First Look At Tales Of Xillia With English Voice Acting

By Spencer . March 11, 2013 . 1:50am

A new Tales of Xillia gameplay video popped online which showcases the game’s English voice acting. Milla Maxwell has a tough sounding voice similar to her Japanese counterpart and Jude sounds like a chipper hero. Anim Arte also posted a couple of screenshots and the game’s North American box art.

Thanks for the tip Spencer N!

I heard that the Voice Actress for Lightning (FF13) does Milla.

    • isfuturebright

Really? Doesn’t reminds me of her… I liked Lightning’s voice though.

  • Curan_Altea

The voices sound good overall. Only issue I saw was with her voice during the cut in animation, but it’s a small issue.

  • https://twitter.com/RaiohV Raioh

I blame this being battles instead of a cutscene, but I honestly cannot like the voice cast…especially Milla(her voice isn’t supposed to be deep to begin with..). Pretty emotionless too, I am not feeling any impact at all :/ Maybe it’s also, because I played it in JPN already and the godly acting there was on a whole another dimension, but dang…I mean I loved the voices in Graces f, so I’m obviously not hating simply cause of dub.

I hope that they’ll show some voiced cutscenes so we can get a better idea of what to expect.

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I thought Milla is at least supposed to sound a little bit serious, considering her personality. (The same can’t be said for her outfit, but that’s besides the point.)

      • https://twitter.com/RaiohV Raioh

There’s a difference between a little bit serious(not even her main trait) and 60 year old named warrior of the Romance of Three Kingdoms.

    • Tien Ron

they did say in an interview that milla’s voice was to be deepen to suit her English voice instead because her voice cant work like her Japanese counterpart. when you hear the Japanese one too much it tends to of course sound different but you shouldn’t compare them. over the top voice acting works well in Japanese but dons;nt in English it would sound cheesy.

      • https://twitter.com/RaiohV Raioh

Thing is these clips didn’t gave off any emotion at all. I absolutely know that you can’t keep the dub 1:1 to the JPN version, but the least you should expect of people who get paid for something is putting some effort into it~

        • Tien Ron

well for one their in battle so Milla out of my way sounds just about right, second Japanese have really over the top acting and for English speaking people it would sound ridiculous. it’s just different culture im sure the japanese feel the same about western games with japanese voices it just dons;t quiet match.

        • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

what emotions were you looking for? the “im battling a none important enemy” one? there were just fighting. please complain once you have watched an emotional cutscene, or something.

    • raymk

Milla japanese voice was kinda deep, not this deep but deep.

    • Tien Ron

mila is a character. how can you just define her because of her voice? her voice is deep, so what? it’s still milla she isn’t wearing some hot pants and obese and living in a trailer to show that its western. like leave the voices alone people please….

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Dude Milla’s voice is extremely deep in Japanese…

  • Victor Wesker

I care not about english voices. I like more japanese voices.

    • Randy Marsh

Then this video is not for you.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

As much as I like the JP audio for most things, here are some things to look forward to.
      http://www.fr.namcobandaigames.eu/community/discussions/tales-of-xillia-a-propos-des-doublages
… Yes, I know it’s French. No I can’t read it, but I can tell you this. There won’t be dual audio for Xillia, but they’re hoping for the next localization there will be dual audio. Probably be on a type of media to hold such an amount of space *cough*Blu-ray*cough*
So Vita games are out of the question.

  • Talearc

Already done the JPN ver 2 years ago, now waiting US ver for better understanding of story, waiting patiently for the release date announcement

  • Prithivi

    Wow Milla! You’re da man!

  • MrSirFeatherFang

My wallet is ready for over $100 of DLC costumes. Also there was preorder costumes for Milla and Jude, right? It was a Cress and Stahn costume? I would guess it would be a GS exclusive like ToGf D2 costumes.

  • Randy Marsh

I’m already liking the American version of Jude, sounds better in my opinion. The original Japanese voice of Jude got on my nerves every time he talked during a chat and cutscene, but to be fair I did like some of his battle quotes.

Leia and Alvin, well that is how I was already expecting them to sound in English anyways. Milla is just meh, not great but not bad so far, I still prefer the great MIYUKI SAWASHIRO!

Now I just want to hear the English voice of the great, the talented, and incredibly kickass Rowen J. Ilbert! Don’t fail me now Namco!

    • Maumac77

I expect him to sound like an older version of duke. I would love that so much <3

    • http://youtube.com/user/Chubunater Chubunato

I feel the same way about Jude’s voice

  • NightzeroAX

So far the voices are fine except Milla’s. Whats with english Voice Actors making female characters sound like a dude. Tales of Graces F was way better in the voice department.

  • http://twitter.com/atmey Atmey

I gotta learn Japanese, would save me 2 years of waiting.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Add that up for manga, anime, light novels, etc….
      Well beyond my life span!

  • isfuturebright

I think Milla’s voice is too deep… To me the characters look and act like japanese. So english voice makes no sense… sorry.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jefriputra Jeff

yeah, i think she sound like a man…

    • Tien Ron

that’s how i feel when i hear Disney characters talking Japanese. i thought the Japanese version of kingdom hearts was awful….~_~

    • Guest
      • isfuturebright

I didn’t say that all english dub suck. You’re putting words in my mouth :P I just think it doesn’t fit here because the characters are really “japanese-like”, ok? I mean look at Vanquish. It’s a japanese game, right? But I think that english suits the character a lot better. He acts “american” or wester or well, non-japanese. So it makes sense, it works better.

I’m not against dubbing at all :P It helps them sell games on local markets. I just hope for a future where both local anguage AND native language are ALWAYS available as options.

        • Prithivi

While I usually love English dubs (with obvious exceptions cofBatenKaitoscof), I totally agree with you. I am also pretty sure that even with the text translation to English we lose a little bit of “soul” since the Tales of series is, as you said, so frigging japanese (btw, not sure if I used “frigging” here correctly :p). But I guess it can’t be helped, it’s like a Tarantino movie, they only really work in English. But you should be really thankful that they bother dubbing the game to your language while caring about the quality!

          • http://nisekami.deviantart.com/ NiseKami

;___; Finally, someone who understands JP VA preference

          • Tien Ron

i agree that we should be thankful about it. when i buy this game and i’m going to show them that i love the series and what their doing is a massive thanks from me

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

that meme doesnt work for this…

    • raymk

They look and act japanese? You stereotyping son.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Wow, jude sounds like a man

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

A man you would date in a heart beat

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Im straight but if there was ever a man i would date, it would be kyosuke from little busters.

Also, i definitely like Jude in ToX2 a LOT more, he suits a lot as best friend char (of ludger’s) rather than MC

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

I miss read that,I thought you said Milla, …..I would date Yu , no homo

      • M’iau M’iaut

Well he is a pettanko, so you are probably dead on the money.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          delicious flat chest lol

    • MaskMask

I thought it was a he until I saw the boobs at the end of the fight.

    • MrTyrant

Cool isn’t, i didn’t think it was possible haha (yeah I know Judes in Xillia 2 act like a man)

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

He acts more like a man in ToX after the first half lol, but with that voice (japanese’s) he didnt feel that manly, i admit it was cool when he get pissed off tho xD

    • Taisuke

      IKR?? O-O

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

Greatly improved voice choice for Jude and an overly stern one for Millia. It’s not unbearable, I can dig it.

    • SerendipityX

Pretty much this. Millia voice isn’t bad just sounds a little stern. I think maybe they should have lightened her tone a bit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

The voice acting sounds OK to me. But tht aside, YAY ENGLISH TRAILERZ!!

