Final Fantasy V Gets "Dimensions" Style Make Over For iOS And Android

By Spencer . March 20, 2013 . 5:03pm

Instead of giving Final Fantasy V a full 3D remake, Square Enix is porting the Game Boy Advance version to iOS and Android. Final Fantasy V Advance added new bosses like Enuo and four job classes: Necromancer, Cannoneer, Oracle, and Gladiator.

The smartphone re-release has all of the Advance content and modified graphics. Illustrations from Yoshitaka Amano replace the character portraits, which is a nice touch. However, the sprites which look kind of like Final Fantasy Dimensions look out of place to me. Perhaps, I’m too used to the original Super Famicom release. Here are some comparison screenshots.

I wonder which version of Siren will be in Final Fantasy V for iOS and Android…

Final Fantasy V will be available for iOS at the end of March. The Android version is slated for summer.

I wonder how this will compare to the GBA version… that I never finished
Woah how did I miss that… anyways… yeah, looking forward to see how Siren looks

  • HerosLight

Will the music be remade too? Because FF5′s battle theme is one of my favorite battle themes ever.

  • http://twitter.com/Klarktastic Klark / Bengalinha

This new style looks weird in my opinion, the characters look too tall.

    • Pockystix

they’re taller, yet the areas seem smaller. . . I’m not sure if why they did that, honestly

      • Scrooge_McDuck

The area looks smaller in the new versions because the original screenshots are stretched.

  • Neophoton

I actually wouldn’t mind giving this a spin down the line. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve played FFV.

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

I like the Amano art. I don’t like how they couldn’t bother to resize it for the dialogue boxes. The character sprites are bad and clash with the enemy sprites too much and gives that RPG maker style IMO.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Not completely, Mag. The RPG Maker feel isn’t in this version of the game, unlike Dimensions. The Character Sprites and enviroment are better made. Although, regarding the character portraits, I will give you that. Now, how will Gilgamesh translate in updated Amano art.

      • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

        I’m waiting for that actually.

  • Aaronrules380

I really hate the dimensions art style. It feels way to plastic and generic and lacks the charm of the original sprites

    • Seizui

…You managed put that in words that I wanted to say, but could not figure out how to accurately describe why Dimension’s style bothered me. Awesome! —Well, to be fair, it looks /GREAT/ for the monsters. Just not for the player characters.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Look at the bright side! It isn’t the KH Chibi-style. You either pick your poison, or skip this entirely. And I like Dimensions’ art form. But, of course, to each their own.

      • $36598391

I don’t mind the FF1,2 and 4 PSP artform but only touch screen controls?
        No thankyou

      • http://ahmadmdev.yolasite.com/ AhmadMDev

yeah ,Grateful for that at least

  • Flandre Scarlet

Oh lord Bartz, what did they do to you?!

  • Ethan_Twain

As someone who hasn’t ever touched Final Fantasy V before, I kinda like the new sprites in these comparison screens. It’s clear that the developer has gone to a fair bit of effort to recreate the character designs, just without visible pixels and making the proportions slightly more human like. I’ve gotta wonder about touch controls though…

I suppose the best case scenario for me would to have this port show up on the 3DS eShop. That way I can enjoy the improved graphics but without paying a retail premium like FF III and IV for DS. And I would have buttons.

Is there any chance of that best case scenario coming through for me?

    • Pockystix

well, they didn’t bother with FFD. . . and we still haven’t heard anything about Bravely Default. . . But I’m sure Square will get right to Localizing the sequel to All the Bravest!

    • puchinri

As someone who has yet to finish the game, but since starting it (somewhat recently) it has become my favorite title, this doesn’t look bad but it is not what I would prefer.

If (and it had better!) it does get ported to the 3DS, I want a 3/4 style remake (preferably, also handled by Asano and his team). Unless they want to get stylistic and go 4HoL/BD on it, which is still fine.

