Lightning Returns With New Overclock Ability That Freezes Enemies

By Spencer . March 18, 2013 . 1:13am

light2ad Jump has an article on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII that reveals a new area called the Dead Dune. This is a huge desert area sprinkled with ruins.

Lightning has to fight through monsters solo in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. If Lightning finds herself in a pinch she can use the Overclock ability to gain the upper hand. This skill freezes enemies at the cost of GP. GP is a new stat in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII tied to recovery magic.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release this fall on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

So Lightning can Clock Up now, interesting.

    • not sure if i’m correct but is that a kamen rider kabuto reference?

      • Sakurazaki

  • Raze

    Wrong game…Sorry…

  • Tien Ron

reminds me of the first ever 13 trailer where she had that ability, guess they’re bringing it back now

    • my thoughts exactly. slowing down time fighting some doggies

    • Göran Isacson

Did she have that ability in battle, or in a cutscene? IT’s been so long that I’ve honestly forgot.

  • Nitraion

Solo chara fighting and time power why soo remind me of TokiTowa?

    • STOP!..don’t mention tokitowa!

  • Isaac Newton

So the magic “Stop” is just not sufficient eh.

    • Randy Marsh

Well, in the FFXIII games the Stop spells just reset ATB bars.

  • komiko12

Hehe.. better get her cooling fans..

  • Göran Isacson

That desert’s looking pretty cool, but I do wonder if GP is going to be different from “MP” and if so, why they decided on that. Can’t say it sounds very engaging.

Watch this game release the last day of Fall in November, as it seems this game is still not very far in development considering we have less than 9 months till release and they havent even given us a real trailer yet and by real, I mean a normal trailer for Square that shows returning characters (that two liner from Noel doesnt count), spoileriffic story details, anything more than Luxerion, and above all, a trailer that lasts over a minute and a half (which even the extended trailer didnt do with all its focus on spinning clocks and logos and such),

Though I am excited to get this and for it to come out, I think its more so that Lightning’s story will finally be FINAL (pun intended) and this saga of Final Fantasy will finally be over, and they can FINALLY move on to something else, be-it Vs, or something new altogether, I’m just sick of their focus on “Lightnings story”. May be why I loved XIII-2 so much, because although it was positioned to be a story about Light, it was more about Serah, Noel, Yuel, Caius, and the overall mythology, than it was about Lightning (a good thing in my opinion).

But on topic, good to see the Overdrive system back in place, as that was one of the coolest features of the battle system from the original trailer! Wanna see how they implement that in this installment! And the sand dunes look Idunno, brown (which i guess makes sense considering it is the sand dunes, makes sense I guess) so um yay for that too i guess.

    • ShadowDivz

I guess that raises the question of “What will be their next project”.

I keep hoping they will release a GOOD Crystal Chronicles game like the one on Gamecube. The ones on DS are good. But the GC one was amazing.

I doubt it will be versus though. They are probably gonna release it right when people are like “Screw final fantasy, im done with that series” then BAM! versus announced.

  • New …huh? ¬ ¬
wonder what we’ve seen years back then… oh well guess it doesn’t matter anymore.

  • Gaara D.Dragon

I’m slowly warming up to this game.

The graphics look better and the abilities sound interesting.

  • Solomon_Kano

We need s’more footage. I want to be excited, so show us something already, SE!

  • Let’s just hope the countdown will be removed whenever the game goes into Q&A testing.

    • Solomon_Kano

Is it me or does Light’s face look different? Her features seem a bit… off.

      • Armane

        It’s just the lighting.

      • Anime10121

Yep as Armane said, probably just the lighting, as the other screens/trailers make her look the same (as she should).

    • KingRuff

Wait a min.. In FFXIII you can’t cast recovery spells on yourself?

      • SpecDotSign

You can. Just had to switch Paradigms. The game just didn’t let you choose whom you were healing. It would heal the person with the least HP first.

        • Rentekabond

Actually, the game did let you choose who to heal, as long as you didn’t pick autobattle (and even if you did, I believe).

          • NightzeroAX

A shame people didn’t know that.

          • SpecDotSign

I think you should check again. In FFXIII there was no way to choose whom in your party you wanted to target. That probably changed in XIII-2, but I wasn’t dumb enough to fall for that trap.

          • Alex K. I. Nielsen

I uh, just picked who I wanted to heal. While playing FF13.

          • Altumn

Yea I actually Platinumed both, and I would have died before doing all that withought choosing who to heal haha. You can do it in both.

          • Uhhh yeah there was a way to choose whom your party would target. o___o up and down directional buttons buddy.

    • ShadowDivz

How come she’s wearing different clothes in the screen shot? Can we customize her appeareance?

      • Yep. She has different customizable costumes in the game. Costumes are linked to different abilities.

        • ShadowDivz

Ahh. Like the titles in Tales of Graces?
That’s cool, for some reason i love when a game has alternate costumes.

The second one is my favorite.

  • neospite

am i wrong or does Lightning have a monster fighting with her like in FFXIII-2?

  • Trey Donnelly

That image of Light sliding down the dune looks awesome. Also, I like her outfit there. It seems very “desert like” for some reason xD

  • KingGunblader

    Let’s hope that Overclock doesn’t

    *puts on sunglasses*

  • Visa Vang

Her sadist costume still bugs the heck out of me though.

  • I had a feeling that Square would try to recreate the magic of the FFXIII E3 trailer. I was kind of disappointed that Lightning couldn’t slow down time as shown in the trailer, but Lightning Returns seems to have a spiritual successor to that ability so I’m ready!
