“Bionic Commando In Fish World” Cult Game Series Has A New 3DS Game

By Spencer . March 5, 2013 . 3:42pm

yumi1 Umihara Kawase is a video game series in Japan where you play as a girl with a pink backpack and a grappling hook. Yumi, as she was supposed to be called in the canceled US release, swings on walls and has to avoid out of place sea creatures. What made Umihara Kawase is the physics engine and the grappling hook’s elastic rope.

While we never got Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, the Umihara Kawase series will continue with Farewell Umihara Kawase. Yumi is 20 years old in this game and the title has some of the original developers working on it.

20 years old means the artist is gonna draw her with even bigger breasts.

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

And with that name, it looks like it’s the last one.

I’ve never been so pissed at Nintendo’s region locking.

  • Era Angelus

Wasn’t this one of the games featured on GameCenter GX? Least one of the original titles in this series. Shame we’re not getting this. Would be neat to play.

You never know! Nintendo might actually consider a release now– “canceled” was for the original Super Famicom game, after all, but it doesn’t discount chances for the 3DS version.

GCCX indeed did an episode, in which Inoko-MAX and Arino struggled endlessly with the seahorses

Umihara Kawase was the best game recommendation I ever got from the murky depths of 4chan’s /v/. Besides the quirky sea creatures and backgrounds that you encounter (a giant tadpole? WTF???), the platforming/puzzle action with her fishing rod-turned-grappling hook was really fun, and eventually fiendishly difficult.

Ideally, you’ll want to play the DS compilation, because that has both the original SNES version and the PSX sequel in it, and while the PSP version also has both games, I hear that the physics of that version is very “off” compared to the originals and DS remake.

If the 3DS remake turns out to be as good, it’ll be the first time I really wished the 3DS was region-free, just because it’s very playable even in Japanese (I don’t do JRPGs if they aren’t in English, I’m afraid)

Why did Natsume cancel the US release again? I don’t remember hearing about that, but this game had slipped my memory.

I just saw this one Gamecenter GX! It looks really entertaining! I personally think such a game would be better for an eShop release in the states given how well the popular platformers Mutant Mudds and Mighty Switch Force did.

Wow, that’s fascinating~. It’s a shame we never saw that here, but I’m always glad to hear about a sequel regardless (and I hope there’s still a chance for us to see it).

Umihara Kawase <3 lol that game seen about every game system

Umihara Kawase?! My god! Yes! YES! YEEESSS!!!
If you haven’t heard of it, go watch the Game Center CX episode of it on youtube. Then go drop your money off on amazon or ebay for a copy of the DS game! Do it now!

    I’ll be importing this one.

This game was frustrating as all get-out. Very addictive though. I loved seeing the giant fat tadpole boss for the first time.

Hey! I had the PSP version! It was my first import ever! I really did love the fact that I could play it with zero knowledge of Japanese back then! I would still recommend this to everyone!

… HUH. I’ve actually read about this one! Pretty old game, pretty darn out of left field that it would receive a sequel. Guess all that’s left now is if it’ll get released over here in any way, shape or form or if it stays a Japanese-only franchise.

    Wow, that’s great, and unexpected!

Umihara Kawase is a great series of unusual but very enjoyable platformers, and they have kinda unique mechanics.
I spent a lot of time on the DS compilation (and still spend a few hours on it) and I really recommend this import game!

Well, regarding this 3DS game, the region-lock will clearly be an annoyance (as it has always been since its implementation), as no Umihara game was released outside of Japan…
The screenshots in Hero of Legend ‘s link look quite ugly though…=O

one of my favorite games of all time. Definitely in my top 10 deserted island game list.
