New Atelier Game Has Two Protagonists, Uses Dynasty Warriors Engine [Update]

By Spencer . March 25, 2013 . 11:59pm

Update: Now that more information is available, we’ve updated our report. The game is titled Atelier Escha and Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky. You can read more about the game here.

ateler Dengeki PlayStation revealed the next entry in the Atelier series, Atelier Escha & Logy: The Alchemists of the Sky and Dusk. There are two Alchemists in the title because this Atelier game has two playable characters and two side of the story to see. You get to select who the protagonist is.

Another interesting surprise is Atelier Escha & Logy uses the Warriors series LTGL engine. Gust was acquired by Tecmo Koei and while we’ve seen Gust staff work with Omega Force, this is the first tech sharing between the two companies. Battles can support up to six characters now with switchable party members in the front and rear row.

This part isn’t clear, but buyers at launch might get Mana Khemia 2 as a bonus. Mana Khemia 2 is a PlayStation 2 game that has not been released for Game Archives or PS2 Classics.

Atelier Escha & Logy: The Alchemists of the Sky and Dusk is in development for PlayStation 3 and slated for release on June 27.

Oh. Ohhhh. At first I thought we were getting an Atelier Warriors game.

… Dammit, now I want an Atelier Warriors game.

    • Draparde

Lmao, i did too for a second.

i wouldn’t be surprised at all to see an Atelier character or two appear in the next Warriors orochi game XD

      • Luna Kazemaru

implying there will be another orochi game? They honestly didn’t even support 3 enough to make me think they care

    • raymk

Believe me they’ll get to it, no reason not to do a spin off warriors game using all of gust series characters. It’d be the perfect game for a cross-over with Ar tonelico, Atelier, and Mana Khemia characters.

      • Mir Teiwaz

I have a hard time imagining reyvateils in a Warriors style game…but seeing Lyner, Croix, and Aoto fighting in that style would be pretty awesome.

    • (Lu Bu allying up with Totori)
      All of my money.

      • Follower_of_Pram

“Um…hi, that’s quite the bodyguard ya have there little missy.”

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha I am so with you there, I saw before my minds eye a system for cooking up items and weapons and what not on the spot and then using them to slay thousands of enemies at once, while the cheesiest rock imaginable plays. Silly, yes. But also very, very tempting.

      • Follower_of_Pram

        Atelier musou attacks go!

    • Riseabovethesky

They will probably be the clumsiest warriors you ever seen!

  • CrystalPulse

I wonder how this will pan out…

  • Andar

“This part isn’t clear, but buyers at launch might get Mana Khemia 2 as a bonus.”

I fully support any kind of throwback to the Mana Khemia games in hopes that it gets a bit more recognition. The first Mana Khemia in particular is easily my favorite Atelier game in the entire series.

    • Mike Pureka

First Mana Khemia was super awesome, the 2nd one was…not. =/

  • Lazulis

M-m-mana Khemia 2?! I’d jump on that deal so fast. I loved the first one so much. Two sides? Reminds me of Hexyz Force, especially, the dusk and sky bit. Looking forward to that!

    • Ladius

Mana Khemia 2 had two scenarios, they’re obviously making a connection between the two games.

      • Mike Pureka

Mana Khemia 2 was ALSO not very good – truthfully, it felt as if the splitting of the story in half resulted in two unsatisfying stories. Also, Mana Khemia 2’s battle system was a huge step down from the previous game due to the smaller party size and altered assist system. Oh, and Ulrika is super not likable.

Ugh. Never did finish that game. Felt like a chore. Hope this new Atelier title turns out better, but trying to create a connection with a game like MK2 does not inspire me at all.

        • FitzpatrickPhillips

Haha, hell no. MK2 was a step-up in pretty much every way. The battle system wasn’t a huge step down at all as you have a few more things to work with, a grow book that made more sense and in true end the party sides increases. Besides, because the game had a well implemented hard mode, you needed to take advantage of everything to win, unlike in 1.

And the characters, especially Ulrika’s group, were amazing.

        • solbalmung

The splitting of the story in half resulted in two unsatisfying stories?

