Skullgirls Fundraiser Over $200,000; More Characters Revealed

By Ishaan . February 27, 2013 . 10:00am

Skullgirls’ fundraiser has managed to rake in over $200,000 so far, with 29 days left to go until people won’t be allowed to contribute any more, and developer, Lab Zero, have revealed more possible characters that could be added to the game. We saw a few of these on Monday, and here are the ones Lab Zero have revealed since:

The Skullgirls fundraiser will need to hit $600,000 in contributions for any of these characters to make it into the game. Once that goal is reached, Lab Zero will allow fans to vote on which one they’d like to see created. Before that happens, however, they have two other characters to get out of the way.

Since the $175,000 goal has been crossed, Squigly, the character currently in development is fully funded, complete with her own stage, music track from Michiru Yamane, and story mode. Next on the list is Big Band, who will be added at the $375,000 mark, should contributions reach that figure.

    Stanley Stanley Stanley!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu of Spades

I see Dr. Paradigm in him for some reason.

      • Tails the Foxhound

Oh goodness, someone remembers that game! (It’s actually my favorite in the series, because I’m terrible at traditional fighters.)

        • Göran Isacson

While I haven’t played Guilty Gear 2 I did watch a lets play, and I must admit Dr Paradigm is a favorite of mine. Awesome dragon scientists, I guess. They’re my weakness.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu of Spades

I am no chicken breast, sir!

      • Funky Bottoms

        from Street Sharks?

  • Shadowman

    YES! YES! YES!

  • vileBrenman

Lol there’s a shark scientist!and i thought this was an all girl fighter i guess shark men are invited

    • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Considering Big Band is also male, they’re obviously trying to expand that. Apparently male characters have been highly requested for the game!

      • SirTeffy

Male characters have always been planned, it’s just that none of them made it into the initial release. All the characters they are unveiling were PLANNED to be included in the roster over 3 games, but they had to severely cut the roster for the first game to get it released, and now it looks like the other 2 games won’t happen.

      • Jake_Was_Here

Alex Ahad’s intention has always been to switch around the gender ratio from most other fighting games — instead of four or five male characters for every female, Skullgirls will have it the other way around.

    *takes one look at Ileum*
    NOPE. NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE. NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE.

On a related note, Lab Zero’s amazing character designs are a double edged sword. On one hand, there’s some damn good characters that are being showcased there and are (quite possibly) going to be up for voting. On the other hand, all those awesome designs means I’ll probably end up being the only one voting for Minette. :C
(Don’t get me wrong. Science Shark is AMAZING, but I’ve wanted a playable Minette ever since first seeing her in Ms. Fortune’s story mode!)

    • Xalsunwolf

You have my support for Minette!!!! I also however would like Leduc in game for the reason as you want Minette.

  • Triplicity

Is… is that a shark in a labcoat? Sorry, I was all sad that Minette wasn’t playable, but now this has to happen.

    • Hollowkoopa

If you look at one of the silhouettes there’s one very similar to Minette.

  • James Reilly

There gonna hit all the stretch goals at this rate and then some. 2nd day sure was slower then first day, but “slower” then 150k daily was over 50k daily. Thats not counting the pace picking up drastically within the last few days.

Also want Stanley, Annie, and Leduc

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Typically, the way Kickstarter-type campaigns tend to operate is, you see a large number of people contribute on the first couple of days, since those are the most devoted/enthused fans. Then, the contributions slow down once those guys have all pitched in, and pick up again closer to the deadline, as the people who meant to contribute but held off on doing it all line up to get their money in before the deadline comes and goes.

      • Jake_Was_Here

Keep in mind also that some of the donators are probably waiting for Thursday and Friday: Thursday because there’s a popular weekly Skullgirls stream on Thursdays run by Mike Z himself; and Friday because that’s when they get their paychecks.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

That, and if they’re looking for additional money from people not using Amazon Payments or outside the US, they open a PayPal for more contributions.

  • MrRobbyM

    Annie, Stanley and Leduc.

    • Xalsunwolf

That roles off the tongue quite nicely there.

  • mikanko

If he stops moving forward will Stanley suffocate?

    • MrRobbyM

      That reminds me.

If Spoink stops bouncing, it dies.

    Team Hive

  • Zonic505

    Shark scientist. That is awesome.

Props to the team for getting the funding they needed & more. Really hoping at this rate, we’ll get Big Band as well.

  • PowerOfTheFlamesIori

Stanley. 1000 times Stanley. He looks like a shark version of Dilbert.