  • CirnoTheStrongest

Shoulda went with the PSX style and GBA changes in my opinion. That portrait art is horrendous…

    • Detrimont

the portrait art is brilliant, they just should have resized them or the text boxes

    • Pockystix

      amano’s style is unique

It’s ugly, but in a way I kind of like. . . but in moderation. Having it be the portraits takes it a bit too far, and just makes it even more jarring how different it looks to the actual characters lol

*edit* so we have character sprites that look way different in style to the monster art, and portraits that in noway resemble the sprites lol

  • Randy Marsh

Am I the only one who is digging these designs?

    • Pockystix

      probably

  • Sylveria

Oh look.. Square making an iphone port. Is it Wednesday already?

Why are the icons gigantic compared to the text boxes? Yeesh. The rest of the visual redo I kinda like. Too bad they’re dumping it on phones instead of anything else. And it really begs the question of Farris convinced anyone she was a guy when you see the original design.. of course in the Amano-verse, every guy looks like a woman, so I guess it fits.

      http://www.siliconera.com/open-thread/

  • Pockystix

yeahhh, this really isn’t all that better looking

honestly, they prolly should’ve kept the real remake for one of the better handhelds

*edit* hold on, I just remembered that this is $20. . . yeah, kinda steep for a weird graphical overhaul, but not an upgrade o ,o

  • fds_nextdart

I’ll have to agree with Spencer, the new models look to sharp vs the game’s graphics (which I presume are the GBA graphics without any kind of extra touch). Not that I’m saying the new models are bad, just that if you are going to sort of remake the models, may as well retouch the entire backgrounds so that they won’t stand out. Thumbs up for the new portraits; those look good no matter what~.

  • juma086

a lot of you seem disappointed. i expected a direct port from the gba version, no graphical update or beautiful amano art portraits. my PS1 version of ff5 was REALLY glitchy and i never got to really enjoy it, so i welcome this IOS port with open arms.

    • Aaronrules380

I might care about the graphical updates if they actually made the game look better, instead of a bit worse (IMO)

  • AuraGuyChris

Faris looks awesome in the portrait.
…Except, why the heck are all of them too big? We don’t really want to see that much.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Maybe it can be adjusted in-game?

  • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

I think they did a great job with the sprites! I mean, Faris and Lenna seem to have grown 3 sizes in the Bust area. Don’t know if anyone else noticed.

    • Pockystix

      *spoilers*

why would they do that? You shouldn’t notice her bust til after her reveal! lol

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Pah, Bartz and Galuf only see what they want to see. If you know what I mean… cheese biscuits and mashed potatoes, indeed.

  • epy

So I guess when they port FFVI to iOS they’ll also use the awful Dimension sprites. It’s nice to know that the old version (any of them) I own will be superior than the new shiny HD thing by default for a change. That and buttons.

    • Misty Dawson

      D-don’t say that.. no!

  • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

You guys. If anything, this is LOADS better than KH Chibi style! But to each their own.

    • Pockystix

I swear, they had to have tried to make that look bad lol

but honestly, this isn’t exactly high-art either. Still waiting for a fully celshaded remake on the 3DS. . . what; a man can dream, right?

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

You and I both know they will do yet another port/remake of this game for the 3DS/Vita, before they even release go beyond the Beta phase of development for Versus XIII.

  • alixraen

I realize Amano’s art is regarded as the ultimate when taking into consideration the first six games, but it really, really looks out of place here, spilling out of the text boxes, and making it even more clear that it doesn’t match the sprites, which also look a little wonky.

    Everyone loves white-haired Bartz, right?

  • Suriel Cruz

I like it! Looks sharp & smooth.

  • biskmater

Ah, Amano’s artwork is one of those things I never could appreciate in final fantasy games, it is perhaps a good thing, that it never really shows up in most games.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

It shows up in E-V-E-R-Y FF game. Peel your eyes! *point to each FF official game logo*

      • biskmater

I meant within the games, I can stomach a few covers well enough. But I must say I did not see it in 7 at all.

        • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Well, he did a lot of concept art for VII along with Nomura. You should see his porfolio! It is quite packed. Also, I’m sure this site has a very old article regarding Amano’s workaholic habits. Heck, he started working with Tatsunoko at a very young age!

      • alixraen

There’s a reason that’s all he does for the series anymore.

        • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

And what reason is that? Tell me!