If you play through both of the routes (Ulrika/Raze) through the same save you’ll get a final scenario where both of them are joined thus leading to a satisfying end.
I for one felt the 2nd Mana Khemia was vastly superior on every aspect from the first one. The battle system got a bit tweaked, the alchemy level progression got overhauled, the cast of characters was utterly awesome, I never laughed so much and also cared for the weird quirky characters. Let’s not talk about the graphics as they were within GUST standard.
So yea, I really don’t think that the story was unsatisfiying at all but of course if you only played one side of the story while there is two then don’t except too much of a conclusion.

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

    >Atelier Warriors
    Take my soul, I guess.

  • raymk

I like what I hear so far especially the 6 characters in battle and 2 playable sides to play through.

  • SpecDotSign

6 Characters?! Suikoden style? My body is ready!

  • Luna Kazemaru

    > male MC

    hmmm not sure

    • Raze

I kinda miss atelier male mc…
WHERE ARE YOU…Oi Klein, Felt , Edge???

      • Sebastian Lothian

Yeah, they were great protagonists in my opinion. I’m not sure why there are so many comments about it.

        • Raze

          Of course they are….
Its kinda sad that all of them is forgotten….
          Especially Edge..Poor him…

    • Ladius

I don’t think that’s an issue, considering you can decide which scenario to play in order to focus on the heroheroine you are interested in.

      • MrTyrant

If it is like Mana Khemia 2, you would need to finish both scenarios from each main character so they can finally join as a team in the third part of the game. In fact Atelier Iris 2 did have somethig similar.

    • ShadowScipio that a male mc? I guess I’m confused because the other character in the picture appears to be wear a frilly pink/peach blouse-y thing with yellow turtleneck and lavender something-with-buttons. It screams short haired girl to me but then again this series has a cutesy style to it.

      • Cazar

        Yeah that’s not a male.

        • ShadowScipio

I guess now I’m just confused about where everyone is getting the male mc thing from, since the article doesn’t say. Eska and Rosy both sound like girl’s names to me, but I guess one male and one female mc makes sense.

          • Guest

I don’t know either. I think someone just saw short hair/flat chest and assumed male.

      • Arrei

Male protagonist’s a detail in the actual reveal, but the picture is just two girls from Atelier Ayesha. Ayesha and her sister Nia, as it were.

        • ShadowScipio

Gotcha. Been a while since I looked at any Ayesha stuff, so I didn’t recognize her. I’m still on Totori, so I’m a ways off from playing Ayesha.

          • Steven Reece

Yeah it was a throw back to Marie & Ella in one of the CGs of Ayesha.

    • MrTyrant

Some female main characters in most Atelier are very stupid or boring as any boring male character from any other game. The game might no be missing nothing with this, instead improving a little since it offering two different perspectives gender wise although it isn’t new for the company.

  • Sentsuizan_93

An Atelier game using the Dynasty Warriors engine? And Mana Khemia 2 as a bonus!? This has piqued my interest quite a bit…

  • dahuuuundge

I’ll be damned if they give the in-game model the Dynasty Warrior’s faces

  • CirnoLakes

I like the Dynasty engine thing.

Not so much the return of the male protagonist.

I liked the Atelier franchise being a bastion of female protagonism in a sea of male protagonists.

    • Ladius

Having two separate scenarios means you will be able to decide which one to use, just as in Mana Khemia 2. They aren’t removing the female main characters as they did in the Iris series and in MK1.

      • Yeah, but if you want to see the whole story, you’ll eventually have to play as the guy. I personally would have rather liked two female leads to chose from. :)

        • Jisgsaw

Hum, from what I see in the image, it’s two girls (even if one for once doesn’t have 95C breasts)…

          • topostarlight

Those girls are Nio and Ayesha from the previous game, Atelier Ayesha.

          • ShadowDivz

Look what happens when a girl doesn’t have 95C breasts in a game. People can’t tell.

  • Talearc

So… the battle system will become Combination of Mana Khemia and Suikoden, when members in front can switch with members in rear. Interesting.