  • Göran Isacson

That was… neat? Yeah. Yeah, pretty okay from what I can hear. Nothing too grating, nothing that felt screechy and out of place. Only thing I’m not digging is how the “disaffected, cooler older guy” sounds a bit TOO disaffected and unemotional, but that’s a pretty light criticism all things considered.

  • Mr_SP

“Like this”!? “Like this”!?! That’s not a “Like this”, that’s a “been practising for a couple hours now”!

  • Go2hell66

    I am okay with this

  • gamerdude

Does this game have original voices too? Because this is horrible.
I never understood why is it so hard for Americans to read subtitles. Doesn’t VA sub feel like it’s insulting your intelligence a bit?
    Maybe it’s a cultural thing.

    • Randy Marsh

Confirmed there be no Japanese voices, just English. The End.

Subbing a game and keeping the Japanese voices can be good for the general otaku fanbase, but the downside is that it can alienate new comers away from the series.

      • AkuLord3

Agree but i don’t see why it would alienate people. I sorta do but for this series i don’t see why if you were randomly trying it *shrugs*

        • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

I have to agree with Mister Marsh. Newcomers prefer TV series with their languages. At least that’s what a TV channel from my country does all the time based on people’s requests

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I suppose it’s an American thing. I recall not being able to hear what was going on during a movie (at a party I think) and I suggested subtitles. It was like a cardinal sin.
Besides that, even though the US has no official language, English is basically the official language. It would be strange if something wasn’t in English, at least in America.

    • Tien Ron

i feel like keeping the Japanese voices is insulting us, because i for one am not Japanese if i wanted the Japanese game i would of bought it straight from japan and learnt their language, i’m English so i expect my games to be in English voices and all. having a game where the text is English and the voices aren’t is what i call a lazy game and i should have to pay full price for that.

      • gamerdude

Wow, I guess I have to admit that I had no idea people over there think like that.

As contrast if someone tried dubbing say… a voice track over LoTR in here we’d think somebody just took a dump on otherwise good product.

Didn’t mean to offend anyone the cultural gap just seems astonishing to me.
Especially when dubbing over Japanese there seems to be a great disconnect because not only the pace and content but the whole body language is so different that English always seems odd to me on it. Like a genki character for example is always 100% more awkward in English.

        • Tien Ron

i guess that’s to be expected when people make games they normally put their country’s interests first. but you have to think that them putting it in English puts our interests first because it enables us to understand. plus Japanese trying to speak English actually never works out well. also in battle talks wouldn’t have subtitles so we would be lost for boss battle information…. and no offence taken :) your opinion matters

      • AkuLord3

Its not like he said the game to have ONLY JPN dub, just if it also had it you know Dual audio still you make a point some people agree on and the guy’s comment was dumb.
Though i wouldn’t a game not having English VA is lazy….there are much Lazier things to do in games and especially working over translating, Localization and such…it wouldn’t be everything but no lazy

        • gamerdude

          This is true.
Besides blue rays are HUGE. Having the voice already recorded means that it would be next to nothing in extra work to put it in as an option.

What’s more worrying is that smaller games don’t feel confident they could be localized because it seems the standard for that term seems to be full English dub, which I’m still willing to bet a lot of people don’t really care for.

Would you like all your anime to be dubbed too?

          • Flandre Scarlet

The general idea is that, since it costs roughly the same amount of money to get the licensing fees for the JP audio as it does to fully dub the game, localizations cut down costs by removing the Japanese audio entirely. The payoff for including the audio isn’t enough to justify keeping it in. Anyone who would throw that much of a fit over the lack of an audio track in the game would have imported it anyway.

It’s also to help curb reverse importations. Same reason the Japanese release doesn’t come with English audio even if there are plans to release it globally.

          • Yggdr5

The problem with importing the game is: The text isn’t available in english either. I wouldn’t mind an e.g. asia version with jap dub and eng sub (like Final Fantasy XIII).

          • gamerdude

This please. I have to say that was a good point about licencing fees of the audio track I didn’t think of that.

          • Flandre Scarlet

The point is, if you want a JP dub so much to the point you cannot play the game without one, you should consider learning to read Japanese, instead of complaining. The choice and option is there to you. If it affects you that much, do something about it. All I see is a very spoiled person whining that a game does not have the language option he wants but won’t take the effort to learn how to read the language he loves so much.

          • Tien Ron

100% behind you on this. some people are just really ungrateful it’s not enough that it’s a struggle to get it over here.

          • Maumac77

            Yes I would

        • Tien Ron

you have to think about the cost, if they did dual audio the Japanese would just import. then japan Namco would lost considerable amount of money because technically we are getting a better deal than them. then what would happen?

    • AkuLord3

Or maybe some people like hearing games in their language…just like OTHER PLACES IN THE WORLD. Don’t get me wrong i enjoy JPN dub and don’t mind reading subs on things (since i’ll be doing it most games English or not) also there’s other reasons why it doesn’t have JPN VA, not just “Cultural” Thing…Go do some research before spouting BS

    • Herok♞

so you would read subtitles during a battle scene, when your focus should be on fighting not reading?

      • gamerdude

Really now is that ever useful info in any battle system on any console ever made? I can see how it could be but especially in tales it’s just not.

        • Herok♞

Some more important battles do sometimes have small bits of story that could be missed in generic battles not so much.

      • Tien Ron

that’s a perfect example of why it don’t work but the fan base will be like oh they didnt put subtitle for in-game when there was none in the first place. that’s extra work.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Because only America uses English as its native language. Right.

Not to mention they would have to not only pay the EN voice actors but pay the JP voice actors again. Just because some people don’t mind En dubbing doesn’t make them “less intelligent” because they don’t want to read subtitles, I don’t mind subtitles in anime or in games like with cut scenes, primarily fighting games but usually when it comes to JRPGs I would prefer to have an EN dub. If you are so smart then just buy the Japanese version.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething
      • roxas sora

nah it wont work for me dude.you already defeat by jude MA AKA kogahazan agito

    • raymk

YOu could have and should have read below before posting that. Why you people act like you are new to namco is beyond me.

    • Tien Ron

ignorance must be a bliss for you…. how about READING before posting?

    • Spirit Macardi

Yeah, people are so weird for wanting to listen to something in their native language :P

  • JordyZ

Does anybody know Millia’s voice actor? sounds like a man. but that animation 1:04 is pretty much my favorite. Also like Alvin’s voice.

  • Suriel Cruz

Can’t wait! The English voice acting sounds good, but I will end up playing the whole game with Japanese voice acting with English subtitles. I feel that Japanese voice actors do a better job interpreting emotions when it comes to anime style games.

Ps. BTW, PLEASE I WANT THE WHOLE CODE GEASS COSTUMES, PLEASE!!! DX

    • Yggdr5

It’s not confirmed and unlikely with Bandai Namco and Atlus games that they’ll have dual audio. They just don’t care for their hardcore fans.

      • Herok♞

Did you you really just say that wanting Japanese Voice Acting makes you a hardcore fan? Wouldn’t the hardcore fans be the ones who buy both companies products without the need for the voice acting of choice because I consider myself a hardcore Atlus fan dual audio never has or will cross my mind.

        • MrSirFeatherFang

I forgot where I read this, but apparently hardcore fans are the ones who buy the Japanese release and the one released in their territory (or import it if necessary). Possibly even all the special editions from each territory.
          Hardcore to the max.

          • Herok♞

So in other words how much money you have to spend on games makes you hardcore? That sucks for normal people like me who have a limited budget for games.

