Square Enix released more artwork of Zero, the dragon riding protagonist with a flower in her eye, and One, her rational and justice seeking younger sister. Both Drakengard 3 characters are "Utatai" who can use magical songs on the battlefield.

Kimihiko Fujisaka who worked on The Last Story and the two other Drakengard titles reprises his role as a character designer in Drakengard 3. The action RPG is scheduled for a 2013 release on PlayStation 3.

Goodness, those environments look good! If it really ends up looking like this, I’m down for it. The cityscape could afford more colour, but the plot tends to be a little dark anyway. Something too colourful might end up feeling mismatched.

PS3 / XBOX 360? This game never told it will release in xbox360, please fix this and not giving false hope for 360 user.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

That could be a stretch. More and more companies are starting to release PS3 only versions in JPN. But we haven’t heard of any localization plans yet so maybe it could be multi platform if it does come west…

Edit: Nvm, I see what you meant. Yea, that Xbox 360 tag should be removed, for now until they say otherwise…

  • Ben Chau

    One really looks like Manah

    • AnimusVox

My thoughts exactly. That can’t be coincidence.

      • maybe daughter of Manah and No-Way?
        i hope not though…

        • Soroth23

This is a prequel, so not likely. I can see how u would think it looks likes her, blonde hair and red eyes, but other then that I dont see it.

    • gRiMmYdArK13

I was thinking the same thing! She really resembles her 6 year old version rather than the older version.

    • Will she grow gigantic at one point of the game?

  • Go2hell66

Gosh the in game graphics do not do this artwork justice

    • Whoomp

Yes because concept art takes about the same time to do as in game assets while still retaining detail.

    • Hans Satori

16 idiots updated this comment.. *shrugs* modern gamers

  • XypherCode

    Dat detail! O_O

    • Aoshi00

Yeah, looks beautiful indeed. I’ve loved Fujisaka ever since Drakengard.. his work on Last Story was so detailed (the armor pieces and weapons). Then his more cartoony Sonic-like Party Wave design was cool too, but I’m glad he went back to his art style in Drakengard 3. He was actually the artist of Sakaguchi’s “Cry On” (girl w/ the stone golem) too but that project didn’t materialize..

I hope this would come w/ an artbook as a pre-order bonus, if not I would totally be buying the artbook and soundtrack separately just like Drakengard and Nier :)

not to be nitpicky, but come on, songstress is “Utautai” (ウタウタイ), not Utatai lol..

      • XypherCode

Yeah I’m really cool for a pre-order bonus. You think Ubisoft will be the one to publish the game again in the west? :))

        • If the game does well, they would be stupid not to lol

        • Aoshi00

I forgot Ubisoft published Drakengard 2 here.. I think S-E would publish it themselves here just like the first game and Nier.. any bonus from Gamestop or Amazon would be cool.. if it were XSeed, they always throw in an artbook or soundtrack :)

      • Rayneth Leung

        yup yup yu

  • if only the gameplay graphics look as godly as this, Drakengard 3 will be godlike.

Yoko Taro and Drakengard Team really deserves award

  • badmoogle

The artwork is very nice but the ingame screens…:/

  • isfuturebright

Never played any from this series… It loos like Dynasty Warriors. Is it worth playing the first ones?

    • i won’t recommend it if you’re looking for gameplay and graphics, the stories and characters has always been the strongest point of Drakengard Series and Nier.

the gameplay is meh if you compared to DW series.
If you want to watch such a dark and unpredictable stories, play it!!

      • neocatzon

oh, you don’t like the gameplay. Personally, I love how they made defense and items important, different attributes for weapons, also the dragon bit~

        • don’t get me wrong, i always love gameplay of hack and slash of DW games. Combined with dragon riding it’s just fun

i just won’t recommend it to many people, especially for people who looks for complex gameplay. Since complaints of this series has always been repetitive gameplay, and its comparison to musou series.

i just don’t want to posting a biased-comment saying this games is fun in every way.

    • neocatzon

Even though they also have a bit of hack and slash, Drakengard series is totally different to DW series. Nier is the closest thing to Drakengard. Think about a third person action rpg mixed with hack and slash plus panzer dragon. The dragon riding part is the game main selling point imo. They are really worth it because of dragons, nice story and gameplay. While the graphics usually on the meh side, you can find many who loves this series..

  • That Spider might be another Pact-beast. Can’t wait to see more.

    • LegendaryLos

I really hope this is the case.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

At least no one can argue that the artwork and characters don’t look beautiful.

Edit: Now I remember. When I initially saw the top piece of art (before submitting my eyes to those screenshots…), I was thinking they would use a graphic style similar to the artwork. Or in another sense, make it look like Koei’s Musou RPG “Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll”, with its semi-watercolor painted look. I was very wrong…

    • Syn

Thats very true right there, the artist who did these is truly something

  • If you look closely above the huge flowers you can see arcane runes of the characters of “X”s and “U”s. Among others.

  • Kairo Fujima

One is Manah or a distant relative of Manah. Calling it.

  • Guest

    woops my bad :( ..

anyway .. i’m really really excited for Darkengard 3 ~

  • Cephrien

    Zero is Kaine.

  • Chiupon

as someone who’s into fashion, Zero’s shoes really please me
like girl is workin’ wedges on the battle field

    that deserves respect.

  • Hm, we don’t get many games with two girls as the main characters, let alone sisters.

    • Vash bane

must didn’t hear of Onechanbara Z then huh?

      • Too obvious to even mention. Anything else?

        • Vash bane

          fatal frame 2?
(last thing to come to mind)

  • Göran Isacson

Have to admit I’m loving the thought of fighting a giant thunder-spider as a pact-beast boss… and the lighting in that “sunken city” concept art. The ruined skyscrapers makes me kinda curious though, how did buildings of that size spring up in a borderline medieval world? Once more, little will be as it seems…

And man, people are right- One really looks similar to Mana. I like how her outfit looks semisensible what with boots and clothes and all EXCEPT for her weapon, whereas Zero has a comparatively simple sword but goes all out on skimpy outfits, robot-arm, impossible shoes and flowers in her eye.

  • The concept art looks beautiful, and character design is great as well =^_^=

No they don’t do the in game graphics justice at the moment, but don’t bash it until you see the game in action first. Come on people, I thought we were past things like this already.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I can’t wait to had my Panzer Dragoon goodness where i can burn all my enemies with a flower girl lol.^_^

  • Ryan Chiu

As much as I’m excited about the new Drakengard, I originally liked the series because of Caim and Angelus. So sad that they’re not in this at all (no matter how unlikely that would be).

  • prometheus126

I see Zero and One and I can’t help but notice how similar they look to Manah and Nowe.

  • Soroth23

Just have to say, for a game that is almost 80% complete theres almost no real GOOD information on it. mostly just stuff we have already heard and yet more screen shots. Personally, I want to see a voice cast. I wonder if they have set up their whole cast yet.