Looks like this Atelier will be focused more on RPG rather than alchemy

    • puchinri

Even though I remember Annie having three characters in battle as well, I think it used the grid system too, and it worked quite effectively (and was a lot of fun). I kind of hope they merge the Ayesha and grid battle system a bit, actually.

  • Ladius

This could be the meatiest Atelier game on PS3 so far. I loved Ayesha and its setting, and it’s really awesome to see it mixed with the dual scenarios and battle system from Mana Khemia 2. I’m eager to know which heroes will return from Ayesha, I hope Keithgriff and Linca are even more relevant than in the first game.

    • Steven Reece

      Keithgriff was badass.

  • This is definitely something to look forward to. I like how Gust is looking to expand on this great franchise.

  • akiko_sakuraba

  • Rogerrmark

    SIX characters?Totally hyped!
We’ll probably see huge improvements and enormous changes on this game,a la Rorona>Totori transition.

  • fyi1191

Sterk is going to roflstomp everyone in a DW-like game.

  • Not fond of the two scenarios thing. I like my stories to be one long consistent string of events, but whatever :/
I do dig the inclusion of a male MC though(as long as he’s not some girly whimp). Anyway, I definitely like the sound of the new battle system, it was about time they fleshed out that part~

  • Mint

I wonder what it must be like for a guy to have the nickname Rosy.

    • AAa

Well Raze from Mana khemia 2…his japanese name is Rozeluxe… know..

    • WyattEpp

      “Camille is a man’s name! And I’m a man!”

  • AAa

About the male MC part….i dont know if its because of the Male main character or because of the story. but let see here..if we combine IGN scores from atelier iris to Mana Khemia: it averages at 7.04. While Atelier arland series to ayesha they average at only 6.18. So even if this new game get a perfect 10, it still has lower average score than the atelier iris series to mana khemia. IIRC, atelier arland to ayesha has that time limit system in story mode right? And not to mention..their story..i dont know it doesnt really involve antagonist like Atelier iris to Mana khemia series..someone fill me in for this..i generally like the Atelier iris to mana khemia series better it gives this adventurous feeling unlike the current series..

    • I wouldn’t suggest using review scores – of any kind – as evidence to back up any claims. I find scores unnecessary, in this instance, since there have been various reviewers over the years on IGN so it makes taking the average of scores to be moot. Also, scores =/= quality. A written review that points out the pros and cons to be more satisfying – a system used here on Siliconera and Crunchyroll.

The time limits aren’t great but it requires the player to manage their time between the various gameplay aspects of the title, that provides a different type of difficulty to those games.

While the games (in the Arland series, at keast – I don’t own Ayesha) doesn’t have an actual antagonist, it makes a good change to the usual things we see in RPGs – it’s about the adventure (or journey)!.

    • Flandre Scarlet

Just to inform you, Iris and Mana Khemia were the exception to the Atelier rule. There are several, SEVERAL Atelier games previous to Iris that all used the same formula of a female protagonist doing alchemy to achieve a certain goal. The Arland games was actually Gust going back to their roots. Whether that was because of negative reaction to Iris/MK or not, I can’t say.

The Iris series and MK were basically made to appeal to Western gamers since nobody thought the previous Atelier games would make it in the west. The Arland games proved them wrong in that regard.

And really, don’t use review scores as an indicator of quality or fanbase. The Atelier games thrived because they WEREN’T regular JRPGs with some kind of epic plot and a main antagonist.

    • puchinri

I wouldn’t base it off of one’s sites scores (and especially not one like IGN). You also have to consider which has been the longest standing tradition and what has made more sales. The series started out with female protags and had them for quite some time before introducing a male one.

  • Elemiel

Two MCs? Different battle system? Color me interested. :D

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    O-Oh mah godd..ohh mahh gawwddd

  • Tooru

Odd that there’s a male protagonist. I probably won’t end up playing as him.
Even more odd that they’re using the Dynasty Warriors engine; will it end up making a noticeable difference in how the game looks and runs? In any case, I suppose we’ll have to wait and find out.
Let’s hope this one actually makes it to the west after Tecmo-Koei’s incompetent handling of the series so far.

