Raidou Kuzunoha Returns, Atlus Is Reprinting The PS2 Devil Summoner Games

By Spencer . March 7, 2013 . 4:00pm

imageThose Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner games won’t be as rare anymore.Atlus, sources tell Siliconera, is reprinting Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon. [catches breath]

Both PlayStation 2 titles are set in the 1920s Japan and Atlus did an excellent job localizing these games even going as far to implement ’20s slang. Instead of the Press Turn system, the Devil Summoner games for PS2 have an action oriented combat system where Raidou can slash at monsters his a sword while two demon allies smack enemy demons. Demon negotiation, a familiar element from the core Shin Megami Tensei games, was added to the second Devil Summoner title.

These games will have a suggested retail price of $29.99 and sorry the Raiho plushie bundled with Devil Summoner 2 won’t be reprinted for the re-release. Look for these soon!

  • Hm. I wonder if they’ll get a PSN release in the future.

  • Spider-Man

    Sweet baby Jesus have mercy.

  • Samurai_Heart

I hope this reignite interest for Raidou and a new game will be made soon.

    • Mike Pureka

Yeah; I’m really hoping this is a prelude to a new one myself.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    rare no more :D

  • McBonJon

I saw these up for pre-order at Video Games Plus. Plus, it’s both games as a bundle for what they’re selling it for. I’m picking this up, since I got a PS2 a while ago and I want to play these games. Here’s the link for the order:

    Thank you for this Atlus.

    • Ah interesting! This I didn’t see, I heard they were going to be separate titles in the USA.

      • McBonJon

They are being offered separately as well, but this bundle seems like a better offer for those that don’t have either of the games.

  • DesmaX

Weird idea. They could just release it as a PS2 Classic

Unless it also doesn’t work on the PS3

    • Spirit Macardi

My thoughts exactly, although it’s still pretty awesome news.

    • AkuLord3

Well Ps2 Classics isn’t perfect and Emulating it isn’t easy so i’m all happy for this

    • Setsu Oh

i don t get it… is hd convert720 more expensive than reprint? even on vita?

  • benhofb

They should really bring back the whole devil summoner series. I loved the whole detective setting of the Raidou games. Maybe they could make a new one where you play as a new descendant of the Kuzunoha’s (maybe a chick) and stuff. Make it all modern and bad ass.

    • Zeik56

So kinda like Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers? <_<

It would be neat to see a new game that's a more explicit mix of Raidou and Soul Hackers though.

  • Would have preferred for them to release the games on PSN as PS2 Classics, but whatevs.

  • MrRobbyM

*my new and sealed copy just lost value”

“sorry the Raiho plushie bundled with Devil Summoner 2 won’t be reprinted for the re-released”

Ha! Mine’s still in the plastic case and all that. I just bought a complete limited edition sometime last year for about 20 bucks woo hooooo.

  • idrawrobots

I might buy the first one, again, the copy I bought was used and has writing on the booklet.

  • Nitraion

    Sequel please XD

  • Mavalex

    Me upon seeing this news

    • Juan AndrĂ©s Valencia

I agree, this is quite orgasmic XD

  • Solomon_Kano

I don’t even have a PS2 anymore, so I guess I’ll be buying these then going out and buying a PS2. It would’ve been nice to see them on PSN, but hell if this isn’t awesome. Atlus!

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I just want the first one. I bought the 2nd one at launch since that was the time I got into the MegaTen series

  • Zeik56

Still got my Raiho plushie. Also still need to actually finish Raidou 2. I got to the last boss and got distracted. :/

  • Brandon001

    • US as the post header says, Canada too! We posted the US price too!

      • Brandon001

I know man! but i mean where can i find them here in the US, and online?

  • gold163

Wait, reprint in Japan or reprint in the west? When’s it happening exactly??

    • Real soon. I think Devil Summoner has shipped to some places.

  • Zonic505

On the one hand, this is rather cool news that Atlus is taking a rare series & giving it a reprint, but on the other hand, I kind of wish these were on PSN as PS2 Classics.

  • Warboss Aohd

    …….well dats…..odd.

i already got King Abbadon (the one with the Raiho plush at that).

fer $30 it might be worth it.

  • Pokahontas McGuigan

the reason i still have my 60gig ps3, totally buying both

  • Chow

I’m really not sure what’s going on here, if it’s truly a reprint. What exactly is the source on this?

If it really was reprinted, wouldn’t high-profile distributers have this item in stock? From what I’ve seen over the past week, it’s only been private sellers (ie. the marketplace on Amazon) that have these items on sale at the suddenly-dropped price. Maybe the price drop from these sellers were sparked by this very rumor?

Still, I needed the first Devil Summoner game for my collection. So good.

    • Zeik56

It’s going to get a reprint. They haven’t done it yet.

