Drakengard 3 / Drag-On Dragoon 3 In Development For PS3

By Spencer . March 12, 2013 . 3:28pm

drakenFamitsu has a pretty big scoop this week. The magazine revealed Drakengard 3 aka Drag-on Dragoon 3 is in development. The game will be an action RPG and two lead characters were introduced, according to an early leak from Tale Tale source.

Zero has a special power called Utautai and flowers grow from her right eye. Zero’s left hand is a prosthetic hand and she has a violent and reckless personality. One is the exact opposite of her sister, serious in nature and an intellectual.

Details about platforms and the developer (since Cavia was dissolved into MarvelousAQL) haven’t leaked online yet. We’ll update this post with more information.

Update: Drakengard 3 is a PlayStation 3 title. Players will fight battles on the ground. Zero’s power allows her to unleash magical attacks by singing. You can use Utautai song powers when you bathe in blood which pushes your fighting power to the limit. An earlier version of the story mentioned One had a prosthetic left hand, but that’s actually Zero

Update 2: More details available here.

Aw man, Cavia isn’t around anymore? Huge bummer – they proved with Nier that they could carry the spirit of Drakengard onward even without the name. The odds of another developer recapturing that same spirit even having been given the official name to develop under seems slim.

But if Cavia can’t be making Cavia games, the next best thing is somebody else trying to carry on the legacy I suppose.

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Well hey, on the bright side, it is possible to carry on the concepts of a series even after the creator’s input has left. Granted, it could go both ways depending on how it’ll be handled, but at least there’s a possibility.

    • Yannick Ho

That’s the huge problem with games having legacies, people expect some recurrent elements while improving on others and introducing to new ones. Unless it’s made by the same studio, it is really really hard to keep the same kind of design or mood. Again, if Square manage to find a studio who are fans of this franchise this could help a little bit if not a lot (looking at you Sanzaru Games (Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is oustanding Sly material. Great job!)

    • SpecDotSign

Square is rounding up the old team to make this game!

  • DesmaX

    Now that was unexpected

EDIT: Wow, for the PS3 too!? I was expecting this to be a portable game, or something.
I only played NiER from Cavia, and I loved it. Hope it (at least) plays like it… Even though it’s not the same developer now

    • NightzeroAX

You should some how get the first game and play it as it mind rapes you.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

Make it more like the first one and consider it a day-one purchase. I LOVED DRAKENGARD.

    • Victoria [Rokuso3]

      MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.

      • Yannick Ho

And you’re not the only one. :D

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

    YES!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Wait, DOD is a Square Enix game… iOS?

  • JonathanisPrimus

    It’s for PS3.

  • Alex Sargeant

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=510066

From GAF a couple months back. I guess that’s this then. At least it’ll have a budget.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Welp, time to finally play the other games.

  • http://vanilladice.deviantart.com/ Dice
  • SpecDotSign

My first thought: “OMG OMG OMG!”
After reading that Cavia is not making it: “ahhhh man…OMG NEW DRAKENGARD! But sucks no Cavia :(”

  • William Carpenter

WOAH, this is super cool news. But who’s the developer? Cavia is no more, right? =(

  • Arizato

I might buy this if it comes to the west. I haven’t played the other Drakengard games, but I got NIER and read that it followed one of Drakengard’s endings. Which is in itself really awesome.

    • brian

It actually followed an ending in the first Drakengard, they’re both sequels to certain ending in that game.
      Have you beaten Nier?

      • Arizato

Oh, sorry. Mixed them up. I’ve just beaten the first ending in NIER.

    • Ferrick

no, it followed the first drakengard’s ending, and in nier, you will get one of Caim’s swords, though the backstory of the sword will be different than when obtained in drakengard

      • Arizato

Sorry. Mistake corrected. I don’t know who this Caim is since I haven’t played any Drakengard game.