    • ShadowDivz

*Let’s hope this one actually makes it to the west after Tecmo-Koei’s fantastic handling of the series so far.

      • Matenshi

I’d love to hear how doing nothing but removing a feature that every single Atelier game has had in the past is fantastic handling. NISA still did the localization.

The partial English dub was understandable when we also got the Japanese audio, but this is poor form. Dual audio and/or a full English dub please.

        • ShadowDivz

I was just doing some whimsical trolling. Sorry.
God knows, why T.K even took over atelier if they are going to treat it this way.

      • Tooru

Yes, Tecmo-Koei’s handling has been fantastic. I love how they not only barely marketed Ayesha, but released it close to Neptunia V in order to have it buried. I love how they didn’t even put out a limited edition of the game. I love how they released Totori Plus without even a single announcement or even a press release that it was coming. I love how their American division never speaks to their fans, because there seems to be hardly anyone working there.

If you think this is great handling, you need a reality check. NISA always handled the series better; they actually would give updates about the games in their weekly e-mails from time to time. Do you know how we found out Tecmo-Koei was bringing Ayesha here? Through Amazon. It took Tecmo-Koei WEEKS to even announce it after we found out it was releasing here. Tecmo-Koei hardly cares about Atelier, and they couldn’t care less about the franchises fans.

        • ShadowDivz

Dude i was just messing with you relax.
Honestly, i don’t even know why Tecmo-Koei took over the atelier series if they are going to treat it this way. I’ve actually been trying to wrap my head around it for quite some time.

  • angelx03

Why are peeps assuming it’s going to a male and female protagonist? There’s a chance that it could be 2 female protagonists to choose from.

    • Luna Kazemaru
      • Raze

        Vayne…Is that you??

        • Luna Kazemaru

          generic looking MC go.:P

          • Raze

            So…Is he Eska?Or Rosy?
Both of the name sounds like for girls though….

          • Juuu

Official romanization on the scan says he’s “Logy” and she’s “Escha.” Which are still strange names but it’s a little less strange to our ears than a dude named Rosy. :P

          • He’s Logy. Silliconera did a weird romanization despite there being a clearly English romanization right there in the scan.

          • Sato

Spencer posted it before the scans were out. His name is not “Logy” either, it is Logix. Update coming soon.

          • If Logy is accurate, it’s most likely a nickname like every Atelier main character.

          • Sato

Yep! Updated post is up :)

  • Wtv

If they don’t make him a stupid harem-lead, that’s okay. That was my biggest problem with Atelier Iris. They needed to show how every girl was in love with the generic MC, even though he had already a main romantic interesst.

    • puchinri

Yeahhh, that’s always bland to me (even in the reverse harem scenario, which I am always happy to indulge).

I wouldn’t mind if they treated both protags like they did Ayesha though (which is essentially, “you’re cute!”/shiptease, but rightfully so).

    • MrTyrant

That’s why I loved Mana Khemia more and the latest Atelier games (Arland trilogy/Ayesha) had different ending for each character, i sometimes feel that they were kind of like an Otome game with a reverse harem. Pretty good actually haha.

  • This weekend is dedicated to completing Totori and Meruru (at least one playthrough each)! I still need pick up Ayesha, too.

  • Flandre Scarlet

This could either be what Atelier needs to get a bigger audience in the West or the absolute death of the series overseas depending on how Gust handles it.

    • puchinri

It will be interesting if we can get an idea of the popularity and/or sales after the release. Ayesha has still received a fair bit of support, which I’m glad for (because the game didn’t do anything wrong in that case, TK did). I wonder how it’ll fair in Japan as well (and which protag will be more popular with which audiences).

  • I think “Rosy” is a man… haha, well played for comedy. x)

  • chobitsza

I wonder when will they add EN subtitle in JP copies too.

    I’m just dreaming? okay….

  • Apparently according to scans, the actual romanization is Escha and Logy. (Escha being a pink-haired twintail girl and Logy being a white-haired guy)

Dunno where Silliconera got Eska and Rosy from. It’s a little confusing.

Also sounds like the Mana Khemia 2 thing is for first-run copies of the game. I guess that means Japan’s getting a PS2 Classics of it rather soon!

