By Sato . March 19, 2013 . 8:09pm

Final Fantasy V is headed to smartphones in Japan later this month, according to a report at FF-Reunion.

Squaresoft’s 1992 Super Nintendo hit will getting a 2D visual upgrade in its upcoming Smartphone port. The main feature of the smartphone version is the new touch screen controls.

Previously, Final Fantasy V has been ported on PSOne as part of the Final Fantasy Anthology compilation and also on Game Boy Advance. The GBA release is what the smartphone version will be based on.

Final Fantasy V will be released on March 28th for Android and iOS devices for 1,800 yen.

It won’t be too long now for a FFXIII port on smartphones. xD

  • leadintea

    I am LOVING the portraits!!

    • Detrimont

      That Amano art

  • Mugen

thought they were moving away from mobile platforms?

    • dmysta3000

The said they are moving away from social games, mobile ports are still okay.

      • Mugen

    • They meant Social Games, nothing was said about stopping production for the Mobile market!

  • fyi1191

    Awaiting FF6. *Kefka’s laugh*

  • Hm, Lena has apparently lost all the blood in her body making her pale and sickly looking.
    Love Amano nonetheless. And yay!!

  • Ace

  • Embryon

Love the dialogue portrait, but the character sprites look… weird. I like the super-pixelated ones better. :<

  • AuraGuyChris

The Adventures of Hobo-On-A-Chocobo shall rise again.

    • puchinri

Pfft. More like adventures of the badass pirate capt., the amazing princess and /spoiler spoiler spoiler. Plus Butz.

      • neocatzon

        no love for gramps?

        • puchinri

We do love gramps a lot over here, but that gets a bit sad to acknowledge. (I was trying to half include him in the spoiler though, since it’s connected~?)

  • Heropon

FFV with Updrade graphic on Smartphone . My disappointment with SE is increasingly

    • Increasingly what? Tell me! Tell us!! The suspense is killing us all!!!

    • maroon1

Not everyone have or want to buy 3ds or vita. I really hope those handled console die,

I want to see more high quality games on smartphone. Good job square enix

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

Disappointing. Playing turn-based RPGs (at least the SE ones) on touch-screen is really boring. You have to keep pointing on everything. With buttons you can make all selections in two seconds.

    • Isn’t doing so actually more boring than precise touching? I mean, if I were to talk about my experience with FFVIII’s whole “Drawing for Magic” system, well, this would already become an off-topic chain for replies.

      • Guest

No, I prefer having speed commands. Touching everything makes the turns longer and I grow tired of touching for so much time.

        • Randy Marsh

I know touching the screen with your finger can be so hard, if only someone would make a “pen-like object” that makes touching the screen so much easier. But sadly those things only exist in the wild realms of our imaginations.

          • There’s that 3DS thing that uses this thing called a “stylus” whatever that is.

          • Pockystix

y’know what was the greatest thing about the 3DS and DS touch screen

            you didn’t need to use them = w =

    • Bakuryukun

the logic here isn’t sound, there is actually a little bit LESS “button pushing” that you have to do with a touch screen.than with buttons in the case of this kind of battle system.

      • Eliézer Dos Santos

Nobody is talking that pushing buttons is bad. It’s about pointing and touching and everything, and this makes the turns longer and you may get tired of pointing your finger in diferent positions on the screens for so much time.

With buttons you can choose everything quickly.

        • Bakuryukun

I really don’t see how it’s possible that it takes more time. In my experience playing FFIII on the DS I find it takes less time and is less cumbersome. At the very least this means that user experience with touch controls varies from user to user.

  • HerosLight

I’m slightly OK if its only upgraded visuals/sprites on smartphones.

But if it comes down to a 3D remake, it better not be on smartphones only.

    • Why not? Smartphones nowadays are more than capable or running 3D games anyways. Unless you meant “Smartphone only”.

      • HerosLight

Yeah, I meant “It better not be Smartphones only” if they ever make a 3D remake of it.

        I edited it just incase.

      • I rather buttons.

  • Raoni Marques

As long as they release it on other plataforms, I’m fine with it. Graphics are looking good!

  • Randy Marsh

    Oh my god yes!