          • Tien Ron

i’m a hardcore tales fan, i buy all the english versions and brought only few japanese ones i still consider myself a hardcore fan because i know all the series. a fan is one who wants to play the game for what it is. namco is givng that to me and im thankful and i know they know that when it gets released i am one of the fans SUPPORTING HIDEO BABA!

          • roxas sora

and also spend money and time for learning japanese and go to tales of festival in japan

      • Guest

Tales of Graces f did have Dual Audio! :/ anyways… we’ll see.

        • Yggdr5

          It didn’t. No version worldwide.

  • Yggdr5

Don’t like the english voice overs. I really wished Namco Bandai would finally listen to it’s fans and offer dual audio, especially after Hideo Baba stated that he’s making “efforts to include both Japanese voice-overs and English voice-overs.” yeah right ‘efforts’, just not big efforts…

    • Tien Ron

buy the Japanese version of the game then, and learn Japanese. stop hating on namco america just cause they wont include Japanese voices.

      • Yggdr5

yeah because this is a total appropriate reaction. I cannot understand this “If it’s good enough for me it should be good enough for everyone” mindset.

        • Tien Ron

and i don’t understand why is it in Japanese when i’m in a English speaking country? the japanese don’t have dual audio in their game so why are we? and the English voices dont have to be fine for you , if you like the Japanese voices get the Japanese game , don’t be greedy and want what they have but more.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I think most fans just want to play the game. Besides, they’re still considering dual audio for later Tales releases
*gasp* we’re getting more Tales games?
      (source)
      http://www.fr.namcobandaigames.eu/community/discussions/tales-of-xillia-a-propos-des-doublages
Next thing you know Berserk’s going to finish lol

      • Yggdr5

How much later is later? This is already the third PS3 Tales game. And I know it’s different for everyone but there is a big group of gamers like me out there, whose immersion in the game gets totally ruined by english VA. So why ignore us?

        • MrSirFeatherFang

Your group may be big, but there’s an even bigger market out there. The game is pretty much the same except for the voice acting. They gotta broaden the appeal. The “anime” art style (sorry I hate using that term) is already alienating enough. Having a foreign language would be even worse.
I dunno how much later is, but at least we’re getting Tales games. The only possibilities are Vesperia and Xillia 2 atm though (Blu-ray = more space). I don’t think handhelds have the capacity to have dual audio with a game with lots of voice acting. (though Soul Sacrifice has it as DLC!)
Look, I’ve been screwed over by Team Ninja many times. There’s dual audio for NGS2+ in Japan and Asia, but not in NA? WTH!! TK RU even promised us dual audio… *sigh*
We got the gore, but no dual audio… I still bought the game. But… I would’ve really liked the JP audio… besides the gore isn’t as good as the NG2 anyways.

          • Yggdr5

How can it be alienating when there is also an english default voice track? It’s only licensing fees. But it’s incomprehensible that they don’t offer the original voice track at least as DLC then.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Whoops, I was just talking about if it had JP audio only. Too many different conversations going on here lol. The DLC options sounds like a good alternative, especially if the format the game is on has limited space. Every game device seems to support DLC as well.
Around my area, there’s a lot of dislike for anime-related material in general. If it looks weird avoid it. The Anime Club doesn’t help either :(

        • Flandre Scarlet

Because statistically, your group doesn’t matter. The amount of people who would boycott a game because it lacked an audio track is too small to justify paying the fees to keep it in on an overseas release. While your group may be large, there’s an even larger group of people who don’t care about the voice track and just want a new Tales game.

          • Tien Ron

i agree with him, plus it dons;t help namco if they include Japanese cause one your not catering to the larger Marjory of society and two it cost them twice as much just to keep the Japanese voice and tales is already a niche series and the fan base isn’t enough to cover the expenses

          • Yggdr5

Sorry to destroy your world view, but most gamers -even outside of japan- are not US citizens. And many people in europe e.g. prefer the original audio track.

      • https://twitter.com/RaiohV Raioh

Please don’t give me hopes about Berserk, especially since I catched up with it a few days ago….it’ll just be too hard for my heart.

    • LynxAmali

I hope you realize that licensing voice tracks is very, very difficult and often a long and tedious process Besides, just import the Japanese copy if you’re so adamant. Because CLEARLY you can tell the quality via one small clip.

      • Yggdr5

Normally I would agree with you but since Namco Bandai is the developer and worldwide publisher they simply don’t face this problem. They can put this in the original voice actor contracts.

        • Tien Ron

put what in their contract? there are two companies one in japan to carter to Japanese and one in american to carter in English… how selfish… in battles where they are no subtitles i want to be able to understand and get the jokes.

        • LynxAmali

It still applies. You have to realize that just because BanNam has a worldwide grasp, doesn’t mean they’ll give stuff for free. It tends to be really pricey too. Also; contract! That has nothing to do with it. They still need to license the voice track.

          • Yggdr5

Is it really that difficult to understand? When they cast the VA in japan they already know that the game is seeing a western release later. So they could just make the very same contract they would have either way apply for a worldwide market. And of course it would be a little bit more expensive, but the whole process would get a lot more simple.

          • Maumac77

“When they cast the VA in Japan they already know that the game is seeing a western release later.” He does have a point. I mean c’mon, what about all those great times we’ve had with Tales of Rebirth, Destiny2, and the Destiny Director’s cut. Also the improvement that was Innocence R? We’ve gotten all of those too right? Oh wait…..we didn’t; and this is solely from one series. This list can get really long

          • Yggdr5

Once again, they are the ones that decide which titles get localized so they obviously know it beforehand. And as sad as it is, only mothership titles have a chance of coming to the west so kiss goodbye to Innocence R & Co.

          • Maumac77

That still doesn’t make any sense since Graces f also had the possibility of not being localized, just like Vesperia PS3. Also I’m sure there are some titles that were not intended to be localized, and yet were later for some reason, and vice versa. Also I don’t care if any of the 3 Vita titles will get localized. Why? Because I imported them. Do I understand Japanese? No. However, I very much agree that they won’t get localized, which is why I imported them. I did the same thing with graces f, and still bought the NA copy as well, which I highly prefer over the original. Both in terms of being in a language I can read, and also because I very much prefer the dub in my NA copy over the original voices in the japanese version. Funny enough, I hvae com to this conclusion in practically all JRPGs I play, either through dual audio, or having two copies of same game

    • http://www.thejaystack.com/ Jon Stachewicz

Anonymous internet user ‘Someone’ has a better idea of what goes into putting Japanese voices in a game than the people who actually makes the game, feels the need to ‘call them out’ on their effort

In other news the sky is blue

    • roxas sora

yeah.well it just us jap audio lover dream.well, i already learn japanese and this is not problem to me anymore

      • Yggdr5

Nice! I really wish I still had the time to learn japanese. Maybe next life.

        • roxas sora

you just being lazy.well the kanji is killing me for one year.(what do you mean if you still had time?are you sick?)

  • AkuLord3

AND I like it, besides Milia which i get what they tried to do but is kinda ehhh maybe in cutscenes and events i’ll feel more for it. Everyone else…pretty good, Can’t wait

  • Raika Souku

shit i approve of the voice and i want to learn that hand shake for the hell of it

    • Draparde

omg i do too! i saw it awhile back and thought. i MUST do that with someone before i die!!

  • gamerdude

Well let’s hope this gets an international edition too then like Star Ocean did =)

    • MrSirFeatherFang

It can’t, since Xillia 2 exists.

      • gamerdude

How does that rule out a JP audio track?

