Dreamfall Chapters’ New Location, Europolis, Depicts A Cyberpunk Europe

By Ishaan . February 23, 2013 . 6:00pm

Red Thread Games have shown off a new location from Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey, Europolis. Europolis is a key location in Stark, the series’ world of science (as opposed to Arcadia, the world of magic), and is a European city-state covering the former independent nations of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands. Take a look at it in the video below:

Red Thread Games say that the cyberpunk-esque Europolis is “not just the dark heart of Europe; it is the filthy bowels and bloodied entrails of Europe.” They add that all footage shown in the video above is real-time in-game footage, running in their prototype on the Unity engine, which is being used for development.

Oh man The Longest Journey was one of my favorite PC games so I’m so excited! Time to donate to that Kickstarter!

  • Ethan_Twain

This is becoming a trend, isn’t it? Remeber Me, Cyberpunk 2077, and Dreamfall. Deus Ex Human Revolution kicked it off, and now we’ve got a new video game cliche in the making. Personally it’s an aesthetic I like so this suits me just fine :)

    • Rohan Viajar

no it’s not a trend. just really coincidental. haha

I mean if you played The Longest Journey (not Dreamfall. I didn’t get to play that one yet so I wouldn’t know about Dreamfall) they already had some Cyber punk aspects in that game.

      • Nicholas Gatewood

Yeah, and Cyberpunk 2077 certainly isn’t because of any trend. Remember Me might be the result of a trend, though, it doesn’t seem too original- mostly an amalgamation of stuff like Deus Ex and Inception.

Love the look of the city, but the main character’s model looks… off to me. I don’t know why.

you’re not the only one.having played dreamfall, i think what bugs me the most is how plain the shapes on her face are compared to how they used to be. maybe its just early, maybe itll be animated better.

      • Rohan Viajar

I’m actually okay with the plain-ness. I mean if we were comparing it to what is used to be.. TLJ April Ryan.. man.. those graphics back in the day. haha

but if it got better that’d be good too.
let’s just hope for the best, and not be overly whiny (not saying you are) in the end. :D

Funcom games were usually very attractive. Even Pocahontas on the Genesis haves some absurdly big sprites with extremely fluent movements.

    • CirnoLakes

I haven’t really watched the video, but she looks scared.

In fact I came in here just to make this joke originally:
      “She looks scared.

I hope she’s going to be okay.”

They don’t seem very good at facial design.

They need to redesign the character art from the ground up, go for something more stylized, and less Unreal Engine ugly. I take one look at that face and lose all interest in the game.

She can be plain and still look good from an art standpoint, but if that’s what they’re going for they’ve failed.

I have to wonder why they didn’t use the Secret World and Age Of Conan engine. Add better animations and you’d have one of the best looking games out there (Age Of Conan is so pretty!).
If it wasn’t for the character models and animations The Secret World could be one of the most atmospheric and absolutely gorgeous games ever made. There’s such a ridiculous amount of detail to every locale (After all, many puzzles involve checking everything in an specific area) and the attention to the lore, plot and multiple influences to horror and fantasy media (Comics, games, movies, books, etc.) is absolutely overwhelming.

Dreamfall Chapters is being independently developed and funded by Red Thread Games so they don’t have aces to the engine. Unless they don’t pay Funcom a lot of money fore it witch they don’t have.

I just finished Dreamfall yesterday and loved it. I like Zoes old face though, it’s strange here o.o

  • Nicholas Gatewood

Wait, this game is actually happening? For real this time? Jesus, I played the heck out of The Longest Journey recently(got more than halfway through it, a major bug prevents me from progressing any further since I’m stuck in an area and didn’t pick up one item) and decided not to play Dreamfall yet because I wanted to finish TLJ first, but the fact that this is actually happening is exciting to me. I hope it launches on consoles, because I kinda quit PC gaming a little over a year ago. Vita or PS4 support would be so awesome.

They already retched there original goal on kickstarter so the game is getting funded. Red Thread Games seems to be interested in other platforms if they get enough money and interest (especially tablets I think) so make a pledge if you like to see it.

And witch item is it, never experienced it myself and the only thing I can think of is Costapel Guybrush eye.

Looks pretty interesting! The character concepts are <3. I'm currently playing The Longest Journey and can't wait for this one to come out.