    • We got this up before scans were even available. We’re working on a larger report based off the scans now that they’re out.

  • Scan!

    • puchinri

      Yay, thankies~!

  • puchinri

Hmmm. I definitely like the idea of two protags, and the larger party is interesting. Annie’s battle system was nice, and having six party members is very nice~. I really liked the style of Ayesha’s combat though.

I am very curious about what they’ll do story-wise though. I’m at the end of Ayesha (though I think I have the bad ending), but the world is very intriguing and I want to see how they flesh it out. (I also wonder which protag we saw in the trailer.)

edit : Guhhh. Given Atelier is one of few series to (consistently) have/carry a female protag, it’s a shame that we can’t have two female protags. On the otherhand, I do find Rosy/Logy to be quite attractive, but still.
Also, interesting that his outfit fits more with their world than her’s (which kind of reminds me of Odelia), so maybe he’s the Dusk alchemist?

  • solbalmung

Now that took me by surprise, when this last Atelier game got first announced and the main character got presented I was like “yea I got used to GUST announcement about Atelier game, nothing new to except”
I fully retract what I said there and apologize for that statement. Gust really surprised me there with them announcing Dual protagonists a la Mana Khemia 2 (wich is my favorite to be honest).
Bravo Gust, I really can’t wait to get more info about the remaining cast of characters, the battle system mechanics and of course Tecmo/Nisa announcing plans for localization in the enar future 8)

  • pekikuubik

Looks like TK/NISA made a grave mistake in shortening the subtitle to just “The Alchemist of Dusk”. Turns out the ‘Land’ part was important, because apparently the meaning of ‘Sky’ in Escha & Logy’s subtitle is significant.

And Siliconera’s subtitle is just completely wrong.

I hope there’s a 3rd game with ‘sea’ in the subtitle and the main character is a female alchemist/pirate. :P

    • Steven Reece

Most likely the next place the keithgriff is visiting is referred to as sky.

  • PoweredByHentai

    Based on this image:

    The title reads as:
Atelier Escha & Logy ~Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi~

    Which translates to:
Atelier Escha & Logy ~The Alchemists of the Twilight Sky~

黄昏 = reads as “Tasogare” or “Koukon” = means Dusk/Twilight

    • Suriel Cruz

A MALE ALCHEMIST AS A PROTAGONIST???… SHUT-UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, ALREADY!!!! (Hopefully he will be as bad-ass as Sterk.)

      • NeoLight

        Take mine too!
been waiting for a male lead for a long time

        • MrTyrant

in my case I was wating for a male lead with THIS new artist direction from the latest installement since other male characters like i said were pretty cool.

    • MrTyrant

If the main male character is as good as other male characters (like Keithgrif/Juris or Sterk/Gio in arland trilogy) it could be very interesting for me.

Ayesha was pretty dull in her game, hoping that the new main girl will be better.

  • Learii

i like to see Atelier game go real action other then base turn

  • Suriel Cruz

Atelier Warriors?… No, please, NO!!! Keep focusing on refined the ‘Atelier’ graphics and to add more content and more years and more journeys and more places and more characters development, on the same game and stop doing trilogy that each game appears to be a DLC episode or expansion pack.

Guys its not really a warriors game, read the description.
It only uses the advanced lighting engine DW8 uses :P

and i am exite about the battle system 6 party members at once in battle? do want :P

    • MrTyrant

Yeah, I was getting tired of turn-based JRPG with just three party members :P good old Suikoden was great with six characters in battle and the formation system.

    • JustThisOne

Oh, so that’s what it is! Didn’t know what a LTGL engine does. :>

  • dammit…just started playing ayesha yesterday and now the second in this series is annouced for summer -_- lots to play in such a short time!

    • raymk

Well its not like this is coming out any time soon for the U.S. Unless your playing the japanese version of ayesha.

  • kaizin

wow this is new i been playing atelier a lot and the new one has dual scenarios well instant buy for me once it comes out and it might come with mana Khemia 2 that’s double the wootness.

  • Finally a swing to the series, been a while

  • Interesting change. I like the idea though it will be odd considering.