        • Ferrick

Drakengard 1′s silent (in a way) Protagonist

  • epy

This is the first time I’ve been shocked by an announcement in a long time. It’s a good feeling.

    • Yannick Ho

And many more to be announced… Brace yourself, E3/TGS is coming.

  • SirRichard

Entirely out of the left field, this one, but I welcome it. Only ever played the first game, but I really liked it for all its problems.

I’d guess that with Cavia out of the picture, it’s either Square Enix developing it themselves, or they’ve off-loaded it on someone else like Tri-Ace. Still, I’m hopeful.

    • CirnoTheStrongest

Tri-Ace would be a great choice!

      • brian

In terms of plot, not really, or maybe I played too much Star Ocean.

        • CirnoTheStrongest

Star Ocean 3 had the most horrid final sequence, but other than I’ve loved all the Star Ocean’s plots ~

        • RPGRocker

Fortunately the scenario writer and music composer from Nier are confirmed, so as long as tri-Ace stays out of their way it would be a perfect team. tri-Ace makes really FUN games but usually fails in the story department.

      • Yannick Ho

I agree with this comment. They make some really really interesting JRPGs.

  • CirnoTheStrongest

Main character is a songstress, with a cyborg imouto. It’s an Action RPG. All I could ask from them at this point would be lolis and catgirls really.

I really wanna know more about this! Action RPGs need to come back into the spotlight!

  • yellowmage

Well, that I was not expecting.

Played the first game, haven’t played the second. I think the Grotesqueries freaked me out too much. Though that one (non-canon) ending where Caim and Angelus end up in modern-day Tokyo and get shot down by fighter jets is hilarious!

    • Vulpis

IIRC, isn’t that ending actually *canon* as the setup for NIER?

      • yellowmage

It is? I’d heard that NieR takes place in the same universe as Drakengard, but nothing specific.

        • Wtv

That one is canon for Nier. The first ending is canon for Drakengard 2. Drakengard 3 should follow the second game, so…I don’t think nothing will follow Nier. But well…I thought nothing would follow Drakengard either.

  • cloudcaelum

    OMG!!!

    SE suprise me like that!!!

  • LynxAmali

My body wasn’t ready. At all.

    • Yannick Ho

      So is mine… XD

  • Solomon_Kano

Oh. My. God. Oh my God. Oh my God!

I don’t know about anybody else, but this is the most surprising announcement I’ve heard this gen. You don’t know how much I loved Drakengard, so this is pretty much the biggest thing to me. I can’t even.

Thank you, Square Enix. Holy shit.

    • brian

      This a billion gajillion times.
      edit: but what if it never gets localized? ;n;

      • Raos

I’d import it even if I have to use a guide or web translation

      • Solomon_Kano

I’d play this in any language. I’m so happy that this is happening that nothing could stop me from playing.

That said, let’s hope it gets localized! I mean, we did get the first two and Nier.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1598149010 Rayhan PromisedGallery

the god is giant babies you know

      • Solomon_Kano

        Let us thank them!

    • http://www.facebook.com/dylan.justice1 Dylan Justice

I know exactly what you mean! This is awesome!

  • Luis Camargo

Any chances for Nier 2 then ?
Should I hang to this as a slimmer of hope ?

    • Yannick Ho

Unless Square manages to find a studio willing to do it and come with a great final product, I wouldn’t hold much this slim hope. Again, unless Square tries to test/gauge the interest for this franchise among the gaming community with a new game in the line.

  • Randy Marsh

Please no air battles, please no air battles, please no air battles…..

    • Yannick Ho

~ AIR BATTLES brought to you to whole a new level of Epic Dragon Riding fights! XD (Quote seen on the back cover)

      • Randy Marsh

Darn it, my rage shall continue when playing these games.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1598149010 Rayhan PromisedGallery

it won’t be drakengard without air battles…

  • Sentsuizan_93

Didn’t see this coming. At all. O_o
Almost as surprising as Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei crossing over. If not, more!