        • MrSirFeatherFang

International edition doesn’t imply the addition of dual audio. Baba said that Xillia was rushed and lots of content was cut out. They were thinking of doing a Director’s Cut, but decided to just make Xillia 2 (which reuses a crap load of content from Xillia 1 anyways. You even revisit the same areas more than once from what I read).
That’s why there’s no chance, all they wanted to add was put in for Xillia 2.

    • roxas sora

yeah like tales of graces f.WAIT! that not gonna happen because of ludger will kresnik time factor LOL

  • Höhlenmensch

What the hell did I just listen to? Milla sounds like she’s 50.

    • Tien Ron

well if you think about it, she is maxwell she’s probably older than 50

      • Höhlenmensch

Well if she looked like 50 I wouldn’t have any problem with her voice.

        • Tien Ron

hahaha well she is meant to come off as that old wise person in a young body.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Sounds like a great idea… only if she was a loli…

          • roxas sora

wait no. that implied on elle and elise

          • DawnWolf

Except she’s not. If you’ve played Xillia you know Millia, although being the Maxwell, is only 20ish in body and mind. More over it becomes VERY obvious that she ISN’T the “old wise person” as she is totally ignorant to human ways.

          • Tien Ron

well i haven’t played xillia so i’m only going from what i read she is uncultured to the outside world Hench why i would imagine her voice to sound the way it sounds because she has no influences from other people. i know fully well how the story goes but due to spoilers i wont say anything.

      • 果林

im pretty sure milla was only 20

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Her body was made to “emulate” a girl human of her age, her “existence” as maxwell doesnt has anything to do with her voice

  • Wappuli

I’m OK with these voices at least for now except for Judes, that’s just horrible.
Hopefully we’ll get a trailer with Elise, Tipo and Rowen also soon.

  • Maumac77

The VA is fine with me. the only voice I have a small problem with is Milla’s, but I’m sure I’ll end up liking it after I hear it more and in something besides battle. Just like Hubert.

  • Ehren Rivers

Okay, I do actually like this quite a lot. I think Milla’s voice is a bit too mature for the way she looks (her costume is just so… childish), but other than that it all sounds great. I mean, I even LIKE her voice I just think it will fit better in a different costume. Also, her hair terrifies me still.

I’m curious, though, is there still not a release date for this game? All I can find is ’2013′. If I remember right the voice acting was finished in October/November of last year, and the English version of the game was announced way back in July 2012. Hell, if my memory isn’t beating me up and stealing my lunch money, I am pretty sure the US/EU trademark was registered nearly a year ago. (March 19th or something, I wanna say)

Seems like Namco is dropping the ball repeatedly into a mile-deep well on this localization.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I all can remember is that the voice work was done long ago. Maybe it’ll release soon :D

    • Maumac77

Last time I heard it was July (2nd)?

  • Draparde

    I’m excited all over again!

i enjoy most of the voices, none of them i hate~ and i love that awesome handshake

  • Misty Dawson

Milla’s voice is great for her. She reminds me of Lightning with the sternness in her voice. Also, it’s just one video of battles. At least let some story dialog happen/get heard before you tear in to a decision. Geez. Nothing but whining on here… give it a chance instead of begging/crying for japanese voices.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

And watch people complain about that voices , shut up and switch it to Japanese dub if you hate it so much. As for me? I like them, at lest its not the same reused voice actors.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

The fate of every article on Siliconera sadly.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        True words,

    • roxas sora

make research about it ok?then write again.oh try type yuri lowental and jonny young bosch between hiro shimono and tsubasa yobunaga about game VA.then write again.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        >:} You didnt see what I did there?

        • roxas sora

          no,not at all.

    • Romored

That’s what many are complaining about: that you can’t switch to JP dub in Tales games. At least in this one you can’t, maybe in the future ones.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

I forgot you couldn’t. “Meh” At lest we are getting the game, People cheer up!!! ” Demon fist high five*

  • fyi1191

Alvin’s the best, Milla’s the worst.

  • Oltheros

Can i just say I DON’T like the voice acting? Not trying to start sh#t, just my opinion.

I refuse to buy into the Tales series until you’re able to access JP voice acting in some form.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething
      • Mister_Nep

Don’t be a jerk just because he’s stating his opinion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There’s no reason to be spiteful because of it.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

I’m just stating my opinion, on his opinionated opinion.

          • roxas sora

and i opnionated on your opinion because you being rude.

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

Please do ^_^ we should be friends

          • roxas sora

ok let do that “nisemono otaku-kun” ^_^

          • Guest

            What does NISEMONO stand for?

          • roxas sora

wow.nisemono otaku-kun.you did research.well, if you calling Jap VA is the same voice then you are fake.(well fake otaku at least)

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            Does sarcasm ring a bell?

          • roxas sora

yep but i love sarcasm post. it really entertaining nisemono-kun

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

Lets stop with the Spam, Sora-Bō

          • roxas sora

you stop first.i just having fun with you.nisemono-kun.you who the one get serious.LOL

ok im sorry okay?dont get mad.i just having fun.

      • MrTyrant

They don’t sound the same and you should know that. While I not complaining about the english voices of tales and neither asking for a dual audio in a series that never had them to begin with I don’t think you are helping here.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

Do I ever help?. Keep asking and it might happen

          • roxas sora

hahahahahahah.why do you even in jrpg and anime comunnity anyway?ahhhhhh i know you must be “nisemono otaku-kun” you really make me laugh.thanks.

      • roxas sora

        wow.you using a meme.this is great!!

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

Move along Roxas, Your just a nobody

          • roxas sora

well at least i exist techincally.why? jelous of my role?VA:koki uchiyama.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

You claim not to start anything and then make that last sentence.

Just a word of warning that, that will probably come back on you.

      • Oltheros

How is what I said offensive in any way? It is statement of personal preference, I didn’t bad-mouth the actors or any who likes them.

It just isn’t for me, heck I don’t play JRPGs dubbed whenever I can, that doesn’t stop others from enjoying them.

    • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

      -_- good luck with that.

  • Kai2591

    Dudes.
    Chill.

  • Sentsuizan_93

I think the voice acting in this game is actually okay. But I’m not gonna jump to unnecessary conclusions until I see a more dialogued spoiler-free trailer.

  • Freud_Hater

…Is it just me or does Leia sounds like Michelle Ruff?

‘Cuz that would be freakin’ AWESOME!!

  • Detrimont

    That patty cake was awesome.
(i won’t judge the voice acting until the game has been released and i can see the cutscenes, but from what I have heard, it’s fine)

  • Ferrick

wow really ? I’m very grateful that we got the english version, but you guys act like its taboo or something. Don’t like the voice ? mute the tv and read the subtitles or just buy the japanese version. Sheesh, can’t a simple tales fan just enjoy his game without seeing you guys go nuts about this ?

    • Tien Ron

couldn’t agree more. they act like there is a different it isn’t, it’s still tales!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

What I been saying! but nooo they love to complain about it, and then buy the game anyway, then love it lol

    • Luna Kazemaru

I honestly don’t know what you was expecting you see. This IS the tales fanbase along with some people on this site are..well nvm :/

  • Michael Cadogan

I actually like Milla’s voice. I feel it fits her character more because she’s supposed to be a hardened warrior who shouldn’t show any emotion but then gradually opens up with Jude (which I’m sure the game will show as it goes on).

  • solbalmung

    Epic high five is epic!
Alvin voice suits him so well !!!!!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

turn it into a gif :D

  • Guest

    Heads up: Looks like Sam

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ahmad-Arzmi/1257407122 Ahmad Arzmi

Looks like Sam Riegel is hinting that he’s voicing Jude: https://twitter.com/samriegel/status/310886654011392002

  • XiaomuArisu

    Best High five Ever!
Lets give the dub a chance!
    Its sounds alright

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Release the storm

  • Kuhile Brodeur

Jude, Alvin, and Leia sound familiar but I just can’t think of who they are…

And I know Milla’s voice actor. It’s my dad.