  • Sergio Briceño

    It’s Ileum for me.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    D. Violet & Annie here! =^_^=

  • Asura

Big Band and Stanley better have jiggling crotch physics or else…
Though Stanley might need jiggling clasper physics, seeing as he’s a shark…

    • Solomon_Kano

      Jiggling fin physics?

      • Asura

The claspers may not wiggle too much on a shark preserved in formaldehyde, but I will let you know the results soon on a live shark held vertically and slightly shaken.

Seeing as how SG made breasts sway up and down when characters are merely STANDING IN PLACE, the lack of jiggling male genitalia physics would really betray one of the core… “concepts”… of the game.
Whoever doesn’t want jiggling crotch physics for the males is just whacked-out or grossly insecure and can’t handle both-way body ridiculousness.

        • Solomon_Kano

Hopefully they’ll recognize this gross disparity and include jiggling bicep physics as well.

          • Asura

Panzerfaust would be in dire need of jiggling biceps physics.

        • PowerOfTheFlamesIori

Breasts are made of fat. They’re kinda supposed to jiggle. Fat jiggles. :P And even standing in place, all fighting game characters bob up and down.

Besides, you don’t trade upper body fan service for lower body fan service. I’d say bicep and muscle jiggles would be a fair trade up for chest jiggles.

On top of all that, I don’t know any girl anywhere that likes to see jiggly male genitalia. Blech.

          • Asura

The stance jiggling is not quite proportional to the movement (in some cases there is just too much jiggle, or in the case of Parasoul it just appears when it shouldn’t with her exhale), but that may also have to do with the way the clothes unnaturally wrap around breasts in SG and due to the nanomachines present in the clothes the… well you get the point.

Male genitalia jiggling isn’t supposed to necessarily be fanservice targeted at females though. Bulging jiggling muscles does not attract females in general either. Those things are just to keep consistency between characters.

For female-centered fanservice, there would have to be nicely toned characters with their shirts unbuttoned and the other sort of stuff male models designed to appeal to females have. That would be nice too, but I have yet to see a design for that.

I love the interesting and whacky character designs of SG, but there’s no overcoming the fact that the entire adult cast of the initially released game (as well as Filia who I think is 16 or something) center heavily around highly prominent breast physics and panty shots made possible due to ridiculous outfit choices that do not match plausible outfit choices by people who expect to be in combat situations.

          • https://twitter.com/A_Beast_of_Prey Equinox K

You do realize that the creator behind the game likes monster girls and enjoys drawing them? Also I’ve seen far worse in other fighting games (and I know you have too), especially where the cast is predominately female and not a male character in sight.

          • Asura

I realize, and your point was…?

  • Solomon_Kano

Stanley. A shark scientist is the best scientist.

  • Zach Hodgson

Why isn’t Hive getting more love?! She’s so cool looking!!!

  • Sylveria

    Oh Ileum is disgusting looking…

    • Brandonmkii

      In a wonderful way.

    • https://twitter.com/A_Beast_of_Prey Equinox K

I actually prefer Double to Ileum, though I would use Ileum just to creep people out. Squish squish.

  • Suriel Cruz

That D.Violet looks like Alruna from Gaia Online. :/

    • https://twitter.com/A_Beast_of_Prey Equinox K

Well Aled did do the design for that item when he was still working the site, that and it was probably one of the inspirations for the game.

      • Suriel Cruz

        Ohhhh!!! :O

  • http://jromanrex.com/ Jesus Roman Leal

I think I’m one of the few who want Ileum in the game. At least Stanley has a lot of support so that is also fine.

    • raymk

No you aren’t, I however want them all.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    hIM

    • Solomon_Kano

      He’d be cool too.

    • JustThisOne

Fighting games need more tonfa move sets. :3

      • Göran Isacson

Especially tonfa who are also stethoscopes… or who at least look like stethoscopes.

  • Draparde

I’d love it if Feng got in, but i Hiiighly doubt she will XD.

    • JustThisOne

She’s basically next on the list. :3 She’s the silhouette that’s spinning plates.

      • Draparde

oh, i know. i mean i doubt she’ll get enough votes to be the third character lol.

        • JustThisOne

          Oh. :3 Well, while we’re on pipe dreams, I really want Venus. But she’s all the way near the end, and there are so many more fans for everyone else… ;__;

I’d love to see how the spinning plates get worked in to the move set.

