastically change the game. Every single thing about the game will change. Can you guess why? I’ll give you a hint. People are unique.

Ergo if different people make a game in the same series you’ll get a different game. Compare Square Soft to Square Enix. Hell compare past companies to the present. The people who made the games what they are have left and moved to other companies. Follow the person, not the company, and not the name. For gods sake use your head a little bit. Follow Sakaguchi, not final fantasy, follow Keiji Inafune, not Capcom, follow Hideki Kamiya not Devil May Cry.

When people say add a little love to say like a recipe or something it’s not just some made up bullshit catch all term. It means add that unique flavor that can come purely only from that one person. Maybe they have a different technique for mixing, maybe they sprinkle the salt ever so carefully so it’s evenly spread out, maybe they just have a way of preparing the food, or a way of handling it. Something that is unique to that person.

With that said without cavia there will never be another Drakengard or Nier PERIOD.

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Spare me the presumptions and ad hominem. I respect famous creative individuals; but I don’t worship them to the point that I become close-minded to other lesser people trying their hand at expressing their own ideas – not because I expect perfection, but because they could use a chance too.

If Square wanted to make a new Drakengard, I’ll think of it as just a game in the series made with ideas from a different team.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Also for Fire Emblem series here if you remember.^_^
The creator leave the company and yet we see how succesfull Fire Emblem now.^_^

          • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

There you go. And I didn’t want to go back to the topic so soon, but: Devil May Cry too; in fact, the most-praised DMC3 was made without Kamiya’s involvement. It depends on whether the people making the follow-ups understand the game or not. I get that the original creators have a clear vision of what they want their games to be, but in a group project like making a game, I don’t believe for one second that they’re the only ones who understood the game enough to be able to make improvements.

  • OverlordZetta

    PS2 Classic, maybe?

  • neo_firenze

Right now it’s a bit under 10 years since Drakengard was released. In both Japan and the US, trademarks last for 10 years and then need to be renewed. Good chance this is just S-E renewing their mark so they don’t lose the name.

Though the idea of a digital re-release wouldn’t be too crazy.

  • flamindogpoo

But… Drakengard isn’t a prequel to Nier… One of Nier’s endings links the two, and the sword from Drakengard is in the World of the Recycled Vessel DLC.

Regardless, Nier is already owned by Square, but the company that made the game still went under, so I highly doubt a sequel will come to Drakengard.