  • roxas sora

huh……. just import the jap version and buy us version then undub yourself. That what i do anyway.beside i love tsubasa yonaga and miyuki sawashiro voice.and please dont force the stupid english dub vs jap undub to other people.they have their opinion. all of them sound alright(except milla in us dub.ughhh)

    • Tien Ron

thats alot of money you’re spending. but hey it’s going to tales so who am i to complain

      • roxas sora

it okay. it better than complaining.i willing to burn my pocket to tales series.

        • Tien Ron

and i must respect you for that. cause you are indeed doing something about it. when we all get tales lets complete it and talk about how good the game was! XD

          • roxas sora

            ok.let do that patner.

    • lemonjuice4000

Wouldn’t you need a hacked PS3 to play the undub version?

      • roxas sora

        this is your fault

    • M’iau M’iaut

Let’s not brag about the hacking of systems here. Thanks.

      • roxas sora

        sorry.

  • The Watcher

all we need now is a release date.

  • Alclieu

Looks like Sam Regal gets to be the Tales hero this time around. Been a while since he was the main character in something. Feel free to correct me on that.

As for Milla, bit too early to judge on just battle clips. Need a cutscene or something to help with that. Though maybe it -could- be Ali Hillis? Same applies to Leia, except for the Ali Hillis part.

Now Alvin, I think he’s voiced by Matthew Mercer.

Though now I kind of wonder who is going to end up being the one who gets to do all of Ludger’s voice grunts in the sequel! …haven’t played either so please don’t correct me on that.

    • Ferrick

ludger does have a voice… but on second playthrough (unlockable through the grade shop for 0 grade points)

      • Tien Ron

        omega please!!!! no spoiling XD

        • Ferrick

but its just grade shop, it doesn’t really spoil anything really =|, all the tales of games has it (oh and just to be sure, i’m not omegarevolution)

          • roxas sora

you use same avatar.maybe that because people misunderstand you.

          • Tien Ron

hahaha i knew you would say that hahahah XD

      • roxas sora

really?this is news to me.ok off to buy tales of xillia 2

        • Wappuli

Just be warned, even on the second playthrough he will only really talk at points where you decide what he says, in all other parts hes just “. . .” or some random grunt.
At least he yells out the names of hes moves even on the first playthrough.

    • Spirit Macardi

      It’s Riegel, not Regal x3

Didn’t really sound like him to me, but then this didn’t give the best display of the individual voices.

  • TheCrimsonSpeed

…yeah, while it’s not the WORST voice-over work I’ve ever heard (and it’s not really much to judge in the first place), I’m glad I had imported this when it came out in Japan. Something just sounds off about it to me personally. Though to be fair, like I said, I did import it, and it’s sequel, when they came out in Japan. So I already have a heavy attachment to their prior voices. If I came in fresh I’m sure they wouldn’t bother me as much, but as is…eh. I’ll wait to see more.

  • michel

I’m not truly a Namco Bandai type of player, I use to prefer Falcom stuff, but this trailer quite conviced me.
I hope that the fighting system is going to have some deepness.
Dual Audio option would also be great, in my opinion.

  • eilegz

hopefully there are japanese voice right? sigh well im ok vesperia dub and even FF dubs so i dont think this its going to be worse

  • Andrew McDowell

Behold the AWESOMENESS!!! Can’t wait for this and Time and Eternity, forget PS4, who’s gonna buy one with all of the great games coming out on PS3

  • HerosLight

    1:03 in the video.

Haha, awesome. I’ve been looking for this GIF.

      Thanks!

    • Mister_Nep

      This is awesome!

    • roxas sora

oh try find for jude and ludger too.

      • MrTyrant

THey have other? we need more funny posing.

        • roxas sora

oh but that for tales of xillia 2. it not cool as above though

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Haven’t saw tht lol. But if I come across one, sure.

    • Raltrios

      Eyyyyy!

    • puchinri

Is that for real? Like seriously? It’s actually in the game? Because I love that so much, and I will be so happy if it’s real. TTuTT

      • Wappuli

        Yes, it is quite real.
Just have Leia and Alvin linked together and they will do it all day.

        • puchinri

          I love it~.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Its in the trailer so yup.

    • Shinji Kazuya

      This is awesome :D

Looking forward to to the game even more now :3

    • Randy Marsh

Oh my friend, the lag you just created for this page….

    • Bob Stockalockapoulos

Dude, that celebration is awesome! I can’t wait for this game. I thoroughly enjoyed Graces F. Xillia should be the same.

  • DesmaX

Can’t wait for this one. I feel like there’s something… “off” with the voices (I don’t really know… It’s more about the audio than the VA’s, they’re doing a good job), but nothing that will stop me from buying the game

  • Spirit Macardi

I couldn’t recognize any of the voice actors (I think I heard Travis Willingham), though that could just be because in battle everything kind of jumbles together. Still, I rather like what I’ve heard so far and I’d like to see more of it.

Jude’s voice actor sounds a bit Bosch-y when shouting his attack names though, not that that’s a bad thing x3

    • MrJechgo

I’m pretty positive that Jude is voiced by Sam Riegal, a.k.a. Flynn Scifo from Vesperia.

      • Spirit Macardi

As I said in another comment it doesn’t sound like him to me, but then I’m used to either hearing his deep and threatening Viral tone or his campy and over-the-top Mephisto Pheles voice.

… Or his Barny-like Tristan voice XD

  • Richard N

    Comments in a Nutshell;
“I never liked english dubs and I don’t like this english dub.”

    • SerendipityX

      lol

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      HA

    • Luna Kazemaru

      You win the internet

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

One day, I’d like to see a publisher “localize” a game with no subtitles or English audio at all. Just release the Japanese version state-side. I’m sure that will put into perspective for a lot of people that they don’t understand Japanese, even if they want to convince themselves that anime has taught them all they need to know.

I know for a lot of people it’s just the “sound” of the Japanese audio that they like and can’t look past (and so do I, but only in a few very specific games), but others in the vocal minority–who are sadly louder and more annoying than everyone else–seem to have themselves convinced that they’d be fine playing the game in its purest form and wouldn’t be able to enjoy it any other way.

      • roxas sora

        that really legit statement.

      • Luna Kazemaru

and it would be a godlike bomb for a game to

      • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

        Awesome lol

        • roxas sora

you guys dont fight the mod huh?

          • Luna Kazemaru

You clearly must be new here.

          • roxas sora

no it just weird.the fight each other post but not mod. im not new here. it just i rarely comment and post anything

          • Luna Kazemaru

go check a DmC thread or a FF thread or a this week in sales thread then come back to me.

          • roxas sora

            ok done.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

            bullshit.

          • roxas sora

pop up boring answer?wait you not luna kazemaru

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

You posted “ok done” 1 minute after Luna Kazmaru asked you to check it out. I just called bullshit…unless you’re just saying “Ok done” for the sake of saying it…

          • M’iau M’iaut

I think he is saying that he is going to check out how the children acted in a DmC thread. Nothing more.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

then say that AFTERWARDS. The way he said it made me assumed he already done it..

          • roxas sora

dont be such a boring person.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

How is that being boring? Is it because I don’t participate in your ridiculousness like ShawnOtakuSomething? Really Roxas Sora?