          • Draparde

Yeah X_x, though i have to wonder, if the entire list was revealed, who would get the most votes lol

          • JustThisOne

I’d say Black Dahlia or Annie. Maybe Victoria. They’ve gotten more exposure than the other guys. :3 That’s my guess anyway.

  • CirnoLakes

    Annie for the win.

  • revenent hell

Im curious why they just dont do a Skull Girls 2 instead of fundraising for DLC charecters/stages. Make the game with the charecters not used in this one and advance the story in that and so forth. I realy dont grasp the point of it realy,I am not trying to be hatefull about it or anything but I realy dont get why they would go this rout over just making a second game other than mabey Autumn Games does not wish to? or cant afford to?…. Is this mabey stated anywhere?

I mean the game is cheap itself and even having DLC for it is kind of a surprise to me considering this, since the cheaper the game tends to be the “less” content I expect to get/get out of it….Thats not to say I expect a cheap game to be poopy or anything but I just dont expect DLC or anything for it.

    • PowerOfTheFlamesIori

Just because the game’s inexpensive, doesn’t mean it’s cheap to make. A hand drawn 2D fighter costs a colossal amount of money to make. They’d love to release a Skull Girls 2. But Skull Girls didn’t exactly fly off the digital shelves.

Doing this is a great way to convince Autumn to let them do a Skull Girls 2. They can show them that there’s a demand for the product.

      • revenent hell

Hmm I didnt think of that. I realy had no idea how Skull Girls did when it sold but I for one figured it would have done pretty decently,I mean realy you get quite a lot for such a little cost and the fighting is pretty good, and yes im aware just because a game is cheap dosent mean its cheap to make but if the publisher dosent have faith enough in its own property to even back up the DLC for it thats worrisome in itself to me for a veriety of reasons.
Though like you said mabey if faith is shown in this DLC a second game could appear from it………Im realy surprised more fighting game fans didnt buy it,im not a raging fan of fighting games but I do enjoy them once in a while and at the price of it I think it was a pretty good buy myself, though im realy not interested in any DLC for it myself.

      • mikanko

Skullgirls sales were actually not too shabby, but they were laid off almost immediately after the games release.

Last I heard the team behind SG hasn’t gotten to collect the money from the game they normally would have been able to if their publisher wasn’t in dire financial crisis from being sued (Over something which has not a lick to do with SG).

  • Göran Isacson

Stanley and those two doctor-looking people in my opinion.

Also, a conundrum- I have not bought this game yet, wanted to wait for my cash reserves to stabilize and now that they have… I wonder if I should donate 30 bucks to this and take the PC version, or if I should rather go for the PS3 version and donate a smaller sum to this. Decisions, decisions…

  • Edzo

i wish this game was on vita. they should crowd fund that instead

    • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

I never crowd-fund games, but I’d kick in $20 for a Vita version of Skullgirls.

  • http://alboreo.tumblr.com Alboreo

    Stanley looks like a bro.

  • Mavalex

    Stanley best shark scientist/doctor/professor ever

    • Testsubject909

      Hi-5!

  • Yuriangels

Stanley looks epic but does any one know how much they need or have they reach they’re goal?

    • Testsubject909

It’s in the article. 175,000 guaranteed a character detailed earlier. They’re hoping to meet 600,000

  • Kevin Schwarz

D.Violet and Hive. They look like the kind of character I like to use.

  • Christopher Nunes

I’m toss between Bloody Marie, Minette, or Leduc as the next playable character. But is it me or did they change Leduc’s design from his concept art? I preferred his concept art with the ninja-like cloak around his mouth (I believe). He looked a little bit cooler than his official art here.

I would love to donate more but I need to keep my money for Fate/Extra CCC and save towards my Ultimate Gaming Desktop PC I plan to build, but I did donate $30 to them.

Looking forward to seeing the fundraiser build so more and have all three new characters added to the game! And here’s to a possible sequel in the future! ^_^

  • http://Tree.com/ Busterblader

I really want annie and leduc that’d be flippin amazing

  • Ben Sylvia

    I like Hive.

Annie is just BEGGING for a Madotsuki palette.

Stanley and Leduc also look pretty boss.

  • Testsubject909

Stanley’d be nice. His stoic look makes me wonder what sort of oddly minimalistic or over the top crazy attacks he’ll have.

  • Pockystix

    everyone but the shark

  • Zarx

Annie and the buff male version of Heart Aino should suffice.

  • Warboss Aohd

    Stanley!

  • Linhua

… lolwow… this is about to get WAAYYY out of hand… XD

  • Detrimont

Marie still looks the best out of the currently shown vote for characters