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

Holy shit. Bring back Caim. Don’t care how. Excited.

    • Yannick Ho

Didn’t they both him and Angel~whatever her name die in Drakenguard 2?

      • Göran Isacson

They did. And it was heartrending to see them finally find peace… which may be why I want them back, because Drakengard is suffering. Endless suffering for everyone involved, and having a peaceful end isn’t suffering :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

Will it be dark like Drakengard 1? I want to see a main character who gleefully kills anyone in his way. I want a diversity of colourful nutters.

    • Chiupon

      her*

and she’s covered in blood and sings while murdering people so i’m pretty sure we’ve got a yandere on our hands

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

Singing? Booooo! I want a mute violent warrior who kills with his sword and a fire-breathing dragon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Pierson/1152517641 David Pierson

Um… wow, consider me surprised. Square-Enix actually developing a PS3 exclusive? And a game that I actually really want to play?! Am I dreaming here?

If the story is half as good as the first game, then this will be high on my list of must own games.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

As long as Motomu Toriyama is nowhere near the game, it’ll be something for fans to look forward to.

      • Yannick Ho

        Indeed… :D

  • Warboss Aohd

…..can’t say i saw dis comin’, keepin’ an eye on dis.

  • Mildra

I can safely say I did not see this coming at all. While I’m not gonna get too excited just yet (due to my trailer or GTFO policy), you can bet i’ll be keeping an eye out with great interest.

Both Drakengard 1 and 2 were awesome games, and there’s been a significant lack of dragons in my game library.

  • Haunting Horror

Oh my! YAY! I am SO happy about this! I really liked the 2 (I guess I’m one of the few who liked the 2nd the best) and somehow managed my way through the 1st (grotesqueries, I’m looking at them for being so hard to beat. >.>). I really hope we get to see all the charas, specifically Caim, Nowe, Manah, Angelus, and Legna in some way.

  • Visa Vang

YES!!! Now got those HD releases of the 2 prequels and I’ll put on some vacation time and go on an marathon!!!

    • Yannick Ho

What do you think of HD remake of these two? What if Drakenguard 3 was actually a next-gen reboot for PS4? (Crossing fingers… for AWESOMENESS!!)

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Square just earned some serious nerd cred, hahaha. Can’t wait to see more!

    • YuanMori

Square isn’t responsible for the Drakengard series, they just publish.

      • Yannick Ho

They are now since this franchise belongs to them I believe.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

And as the publisher, they get to decide whether or not a new game gets made at all, let alone who’s making it. :P

  • Ferrick

nerdgasm… i’m very happy that drag on dragoon will continue on =P, just hope that whoever takes this on will do it properly =3

  • MrTyrant

YESSSSS!!! Motherfucking Drakengard! On of those gems that I always expected to return.

    http://imageshack.us/a/img208/8973/icamew.jpg

  • http://alboreo.tumblr.com Alboreo

Oh man, this is so unexpected but awesome. I love the Drakengard games. Such a cool setting/theme.

  • cloudcaelum

Now i just want Legend of Dragoon 2. :(

  • ryne11

Is this a sequel to Drakengard or Drakengard 2?
I hope it is good. Makes me with we could get a Nier 2 or something of the sort, but this still makes me happy

Any word on 1 and 2 being released on PSN?

  • MrJechgo

    Where’s the dragon part???

  • Pockystix

    goddamn

that’s gonna be awesome. . . who is making it though?

    • Yannick Ho

No official announcement yet… it is either kept for later this month or for E3 and/or Tokyo GameShow. But I share your enthusiasm.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    Welp. Best morning news lol.^_^

    • Yannick Ho

Good morning!! You may find some others that could revigorate your morning joy.. :D

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Haha. Indeed lol. With new Danball Senki coming to 3DS, i think my munney is going to get spammed again lol.^_^

  • kroufonz

this is very good news now I hope it would be followed by VP3 announcement in near future

and also probably PS3 finally getting (non FF, non remake) exclusive JRPG for the first time this gen from squarenix:P

  • MagisterXII

Amazing and unexpected news! One of my favorite game series, can’t wait to hear more. Too bad there’s no more Cavia and hopefully they stay true to the first 2 games. I’m looking forward to some badass ground and aerial combat!

