imageSony Computer Entertainment just announced a price cut for the PlayStation Vita in Japan. The system will be 19,980 yen ($213) starting on February 28. The system was 24,980 yen for a Wi-Fi model and 29,980 yen for a 3G model when the system launched in Japan.

The price cut applies to 3G and Wi-Fi PlayStation Vita models in Japan.

… why even have wifi models anymore then?

    • I personally prefer my Wi-Fi model– I have no use in paying for 3G, and I find the limitations on it to be useless for what I’d mainly want a connection for.

I actually think the prices being the same are because they haven’t been selling the 3G models enough to justify them being more expensive, anymore. No one will pay the extra money for a feature they don’t want to pay even more for! But that’s just my opinion on it.

      • Onizuka Gio Hikari

yeah i just use my 4G phone wireless hotspot :D so no need for 3G Vita lol

    • Eric Harris

because some of us prefer to save money and will never use 3g 4g or whatever. You have to pay additional money each month for internet service fee aswell. No thank you.

      • ronin4life

But only if you want to. Otherwise it works the same as wifi only model.

        • The WiFi model doesn’t have the option to accept a 3g sim card if you choose to ever get one.

    • I wouldn’t want to pay for a internet plan. I don’t own one and have no urge to get one anytime in the next few years, but when or if I finally do, I wouldn’t use it to play online so I don’t care about a always on internet service I have to pay for.

I’m watching the stream right now and… they’re just relaying information we already know about… they just pulled in keiji inafune, which is great, but we’re waiting for something new…

  • Do the same for the rest of the world and cut the memory card prices by at least half and you might be onto something, Sony.

I’m sure that the West will get its price-drop announcement on Wed; or shortly thereafter. Rarely does one region get a hardware discount and another does not. The Vita is made with off the shelf mobile components, so I expect that they are making a return on the hardware now – considering how fast that sector shrinks components and evolves.

      • I would certainly hope so. It makes absolutely no sense for it to be as expensive as it is while the 3DS undercuts it by so much and has a larger library.

        • Mr_SP

…Other than the fact that the Vita is a more powerful system with higher graphical resolution? People don’t complain about the Wii being cheaper than the PS3.

    • sd28

this and some system sellers would be nice though I still believe it needs built in memory

    • Oltheros

I agree, the mem cards are like $2/gb right now. 32gb card should be like $40 max

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

i was right!!! good to see glad i waited lol

  • ragingmerifes

Cutting the price in the same week when more information about FFXHD and Dragon’s Crown come. Clever, Sony.

  • Neutron15

this will only be despoiled by mankind

  • Fango

I have seen retailers selling the vita on sale for $200 on a regular basis…..

  • Göran Isacson

Pricedrop is always nice. Just gonna have to wait and see how the pricedrop will affect us here in the West, and especially here in Sweden. I do believe we’ll see SOME pricedrop, but I do not know if it will go as low as in Japan…

Things to expect in the next month:
Vita sales in Japan will immediately tank this week.
Sony will announce a similar Vita price cut for other regions on 2/20 (along with whatever they have to say about the PS4bis).
Vita sales in Japan will surge in the following week, surpassing Wii U.
People will invariably see this as some huge revelaiton for Wii U.
Japanese Vita will continue outselling Wii U throughout March.*
Japanese Vita may continue outselling Wii U into April.*
(*This depends on software sales of Game & Wario, Soul Sacrifice & God Eater 2, I’d say outcome likely.)
Japanese 3DS will continue to pretend to be it’s own solar system.

    • Peace Legacy

Is the last sentence and the awkward attempt at using the revelaiton joke (beating a really really dead horse) really necessary?
The prediction seems fair and all, but there just seems to be too much hatred in this post to make it seems remotedly objective

      • Tails the Foxhound

Yes, I like saying “revelaitons”, I think it’s funny. I love the game though so take from that whatever you want. Not sure what you’re talking about with the hatred though.

    • Andres Pena

umm pretty sure a $40 dollar price drop isnt going to magically sell the system, even with some decent games coming out, and last time i checked even the 3ds xl out sold the vita and thats just a bigger 3ds :p

      • Tails the Foxhound

It will go up, it even spiked when the Blue and Red colors came out. This is a new color, a price drop and three new games, one of which is a Tales (remake). It’s near impossible for it to NOT go up. Now the extent to which it actually does is debatable.

    • Guest

Are we living in the same reality?

      • Tails the Foxhound

Yes? I’d say this is pretty likely.

  • Ethan_Twain

An aggressive price drop is good! They didn’t show off any software that will sell that many systems (particularly outside Japan) but this is absolutely a good start. Just because the PS Vita hasn’t transformed into heavyweight competition for the 3DS overnight is no reason to get down on it – these are necessary steps to have taken.

  • eilegz

price droping a good first step, now we need MORE GAMES and drop the price of the memory….

  • Going to be fun to see the results in Media Create. Will only show the results from Feb 28-Mar 3, but between the price cut, the new color, the new bundle and the trinity of Ninja Gaiden, PSO2 and Senran Kagura, I expect the system to explode.

  • Wasn’t the price cut around 10,000 yen for the 3G model?

  • Saw this price cut coming, so hopefully in the US, the Vita will at least be priced at around $200.

  • VeroC11

I wonder if this will mean a lower quality build?
The 3DS did get cheaper screens that look warmer after the price cut, so it makes me wonder.
