One Of Sega’s Oldest Strategy RPGs Is Coming To 3DS Virtual Console

By Spencer . January 30, 2013 . 2:32am

crystalw01Crystal Warriors or, as it’s known in Japan Ariel: Crystal Legend, is an internationally developed strategy RPG from Sega. The game came out for Game Gear in 1991, a year before Shining Force.

Crystal Warriors will be re-released as a 300 yen ($3.30) Virtual Console download in Japan on February 6. Sega marketed the game in North America with a fantasy artwork montage…

… but in Japan the game had super deformed character art drawn by Kugatsuhime. Take a look at concept art for Ariel and other characters below.

Yeeeees! It’s been a while since I played that game. That was one of the fun games I played on the Game Gear.

  • Ladius

This was my first tactical JRPG, I’m almost moved to see it again after so many years. Crystal Warriors gave me lots of fond memories, it was surprisingly good for its time and the fact I perceived it as something unique made it even better.

  • Tails the Foxhound

I love anime artwork from the late ’80s early ’90s era. :D

I also love it when SEGA shows off its Japanese colours. Things like this are a reminder that yes, SEGA is very much a Japanese company.

Not to say that SEGA shouldn’t seem like one. But this is the company, after all, that set up their office in the United States, did more to appeal to the West during the 16-Bit era than Nintendo. And, well, anyway.

Gosh, what I wouldn’t give for another Ariel game. It’d be perfect to go with the reboot-ing of the Shining Force franchise which *is* happening.

I can’t believe that i just see this game artwork yesterday when i am looking for Sega fanart and today Sega will release this game for 3DS E-Shop.
Ohh boy. Sega you really know how to please this old Sega fanboy here.^_^

  • FFmax

Yeesh, that U.S boxart is almost as as bad as Suikoden 1’s.

  • CirnoLakes

You know, SEGA makes a lot of bad and a lot of good decisions.

SEGA, this is what we like to see. Keep doing things like this. Heck, I’d love another entry in the series. And without pulling a CnD like you did with the Shining Force stuff. Put out a new game in the franchise, for new systems, let me buy it on Steam like I bought NiGHTS into dreams… and I will pretty darned happy.

I mean throwing money at you happy. You should do it, SEGA. Even though I know they’ll never do it…

  • Wow, I barely remember owning this game. This and Defenders of Oasis were my first RPGs.

Hopefully, Sega won’t try to modernize it like they did with the Shining series.

  • Alphabet Soup

I love seeing the difference in artwork on older games. Of course, when you actually play and it’s 16-bit, I suppose it doesn’t make a difference. :D

  • ronin4life

So I take it this has a decent chance of coming over here right?
    Looks interesting…^o^

    • WarioFan63

Oh yes, Sega is usually pretty good about releasing localized VC games elsewhere in the world.

  • puchinri

The US always did and still does have a hard time advertising things without being entirely misleading; and especially if a female protag is involved, heaven forbid they emphasize that point at all (heh, Disney especially is a hilarious example of that).

It looks like a fun game, and I hope we see it on VC here too.

  • That art is adorable.

  • Mmmm, retro-y.
