How You Change Classes In Fire Emblem: Awakening And Why It’s Useful

By Laura . February 2, 2013 . 5:00pm

Fire Emblem: Awakening contains highly customizable unit upgrading and jumping, which are achieved through Master Seals and Second Seals, respectively.

Once a unit reaches level 10, he or she can use a Master Seal to upgrade to the next class. Some units can be promoted to one of two different classes—for example, the Myrmidon can become either an Assassin or a Sword Master. Luckily, you can always compare your prospective stat changes and what skills you’ll learn on the bottom screen.

Second Seals, though, allow your unit to change class once they’ve reached at least level 10 (or, if they’ve achieved Advanced Class). The new class will start at level 1. Any unit can use this, but which class they can change to is limited. For example, the Cavalries can hop into Archer or Myrmidon classes. Even the Lord can hop classes, becoming a Cavalier or an Archer. In addition, you can use the Second Seal on your Advanced Class unit to “promote” them to their previous class at level 1.

(On the other hand, your Tactician can change into literally any class, from Cavalier to Barbarian to Wyvern Rider. Oh, the options.)

It looks as though there are two main purposes for this other than simple unit preferences. The first is that because each unit learns two skills as they level up, this will allow you to collect more skills. For example, turning your unit into a Thief will automatically grant him or her the Locksmith skill, allowing them to open any door or chest without a key. Then, if you decide you’d like your original unit back, you can transform the unit back and still keep the Locksmith skill.

The other purpose is to allow easier maximization of stats. Because you start at level 1 every time you switch, you will always have the opportunity to level up. Hit the maximum level of 20?  Just use a Seal and jump class! Maximized your Advanced Class unit? Use the Seal to jump back to level 1 of your current class while keeping your stats intact.

Something to be noted, though, is that every unit does have their own natural stats, so some classes may just not suit them, and class-specific bonuses will be lost between jumps, so sometimes there will be stat decreases after using the Seal.

2 days left !!! kinda wish amazon didn’t F up my order T.T (gotta wait an extra 2 days)

on a side note; can tact change classes or is he/she stuck at that ?

    • On the other hand, your Tactician can change into literally any class, from Cavalier to Barbarian to Wyvern Rider. Oh, the options.

      • Raltrios

Technically not true, though is it? A Male Tactician cannot be a Pegasus Knight, correct?

        • Yes, I just checked. The male tactician can’t be a Pegasus Knight.

          • Raltrios

Wouldn’t imagine he could become a Bride, either ;)

      • Ferrick

man ishaan… now i definitely can’t wait 4 more days till it comes (unless if i try to order from gamestop, which is rather impossible since its empty there at the moment T.T)

        • 3DS shop.

          • Ferrick

bad internet connection, and i prefer physical media over digital download that would be locked on the device (since 3ds doesn’t have something like the psn system), and i paid for the game over amazon already

      • Ispheria

Can the Tactician turn into the class that turns into a dragon? i don’t want my tact. to be that class…but i think it be weird if he could

        • Arrei

No one can reclass into a special class like Lord, Manakete, Taguel, and so on, unless they inherit it or are that class to begin with. By that vein Avatar’s the only one who can choose the Tactician class for a good while.

Avatar is able to have a Manakete child if he pairs with one of the three other Manaketes, though.

  • Manuel Antony Marcano

Ah Donny, you lovely man. I got so upset trying to recruit him, but he was absolutely worth it.

  • Haseyo

So much intel for this game, so little time.

  • Laith Rem

As an extra note, you want an ability that lets you get another turn after killing another unit. It’s exclusive to women so… (There’s a trick to get it to some men buuuut…)

    • Linhua

      … tell me more, I say… MOAR!

.-. No seriously… what is this ability about…?

… it must be a new one… and it sounds a bit too powerful of a skill for powerhouse units to wield…

      • Laith Rem

Yeah Galeforce which is a skill you get with Dark Fliers at level 15. DF is a female restricted class but, and this is minor spoilers but still have to warn, the inheritance skill system can pass any skill. ANY skill. (You can see where this is going =D)

        • Linhua

          … oho~ I see indeed!

… thank you for the spoiler-free intel.

… I don’t consider the whole bearing child and inheritance thing to be spoilers, but more of a feature.

… now to be sure… are these ‘Dark Fliers’ that one Dark Pegasus class i’ve been seeing…?

          • Laith Rem

Those are indeed dark fliers. The name is the localized one.

  • YoshEE

2 more day til release of Awakening. So worth to be late for class for this. xD

  • Ayaka

Everytime I see a new article about FE Awakening – everytime – I experience something between good and bad. This game surely is so good. Not having it yet is so bad. You guys definitely know how to stimulate all of my heart.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I am having the same feeling here.T_T It is like, we know this game is so good but, the fact that we can’t even play the game is torturing here.T_T

      • I don’t mean to twist the knife, but I am playing it at the moment and all I can say is that this game is pure goodness! :p

    • You don’t know pain! I don’t even have a 3DS yet!