      • Testsubject909

Gotta be a bit more specific actually.

Games like, say, Final Fantasy Adventure which wasn’t really a Final Fantasy game but was renamed as such in it’s NA release doesn’t have that artwork.

        • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Exactly. That game doesn’t count, because it isn’t a Final Fantasy game. All Game Boy FF games don’t count.

  • scratchbach

Love the new portraits, don’t love the way the sprites look. Still, V is my favorite FF so I’m still excited for this.

  • alixraen

I really do find it a bit odd that they’d stick with the touched-up and recolored Amano art when there is concept art that more closely matches the sprite costumes.

    • ShinGundam

      I guess Amano wasn’t a character designer in FF5.

      • alixraen

        He was, though.

        • ShinGundam

How? Lenna has white/blonde hair on Yoshitaka Amano’s artworks, but her sprite art and concept art depicts her with pink hair.

          • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

All Concept art was always done by Amano before Tesuya Nomura and Co. came along. In-game sprites always had some variations from his work, but that’s due to the decisions of the Spriters, among others.

    • puchinri

Oh my goodness, I love that concept art. 0n0
I don’t know how I’d never seen that before. Was that Nomura?
Whoever it was, they should design a new FF with the older titles’ style so we get more of this (and to see it come to life in-game).

  • Happy Gamer

I hope they do a extra better job for 6. I think in many people’s heart’s it’s their favorite title (especially us older folks).
It would be so nice to see a overhauled 2d sprite style (not dimensions).a 3d version would be really pushing it, and SE doesn’t seem to really like VI as much as IV lol. i honestly don’t mind the dimensions style art but SE can do better.

  • Nyandroid

I actually love the portraits! I don’t even mind that they haven’t been resized, it’s kind of like speech balloons. But the sprites, they just look really awkward to me.

  • ShinGundam

The contrast between artwork Bartz and sprite Bartz has never been clearer.

    • alixraen

Yep. At least the GBA portrait seemed to incorporate elements of both.

  • http://twitter.com/VXLbeast VXLbeast

Horrific. Looks like it was made in RPG maker.

  • Zero_Destiny

Hhhmmm at first I was pretty psyched when I saw that screenshot with Lenna’s portrait yesterday but now after seeing some more screens I’m not really sure. I like the art, and the new clear text-boxes generally look pretty nice. But the portraits not fitting the text-boxes is a bit odd looking now that I’ve seen some more screenshots.

So yeah just thinking about these mugshots and I’m hoping that ether they A.) can be re-sized or at the very least B.) when the text-box is on the bottom of the screen it will place the portrait at the bottom left corner and instead of the bottom of the portrait hanging out we will have the top part of the portrait above the box. Honestly aesthetically speaking I think we all see a portrait’s bottom sticking out of the text-box and think “cheap” or “not sized properly” but when the top part of the portrait (usually the character’s head and such) sticks above the text-box we don’t mind.

Anyways though, I like the mugshots but yeah as they are now, it’s kinda unnerving a bit. Honestly I don’t hate the sprites but I don’t love them ether; nothing too amazing but they get the job done. Really was never a fan of the original FFIV and FFV’s sprites in general ether. lol It’s nice to see a souped up version of FFV for phones now but I’m still hoping for an eventual 3D remake for FFV and FFVI just like FFIII and FFIV got. As for the controls I enjoyed Final Fantasy Dimensions a lot and thought it was one of the better touch controlled RPGs out there (still had minor problems, getting through doors sometimes is a pain like in most of these touch games lol) on iOS so as long as they just reuse the same scheme it should be fine. Overall I’m mildy excited to try this, hopefully it won’t have an high price tag though, I caved in and bought Dimensions only because it was on sale. ^^’ lol

  • komiko12

At least Faris’ portrait captured her androgynous appearance very well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JDS1087 Justin Smith

I honestly don’t see why everyone’s upset about this form of sprites. They worked just fine for the Final Fantasy IV Collection.

    • epy

Big difference if you ask me.

