This Vita JRPG Parody Solves Grinding Problem With "Boss Battle Only" Option

By Spencer . March 26, 2013 . 1:40pm

At GDC, I met with Breadbros Games at the Media Indie Exchange who has been working on a comical JRPG called Sully: A Very Serious RPG. The developer explained the map was inspired by Phantasy Star IV, but the game uses a Final Fantasy style battle system. What was interesting was when Ben talked about designing a role playing game for adults. Instead of talking about so-called "mature" content like violence, Ben mentioned how adults have less time to play games and he tackled this problem in an interesting way.

If you want to focus on exploring Sully: A Very Serious RPG lets players turn battles with small fry enemies off and go straight to boss battles. The game will automatically level players up too. Of course, if you have time to for a full RPG you can learn skills like opening the Gates of Heck.

Calling it a Vita RPG is a bit off. It was listed for PlayStation Mobile (which runs on Vita, and certain Android devices):

    The game looks really good.

    • Creator here: It’s technically coming out for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Playstation Mobile.

It’s presently available for pre-order over at breadbros, com for $5 off retail, but that pre-order is only for the Windows, Mac, and Linux versions.

(I can’t offer vita/psm pre-orders because, despite my best efforts, I do not own Sony.)

      • HassanJamal

Just to let you know, that was a very funny trailer and Ill be buying your game :D On the ps vita of course.

      • Sergio Briceño

Epic moment: When a creator advertises a game on Siliconera that doesn’t need advertising. Getting it for Vita, maybe PC too.

      • AJ

I read that site URL completely differently at first. Sometimes dyslexia can be hilarious.

      • Elvick

Wish it were native on Vita, but I’ll buy it anyway. Probably buy it on PC as well depending on how much I like the PSM version.

  • Interesting. A number of references to the demo game that came with an old (maybe still around?) RPG creation kit called VERGE. Heck, they had me at Sully the Clam.

    • wyrdwad

I think this… IS the demo RPG that came with VERGE way back when. Watching the trailer, this seems to be pretty much the same game, just… very much new and improved. Good on the VERGE crew for going pro! I’ll definitely be picking this up.

      • Good eye, both of you!

Actually, it’s a re-imagining (think: Battlestar Galactica) of the original Sully Chronicles pack-in game. The characters and locations are mostly similar, but the specifics have changed, and scenarios are different.

        • (also, hi Wyrdwad! It’s McGrue ;)

          • holy shit McGrue? I REMEMBER YOU (and wyrdwad for that matter)!

          • Want your brain to break? Zeboyd Games == Rainbow Despair. :D

          • wyrdwad

Hey man! Long time no talk! ;) Yeah, after seeing this trailer, I checked out your website, and saw many a familiar name there. Very cool to see you guys breaking into the big time — you totally deserve it!

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

This looks interesting. But even without much free time, I would play the full RPG experience, even if it takes months.

  • Exkaiser

The battle sprites and backdrops are really quite nice, but it seems like the overall game will have a tone similar to Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death, neither of which I was really a fan of.

  • Rudy Soto

    Oh God, that narrator…

  • A very serious RPG indeed, hahaha.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

    Lol, “Deep Sea Hot-air Balloons”.

Nothing more is needed. I’m sold.

  • Some of these characters remind me a bit of Abysswolf’s style

  • MrRobbyM

    I must own this..

  • Eric Harris

Really nice art and I usually don’t like indie RPGs but I will probably pick this up.

  • Richard N

    Sky trains!? GTFO Squeenix.

    • Zeik56

Dragon Quest IX had a sky train.

      • Richard N

Yet another reason why Dragon Quest is ridiculously awesome. And barely anybody still cares….

        • wyrdwad

Except, you know, ALL OF JAPAN. ;)

          • Richard N

Yeah… I need to hang out with more japanese people. They have great taste in video games, porn, music, and porn.

  • Göran Isacson

Oh man, I can’t wait to get my hands on all this hot, serious action. Finally, a game for REALLY grown up and mature and serious people about sticking it to jerk-ass clams.

  • Romangelo

    wow… it looks pretty good.

  • Ladius

Those battle sprites looks nice, I will probably give it a try once it’s out.

  • Andy