          • roxas sora

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.i like being ridiculous then serious. it make my happy.^_^(what are you mad about?ohhh you are one of developer. sorry.)(or you just being nice.thanks)

          • roxas sora

            thanks.

          • roxas sora

that mean im lazy to check it . i already know what he want to say to me ok?(what are you ? stocke from radiant historia?)

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I don’t see how “ok done it” means your lazy. If you said something like “I’m too lazy to check it out” then this wouldn’t have happen. Then again I would have just said to think before you post.

          • roxas sora

huh?you want me to became hardworking?sorry my internet connection in my country and my home aren’t fast enought to motivated me to check it.beside i already read that thread 1 week ago. it annoying me.why would i read that again?

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

I’m not asking you to be “hard-working”, I’m asking you to make your sentence understandable.

Well then why don’t you say “I already read that article” than saying “ok done” as if you read the article after Luna told you to read it. You see what laziness do to your post? Honest to god here, if you’re going to make half-ass post like that then I suggest you don’t post at all. I’m sure typing 3 additional words wouldn’t hurt. This is going off-topic so I’m ending this. Go look at other articles here instead of being “motivated” to use your slow internet to reply to me.

          • roxas sora

ok thank you for your advice. i do that next time and im sorry for being stupid

          • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

            Lol

          • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Was there a need to fight him? I thought that his comment was legit and amusing. I honestly think people complain about the whole “Dual Audio” thing way too much. Sure it would be nice if you could please everybody, but that doesn’t and won’t always happen.

          • roxas sora

hahahha i kidding. it is legit.dual audio people is not japanese anyway.they just pretend to understand it. anyway i post it legit statement first at 15 minutes ago right?

          • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Oh? Hahahaha. Trying to ruffle my feathers a bit I see. Well you succeeded………….DON’T DO IT AGAIN!

            No, no, I kid =P

          • roxas sora

            im really sorry (bow)

          • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova
      • M’iau M’iaut

Just look at the absolute h*ll that has happened the few times there have been raw anime releases.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yep. When Bandai Entertainment released… what was it, Gurenn Lagaan… with subs only, and then released a dubbed version later on, people were FURIOUS, even though they’d been very open right from the start about there being two different releases.

There’s obviously far more people that prefer playing a game in a language that they understand. I don’t get why people can’t seem to understand this, especially in the case of games that have never historically had dual-audio.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Back when VHS meant only one lang on a tape, even Pioneer, who at the time had the ‘hardcore’ market of fan saw the English versions selling 10x or more those of the sub.

          • Yggdr5

Some food for thought: Anime on DVD still sells better than on Blu Ray outside of Japan. Many Anime releases in europe are only subbed. Virtue’s Last Reward (which is an awesome game btw.) has dual audio in North America and only the Japanese voice track in europe. All movies sold here in europe have dual audio and subtitles.

And regarding the quality of the english audio, I meant by no way to be insulting, I’m sorry if that came off wrong. It’s just that for obvious reasons there are a lot more voice actors in europe and japan than in america (most big movies are shot in english, no reason to dub them right?) and I read somewhere that voice acting wasn’t a rescpectable job in the us, I might have been wrong about that, so once again sorry.

On the other hand this is how I see it: I watch a lot of subbed anime, I’m used to the japanese voices. I even recognize some of the voice actors in games like ToX. And I have heard a lot of good things about the japanese dub in my twitter timeline and elsewhere in the net. So basically I know that the japanese dub is fine. And now everybody was/is on the fence “Will the english dub be good?”, which wouldn’t be an issue for me if the japanese track was still an option. And you can see for yourself when reading the other comments that not everybody is happy with the job Namco Bandai did.

Additionally the texts I’ll be reading won’t be english and english isn’t my native tongue. So what benefit does it yield for me if those japanese Anime characters are talking american english?

          • M’iau M’iaut

Check up a little on the divide between JP voice actors and JP live actors, if anything it is broader than in the states. Many of the actors from Ocean Studios (actually done in Vancouver, BC) are active in Canadian TV. The Texas and LA folks will show up in small parts from time to time, but many of those actually come from theater backgrounds.

          • Tien Ron

again your statement is fine, but i think the job they did is exellence and they make the right move by not adding japanese into the game if in future they do that’s fine aswell but america isn;t anime happy. it’s hard enough to sell it to non gamer its even worst when it is in another language its the reason i stopped watching one piece because they just stopped with the English voices… which sadden me. but i dont complain about it i just read the manga. issue solved on occasion i will watch the anime with subs. dual audio is a good idea but only when tales becomes more popular world wide like naruto has that option not tales unfortunely.

      • Micrll

It has been done before so that ‘one day’ has already come and gone :) http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/12/04/grab-6-gungho-psone-imports-on-psn-today/

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Not quite the same as releasing a full-priced retail game. :P

      • Cazar

Sorry but no. Nobody in their right mind thinks that listening to Japanese anime or game dubs will teach them the language. But for those in the process of learning, it can help with picking up some vocab and pronunciation.

As far as purism goes, the language of the text won’t tamper with anything unless there are translation inaccuracies in the dialogue. But even those with only basic elementary understanding of Japanese should be able to catch this most of the time. That’s one more reason people want Japanese audio with English text, they otherwise wouldn’t be able to catch the changes made through localization but of course wouldn’t be able to understand it if it were ALL Japanese. And unlike translated text (when done properly), voice acting is an artistic performance that many purists don’t want to see tampered with.

It’s also important to understand the dramatic difference in culture behind voice acting in Japan compared to most other countries. Seiyuu is one of the most coveted occupations in Japan and as a result has a higher standard in quality – at least as far as games and animated television are concerned. That’s not to mention that English redubs from other languages have significantly lower standards than original English dubs. They simply cannot compete with the Japanese voice acting industry. Some people will claim otherwise but in my opinion they just have bad ears for quality acting. For example, I’ve heard many times that English dub for Ni no Kuni was incredible and superior to the Japanese dub. The English dub is above average for a redubbed game, but nothing more. It faced the same struggles as Ghibli’s redubbed films. All while the Japanese cast is phenomenal but I suppose some people just don’t have ears for other languages.

tldr; While I understand that those who want dual audio in localized Japanese games are in the minority of all those who actually play them, their reasoning behind it is more than justified.

        People want dual audio because:

        - Some people are learning the language. Obviously they can’t learn from just listening to Japanese dubs but they can pick some things up which is never a bad thing.
        - Imports are an expensive alternative for those who want the original voice track and reading written Japanese dialogue is incredibly difficult for those without extensive knowledge in Japanese.
        - It is NOT about the “sound” of Japanese voices (except for maybe in the case of moe characters which just don’t work in English). It is about standard of quality. The prominence of voice acting in Japan and importance of original cast is not something to be taken lightly.
        - Some dialogue or emotion is at times lost in translation which can be picked up by listening to the Japanese audio even if your knowledge in the language is low.

  • Yggdr5

There seem to be a lot of misconceptions about the real reasons why a game features or doesn’t feature dual audio. So let’s clear things up:
    - Storage: Problems or additional cost for additional memory needed for a second voice track can arise, but only on cartridge based platforms and the 360.
    - Engineering effort: This is actually close to zero. It needs to be done, but the only thing that’s worth mentioning in regard to additional expenses is the additional quality/bug checking.
    - Reimports: This is no issue. It’s not attractive to japanese players to reimport a game months and years after it’s initial domestic release, with only english texts and roughly the same price (shipping+customs)
    - Licensing: This is indeed the single main reason some japanese games don’t feature dual audio: All original voice actors want additional fees for a worldwide release.