  • Göran Isacson

Welp, can’t say I’m too crazy about the amano-style art. I dunno, I… think I just like their sprites more? Original sprites were so expressive and fun to see, far more fun than the Amano-art makes them out to be. Eh, I guess it’s a matter of taste. Amano makes good still images, but I just equate FFV with the animated antics of their protagonists too much to dig these new dialog boxes.

  • Misty Dawson

I uh.. funny enough.. hate that Faris looks like a girl. It throws off the beginning part of the game with that sprite.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Heh, that also applies for the Avatar you’re using.

  • Dexward

SE should have at least done it similar to FF1 and 2 Anniversary and FF4 Complete Collection.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

    Why not Final Fantasy VI?

Seriously, FFV is absolutely not a bad game, and the battle system is pretty fun, but come on, Square. If you’re going to re-remake another 2D Final Fantasy, why not go straight to one of your best works yet? FFVI is a masterpiece from the SNES era and, unlike VII (which everyone and their dogs want to see remade as well), it can easily get a visual lift without deviating too far from the original game.

I’d also like to add these retro-minded RPGs of late have taken too much inspiration from the first generation Final Fantasy games. Despite the airships, chocobos and moogles, it was pretty standard medieval fantasy fare. There’s no reason to keep recycling the boring “four heroes of light” plot just for the sake of nostalgia. If they try making a Final Fantasy Dimensions II, I’d like to see some kind of hybrid fantasy setting like the ones seen in VI, VII, VIII and X and a more interesting story to back it up.

I suppose Bravely Default is a step in that direction, bringing old and new elements together to make something that can stand on its own legs. More of that please.

    • Crevox

They’re taking their time chronologically. FFIV got remade a million times, along with FFIII. Now it’s FFV time.

      Gotta milk it.

      • $36598391

FF III only got 1 remake for the NDS and ports of it to ios and psp

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Because they want to do it in order. FFVI has to wait it’s turn, just like every other game. But if we talk about skipped entries being remade, I guess they consider FFX and X-2 better than VI at the moment?

  • ShinGundam

Is it me or pictures are for gba version with some filters?

  • Renaldi Saputra

is this just my feeling or what.. idk
but I saw it resembles to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon in GBA.. that TM/HM icon

  • Adam I.

Dimension spirtes are weird but the Amano art is nice. I prefer this to the 3D chibi graphics the DS remakes got, at the very least.

  • gamerdude

For some reason even on the GBA I thought “these battle background visuals don’t feel like Final Fantasy” and the same is true here. I dunno somehow that just looks like a kid drew outside in Switzerland to me.

  • $36598391

    Ugh…. why ios and android?!
They better release this on 3DS and Vita…

  • puchinri

Faris’s hair and skintone are too light in that version for me. (Especially for a pirate, yar!)

It looks pretty, but I’d rather see it look like the older version, or get the 3/4 treatment and make it to 3DS. Well, I want the latter no matter what, but yeah. (Or even 4HoL/BD style. . .)

You know you wanna do this, Asano! >u< ♥

  • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

Is it me or does Faris have Sarah from Dimensions’ hairstyle? Bartz’s freelancer sprite does resemble a pallete swap of Sol’s too but with his Dissidia hairstyle. Faris needs more pants in her job art or at least for the Wind Crystal jobs. The sprites are too feminine even though you learn her gender in the next dungeon. The US release also needs to get ride of that hideous basic font.

  • http://twitter.com/DarrylThinks The Letter D

It actually looks pretty good and IDK what people say, I love Amano’s art style, especially for the portraits.

  • Valtiel Ikari

Faris looks too girlish, takes away the shock of her revelation latter in the game, at least before she could fool people, know she just looks outright girly, Faris is not girly, she is a manly-women dammit!

  • alucard22m

evereything is just perfect but those HORRIBLE dimension’s like character’s sprites :(

  • Rollersnake

No PSP version this time? Aw man.

  • http://twitter.com/sakura_candy Lumi

I hope they are faster in bringing the game to Android this time, got Dimensions while it’s on 50% off and it’s certainly feeling a LOT like the old games (which isn’t a bad thing). Except the mediocre sprite art.

  • maroon1

I’m really surprised that people prefer the original graphics over that new one ? Are people here blind or something ?