  • Detrimont

    still wanting a PAL release

    • Vitor Duarte

I think they were released in PAL territories I remember seeing them here in Portugal. They vanished in less than an hour though…

      • Detrimont

i meant for the second game, it never got released in PAL territories, and the first game had very few copies released anyway

  • puchinri

If I didn’t have both already, this would be glorious. Might buy a new copy of the first anyway though~.

    Also, very glad I got the Raihou plushie when I did. ;u;

  • Lazulis

Time to steal a friend’s ps2. Or hope for this on PSN. ilu atlussss

  • Watahashi

Totally grabbing Soulless Army. It was too rare by the time I actually had disposable income.

  • NekoDraga

Damn. I really want the Raiho plushie.

    • *look at his raiho plushie*

  • Nightmesh

PSN release Atlus. You know we want and would pay for it.

  • Colonel Custard

    This is wonderful T_T news!!!

  • Adrian Smith

    I have the second one now I can finally get the first? If only someone would reprint rule of rose ;_;

  • This is the best news I’ve seen today. I was so upset when these turned out to be the most expensive games to acquire in the entire franchise, but now that they are going to be reprinted… Well, see Mavalex’s post. It’s pretty much how I feel!

  • That is pretty awshum, I might have to buy these… but PSN version would also be cool?

  • ShindoW

Already ordered mine through Amazon, sold my original copy of 1 for $60 awhile back, so I’m glad to own it again.

  • Vitor Duarte

If they get released in Europe I’ll buy both on day one.

    • malek86

Well, I doubt anyone will bother localizing DS2 for Europe at this point… if they did, that would get my award for “most unexpected news of the last 3 years”.

  • AkuLord3

Well this is awesome news for me, i still have my ps2 and i always wanted to copies of the 2 games. Ps2 classics or psychical copy i can’t wait to get it ~

    • l777l

Well, these are Devil Summoner games, but I still doubt that the copies will be psychic.

      • LynxAmali

They did reprint Persona 2 EP, on the PS1, back in 08 so it’s not that farfetched.

      • Nyandroid

Its a reprint. To me that would mean physical copies. I could be wrong though.

      • Richard N

Someone get these two a ladder, cuz the joke totally flew over their heads.

  • Gyro Zeppeli

Oh my god yes, I can finally get Raidou 1!

  • l777l

Just North America or PAL territories too?

    • Zarx

      Only NA it seems.

    • malek86

PAL version (just the first game anyway) was published by Koei. I don’t think Atlus has much of a say on what they should do.

  • JordyZ

This would be good for me to buy these games, haven’t played both of em, hopefully i can find them both including the plushie.

  • Nyandroid

Oh. My. Goodness! YES!!! Now to hope and pray that EB or Futureshop gets them in.

  • Richard N

An online store in Canada was the first to start selling this at a reasonable price last week. I was gonna get it myself, when I found out someone pretty much bought the entire stock that the store had, probably to resell it as pricey as possible.

Man is that guy probably kicking himself in the ass realizing it was a reprint and won’t be making any profit whatsoever.

    • JohnNiles

I hope so too, I hate it when people grab all the copies with the intent to create scarcity.

  • Asura

I bought this new at GS with the plushie for $20 back in the day. Didn’t realize until about 2 weeks ago that this goes for up to $50 used on Amazon.

  • Wonderful news! Now I can finish the series =^_^=

  • SetzerGabbiani

FINALLY!! The first Raidou has been pretty much unattainable on Amazon, even though the price has been coming down lately. Atlus knows how to do marketing right. I assume this is in anticipation for Soul Hackers next month.

    • M’iau M’iaut

That end is really one that gets everything right — even given the HOLY SHIT events. Very reminding of Shadow Hearts.

  • I bought these about 2 years ago and made sure they had the manuals and covers, cost me a lot, but I don’t regret it! I’ll definitely be picking up the reprints for collection purposes though…even if they don’t have a Raiho plush :'(

  • Quinton Cunningham

Holy hell, thank you. I might actually be able to afford them now.

  • Kenny Loh

why not make a HD remaster for PS3, it better and a lot peoples got chance to play it.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

Cool. Never had the chance to experience these, Definite buy.

  • I saw the thumbnail came up and about to scream “SEQUEL!!!” but then…oh well, still a good news!

  • Lilith

Still have an unfinished copy with my plushie. I bought that on a whim I’m not even a Megaten fan.

  • GetOffMy_Lawn

I’m in the middle of my first play through of the first one, and I’m absolutely loving it! Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up the sequel now without having to pay a small fortune.

  • Oltheros

Wouldn’t it make more sense to release digitally on psn? Who still uses their ps2? I’ll never understand Atlus.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Atlus has been doing or allowing multiple reprints back to the days of Persona and other titles on the PS1. If it is as was before, sometimes it has been a republish company paying the bills — some of the legal text has represented this. In a case such as the latter, they only get their money back when physical copies are involved.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

      I do
Now, who still still uses their PSP? :D

      • I do still use my psp :D
i hope they also release all SMT game on PSN tho
My mom give my ps1 & ps2 to my cousin and i only got a ps3 now >.<

        • MrSirFeatherFang

I was making a cruel joke about Atlus.. PSP and a certain game people wanted.