Another thing that struck me reading and discussing here: There seems to be a cultural difference of some sorts. It appears to me as if there are many americans who don’t mind a english only dub version, whereas people from europe like myself, who are used to a lot more subtitled media content, are more often the supporters of dual audio tracks.

Lastly it’s worth mentioning that there are a lot of companies that try to please all their fans and include the japanese voice track like Nintendo (Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem Awakeing), Aksys (Muramasa Rebirth, Virtues Last Reward), NIS (Neptunia, Atelier), etc.
The two main Publishers that come to my mind that ignore this are Atlus (which doesn’t even publish outside of NA) and Namco Bandai. And even Namco Bandai is beginning to change with Ni no Kuni, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 and (probably) even Project X Zone.

So it all comes down to this: Does the publisher respect the wishes of a big part of their fanbase for some extra cash they have to spend in the process or not.

PS: Not adressing the “alienating customers” and “then go and learn japanese” arguments because they aren’t worth adressing.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Leave the polemics of your last line elsewhere. ‘Alienating’ a customer can be a real issue if a company’s goal is to target a market beyond niche players who visit niche websites. Anime dub-only broadcasts make that market far more accessible, and thus even in reduced numbers from the anime boom, still larger than the number of folks likely to play this game.

Cost is also a far more complete package than you make it out to be. Is the cost of that complete package worth what pleasing ‘all’ the fans will bring in revenue? That enough companies doing hard work for our community have made the decisions that they have, tells me on what side of business side that choice lies.

EDIT: I’ve also noted you’ve been quite busy making these same comments repeatedly to everyone else on the board. Now that you have put those same comments together in one post, your point has been quite completely made.

      • Yggdr5

I’m honestly baffled. It’s a japanes anime like looking _J_RPG where even the box art screams “JAPANESE”. And now there would be an english voice track in any case either way and it would be the default voice track and you’d have to go into the options menu to even change it, how could this possibly in any way thinkable alienate customers who wouldn’t have bought the game in the first place?

And regarding your second argument: Like I said some companies want to see all their fans happy, they know that certain people buy games only with a japanese voice track and lastly: Do not only see this as a business decision where shareholder value is everything because games should be … fun!

        • Luna Kazemaru

Yeah and this company is making the fans happy by oh i don’t know “GIVING YOU ALL THE FUCKING GAME” the game could have stay Japan only but hey they only doing this to spit in you all’s face right?

          • Yggdr5

The price for the game in my region will be 80$. Am I really being entitled when I want the same content as in the original product after the localization when I’m paying that?

          • Luna Kazemaru

Yeah you are get over it simple.

        • M’iau M’iaut

When folks are looking to have fun they usually don’t want a lot of things to come between that fun. Having a game in English means they can use that 10 minute cut scene to make a sando or hit the head while still listening. They also don’t want hand-to-hand combat with a mass of menus in order to tell the game they want English-only, no subs.

That may not mean much to you or others, but it does mean something to a broader market. We don’t want only the same folks having fun with our niche — it is getting too expensive for only our niche to support everything we want. Let’s get more money and more folks into the community first, then we can deal with any sacrifices made to get them there.

  • KingRuff

I really don’t see how you can call yourself a fan of Tales and complain about voices, instead of just being happy we ACTUALLY GET THIS GAME.

Side Note: I don’t really see the problem with Milla’s voice. She sounds nothing like a guy, am I missing something?

  • Kotarou Tennouji

We’ve never got JP voices with any Tales game and people are still complaining… we all know we are not getting JP voices anytime soon if at all, so you would do good to just play the games…

    • Yggdr5

“You always got a inferior version, so why are you complaining this time too?”

      • Luna Kazemaru

Lol did you really just call the game inferior just because it doesn’t have Japanese voices boy i got the perfect term for you hun. Honestly that’s like saying the Japanese version is inferior because it doesn’t have X number of languages on the disk.

        • Jake Joe

What about the other DLC that never Comes to the State?

    • MrTyrant

We know you could just “rewrite” the game with voices and everything, try add some free dlc too.

      D:

      • Kotarou Tennouji

Aah I would if I could, but so far I’ve only been able to rewrite myself…
I’d say Prez has more power than me in this issue.

        • MrTyrant

Crap, if Tales were a FPS game we could have more posibilities.

  • Brimfyre

The English track is optional right?

I wish games would do what SFIV does and let you choose the voice track for each character. Then everyone could pick who they think the best voice for each character could be.

    • NightzeroAX

We’re not getting any option to pick which voice. Bamco Europe has confirmed this.

      • Yggdr5

Bur so far only the french branch (UK hasn’t heard anything yet) and the post is from November of last year?

        • Romored

There’s no difference, the edition is the same in all the European countries, so the UK one will be the same as the French one. And the post was referring to all Namco Bandai Europe, not just France.

        • NightzeroAX

While it is indeed from last year no tales game had an option to change voice why would they start now? This is Bamco we’re talking about. Though maybe just maybe I could be proved wrong and they somehow do a switch to Japanese “Free” DLC like Koei has done with Dynasty Warriors 7.

  • Raltrios

The only voice I don’t like is Milla’s. Yes, it should be a deep one, but this sounds almost manly. I like everyone else’s quite a bit, though.

I don’t even have a PS3 and I still plan to buy this day one. I can afford to get one, but my family probably wouldn’t approve when I should be saving up for college and to move out… I suppose I’ll have to ask sooner or later…

  • http://www.facebook.com/trillersmi Steven Triller

They can do so much better by including the original Japanese vocal track………….I don’t care much for this voice-acting………..well…….it is a Tales game which means I will be getting it……..I would hope the Western version of this game has duel Japanese/English Audio……….I can only hope that they considered their fans this time……..

    • raymk

The western version? This is the western version and if going by namco usual standards I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  • M’iau M’iaut

We are quickly moving from the realm of passionate opinion to personal attacks here folks. That isn’t what our community is, think before posting. We won’t continue giving individual warnings or deletes for each individual case, regardless of the side you are ‘coming from’.

    • Yggdr5

I agree. I also can understand the reasoning behind the removal of the japanese voice track (Not that I like it). And I respect the opinion of other people. But what really got me riled up were those “The game shouldn’t have dual audio” comments. That’s not nice, we’re all fans of the same game, shouldn’t we all get to enjoy the game? I’m not going everywhere posting “The game should have the japanese voice track only”.
      Just my 2 cents.

      • M’iau M’iaut

And if you left things as this post here, none of the explosions would have happened. ‘This is what I would like’ can be talked over — saying ‘English VAs are not professional actors’ or insinuating what the ‘real’ fan wants — are I am sorry, not something where much discussion can be held.

      • Tien Ron

we can all enjoy the game it’s just people who just cant accept having English voices but yet want this dual audio thing??? like games don’t normally have it so why it is such a big issue, japan donsnt have it so why do we? look it’s as simple as if you want the Japanese get it. if you want the English get it. don’t deal not oh have english subs and Japanese dub that donsnt make sense.

    • roxas sora

      im sorry

  • AlyOssan

As soon as I saw the title of the article I clicked it expecting a treasure trove of dub wank in the comments.

I wasn’t disappointed. Thank you, Siliconera.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Yes, most epic high five ever =). I think they did a good job on the dubs, yes even Milla’s voice lol. Her voice fits her personality in my opinion.

  • NightzeroAX

Despite what I’ve said about Milla which I know will most likely grow on me overtime I’m happy the game has english voices because if it didn’t the game would most likely be digital. I like having physical copies of my games. Here’s what im talking about when i mean the game goes digital: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/02/16/warriors-orochi-3-for-ps3-is-digital-download-only-in-the-us/

  • Ni

I knew it! Siliconera coments would be at the same level of the YT ones.