  • Wait what

I never understood why the official artwork for these old FF games were so completely different from the in-game sprites. I’m not sure what it is the artists had against colorful hair or unique designs, but I’m glad the series got rid of this trend as the graphics evolved. It still annoys me that Terra is blonde in Dissidia, though.

    • Pedro Cavalcante

let me guess, you only watch anime?

      • Wait what

Yes, that’s why I’m on a video game website. Talking about video games. Idiot.

    • Suicunesol

You mean Amano-senpai? It should be the other way around–why were the in-game sprites so completely different from the concept art? The answer is probably that the pixel artists used colors to make it easy to tell characters apart. If everyone was blond or a brunette, it would be hard to discern the sprites. Amano’s art, while good, apparently doesn’t transfer well to 16-bit video games? Yes, yes.

      • Wait what

It’s not just the in-game sprites, though. Those old games had portraits too, and the designs there reflected the characters’ sprite appearances. Yet Amano’s work was always completely different, even after the characters design evolved. Was he just stubborn and truly believed everyone should have pale skin and blonde hair?

    • Kefkiroth

Terra has an alternate costume with her having green hair and her usual outfit… but yeah, that should’ve been the main one.

    • Elvick

Concept art comes first you know.

      • Wait what

I’m aware of that. But it’s just that, CONCEPT art. With old games like these, the sprite is how the character eventually looks to those playing. So now in all these updated versions when they add the Amano art to the game, the portrait is completely clashing with the in-game sprites. Why didn’t they use the original portraits that had art reflecting how the character actually looked in-game? I get that everyone loves Amano’s art, but that’s just not how the characters wound up looking. Probably because if it was, they’d all look the same.

    • epy

If it were up to Amano, most female characters would be blonde. I’m with you, for me Faris will always have purple hair, Lenna pink hair and Terra green hair.

      • puchinri

Haha, that’s true. Agreed~. As much as I love his art, I’m glad the actual colors tend to stray a bit. I just always got the sense of it being (purely?) artistic on his side (color-wise, at least).

  • AnimusVox

I was wondering when V would start getting love.

  • Not sure if excite…
I mean it looks neater but… Im not into mobile and my expectations were on the 3ds :/

  • Oversoul

Slapping a vector mask over the original sprites does not make them look better, or even good, at all
    SE is so bad

  • JoJo_649

It could be awesome if they remade this game and VI in 3D for 3DS/Vita.

    • Elvick

      No. 2D.

VI shouldn’t be in 3D if they’re not going to put as much effort into it as they would a full new game.

      • JoJo_649

The FF III and IV remakes weren’t bad, besides if you want to play them in 2D, just play the originals or these IOS remakes, remaking them in 2D would be a waste of the Vita/3DS capabilities.

        • Elvick

They were horrible. Oh look, opinions swing both ways.

          PSP remakes > DS Remakes

By far. Good 2D is much easier to do than 3D. And they won’t put in the effort with 3D. *looks at DS games and how horrid they are* So don’t bother at all.

          • JoJo_649

Different opinions are the sauce of the world, however why don’t you enjoy these IOS remakes?, they have everything you want and look pretty good to boot, I’m more inclined towards them doing V and VI in 3d for the Vita/3DS, nothing wrong with you enjoying these and (hopefully) me and others the 3d ones.

  • Go2hell66

A remake would have been nice

  • Riseabovethesky

What happen to your hair Butz? It’s like the first time I saw you in Dissidia, I didn’t recognize you.

  • Brion Valkerion

I’ll wait 2 months for the PSP version of this version lol.

    • Shinra

Actually I won’t mind that, it would be rather nice to play it with actual buttons.

    • It’s too bad they didn’t finish porting all the main 2D FF titles to the PSP. Of course if they released any now they’d just be stuck in Japan like Type-0.

      • Maybe, maybe not. We did get FF3 last year.

  • Elvick

They have official become lazy. Well, they were lazy before, but now it’s just ridiculous.

edit; And if they do this to FFVI, I will legitimately cry.

    • Adol Christin

Well, I suggest you get lots of tissue right away.

  • ragnarok989

So by Android and iOS you mean March 28th for iOS and roughly…November for Android like every other Square-Enix game does.