  • Aoshi00

Very good news. I love both Drakengard and Nier to death, got all the artbooks, OSTs, & drama CDs.. Sad that Cavia’s no longer around, but I hope some of the staff would come back for this, like Yoko Tarou..At least the design looks to be by Fujisaka Kimihiko, the same artist who did Drakengard 1/2 and the Last Story. Looking forward to a dark and twisted story worthy of the Drakengard/Nier universe.. the girl in the background looks like Jean D’arc :)

    • Solomon_Kano

Yoko Tarou is indeed back to direct this one! The designs are indeed from Fujisaka. The producer is even the one from Drakengard. The game’s being developed by the studio behind Deadly Premonition, Access Games.

      • Aoshi00

That’s awesome news, he was a good writer/director (I would hate to see him being made to do cellphone games or something), and people were worried Toriyama Motomu would lay his fingers on this lol.. I haven’t played Deadly Premonition though, seems like a cult hit w/ the Twin Peak feel (for some reason I bought it and then sold it, didn’t like the 360 cover). But w/ Yoko at the helm and Fujisaka being the artist, sounds like a promising sequel to me :) This is probably as good as Nier 2.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I haven’t played DP myself. I’m waiting on the PS3 version, which is slated for some time in the next few months iirc.

Having all of the essential folks back is perfect. Lord knows I’d have cried my eyes out if Toriyama got his hands on this lol.

  • popyea

I hope the music is like the first game. I’ll buy it just for that.

  • Levin_Scorpius

Please tell me this will be more like NiER in all aspects, especially the characters and story. Drakengard was a bad game that’s only real redeeming point is the absolutely insane drugged up plot, and Drakengard 2 was better graphically and gameplay wise then Drakengard, but it’s characters were COMPLETE idiots in every sense and the story basically existed solely because they had an IQ of less than 5. Drakengard 2 also had the mellow version of Growing Wings which is a good song.

Basically if this game wants any good, it needs to be NiER 2. And Taro Yoko needs to have a hand in it because he is probably insane and wants to feast upon your misery and tears (also he is responsible for NiER and Drakengard).

Also whoever composed NiER’s soundtrack must return. I will except no one else. NO ONE.

    • Pekola

Over at Gematsu, they mentioned Okabe will return for the OST. And he was the one who basically directed the whole music scene in Nier. So you’ve been heard.

And I hope they bring over someone on the same caliber as Emi Evans into the whole mix. Her vocals are just spectacular.

  • Watahashi

Best news I’ve heard in ages. My hype levels are already at maximum.

  • Chiupon

i cannot contain my feels right now.
    badass heroine looks badass too.

  • Valtiel Ikari

hope they make the ending with manha sacrefice canon so you can have a full out war of new type dragon riders vs the gods!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1598149010 Rayhan PromisedGallery

    what? female protagonist?
hopefully she’s a badass like Caim and Nier, not some pussy like No-way

ONE OF MY MEMORABLE GAME SERIES
Bring on Dragons and GIANT BABIES!!

    • Pekola

It was only a matter of time until the giant babies got a mention. Lol.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Cavia was dissolved and became Marvelous, lolz

Bathing in the blood of my enemies and pushing my powers to the limit seems like something I’d be into. I can’t wait =^_^=

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1598149010 Rayhan PromisedGallery

i’m hoping there won’t be separate versions of game with Mama Zero & Sister Zero LOL

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Let’s keep this nonsense out of here, please. Stay on track.

  • epy

How was that nonsense? Well, whatever.