          • neo_firenze

            Ah. That ;)

To be fair though… this is a simple reprint of the exact same disc they already released. P2:EP PSP would require some actual localization work.

But yep. I still use that PSP, Atlus :)

          • MrSirFeatherFang

I know, I’m really happy about this reprint though. My friend and I were talking about tracking the 1st one down for weeks.

      • neo_firenze

I still use both of my PSPs regularly.

PSP-3000 (Spirited Green JPN Carnival Colors series! style!) for UMD games, and PSP Go for downloaded games.

Don’t laugh, the Go is a pretty fantastic system for PS1 Classics in particular. Faster load times than actual PS1 discs, and with a video out cable you can play them on a TV with a Dualshock 3 connected via bluetooth… but then unplug and take it on the go whenever you want. I have my PSP RPGs from Atlus, Nippon Ichi, Xseed and the like on my internal memory, and a 32GB memory stick crammed full of PS1 games. And it’s actually super portable!

And even though I have a Vita… memory space is more precious on that, so outside of a select few PSP games I stick to using the actual PSP.

        • MrSirFeatherFang

I know you can have 2 micro SD cards on a Pro Stick Duo adapter. People have done 64 GB, but I’m not sure about 128 GB. The PSP Go is interesting to me, but as of now I don’t feel like getting one.

  • Sylveria

Spiffy. I managed to pick up both of these earlier last year. First one is super fun, haven’t played the second yet. Definitely worth buying and dusting off the PS2 for if you have one.

I still need to track down the CE of 2 with the plushy. It’s so adorable.

  • JustThisOne

YES! YES! YES! I can finally get my hands on King Abaddon!

  • Jordan Coleman

Didn’t know these we were rare. Got them both sub $20 if not just $20 at Gamestop. Even got the 2 CE.

  • Brandonmkii

How unexpected. This is great news for people who haven’t picked them up yet. As for me, my Raiho plushie is staring at me as I type :p

  • noctis_nox

Luckily I already have the plushie. XD

  • dahuuuundge

hoarders who will hog up multiple reprint copies be damned!
I’ll be buying one of each for collection purposes

  • Zero_Destiny

Nice, I suppose Atlus is giving it another shake because of the soon to be released Soul Hackers especially since it has some bonus Raidou content. It’ll be a sorta way to hype up fans and maybe offer others a look into these games if they got introduced to Raidou through Soul Hackers.

  • I’ve always wanted to try out these games. I wouldn’t have mind if these went on PSN, either, like what Europe got (I think). At any rate, I’ll check these out when they’re released for sure.

  • gamerdude

    BTW the soundtrack is AWESOME!

  • Zakai

Is it only US reprint ?

    • Jisgsaw

As Atlus didn’t edit them in PAL territories (and the second even never came out), I would say yes.
It’s however pretty cheap to modify your PS2 to play US games, which can come in handy to play some RPGs that never came to Europe.

      • Zakai

Thx for the answer !! I’m going to follow your advice, I’m pretty sure that it worth it to spend some money on my ps2.

  • Riseabovethesky

I got the first one but still haven’t played it (I know that’s bad…). It was a preemptive strike back when Nocturne price had skyrocketed. Believe it or not, I bought the original Disgaea for 70 bucks… still got my money’s worth a thousand times ;)

  • Alex

I already have the second game. (As well as the Raiho plushie) It’s good I can have opportunity to get the first.

  • “Hahahaha PS2 dead?? PS4? What are you talking about?” – Atlus

  • Locklear93

I guess I shouldn’t have thrown out my Raiho plushie last December.

  • AJ

Good. Now there is no excuse for the insane prices on the first game.

(People will still be selling it for a billion dollars, though.)

  • Istillduno

Wait for PS2s to stop being made
Reprint PS2 game rather than a digital release on current consoles
    Prof- … Wait, what?

  • Ty Arnold

I never did find a copy of the first game. I haven’t heard anything good about it, but it’s the only SMT game released overseas that I haven’t played in some capacity, so I feel that I have to get it just for completion’s sake.

  • Scratch90

For anyone who is on the fence about Raidou games, get it! Awesome game tbh. Atlus, Raidou 3 pleaseeee… but make the game title name shorter :V

  • thaKingRocka

Sorry if I misunderstood something, but will they be sold for 30 each or 30 for the set?

  • Victor Magos

These are gonna be for ps2 again? Either way im so glad! been looking for them for years :DD

  • Jessica Courtois

So now that these are getting reprinted and Soul Hackers is out / coming out in English, how about we get the first Devil Summoner to finish off the series? Or do people not care about Kyouji? :(