  • ragnarok989

Ugh the source claims around Summer for Android…I hate when I’m right sometimes

  • epy

It is using those hideous sprites from that iOS Final Fantasy game so I don’t mind skipping this one. That portrait art looks fatastic though. I really hope this doesn’t mean we’re not getting a proper remake of Final Fantasy V for the 3DS or Vita, I’ve been waiting for that for a long time.

  • Crevox

    It begins

  • This is the part where I get to laugh like a maniac because I have an Xperia PSP phone, thus circumnavigating the woes of touch screen play.

  • puchinri

    I want a 3DS port/remake handled by Asano~.

FFV deserves more love and attention, in general, but also from SQE.

  • Rogerrmark

PSP port please. With physical release /haha like ever
    It would be cool,though.

  • Well, there goes the hopes of seeing one of my top 3 favorite Final Fantasy games get a 3DS upgrade like III & IV did on the DS (V is the one game out of the series I thought that 3D art style would actually look PERFECT for). Guess SE figures it’s way quicker and much less of a hassle to just slap these on iOS instead of actually remaking them now.

If this does turn out to be the sole remake of V (dear god I’d love to be wrong), that’ll be a huge shame. Would’ve loved to own uniform copies of the early games all nicely re-done. I’m going to be depressed as all hell when they inevitably “FF Dimension-ize” FFVI too…

On a positive note though, yay for pretty new portrait art!

  • gamerdude

Love Amano’s portraits but why not do a real 3d remake like 3 and 4?
3 in particular was pretty spectacular.

    • Time and money. Those games didn’t particularly reap all that much.

      • gamerdude

I would understand that if it was true. But the fact that it was out of print for months after it’s release until the anniversary edition made them produce new copies suggests otherwise.

  • Mithfalath

This is the precise reason why I got a smartphone earlier this month – Dimensions and now this. Only god knows what they’ll release in the damn platform in the coming months.

  • Skyer Ist

Can’t wait for 3D remakes of V and VI for 3DS!!!

  • 1800 yen isn’t that like 19$?

    That’s ridiculous.

  • kyubey777

I wonder, is there any chance it port to 3DS or PSP?

  • Pockystix

well, at least they bothered to change the sprites lol

    • Aaronrules380

Except the new ones look far worse than the old ones

  • Character sprites are horrible like Dimensions. Everything else looks good. I can already tell how much thought was put into this by looking at it.

  • Bakuryukun

Ooh, i like the graphics. My greatest hope is that FF6 will also gets this treatment and that both get to see a NA release, preferably on a console/handheld device, and that they come with the GBA versions scripts with the music quality of the SNES releases. Those I would buy in 10 seconds flat.

  • zephyrsword

Why not a normal hand-held? FFV is one of my favourite in the series and this feels like an honest kick in the pants just looking at it.

  • Why does the UI always looks like crap on these smartphone re-releases? It’s like they put zero effort into it. Just smack on some ovals and rounded rectangles with a ready-made smooth TTF for text.

They all just feel so… lazy. I guess that’s the point. Minimal effort for profit.

  • Jack Frazee

As long as it’s playable on Ouya, I’m sold. I can’t stand playing anything with this much depth on a smartphone.

  • Guest

    Vita port please.

  • Tien Ron

ooooooo i’m so getting this for my iPhone i love 5 Batrz is my Favorite ff character he was so bad ass in dissidia XD

  • So they went to the trouble of giving it a complete graphical overhaul, but aren’t even going to release it on an actual game system? What’s the deal, SquEnix??

    • The engine they’re using for it was already developed for Final Fantasy Dimensions. It’s easier to use an already-made engine and tweak it to match an old game, than to make an entirely new engine for other platforms.

      • Well hey, Dimensions should’ve been released on a game system too.

  • Looks like since Auto-battle was a hit in the XIII games, they’ve made their way into the ports of older FF titles. LOL

  • David Hill

I think this game should be ported to PSP and based on the Smartphone version. Final Fantasy VI should also get the same treatment. Also, the soundtracks need to be remixed.

  • JustJam

How come they don’t remake them on DS anymore? I thought the FFIV DS remake was great. I was hoping that SE was gonna follow up on that. Perhaps it didn’t sell well in DS?
