This Bullet Hell Shooter Feels Like Its Made In Japan, But Actually It’s From Canada

By Spencer . March 8, 2013 . 4:18pm

Danmaku Unlimited 2 is like a bullet hell love letter from Canada. This indie developed shooter has the spirit of a new Japanese arcade shooter, but on your phone like Cave’s arcade ports. Sunny Tam, the game’s developer, made five stages, four difficulty levels, and a boss rush mode to shoot through. Danmaku Unlimited 2 has music from Blankfield and supports the iCade mini-arcade cabinet.

If you have an iPhone or iPad you can download the full version of Danmaku Unlimited 2 for $4.99 on iTunes. There’s a free to download lite version too which lets players sample the first stage.

This is begging for a console/PS Vita release.

  • FetusZero

If this was on PC, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Oh well :/

    • Wolframium

      My feelings exactly

    • CirnoLakes

That’s exactly where I’m used to playing scrolling shooters in recent year thanks to the doujin community.

I don’t mean to port beg or anything. But this sort of thing would definitely make me give it a closer look. The only Apple device I own is an old iPod and I plan to keep it that way.

So as much as I’d be happy to pick it up, I’m going to have to pass on it until it is on a platform I actually care about. And the PC is definitely a platform that would bring this to the top of my list.

This seems like the kind of game that would be a bit treacherous with touch controls but if it turns out okay, I’m totally down for it.

    • TrevHead

I don’t have a iphone myself but those who do say CAVE bullet hells are much easier on iphone than console / arcade.

I’ve no idea if this game has touch controls as good as CAVE’s iphone ports though.

      • JustThisOne

Seriously?! Woah, maybe I totally should give this a shot then. I’m totally poop with keyboard control touhou, so maybe I’m secretly a beast with touch controls.

  • No

Looks super! I don’t have an iPhone though.

I bet when you die, it says sorry.

    • Go2hell66

      i lol’d

I loved the touch controls for Cave’s shooters. I felt like I was more accurate in my movements with it. EspGaluda II was my system seller. I probably would have gotten a classic model if not for that game.

  • superdry

Ooh…this looks really nice and looks to be inspired by Dodonpachi. Good stuff, good stuff.

Too bad I don’t own an iOS device or else I’d buy it along with the other CAVE shmups available.

  • Go2hell66

yoo canada! they have schmups now!!?

  • CirnoLakes

I come off as someone who prefers games because they’re made in Japan to the point I’ve been accused of liking games for no other reason than them being Japanese, or disliking them based upon no other reason than being not Japanese.

But I don’t. And any tendencies to like Japanese games is all cultural. I couldn’t care less where this game is made, if it is from a genre I love.

I love the scrolling shooter genre. And I am so happy to see places like this make games like this. It is always so nice to know that not only Japan is carrying on the torch for this genre, while others are flocking to the first person shooter.

There isn’t too too much that stands out to me about this game from looking at this video. I’m also not an iOS user or fan by any means. But it certainly looks decent and I would pick it up fairly quickly if it were on a platform I liked.

No matter who you are and where you’re from, please keep carrying on that torch for gaming genres I enjoy.

    iPhone only!? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  • Go2hell66

omg the soundtrack for this game is amazing…

  • Wappuli

Shmups is one of my favorite genres and this looks really good, kinda easyish but that’s OK. And I have always liked Blankfields music so a match made in heaven.
Too bad that it’s for iPhones only, make it for any console or a PC where I can use my arcade stick and I’ll buy it right away.

  • Sentsuizan_93

My god, this looks awesome. What would it be on?

    You’re welcome, world.

THAT MUSIC THO! THAT SHIT HIT ME IN MY SOUL! And I mean that in the best way!

  • DenjinJ

DU 1 was very good. Visually gorgeous, and the bullet movement was much more advanced and distinct than most others – really the closest analog to Touhou I found on iPhone. It also had a handy feature that put a large ring around the player so that even if your ship is under your finger, you won’t lose it.