  • MrJechgo

Wow… what’s with the comments and the fan rage? Seriously…

For me, I like the voices, although I can’t tell right away if Milla’s voice is ok or not. I’ll need to hear her outside of battle before judging her. Then again, the voice itself isn’t that bad, not has ever been a badly dubbed Tales game lately.

Sam Riegal as Jude is alright, Alvin’s and Leia’s voices are alright, although I can’t tell who are the actors. Milla comes out as a little bit flat, but not that much off from the Japanese version. She does talk in a rather monotonous tone anyway.

Finally, to those who ae asking for Japanese dubs, it’s not happening folks. They said that they would like to add it in future titles, but right now, they have to ship not just an English version with voices and texts, but also with French, Spanish, German and Italian texts as well, leaving barely any room for the Japanese dubs, with all the work that they need to make it work properly.

    • Firekitty

…? Text takes up very little space, and even if that wasn’t the case, Xillia is only about 6GB in size; they could probably fit *voice* tracks for all of those languages, *plus* Japanese and still have space left over.

If you mean they have to do the translation and programming for all of that, well, translation isn’t done by programmers, and neither is English voice acting, and both things take time. They had more than enough time to program in cues for a second language while waiting for everything else to be completed, and I sincerely doubt it would have cost all that much more to do.

All these devs promising they’ll ‘try’ to include dual audio in ‘the next’ release are just having us on. They said the same thing about the LAST set of games, and the last before that, all the way back to FFX on the PS2. At first it was honestly a matter of space, but now it’s just plain laziness, or not wanting to pay the programmers working on the localization to put in a few extra hours.

      • MrJechgo

Say what you will, but just because it would have fit doesn’t mean it would have worked. Programming sound is harder than it looks BTW. You can’t just swap clips with a condition such as: “If language is set to English, play English voice clip.” These days, the games automatically switch the language depending on your console, while before that, you could go into the Options and switch it there. With the console, however, that can get multiple issues that might need to be addressed. The best solution is simply to swap Japanese dubs with English dubs and many sound issues will be addressed.
You also have to understand that people that want Japanese dubs are in the minority compared to the actual market. Japanese dubs aren’t gonna move copies even if it’s dual audio. For an International game, just the fact that people can understand the game in English is a better deal than “being able to play with the Japanese dubs”.
Finally, localizing isn’t cheap at all, so calling it “laziness” is completely uncalled for. It can easy go as costly as the developping the game itself. If you add Japanese dubs on top, that’s even higher due to paying for the rights to use them.
Yes, it has been done before, such as Xenoblade Chronicles. However, both Nintendo and Monolith Soft has TRUCKLOADS of cash. They CAN afford such extras like dual audio. Namco Bandai can’t. However, they want to, but still can’t because of other stuff that keep piling on top, such as translating the game in multiple languages.
I can understand not playing the game because it’s bad, but not playing the game because it doesn’t come with dual audio with a language that only certain people understand while the rest is good is just ridiculous.
If you want bad dubs, try Arc Rise Fantasia and Chaos Wars. Tales of Xillia 1 is far from being bad compared to these 2 games. Beside, the actors we have today when it goes for video games and anime series are much, MUCH better than people give them credit for.

  • raymk

I don’t find any issue with Milla’s english voice, its like females can’t have deep voices or something. Milla is a tuff chick and having a deep voice fits her.

    • NightzeroAX

A sexy female character with a deep voice? If your into that more power to ya.

    • Leon_Tekashi

Mitsuru from Persona 3 would like to say hi to you…EXECUTION!

Can’t. Wait. I’m so excited for this game. Why is there no release date yet?! >_<

    • NightzeroAX

Hopefully they are fixing the bugs that came from the first game.

  • FFmax

What’s is taking this game so long? Hopefully they’re using this time to dub the sequel as well.

  • hawk222

“This video has been removed by the user.”

    Well nuts. .__.

  • Demeanor

Mmm I find the voices generally ok, here’s my individual thoughts:
Jude: far more gutsy/aggressive then the Jude I know, I find it lacks Jude’s attitude for peace and compassion
Mira: far too cold!!! Mira IS a woman beyond ordinary people, but her voice is brimming with warmth and should give her a more dreamy feel. I hope there’s more to the few lines I heard
Alvin: SPOT ON! Perfect voice, if I were to be picky I’d say it lacks a liiiitle bit of Alvin’s “joking” tone
Reia: ok for the most part, but I feel it could use some more playfulness and klutziness, she sounds… direct and efficient to me :P
“Saki ni susumou!” Aaah the memories… XD

    • puchinri

Your opinions sound pretty spot-on to me.

  • puchinri

I’m really just depressed at the lack of dual audio because of the seiyuu that I love (that I’m going to be missing out on). But I’m just glad we’re getting the game and I’ll buy it.

  • Sesshomaru

Who are the voice actors? I can only find the Japanese ones..

    • MrJechgo

Might take a while before they are revealed. Namco doesn’t tell the English voice actors’ names in the credits. Best way to do so is, well, to ask the actors themselves when you have the chance. Think Sam Riegal voiced Jude Mathis? Ask him at a panel… although, after his Twitter response, he pretty much told everyone that he has been cast as Jude.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Oh. The YouTube video got removed…..
Well considering the amount of unnecessary bitching there was in the comments section (for YouTube that is), I guess it was only a matter of when the removal would happen….. A shame… -_-

Damn it I’m too late! The video has been taken down….

    • MrJechgo

It has be re-uploaded by other users on YT. The video was actually taken down by the user himself, probably due to the comments, not due to copyright infringements.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I come here expecting the crazy amount of backlash toward the English dub.

Boy i am suprised here. I never seen the complain on this huge level.T_T

Can’t we just enjoy the game here? If you guys really wanted the Japanese dub,J ust go buy the Japanese one here. If you guys feel that you can’t understand the story then buy another U.S version and finish it mute. With this, you get both of the version there.

  • HPN

Tales historically has bad dubs. This will be no different.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Ng/100000854638739 Dylan Ng

Lol NO. Vesperia and Graces sounds pretty good to me. For example I prefer Karol dubbed voice more than the original one.

  • Maumac77

I choose the third option. This comment. But seriously if this is all it takes for yo to consider this a “lost generation,” then clearly you haven’t been in america, much less kept up with the “news” in the past 2 years

  • Tien Ron

your lost! because you want Japanese voice but too lazy to go learn it?

  • Oltheros

Again with the accusations…I never said I was in favor of downloading undubs without supporting the developers/publishers. Though I do think it’s great that undubbers know what they want and are able to achieve it. Publishers/devs need to realize that the functionality undubbers seek should be included.

As for “no tales for me”..that’s fine; none of my money for Namco then.

  • roxas sora

get lost then.publisher dont have money for dual audio.just donate 2 million to namco then you deserve to complain them

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Stop this. There’s no need for insults.

  • Kaihedgie

Sorry about that, but this guy really was annoying me >:

  • Tien Ron

ishaan this guy is bringing negativity to this thread, @disqus_KJE1ZBQNrX:disqus this is a tread for the English release ok?! you don’t like it that’s totally fine. get the Japanese version simple? i cant even enjoy this news without someone coming up with the whole dual audio thing it’s such a selfish thing to say.

  • Oltheros

So I only deserve to have a voice when I donate $2 million?

And money is not the only factor here, but I can assure you Namco has plenty of it as a whole entity.

  • M’iau M’iaut

    Enough with the insults. Warned.