  • Miralizmis

    … Sigh…
    6 days till Awakening… for me…

    • Try waiting till April, then you may complain :D

      • Miralizmis

        Yeah, you’re right… :T
But, it just sucks when they promise you you’ll be getting it on the 31st, and then they tell you it won’t be getting in till “like the 8th”.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Grrrrrr. Why can’t tomorrow came faster.T_T

  • Ben Sylvia

I look forward to 5 hours uninterrupted playing this Monday.

    • Detrimont

      wait, only 5 hours?

  • Cant wait! I can pick it up during work since one of my meeting spots is in the mall! :D

  • Dolly

pft you guys can’t wait a day ._. europe has to wait till may31st to june 5 (tentative date stamps). yeah. think on that for a second :c. nether the less i am so excited i’m sobbing inside. the amount of customisation this game has, the graphic overhaul update. the teeny little ingame cut scene splices. it’s pretty much perfect on paper. i can’t wait to traul some english streams to tide me over.

    • $29082171

Didn’t NoE say April for the release date?

  • Raltrios

Damn it… I’m working in the middle of the day when it’s released. I preordered it, so I should be guaranteed the artbook, correct? I won’t have to worry about them running out before I get there in the evening?

    • You shouldn’t had any problem but try and go there as soon as possible.

      • Raltrios

Perhaps I should try and get out there before work, even though it’s in the opposite direction. Well, I’ll call tomorrow and see if they broke street date and just haven’t called me about it. If so, I’ll pick it up ASAP.

  • JustThisOne

My creepy dream of creating a self-insert Wyvern Knight can finally happen. *__*

    • And unrestricted reclassing! This is literally my dream Fire Emblem!

      • Arrei

Well, there still are gender restrictions on a few classes.

Can’t be a male pegasus knight in a short skirt, for one.

        • True, but I’m talking in the lines of not being restricted or (majorly) penalized in how many times a unit can be reclassed.

      • Christopher Nunes

This will be my first Fire Emblem… and I’m so looking forward to it! ^_^

I played the demo and loved it (though I hate how only the MALE tactician is available only with no customization options… at least give me the female one too as she’s right there!).

Sadly I missed out on pre-ordering it but I hope they’ll get more copies soon this week or else I might have to digitally get it!

  • Prinnydoom

And this is what will make your characters broken as heck as i said before

    • XiaomuArisu

You say it like its a bad thingXD

      • Prinnydoom

Its not thats whats great about it ^__^

  • fireemblembeast

God damn it, why can’t this release today, so I don’t have to go through school and waiting until my mom gets home from work at like 6 to get this?! >:I
I better not have a lot of homework…

    • YoshEE

I feel the same way too!!

  • Jay

Oh man, I am such a newb to this series. Any advice?

    • Ferrick

for one, try not to get anyone killed on your group

      • Jay

        Duly noted. :) Thank you.

    • Then this just might be the perfect game to pick up. The series was infamous for its rule of permanently losing a character when they die; if that’s a stress for you, start with Casual Mode. (Difficulties can be chosen separately.)

      • Jay

I preordered from EB Games and they let the preorders have the game early and casual mode is the one I started with anyway because I am new to the series. :) I’m just working on getting my party leveled up so I can continue with the story. It’s challenging for me but enjoyable. Thank you! ^^

    • fireemblembeast

      Use the tutorials! ^_^
I remember when I first played FE and I used them…they’re really helpful if you read them all!

      • Jay

I’ve actually used some of the tutorials. I’m glad that they’re easy to understand plus it really lets you learn as you play. ^.^

  • Istillduno

I am trying to push my money through the monitor now, why is it not working?

Well, will be waiting a little longer being in Europe but definitely grabbing this, can count the number of 3DS games worth getting hype for on one hand, but this seems to be adding to the number.

  • YoshEE

I heard that Awakening going to be delay. Is it true? Please I hope not.

    • Herok♞

its not true unless you ordered from Amazon where they stated they are having shipping problems.

      • YoshEE

I pre order the game at GameStop and I heard they will get the game on friday.

        • Herok♞

Well GameStop should have it tommorrow but they did sell out ahead of time I believe so it may or maynot effect you, if you got the normal your game is in preorder call then you should be fine.

          • YoshEE

            Thanks for the advice! :D

  • Question: Are the Seals used for class changing heavy on your character’s funds, or did they make it so you can change classes as much as you want?

Another Question: How does the grinding aspect work? Can I just go back to earlier chapters and train my weaker units right off the bat?

    • You can reclass any character to any of the classes they can be assigned to, and you can do it however many times you want. (If you want to get technical, there’s a small hidden value that serves as a partial limiter for EXP yield, but it will never block out a character’s EXP yield completely. So, for all intents and purposes, there are no limits on training your characters.)

For grinding, there are random overworld skirmishes as well as SpotPass enemy teams you can download. Check [here] for details, if you don’t mind some game mechanics spoilers.
