New Shin Megami Tensei IV Video Delves Into Dungeons And Battles

By Spencer . March 19, 2013 . 1:47am

Shin Megami Tensei IV uses the press turn system from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, but instead of 3D models monsters are 2D art. Atlus animated the monsters and they kind of have the feel of Live2D art from adventure games.

The dungeons are in full 3D and players will be able to customize their character with different costumes. Nothing strikes fear in Mara’s heart… like a bunny hat?

Shin Megami Tensei IV is slated for release on May 23 for Nintendo 3DS.

    oh this looks soooooo goood

  • Mayjay

This video just made me realize how much I’m looking forward to the music in the game. 2:28 – 3:17 was like an aural orgasm.

  • Barrylocke89

That remix of the Fiend Battle theme from Nocturne was delicious. Also, it’s nice that the other main characters will be able to fight alongside you at some portions even if they aren’t going to be as customizable as you and your demon team.

fuck yeah , they should better bring Hitoshura out in this game too !!!

      • http://megatengaku.wordpress.com/ Guan van Zoggel

Including Hitoshura as downloadable demon for a (small) fee would be a great move for both Atlus and fans, I think.

  • ragingmerifes

2:34 That’s an interesting scene, because the protagonist is dead and the battle still kept going.

    • Hinataharem

Like in the first two games

  • Ninten

Reason to be a 3DS owner.

Plus I like that the game doesn’t end when the Hero dies. That’s really cool.

    • AkuLord3

Which doesn’t make sense…since you control them, once you’re dead they shouldn’t be around or listening to commands. Unlike P3/4 where your party members should revive u but don’t. Unless Demons can use monsters…idk feels weird but no big deal

      • Tom_Phoenix

Persona 3 has a very good reason why the MC’s death results in a game over. It’s just that the reason is revealed late in the game.

That said, I do agree with you that it is kind of strange that the fight goes on even without the MC in SMT IV. I guess the magic gauntlet is still operational even if the owner dies.

      • Zeik56

Demons aren’t Pokemon. Most of them have at least human level intelligence. It doesn’t really make any more sense that they would be completely incapable of fighting just because the hero dies. They’re also bound by contract to fight for you, so it’s not like they would just give up.

More than that though, I hope this means better gameplay balance. The consequence of having a gameover when the hero dies is usually that the hero is completely OP.

      • Ninten

Have you played SMT1&2? The game only ended if all human party members were dead.

Sure, person with the COMP is dead, but don’t you think the demons would cooperate with the other humans in the party, just because, I dunno, they are your allies?

  • Isaac Newton

I WANT the glowing tattoo a.k.a. nocturne style as a costume pretty pleassssseeeeee…

  • Istillduno

Fingers crossed Ghostlight or someone picks this up for Europe.

  • Hound

I’m seriously wondering how they plan to up the ante after the last game.

Fighting for the right to create the new world in the midst of the craziest demons SMT had to offer, And using a character that refused to use weapons or armor (punching things that were 3 times his size) was the most amazing RPG experience I’ve ever had. And then when the main character of Nocturne completely destroys your overpowered characters in Digital Devil Saga.. it made it so much better.

    • AkuLord3

Hitoshura didn’t “refuse” to use weapons and armor…just didn’t get any or need them since being a demon unlike the MC of SMTIV who is more like the old school MCs in the older SMT games who were humans

I remember reading somewhere that the fact that YHVH is such a A-hole is a symptom that something is wrong with the universe, we may find what it is in this game. Or maybe we will discover something about the Mothers that will change how we see the Amala Universe

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

O.o My body is trembling here. I just want this game as soon as possible lol.^__^

  • Eric Harris

SMTIV looks like it’s going to have no problem being my favorite 3DS RPG and it will take a mammoth RPG to knock it off it’s throne.

I wonder…is that Amala Network, at the 3:24min mark?

    • imaguni

I went to check and it definitely seems to be. :D

    • http://www.facebook.com/ramon.navas.9 Ramón Navas

I doubt it, you can’t see the flow of amala as you could in the network

  • imaguni

I gotta keep saying this: I’m so excited for this game! Will we have another round of Fiend battles like in Nocturne? And I’m totally sold on the bunny ears accessory around 3:25.

  • Junko Enoshima

those are some sexy graphics for a 3ds game~

  • Eric Harris

The music is haunting and beautiful, the gameplay looks classic AND modern successfully merged, the art style brings feelings of nostalgia, and it’s SMT so.

  • gamerdude

Eu please we love smt over here but Atlus is ignoring the whole region :(
we love you atlus won’t you love us back?

  • benhofb

Dayumn, the Atlus news is just pouring out today, huh? I like it!

  • SetzerGabbiani

I can’t wait for this game! I think I saw the Amala network in there too…and for whatever reason that got me excited for SMT x FE all over again! Time for my daily viewing of that announcement trailer.

  • Prithivi

That’s it. I’ll start saving money for a 3DS from now on. Damn Atlus…

  • venomz09

the first person battle system killed these new atlus games for many people.

    such a shame.

just makes me view it as a cheap cell phone game or something, regardless if this is “old school”, it just makes zero sense to be implementing a first person battle system in a 2013 game.

sadly this seems to be a growing trend in quite a few jrpgs of late.

    blasphemy.

    • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

It works well in Stranger Journey, no complaints from me, Play some Unchained Blades or Etrian odyssey. Or Soul Hackers. Or Devil Survivor Overlocked. Or how about you stick a knife in it to rue the blasphemers who delight in partaking the aforementioned blasphemy. Unsanctimonious clouting .-. *shakes head*

      • Isaac Newton

you know stupid person are always stupid leave him be…

    • Suicunesol

Would it have made a difference to you if they did it like Pokemon and showed both your characters and the enemy characters (in 2D)?

  • Brandon001

i say this every time theres a post on this title – Lawd, i need this.
